Selecting Dwarf Tomato Cultivars For Space-Limited Systems: Tradeoffs In Size, Yield, And Fruit Quality, Abigail Lazier, Bruce Bugbee, Noah Langenfeld
Plants, Soils and Climate Student Research
Global food systems face increasing pressure to produce more food with fewer resources, while urbanization limits access to traditional growing spaces. Urban agriculture offers a strategy to improve local food production, but space constraints remain a major challenge. Dwarf crops, bred to be compact and high yielding, can improve production efficiency in these systems. This study evaluated the growth habit, yield, and fruit quality of 18 dwarf tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) cultivars grown in controlled environment rooms under LED lights. Cultivars differed substantially in growth habit, size, yield and fruit quality. Generally, larger cultivars produced higher per-plant yields but …

Hollywood Has Learned Nothing From #Metoo, Clara Sarfati
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
Following the surge of the #MeToo movement in 2017, which exposed widespread unsafe and discriminatory conditions for women in Hollywood, the industry underwent a fundamental shift in how its institutions addressed sexual misconduct and equal opportunity. Now, with the rattles of the movement stabilizing, Hollywood is reemerging as an unsafe environment for women in entertainment. One of the most high-profile cases of the 2020s, Lively v. Wayfarer Studios LLC, illustrates how legal frameworks and Hollywood culture continue to fall short on protecting female victims of sexual assault. Moreover, it underscores how survivors are often still forced to navigate complex legal …

Breaking The Stigma: The Law And Supreme Court Cases Behind Gender Discrimination Legislation, Camille M. Ogden
Breaking The Stigma: The Law And Supreme Court Cases Behind Gender Discrimination Legislation, Camille M. Ogden
Undergraduate Theses
Pauli Murray and Ruth Bader Ginsburg were extremely influential attorneys due to their groundbreaking legal work on sexual discrimination. Murray’s legal work heavily influenced and inspired Ginsburg and this work explored that connection between them. This research asked the question, ““How did case law evolve from 1964-1982 in the United States of America and how did Pauli Murray influence and inspire Ruth Bader Ginsburg?” This thesis examined how Murray influenced Ginsburg and her legal work in the United States from 1966 until 1979. It looked at how case law and precedent changed and evolved mainly focusing on the influence these …
The Sensationalizing Of Presidential Assassinations In Mass Media Throughout American History, Lindsay E. Smith
The Sensationalizing Of Presidential Assassinations In Mass Media Throughout American History, Lindsay E. Smith
Undergraduate Theses
This project explores how mass media has shaped the public response to presidential assassinations across American history. By examining the deaths of Abraham Lincoln (1865), James A. Garfield (1881), William McKinley (1901), and John F. Kennedy (1963), we can trace how evolving media technologies – such as newspapers, yellow journalism, radio broadcasts, and live television coverage – have sensationalized violence, politicized tragedy, and transformed periods of national mourning into mass spectacles. The thesis analyzes reporting methods, narrative framing, and the news industry to show how each has influenced emotional response, political landscapes, and eventual presidential legacy. Ultimately, we find that …

Respiratory tract infections remain a major cause of global morbidity, highlighting the need for rapid and accurate diagnostic testing. This multicenter study evaluated the clinical and analytical performance of the updated NxTAG Respiratory Pathogen Panel v2 (RPPv2), a high-throughput multiplex molecular assay designed to detect 21 viral and bacterial respiratory pathogens. A total of 2,145 nasopharyngeal swab specimens, including both prospectively enrolled and archived specimens, were analyzed across five U.S. clinical sites. The NxTAG RPPv2 was assessed against FDA-cleared molecular assays and bi-directional sequencing, with contrived specimens used to supplement low-prevalence targets. Valid results were obtained for 99.7% of specimens …

We developed a benchmark set of subclonal variants in the Genome in a Bottle (GIAB) Consortium HG002 reference material (RM) DNA for evaluating lower-frequency variant callsets. We used a somatic variant caller with high-coverage (300×) whole-genome sequencing data from the GIAB Ashkenazi Jewish trio to identify potential subclonal variants in the HG002 RM DNA. Using orthogonal sequencing data and manual curation, we defined a benchmark set with 85 high-confidence subclonal single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) (allele frequency [AF] > 5%) and a benchmark region covering 2.45 Gbp of the autosomes. External validation supported that it can be used to reliably identify both false …

Nursing Migration And The Global Workforce: How The U.S. Nurse Shortage Impacts Developing Countries, Mololuwa Faithful Lasekan
Nursing Migration And The Global Workforce: How The U.S. Nurse Shortage Impacts Developing Countries, Mololuwa Faithful Lasekan
Honors Thesis
As United States (U.S.) healthcare organizations face persistent staffing gaps driven by an aging population, burnout, and limited educational capacity, many institutions increasingly rely on internationally educated nurses (IENs) to stabilize their workforce. This reliance intersects with longstanding structural challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where inadequate compensation and limited professional opportunities contribute to high migration intentions among nurses. Using a systematic literature review guided by PRISMA principles, this study synthesized evidence and five major themes emerged: (1) push factors driving nurse emigration from LMICs, (2) pull factors attracting nurses to the U.S., (3) digital globalization and post-COVID recruitment …

Can Speech Policy Protect Public Health?, Irina D. Manta, Cassandra Burke Robertson, Zoë Robinson
Utah Law Review
Government speech shapes public health outcomes, yet political incentives often lead officials to either remain silent about emerging threats or subordinate scientific evidence to partisan goals. This Article examines how three factors interact to influence public health: the constitutional status of health-related speech, the political economy of public health policymaking, and the modern information environment. Drawing on insights from public choice theory, we demonstrate how misaligned incentives lead political actors to avoid communicating about health risks or spread misinformation that serves their short-term interests at the expense of population health. The conventional tools of public health policy were developed when …

Strength In Numbers: Group Copyright Registration Of Online News Articles As A Weapon In The Battle Against Ai Infringement, Renee Farmer
Utah Law Review
Generative artificial intelligence companies and authors of the works used to create generative artificial intelligence systems are at war in the courts over whether and to what extent using copyrighted content to train generative AI models is fair use. In this fight, copyright protection remains an essential weapon for publishers to safeguard their content. However, U.S. copyright law has lagged behind the news industry’s integration of new technologies and mediums, with current procedures for staying abreast of copyright registration burdensome or infeasible. A new regulation from the U.S. Copyright Office, “Group Registrations of Updates to a News Website,” or 89 …
The Plain Solution To Federal Habeas, Charles Eric Hintz
The Plain Solution To Federal Habeas, Charles Eric Hintz
Utah Law Review
Federal habeas is a mess. The reason is the current doctrine’s myopic proceduralism: its obsession with limiting relief through stringent and Byzantine procedural rules. This has transformed our system of federal postconviction review into an impassible thicket of procedure that forecloses merits review in even strong cases; ensnares everyone in difficult threshold questions; and delays dispositions. Habeas today is thus unfair, opaque, and inefficient, and it fails to promote its own values: fairness, judicial economy, federalism, finality, anti-gamesmanship, and non-technicality. How should we fix this problem? This Article advances a solution based on “plain error” review. Under this approach, habeas’ …

Introduction: – Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets must balance collegiate demands with military preparation, leaving them vulnerable to psychological stressors. While structured strength and conditioning (S&C) programs enhance physical readiness, their impact on psychological health in cadet populations remains unclear. This study evaluated changes in depression, eating behaviors, sleep quality, and emotion regulation during a 12-wk S&C program. Methods: – Forty-nine U.S. Air Force ROTC cadets (21 female, 28 male; age: 20 ± 2 yr; body mass index: 24.2 ± 4.4 kg·m−2; body fat %: 27.1 ± 9.0%) completed the Supporting Tactical Athlete Readiness (STAR) program, a …
The Shadow Of The Rules Of Evidence On Adr, Henry Zhuhao Wang
The Shadow Of The Rules Of Evidence On Adr, Henry Zhuhao Wang
Utah Law Review
Every day, millions of disputes arise globally, yet only a small fraction escalate into legal disputes, with an even smaller proportion reaching the courtroom, where substantive law, procedural rules, and rules of evidence are applied. For the vast majority of disputes, resolved through various alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”) mechanisms, formal rules of evidence such as the Federal Rules of Evidence (“FRE”) generally do not apply. Despite this, a widely held belief persists that “rules of evidence cast a shadow on ADR,” implying that while these rules may not govern ADR processes directly, they continue to shape settlement dynamics. Legal scholars …

Advancing The Study Of Politics And The Brain: Targets For Research On Neurology And Political Behavior, Glenn W. Rainey Jr.
Commonwealth Review of Political Science
In this paper I argue that advancing research on neurology is creating important opportunities for political scientists to integrate its findings into their research, particularly with regard to the effects of emotional processes on political behavior. I provide a general background on neural anatomy, genetics, and neurobiological chemicals, and I briefly review techniques of neurological research, the findings that have been developing, and the limitations on the research. I provide an overview of selected key neural anatomy, and neurotransmitters and hormones, that play a role in neurological functions, and particularly in the development and expression of emotions. I then suggest …
Should Minimum Nurse Staffing Ratios Be Mandated?, Haley M. Gallup
Should Minimum Nurse Staffing Ratios Be Mandated?, Haley M. Gallup
DNP and Student Works
This paper argues that mandatory minimum nurse-to-patient staffing ratios are an ethical necessity within healthcare systems. Drawing on personal clinical experience, it is illustrated how inadequate staffing leads to rushed care, increased risk of errors, and diminished patient outcomes. The discussion is grounded in core healthcare ethics—beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice—emphasizing that nurses cannot consistently uphold these principles when overwhelmed by excessive workloads. Evidence from research is used to demonstrate that higher patient loads are associated with increased mortality rates, preventable complications, and decreased quality of care, while improved staffing enhances patient safety and nurse satisfaction. The paper also addresses the …

Constitutional Structure And Election Law, Manoj Mate
Constitutional Structure And Election Law, Manoj Mate
Journal Articles
Since Bush v. Gore, scholarship on election law has centered on a theoretical debate between rights-based and structural theory approaches, and the appropriate role and scope of judicial intervention in election law cases. However, these debates have not fully assessed the degree to which the Court’s approach to constitutional structure has fundamentally reshaped election law. Over the past two decades, the Court has increasingly emphasized the importance of constitutional structure-based approaches in election law cases.
This Article analyzes these dynamics and advances a typology of constitutional structure-based approaches in election law. Drawing on scholarship on modalities of interpretation and …
