Beyond The Certificate: Why Real Expertise In Investigative Interviewing Comes From Practice, Alan Saquella
Publications
In today’s professional environment, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, training and certifications are often treated as the gold standard of competence. Profiles are filled with credentials, badges and completed courses that signal expertise. But in fields like investigative interviewing, there is a critical distinction that too often gets overlooked: the difference between being trained, being certified, and being truly effective.
This is a message to colleagues across security, law enforcement, corporate investigations, and intelligence: training is only the beginning. Certificates validate exposure. Application, repeated, disciplined, and ethical application is what creates mastery.

Sports Equality In The Ring: All Genders Can Catch These Hands, Gordon Chan
International Law Journal
This Article examines the intersection of sports governance, gender identity, and international human rights law, using boxing as a central case study to explore the inclusion of transgender and nonbinary athletes. Tracing the historical and cultural evolution of gender participation in sports from ancient civilizations to contemporary institutions, the Article highlights how colonial, patriarchal, and pseudoscientific ideologies have long shaped the regulatory frameworks of modern sports. The doctrine of lex sportiva, which governs international sports through autonomous legal norms, is analyzed for its exclusionary gender practices and resistance to external legal oversight. Focusing on the World Boxing Council (WBC), the …
Fairness To Informants And Cooperators Vs. Public Interest Protection -- A Comparative Analysis Of Legal Frameworks In The United States And Brazil, Luis Henrique Machado
Fairness To Informants And Cooperators Vs. Public Interest Protection -- A Comparative Analysis Of Legal Frameworks In The United States And Brazil, Luis Henrique Machado
International Law Journal
This Article offers a comparative analysis of the legal frameworks governing cooperation agreements in the United States and Brazil, focusing on how each system balances the competing imperatives of public interest protection and fairness to informants and cooperators. While both jurisdictions rely on the use of cooperating defendants to prosecute unlawful activities such as cybercrime, political corruption, narcotics offenses, and transnational organized crime, their institutional approaches diverge sharply. The United States—operating within an adversarial, prosecutor-centered tradition—grants prosecutors broad discretion in negotiating and enforcing cooperation agreements, with minimal judicial oversight. This discretion reflects a utilitarian logic that prioritizes prosecutorial efficiency and …

Beyond Borders: Exploring The Role Of Arbitration In Enforcing Mandatory Human Rights Due Dilligence Across Global Supply Chains, Ying Chen, Winnie Jo-Mei Ma
International Law Journal
Despite the recent global shift towards hard law regulation of corporate social responsibility, human rights violations continue to persist across global supply chains; businesses are rarely held accountable for their harmful practices. This Article examines two key instruments that regulate corporate responsibility with respect to human rights, with a particular focus on their enforcement and liability mechanisms. The first is international soft law instruments, specifically the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, as well as the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development guidelines. The second is regional and domestic hard laws, including the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence …

Addressing Legal Uncertainties In Article Versions And Institutional Copyright Policies To Support Immediate Public Access To Federal Grant-Funded Publications, Yuanxiao Xu
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
New federal public access policies—mandated by the 2022 OSTP Memo and already adopted by several key federal grant-making agencies—require authors funded by federal grants to deposit peer-reviewed publications for immediate public access. This paper explains how grant- receiving institutions and their affiliated authors can dispel legal uncertainties and comply with the new public access policies. Section I delineates how valid prior licenses enable public deposit of manuscripts notwithstanding later publishing agreements transferring copyright to the journals. Section II discusses the different versions of a manuscript created during the publication process. Section III describes the different types of third-party contributions incorporated …

The Supreme Court’s turn to history as a method of constitutional decisionmaking has both intrigued and alarmed professional historians, for reasons now well-rehearsed in the literature. This Article takes as a given that history is now part of judges’ work. It then invites judges to think more expansively about the type of history they could—and perhaps should—be producing. This task, in turn, means engaging with some of the central questions about methodology and sources that preoccupy professional historians.
This Article focuses on a source base that historians routinely rely upon but that courts have shied away from: personal accounts of …
Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A. H. Miller
Falsifying Tradition, Darrell A. H. Miller
Duke Law Journal
From cases spanning gun rights, reproductive freedom, religious liberty, and personal jurisdiction; to separation of powers and other structural features of the Constitution, courts increasingly rely on tradition to guide their decisions. Often, judges appeal to tradition in a vaguely empirical way, as “facts to study, not convictions to demonstrate about,” in the words of Justice Antonin Scalia. Yet, for a claim that purports to be factual, there’s very little agreement, or even analysis, about what renders this factual assertion—tradition—true or false. This Article tackles that basic issue.
Part I surveys the ways in which courts use tradition in different …

Biostimulants offer a sustainable strategy to improve plant growth and stress resilience, particularly under limited water availability. We evaluated seven biostimulant treatments, including beneficial bacteria, mycorrhizal fungi, seaweed extract with humic acid, and their combinations, on early growth and physiological responses of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) under well–watered and drought-stressed conditions. Plants were assessed before and after a seven-day controlled drought period using a range of morphological and physiological traits, including height, effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII), stomatal conductance (gs), and leaf pigment profile. Results showed that microbial treatments that included Bacteria + …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Dysregulated cell–cell communication (CCC) is increasingly recognized as a driver of brain disease pathology, contributing to neuroinflammation, synaptic dysfunction, and neurodegeneration. Nevertheless, existing resources remain limited in brain specificity, regional coverage, and functional annotation. To address this gap, we develop the Brain Disease Cell-cell communication Database (BDCD), the first comprehensive resource focused on CCC networks across major brain diseases. BDCD integrates 38 manually curated datasets, comprising 8 519 425 single cells from single-cell RNA-seq studies and 140 744 spots from spatial transcriptomic maps, spanning 14 brain regions and 13 canonical cell types covering Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, …

Percy Green: A Legacy Of Tactical Innovation And Leadership In St. Louis' Black Freedom Movement, Christopher M. Fletcher
Dissertations
Abstract
This study explored Percy Green’s efforts against systemic racism, his innovative protest tactics, leadership qualities and principles, and his lasting impact within the Black Freedom Movement in St. Louis, Missouri, throughout the 1960s and 1970s. A qualitative single-case approach was utilized, analyzing archival records, interviews, a documentary about Green’s activism, newspaper articles, and Green’s own documentation of his work in the movement—all examined through thematic analysis. This process revealed key themes related to Green’s activism. The findings showed that Green employed non-violent, creative, and provocative protest tactics, including civil disobedience and direct action. These strategies revealed hidden racial inequalities, …

Currently more than 8 million people in the US work in the construction and skilled trades industries, which have historically been referred to as “blue-collar” jobs.1 The numbers will likely increase as there is a growing demand for skilled labor across the US because of the retirements of experienced tradespeople and the fact that fewer young people are pursuing these fields. Estimates show that by 2030, more than 40.0% of the current skilled trades and construction workforce will retire, leaving these industries with a critical worker shortage.2 Projections suggest that in the US by 2030, the skilled trades …

Eeg In Patients With Altered Mental Status In The Emergency Department, Mariama Runcie, Neal Nolan, Olivia Yoo, Robert Silbergleit, Fábio A Nascimento, Maura Kennedy, M Brandon Westover, Joshua N Goldstein
2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Altered mental status is a common chief complaint in the emergency setting, and the initial evaluation often fails to find an etiology. Subclinical (electrographic) seizures and nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE) are potential causes of delirium and altered mental status, but require electroencephalogram (EEG) for diagnosis. It is not clear how often subclinical seizure or NCSE is present in those with undifferentiated altered mental status, nor which patients are most likely to benefit from emergent EEG. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients presenting to a single academic medical center emergency department (ED) over a one-year period with the …
Empirical Benchmarks For Interpreting Effect Sizes In Violent Crime Interventions, Kohta James Matsukawa Hansen
Empirical Benchmarks For Interpreting Effect Sizes In Violent Crime Interventions, Kohta James Matsukawa Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Criminal justice researchers apply Cohen’s (1988) benchmarks to classify effect sizes as small, medium, or large, despite these standards never being meant for broad, decontextualized use (Cohen, 1988; Gies et al., 2024; Goulet-Pelletier & Cousineau, 2018; Lakens, 2013; Milner et al., 2023). Repeatedly doing so may weaken statistical validity, distort findings, and impede effective policymaking. This study introduces the first effect size benchmarks specifically designed for violent crime interventions.
Using a quasi-meta-analysis framework, 1,605 effect sizes from 104 violent crime intervention studies from the CrimeSolutions clearinghouse were converted to Cohen’s d. Three new discrete benchmarking methods were created using a …

Genetic Counselors With Doctorate Degrees: Career Profiles Based On Level Of Education, Alise Kathleen Blake
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Although genetic counseling is a health care profession requiring a terminal master’s degree, 4 to 6% of genetic counselors (GCs) hold a doctoral degree. The literature lacks information on how GCs who have doctorate degrees professionally differ from those who do not. Drawing from Cultural Historical Activity Theory, this quantitative study examines how post-secondary education, as a primary mediating tool, shapes career profiles within genetic counseling. Three research questions guided this study: (1) To what extent is the distribution of work environment, job title, and professional responsibilities different between GCs who have a doctorate degree and GCs who do not …
Positive Youth Development In Practice: National, Systematic, And Community-Level Insights Into Youth Empowerment And Behavioral Outcomes, Pamela Nicole Graham
Positive Youth Development In Practice: National, Systematic, And Community-Level Insights Into Youth Empowerment And Behavioral Outcomes, Pamela Nicole Graham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Behavioral outcomes in adolescents and youth reflect broader patterns of mental health and community support. Violent behaviors, substance misuse, and poor mental health disproportionately impact those living with unmet needs in settings concentrated with structural marginalization. These contexts often limit youths’ access to supportive systems that improve their alignment with prosocial outcomes. Local agencies and governments could encourage empowerment based programming to promote healthier developmental trajectories. This dissertation applies the Positive Youth Development (PYD) framework, integrated with Social Disorganization and Social Control theories, to examine how youth empowerment programs moderate the relationship between youths’ structural contexts and their subsequent developmental …
