Jumping Into The Deep End: Lessons Learned From Editing A Book About Open Movements, Abbey K. Elder, Bryan T. Ricupero, Shannon M. Smith

All Things Open

In 2023, we had a great idea: let’s make an open access book about open movements! Little did we know, this experience would change us all as we learned and grew alongside the authors who contributed to our volume, Open Movements: Recognizing Challenges and Building Connections.

Open Movements is about a lot of things: it’s about the institutional initiatives that support open scholarship, the vendors and programs that connect practitioners to the ideals of openness, and the barriers we run into when we try to communicate all that “Open” can be. Despite coming from separate institutions with backgrounds spanning …

Defining Competitive Intelligence For Research Development, Karen Walker, Alba Clivati Mcintyre Apr 2026

Defining Competitive Intelligence For Research Development, Karen Walker, Alba Clivati Mcintyre

Research Development Review: The NORDP Journal

This theoretical paper provides an in-depth examination of competitive intelligence (CI) in the context of university research development. CI is the process of ethically collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information to provide actionable insights that support strategic decision-making. Drawing from corporate, military, and academic contexts, we establish a comprehensive definition explicitly tailored to higher education research environments.

After establishing a clear definition of CI, we clarify how intelligence is produced within a knowledge continuum, demonstrating how raw data is transformed through critical analysis and contextual interpretation into valuable intelligence. Most importantly, we describe the three core domains of CI practice in …

Exploring Public Elementary School Educator Perceptions Of Student Goal Setting In The Classroom, Kelly A. Trottier Apr 2026

Exploring Public Elementary School Educator Perceptions Of Student Goal Setting In The Classroom, Kelly A. Trottier

Doctor of Education Program Dissertations

The academic success of elementary (Kindergarten–Grade 8) students is closely correlated to their persistence, perseverance through challenges, and meaningful engagement in learning. The motivation crisis in today's elementary classrooms is evident through rising absenteeism, increased disengagement, and declining academic performance, exacerbated by disruptions caused by COVID-19. Goal-setting strategies have been widely recognized in fields such as business and sports for improving motivation and performance, however, how educators implement these strategies remains underexplored. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of elementary educators who implemented goal-setting strategies in their classrooms. This research was guided by …

Correcting Confusion Over Commandeering, Supremacy, And Preemption: A User’S Guide To Modern Federalism, Vikram David Amar Apr 2026

Correcting Confusion Over Commandeering, Supremacy, And Preemption: A User’S Guide To Modern Federalism, Vikram David Amar

Pepperdine Law Review

Current disputes between state/local entities and the Trump administration, some of which build on flare-ups over the past few decades, place in sharp relief the key doctrinal features of modern federalism, many of which seem to confound the Supreme and lower courts, to say nothing of political actors and legal analysts. The mistakes being made run in both directions; sometimes states are wrongly confined, and in other episodes states are given (or are seeking) more than they are constitutionally due. In this Essay, I use several case studies—some from recent weeks or months and others from recent years or decades—to …

The Executive’S Takeover Of Independent Agencies: How Institutional Design Gave Way To Political Will, Neal Devins Apr 2026

The Executive’S Takeover Of Independent Agencies: How Institutional Design Gave Way To Political Will, Neal Devins

Pepperdine Law Review

The anticipated demise of the independent agency is a saga that implicates Congress as much as it does the President or the Supreme Court. By capitulating to presidential initiatives and failing to defend their institutional prerogatives, Congress has facilitated presidential control of the administrative state. Indeed, irrespective of whether the Court formally repudiates Humphrey’s Executor, Congress has largely acquiesced to a regime whereby presidents essentially control independent agencies. By highlighting the competing incentives of Congress and the White House, this Essay explains the rise of presidential unilateralism vis-à-vis independent agencies. This Essay also casts light on a critically important but …

The Imperious Presidency: Brazen Power Plays And Executive Overreach, Daniel Farber Apr 2026

The Imperious Presidency: Brazen Power Plays And Executive Overreach, Daniel Farber

Pepperdine Law Review

The Trump Administration has been prone to brazen power plays. These actions have three basic characteristics: they are dramatic deviations from conventional governance, generating headlines and online clicks; their legal (and sometimes factual) foundations are tenuous; and they are potentially effective even if they are ultimately held lawful. This Essay analyzes this phenomenon. It argues that such power plays can be a rational strategy for a president under certain circumstances. Power plays can help dominate the news flow and energize the political base. They can also cause behavior shifts in their targets, even when litigation would be likely to overturn …

“The Future Of Executive Power”: An Overview, Robert J. Pushaw Jr. Apr 2026

“The Future Of Executive Power”: An Overview, Robert J. Pushaw Jr.

Pepperdine Law Review

This symposium overview examines the rapid expansion of presidential power in the modern era, culminating in what the author and contributors describe as an unprecedented assertion of Article II authority during President Trump’s second term. It argues that the Constitution’s original separation-of-powers framework—designed to prioritize legislative authority and constrain the executive—has been inverted due to the growth of presidential control over foreign affairs, the administrative state, and policymaking. The article traces this shift through historical developments such as the New Deal, the rise of independent agencies, and the emergence of the “unitary executive” theory, while also analyzing recent Supreme Court …

When How We Teach Is What We Teach: Teacher Educators As Instructional Models For Novice Teachers, William Waychunas Apr 2026

When How We Teach Is What We Teach: Teacher Educators As Instructional Models For Novice Teachers, William Waychunas

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Teacher education programs have struggled to overcome the apprenticeship of observation, or the tendency for preservice teachers (PSTs) to replicate the traditional or problematic forms of teaching from their K–12 experience. However, the field tends to assume that PSTs draw only on instructional models from K–12, overlooking higher-education instructors such as professors, other faculty, and teacher educators as sources of pedagogical inspiration and guidance. This study uses data from a longitudinal investigation tracing the development of nine secondary social studies teachers to focus on how the modeling and demonstration of practice within coursework by teacher educators shaped PSTs’ understanding, impressions, …

Complex Systems Mapping Of Fiscal Growth Dynamics At Strategic Maritime Chokepoints Using Time-Series Slopes, Rahul Balamurugan, Preethi Nanjundan, Avichal Sharma Apr 2026

Complex Systems Mapping Of Fiscal Growth Dynamics At Strategic Maritime Chokepoints Using Time-Series Slopes, Rahul Balamurugan, Preethi Nanjundan, Avichal Sharma

Northeast Journal of Complex Systems (NEJCS)

This study examines how maritime and trading states allocate public resources between defence, health, and economic growth around three strategic chokepoints the Strait of Malacca, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Suez Canal. The analysis extends the classic “guns versus butter” framing by treating defence and health spending as co-evolving components of an interconnected fiscal-growth system. Using World Development Indicators data (1999-2024), trend slopes are estimated for military spending (% of GDP), healthcare spending (% of GDP), and GDP growth (annual %). Two derived indicators are computed, a defence-to-health slope ratio (military slope/health slope) and a fiscal-balance proxy (health slope …
