The Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte Wrote A Letter To The Editor Of De Hollander, A. C. Van Raalte, Simone Kennedy

Van Raalte Papers: 1850-1859

The Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte wrote a letter to the editor of De Hollander in which he requested the editor to print a notice from the Boekzaal of July about the destruction brought by liquor. A testimony of a woman from Pennsylvania said that her husband and five sons all went to their graves as drunkards. As a result of her words, the town refused to have liquor imported any longer.

Minutes Of The Consistory Of The First Reformed Church, A. C. Van Raalte, William Buursma

Van Raalte Papers: 1850-1859

In the minutes of the Consistory of the First Reformed Church, it was reported that the costs of building the new church were more than expected. Cutbacks were designated and permission was granted to borrow $100 to purchase the wood to finish work on the church floor. Also, only $350 had been contributed to Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte's salary during the current year. At a congregational meeting on the same day, $7.50 was declared due from every member. "Payment in work or goods will no longer take place."

Meeting Notes Of The Consistory Of The First Reformed Church, A. C. Van Raalte, William Buursma

Van Raalte Papers: 1850-1859

Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte opened the Consistory meeting of the First Reformed Church with prayer. The majority of those present (Elders Labots, Jonker, Hekhuis, and Appeldoorn and Deacon Keppel) opposed changing the present system for terms of service of consistory men. However, upon retirement of consistory men, they would become part of the "greater" consistory and could be called upon when their advice would be needed. Evidently there has been pressure from the congregation against long terms of service of consistory men. Also discussed were the continuing arrears in the pastor's salary. He had been promised $600 per year …

Several Items Of Interest To The Citizens Of Holland Were Published In This Issue Of De Hollander, Simone Kennedy

Van Raalte Papers: 1850-1859

Several items of interest to the citizens of Holland were published in this issue of De Hollander. The new sanctuary of the First Reformed Church [Pillar Church] was progressing well. The roof was almost finished and the skeleton of the tower was in place. The opportunity to become a citizen is possible at the next session of the court in Grand Haven. A certificate of declaration and fifty cents were the only requirements. On Saturday, 7 October, the Democratic caucus would take place. On Friday, 6 October, General Lewis Cass would be giving a speech in Grand Haven.
