Red Breast Syndrome And Acellular Dermal Matrix, Allison Podsednik Gardner, Aidee Nunez, Mauricio De La Garza
Red Breast Syndrome And Acellular Dermal Matrix, Allison Podsednik Gardner, Aidee Nunez, Mauricio De La Garza
School of Medicine Publications
Increasingly popular for use in breast reconstruction, acellular dermal matrix (ADM) can provide support and protection to implants. However, use of ADM may be associated with infection and complications, including red breast syndrome (RBS). RBS is an inflammatory event that typically presents with cutaneous erythema over the domain where the ADM is surgically implanted. As ADM use increases, presumably, more cases of RBS will occur. Thus, techniques and tools to mitigate or manage RBS are needed to improve patient outcomes. Here, we describe a case where RBS was diagnosed and interestingly resolved after exchange for a different brand of dermal …

Multiple myeloma remains an incurable disease, and the cellular and molecular evolution from precursor conditions, including monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and smoldering multiple myeloma, is incompletely understood. Here, we combine single-cell RNA and B cell receptor sequencing from fifty-two patients with myeloma precursors in comparison with myeloma and normal donors. Our comprehensive analysis reveals early genomic drivers of malignant transformation, distinct transcriptional features, and divergent clonal expansion in hyperdiploid versus non-hyperdiploid samples. Additionally, we observe intra-patient heterogeneity with potential therapeutic implications and identify distinct patterns of evolution from myeloma precursor disease to myeloma. We also demonstrate distinctive characteristics of …
Strengthening The Choice For A Generic Qualitative Research Design, Jeri L. Ellis Edd, David L. Hart Phd
Strengthening The Choice For A Generic Qualitative Research Design, Jeri L. Ellis Edd, David L. Hart Phd
The Qualitative Report
Supporting the choice for research using a generic qualitative design is needed to assist the researchers with helpful guidance and descriptions about the approach in research. The name “generic” can be rather obtuse. Determining its appropriateness goes beyond discussions about combining elements of other traditional qualitative designs and considers the generic approach as a standalone methodology. Despite its inherent flexibility, the strength of the generic design offers a view of descriptive research data for interpretation that includes personal meaning making in research and is particularly well suited for counseling and other social sciences. The strengths, benefits, and limitations of the …

Circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis may improve early-stage breast cancer treatment via non-invasive tumor burden assessment. To investigate subtype-specific differences in the clinical significance and biology of ctDNA shedding, we perform serial personalized ctDNA analysis in hormone receptor (HR)-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) patients receiving neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in the I-SPY2 trial. ctDNA positivity rates before, during, and after NAC are higher in TNBC than in HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer patients. Early clearance of ctDNA 3 weeks after treatment initiation predicts a favorable response to NAC in TNBC only. Whereas ctDNA positivity associates with reduced distant recurrence-free survival …

Mid-infrared spectroscopic imaging (MIRSI) is an emerging class of label-free techniques being leveraged for digital histopathology. Modern histopathologic identification of ovarian cancer involves tissue staining followed by morphological pattern recognition. This process is time-consuming and subjective and requires extensive expertise. This paper presents the first label-free, quantitative, and automated histological recognition of ovarian tissue subtypes using a new MIRSI technique. This optical photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) imaging technique provides a 10× enhancement in spatial resolution relative to prior instruments. It enables sub-cellular spectroscopic investigation of tissue at biochemically important fingerprint wavelengths. We demonstrate that the enhanced resolution of sub-cellular features, combined …

Posttreatment Lyme Disease Syndrome And Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: A Systematic Review And Comparison Of Pathogenesis, Natalie Bai, Christie Richardson
Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research
Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in the United States and has been causing significant morbidity since its discovery in 1977. It is well-documented that about 10% of patients properly treated with antibiotics never fully recover, but instead go on to develop a chronic illness dubbed, posttreatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS) characterized by severe fatigue, cognitive slowing, chronic pain, and sleep difficulties. This review includes 18 studies that detail the symptoms of patients with PTLDS and uses qualitative analysis to compare them to myalgic encephalitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), a strikingly similar syndrome. In the majority of the PTLDS …

The Elements Of Access: Designing Equitable Public Transit To National Forests, Abigail L. Johnson
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
This paper asks what factors make a transportation system to a national forest appealing and accessible for people of color, Hispanic and Latino people, and people of a lower socioeconomic status. I use a conjoint analysis survey experiment to measure the favorability of transit-system attributes and compare favorability between local parks and Coconino National Forest as well as between racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. The findings of the study indicate no significant difference between preferences for traveling to a local park versus Coconino National Forest. This study does find that potential transit users favor a no-cost transit option over having …
Genetic Technologies: Patent Protections & The Case For Technology Transfer, Smitha Gundavajhala
Genetic Technologies: Patent Protections & The Case For Technology Transfer, Smitha Gundavajhala
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Genetic technologies range in scope from agricultural to medical applications. Most recently, during the COVID-19 pandemic, companies like Moderna developed and patented genetic technologies for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, like the mRNA vaccine. However, patent protection provides these companies with a monopoly that ultimately limits domestic production of generic versions, thus limiting access to life-saving diagnostics and therapeutics. When a company located in one country files a patent for recognition in another country, it effectively places a hold on production of any technologies covered by that patent’s reach, whether that patent is enforced or not. However, the TRIPS Agreement, the …

Toward A Canadian Right To Repair: Opportunities And Challenges, Anthony D. Rosborough
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
This Article draws a picture of the past, present, and future of the right to repair in Canada. It looks to early successes toward automotive right to repair, challenges faced in proposing consumer protection reforms in Ontario and Quebec, and the utility of a proposed copyright “Technological Protection Measure (TPM) exception” allowing circumvention for repair purposes. In light of right to repair priorities identified by Canada’s current federal government, the Article identifies a selection of reforms that could achieve these goals. Such reforms include creating regulations under the Copyright Act governing the use and implementation of TPMs, passing an exception …

Undoing Of The Carceral School System In The South Bay, California, Lizet Garcia
Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses
The school-to-prison pipeline disproportionately impacts Black and Brown low-income students. The pipeline, a well-researched phenomenon, explores the criminalization of non-white students from low-income backgrounds through surveillance and outsized disciplinary actions at their schools. Current research reveals that this disciplinary system has: not improved campus safety, cost taxpayers $35 billion annually, disrupted students' academic performance, and increased students’ lifelong experience with violence (Selvaggi, 2016). However, existing research fails to consider alternative and new systems prioritizing students' well-being and future success. My research bridges this gap by focusing on South Bay schools and communities in Los Angeles –a site currently lacking scholarship. …

Mental health is a serious issue that affects people of all ages, but is especially prevalent amongst college age youth. In the 2020-2021 school year, researchers found that around 60% of college students met the criteria for at least one mental health condition, such as major depression or generalized anxiety disorder. Many digital interventions have been innovated in order to help address this issue. These range in type and functionality from teletherapy to medication tracking applications. Some of these digital interventions include social features that allow users to interact with other users, friends, family, or doctors; however, having social features …
What You Don’T Know Will Hurt You: Fighting The Privacy Paradox By Designing For Privacy And Enforcing Protective Technology, Perla Khattar
What You Don’T Know Will Hurt You: Fighting The Privacy Paradox By Designing For Privacy And Enforcing Protective Technology, Perla Khattar
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
The persistence of the privacy paradox is proof that current industry regulation is insufficient to protect consumer’s privacy. Although consumer choice is essential, we argue that it should not be the main pillar of modern data privacy legislation. This article argues that legislation should aim to protect consumer’s personal data in the first place, while also giving internet users the choice to opt-in to the processing of their information. Ideally, privacy by design principles would be mandated by law, making privacy an essential component of the architecture of every tech-product and service.

“Tiktok Told Me I Have Adhd”: Regulatory Outlook For The Telehealth Revolution, Kaitlin Campanini
Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts
Telehealth’s expansion during the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed the approach to healthcare in the United States. This is particularly true in the behavioral health sector where several behavioral telehealth companies have emerged to treat Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (“ADHD”). These companies utilize a direct-to-consumer (“DTC”) model with a virtual platform that connects subscribing patients to medical providers who can treat them for ADHD. Although this telemedicine model emphasizes convenience and efficiency, the reality is that those benefits come at the cost of patient care. The federal regulations promulgated in the Ryan Haight Online Pharmacy Consumer Protection Act of 2008 to curtail …

Examining How Unauthorized Asylum Seekers And Legal Immigrants Shape Canadian Welfare And Immigration Attitudes, Henry S. Jin
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
How will Canadian attitudes on welfare and immigration shift in response to the recent surge in irregular border crossings? Do unauthorized asylum seekers pose a greater threat to public support for immigration and welfare policies compared to legal immigrants? At a time when irregular border crossings make national headlines, the Canadian government has simultaneously announced plans to welcome record numbers of legal immigrants. This study builds upon the existing body of literature on "Canadian exceptionalism" in public support for immigration and welfare. It investigates the extent to which these positive attitudes can be maintained in the context of increasing numbers …
