Tracing The Impact Of Migration In Bangladesh: From Partition To The Pandemic, Sabrin Sarwar Jun 2023

Tracing The Impact Of Migration In Bangladesh: From Partition To The Pandemic, Sabrin Sarwar

International Journal on Responsibility

The challenge of migration has been multidimensional, with ramifications that range from economic, social, cultural, and even psychological. People have suffered deep trauma, which is reflected through their experiences of homelessness, the act of leaving their homeland or known habitat behind and being forced to travel due to societal pressure. This paper attempts to study migration-based literature and films with a special focus on two films from Bangladesh, Chitra Nodir Pare (Quite flows the River Chitra) and Maati (Back to its Roots). The first part of the paper examines how partition affected the subcontinent and caused trauma to multiple people …

Acculturation: Strategies To Overcome Stress By Migrant Families, Samhita Chaudhuri, Susmita Bhattacharyya

International Journal on Responsibility

Migration contributes to cultural change which involves acculturation, enculturation and resilience. Locational choice, cultural differences, coping mechanisms and learning specific skills help to sustain socio-economic life patterns. Seven domains are linked at the primary level (language, religion, cultural events, entertainment, food, and shopping habits); three at the secondary level (cognitive styles, behavioural patterns, and attitudes). On a temporal scale - acculturation reflects in cultural change of migrants’ psychological character and cultural-economic safety. Acculturation strategies involve processes like integration, separation, assimilation and marginalization based on individual and group identities. The paper will attempt to identify the underlying factors that shape the …

Journey, Movement, Affect And Rhythm: Migration Through North Indian Folk Songs, Sangeeta Gupta, Shambhavi Gupta Jun 2023

Journey, Movement, Affect And Rhythm: Migration Through North Indian Folk Songs, Sangeeta Gupta, Shambhavi Gupta

International Journal on Responsibility

This paper captures the lived experiences and affect associated with migration, through the folk songs of North India. While migration is usually studied as a larger demographic movement involving temporary or permanent displacement and departure, our project captures the pain and apprehension it entails. We have tried to retrieve the vital connection between gender and migration through an analysis of folk songs about the experiences of women. These songs passed down as a part of the oral tradition, articulate how a woman engages and interacts with migration – both due to her marriage and also when her husband leaves home …

Revisiting Development Discourse Amidst Informal Sector Crises Covid-19 Pandemic, Anjan Chakrabarti, Pooja Sharma Jun 2023

Revisiting Development Discourse Amidst Informal Sector Crises Covid-19 Pandemic, Anjan Chakrabarti, Pooja Sharma

International Journal on Responsibility

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, India has experienced a severe catastrophe of the informal sector, related to both health and livelihood. The informal sector and migrant workers are closely linked and they became easy prey during the nationwide lockdown at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The informal sector, primarily a fallout of the prevailing dual economy, makes it highly imperative to revisit not only India’s growth and development process but also the distribution. The paper attempts to evaluate the development process adopted by developing countries and their relevance in terms of growth and inequality. The study finds the missing link …

Analysing Pandemic Induced Economic Inequality In Developing Nations, Ravneet Kaur Bhogal Jun 2023

Analysing Pandemic Induced Economic Inequality In Developing Nations, Ravneet Kaur Bhogal

International Journal on Responsibility

The dawn of the new decade of the 21st century saw an unprecedented global crisis. This crisis led the world to halt economic and social progress. It led to a galloping increase in the economic inequality and migration of people in search of opportunities to save them from the current situation. The developing nations saw a sea of people migrating back to their roots in search of safe havens. This has led to the loss of jobs which has increased income inequality. Migrants face the risk of contagion and also the possible loss of employment, wages, and health insurance coverage. …

Some Thoughts On The 3 × 3 Magic Square Of Squares Problem, Desmond Weisenberg Jun 2023

Some Thoughts On The 3 × 3 Magic Square Of Squares Problem, Desmond Weisenberg

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

A magic square is a square grid of numbers where each row, column, and long diagonal has the same sum (called the magic sum). An open problem popularized by Martin Gardner asks whether there exists a 3×3 magic square of distinct positive square numbers. In this paper, we expand on existing results about the prime factors of elements of such a square, and then provide a full list of the ways a prime factor could appear in one. We also suggest a separate possible computational approach based on the prime signature of the center entry of the square.

Vertebrate Animal Behaviors And Abundances On Estuarine Shorelines Stabilized With Biodegradable Materials Utilizing Wildlife Cameras, Katherine Guise Jun 2023

Vertebrate Animal Behaviors And Abundances On Estuarine Shorelines Stabilized With Biodegradable Materials Utilizing Wildlife Cameras, Katherine Guise

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Living shoreline stabilization is a restoration technique that utilizes natural materials as breakwaters, plus vegetation landward of the breakwaters, to protect coastlines. This research does not provide information about how new, biodegradable restoration materials affect vertebrates that utilize these shorelines. For this project, I monitored 18 restoration sites along Canaveral National Seashore with wildlife trail cameras: 3 made with cement-infused jute breakwaters, 3 with metal gabion oyster shell breakwaters, and 4 with previously used breakwaters manufactured from plastic mesh oyster shell bags. This project used 4 sites as positive controls (intact vegetation) and 4 as negative controls (highly eroded, no …

Determinants Of Crime: A Macroanalysis Of The Southeastern United States, Joshua Byrd Jun 2023

Determinants Of Crime: A Macroanalysis Of The Southeastern United States, Joshua Byrd

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

In this paper, I examine potential determinants of crime by analyzing aggregate data from seven states in the southeast of America over time: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The aim of this research is twofold: (1) I analyze the compounding effects of multiple economic variables on the crime rate, and (2) I observe the variance in impact that economic variables have on property crime rates versus violent crime rates. Previous studies show that economic variables do in fact affect crime rates. Specifically, this paper examines the following: which type of crime rates are most strongly …

Elucidating The Effect Of The Antibiotic Tetracycline On The Regulatory Function Of The Guanidine-Sensing Ykkcd Riboswitch, Thomas Sullivan Jun 2023

Elucidating The Effect Of The Antibiotic Tetracycline On The Regulatory Function Of The Guanidine-Sensing Ykkcd Riboswitch, Thomas Sullivan

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

The primary objective for one of several project avenues spearheaded by the Fernandez lab is to develop an assay - ideally one more feasible for small-to-medium sized and/or undergraduate-only scientific research institutions - for evaluating the concomitant binding of tetracycline (tet antibiotic) and guanidine (guanidinium cation at physiologic pH) to the guanidine-sensing bacterial riboswitch ykkCD. Thus more generally a guanidine-I riboswitch, this noncoding regulatory RNA segment has been shown to also recognize the translation-inhibiting antibiotic via a high-affinity aptamer domain. Resultant conformational change in the regulator prompts translation-wise upregulation of genes downstream from it, among which - of those …

Discovery Research For New Optical Materials, Kameron Johnson Jun 2023

Discovery Research For New Optical Materials, Kameron Johnson

Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)

This project utilizes the material genome initiative (MGI) approach to aid in the discovery of new optical compounds to be used in scintillators at an accelerated rate. Novel materials for optical applications, such as luminescent scintillators, are desired for the improvement of properties. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, new single-crystal scintillating materials can be optimized leading to more efficient scintillation. Two existing compounds in the quaternary system Na-O-Si-Y were chosen and further modified using substitutions into proposed structures that can be investigated. The two original compounds, NaO4SiY, and NaO26Si6Y9, were chosen and modified because of their already high density. …

Session 3: Diversity Enhancing Intellectual Property, Jordi Goodman, Nina Srejovic Jun 2023

Session 3: Diversity Enhancing Intellectual Property, Jordi Goodman, Nina Srejovic

SITIE Symposiums

The field of intellectual property suffers from a lack of diversity. Women are underrepresented as credited inventors in the United States. Additionally, multi-gender inventor groups are underrepresented compared to all-male and, sometimes, even all-female groups. This representation has changed over time, with changes not always reflecting an increase in female representation. This is particularly true when studying gender-disparity as it exists in the field of computer programming and software patents. While women were well represented in computer programming at field’s inception, this changed after World War II because men lobbied to push women out of the field. Women have since …

Knowledge Sharing In Social Media: A Systematic Literature Review, Md. Armanul Haque, Xiaojuan Zhang, Zihadur Rahman, Amitav Saha

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Emerging new technologies, especially the way information technology is changing, have a big impact on many parts of people's lives. For example, modern social media platforms have changed how people interact, share information and talk to each other. Social media (SM) is becoming more and more useful as a way to improve communication and knowledge sharing (KS), not just between people but also between businesses. This trend has been closely watched by both professionals and academics. Even though research in this area is growing quickly and in a big way, there haven't been many attempts to look at the results …
