Milton Wright Diaries: 1859, Milton Wright

Milton Wright Diaries

Bishop Milton Wright, father of Wilbur and Orville Wright, regularly recorded entries in his diary from 1857 until his death in 1917. This diary’s entries begin on December 31, 1858 and continue until January 2, 1860. There is also an entry labeled January 25, 1911 as well. Wright records a variety of information regarding his travels, family history, and expenditures. Of particular note, this diary includes a record of Wright's marriage to Susan Koerner, the future mother of the Wright children, which the researcher might find of interest. Van Raalte Papers: 1850-1859

A letter of Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte to the Hon. Jacob Howard, Attorney General, protesting the decision of the court in Allegan that the majority who seceded from the Graafschap congregation in 1857 are allowed to put the building up for sale and pay the minority only a proportion of the proceeds. The minority in the Graafschap church were allowed to keep their property. The letter is signed by Albertus C. Van Raalte Papers: 1850-1859

At a meeting of the consistory of the First Reformed Church at which Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte presided and Gerrit Wakker served as clerk, it was reported that several boys exhibited offensive behavior during public worship. Consistory decided to ask their fathers to pay sufficient pew rent to include a seat for the sons of the family. Van Raalte and Wakker were appointed to handle this problem. Consistory members will be assigned their turns sitting in the back of the sanctuary where the youths often are seated. Two men were appointed to meet with a man who is charged …

Meeting Notes For The Board Of The Regents Of The Holland Academy Dec 1858

Meeting Notes For The Board Of The Regents Of The Holland Academy

Van Raalte Papers: 1850-1859

Rev. Albertus C. Van Raalte was among those who attended this meeting of the Board of Regents of the Holland Academy. Rev. Adrian Zwemer arrived tardily at the meeting due to a funeral he conducted but he was chided for his tardiness nevertheless. Rev. John Van Vleck requested a report of the treasurer, Rev. Van Raalte, about the building account. The board acknowledged the indebtedness it had to Van Vleck. Does this minutes denote some tension between Van Raalte and Van Vleck?
