Mental Illness And Ethnic Identity And Their Relationship With Internalized Stigma Among Individuals Identifying As Latinx And Diagnosed With A Mental Illness, Melissa V. Martinez
Mental Illness And Ethnic Identity And Their Relationship With Internalized Stigma Among Individuals Identifying As Latinx And Diagnosed With A Mental Illness, Melissa V. Martinez
Student Theses
Identity plays a key role in all matters regarding mental health, especially in experiences of stigma. Stigma, a term used to describe the processes of labeling and stereotyping of particular groups, has been shown to be a major contributor to mental health outcomes. Internalization of stigma, is an emotional and behavioral response that further affects an individual’s functioning beyond the effects of a mental disorder. The relationship between stigma and certain identities, such as gender, have been clearly demonstrated in prior research. However, identity is a complex concept that varies in meaning between individuals. The significance of a particular identity …
Women Parliamentarians In India Since 1991: Challenges And Opportunities, Vatsala Bhusry
Women Parliamentarians In India Since 1991: Challenges And Opportunities, Vatsala Bhusry
Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs
India gained a new economic orientation in 1991 following the policy of economic liberalization. It offered the opportunities to close the gender gap in various fields including the political field as visualized in the original goal of the Indian constitution. However, there is an acute underrepresentation of women at the national political level and there is a lack of evidence-based research studies to analyze this gap. This study maps the political trajectories of 13 elected women leaders holding offices at the national level since 2019. To better understand the challenges and opportunities at both macro and micro levels they came …

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations And Oregon Federal Lands: A Prospective Policy Analysis, Cole P. Grisham
Electric Vehicle Charging Stations And Oregon Federal Lands: A Prospective Policy Analysis, Cole P. Grisham
Hatfield Graduate Journal of Public Affairs
In 2022, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) committed $100M towards expanding electric vehicle (EV) charging stations statewide. The policy goal is to provide EV fast-charging capacity[1] for four vehicles per station over the Interstate 5 and 84 corridors, along with the US 101, 97, 26, and 20 corridors. ODOT’s investment establishes clear statewide EV charging corridors for the traveling public, not only in the most populated corridors but also across the more rural parts of Oregon and connecting to neighboring states. In order for the travelling public to access public lands for recreation, economic, and other purposes by …
A Literature Review On Understanding, Solidifying, And Expanding The Role Of Art Therapy In Death And Dying, Deborah D. Clark
A Literature Review On Understanding, Solidifying, And Expanding The Role Of Art Therapy In Death And Dying, Deborah D. Clark
University Honors Theses
The purpose of this literature review is to weave together an understanding of what research exists around art therapy in death and dying, what the role of art therapy is in end-of-life care and education, and determine what gaps exist for further study. When it comes to the topic of death and dying, most of us would agree that end-of-life care is extremely important, though this agreement often falls apart regarding what that care looks like, and how we do (or don't) talk and learn about death and dying. This review argues for an integrated holistic model of care concerning …

Academic Nursing Administrators' Experiences With Social Distancing During Covid-19: A Qualitative Study, Vineta Mitchell
Academic Nursing Administrators' Experiences With Social Distancing During Covid-19: A Qualitative Study, Vineta Mitchell
Dissertations
The COVID-19 pandemic brought about many unpredictable challenges requiring flexible and adaptable solutions for higher education, especially in nursing academia. The COVID-19 pandemic challenged nursing academia, including academic nursing administrators (ANAs), to keep staff and students safe while mitigating the spread of the disease. The ongoing outbreak of COVID-19 and the global healthcare crisis of this generation led to the need for social distancing. As the number of deaths increased from the coronavirus, radical changes were adopted in the United States, including social distancing. The COVID-19 pandemic complicated the practical aspects of the practicum in nursing education as they questioned …
A Strategic Model For Sustainability Based On The Dcf Model, Luis RaúL RodríGuez Reyes
A Strategic Model For Sustainability Based On The Dcf Model, Luis RaúL RodríGuez Reyes
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
This conceptual paper contributes to the sustainability discussion by studying the relationship between sustainability and companies’ financial performance, looking for how companies’ sustainability adoption, reflected in CSR/ESG performance, can add financial value to shareholders. Results from the theoretical and literature analysis, using discounted cash flow techniques, indicate that sustainability adoption can be value-additive for shareholders, requiring fine-tuning to find financial equilibrium in three distinctive value channels: sustainability investment, financial, and revenue channels. However, managerial skills and resources may not be enough to ensure a positive result. As necessary conditions, this strategy requires achieving high performance in CSR/ESG indicators and the …
Migratory Material: Epigenetics & Weaving At The Us-Mexico Border, Valerie Navarrete
Migratory Material: Epigenetics & Weaving At The Us-Mexico Border, Valerie Navarrete
Masters Theses
Discourse often sutures the body shut, disallowing representations of identity to outgrow sociopolitical interests. This issue may originate from borders, but also from the unnamable pathology that generational colonial trauma transmits to the mind, body, and environment. Without a direct form of translatability, this thesis proposes a new materialism that deviates from any object-oriented ontology. Untethered and intra-active, epigenetics and weaving represent objects that transform typical ways of knowing and seeing. Their sensitivity to the environment, in addition to their mobility across generations of time, broaden the spatiotemporal loci of the body and its embodiment. Proposing new materials that expand …
Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Problem Of Long-Term Harms From Environmental Pollution, Rachel Rothschild
Cost-Benefit Analysis And The Problem Of Long-Term Harms From Environmental Pollution, Rachel Rothschild
Other Publications
One of the most contentious aspects of using cost-benefit analysis in the regulatory processinvolves discounting the value of future harms . Based on updated data from U.S. Treasurynotes and Inflation-Protected Securities, the Biden Administration’s new Circular A-4guidance will replace the unreasonably high discount rates of 3% and 7% from the prior 2003guidance with a single lower rate of 1.7% when assessing a regulation’s effects from thepresent through 30 years into the future. This post will review why discounting is done incost-benefit analyses and explain how the new guidance will allow the government to betterevaluate the benefits of reducing pollution exposures.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is still one of the deadliest cancers in oncology because of its increasing incidence and poor survival rate. More than 90% of PDAC patients are KRAS mutated (KRASmu), with KRASG12D and KRASG12V being the most common mutations. Despite this critical role, its characteristics have made direct targeting of the RAS protein extremely difficult. KRAS regulates development, cell growth, epigenetically dysregulated differentiation, and survival in PDAC through activation of key downstream pathways, such as MAPK-ERK and PI3K-AKT-mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling, in a KRAS-dependent manner. KRASmu induces the occurrence of acinar-to-ductal metaplasia (ADM) and pancreatic intraepithelial …

Severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an ongoing pandemic that continues to evolve and reinfect individuals. To understand the convergent antibody responses that evolved over the course of the pandemic, we evaluated the immunoglobulin repertoire of individuals infected by different SARS-CoV-2 variants for similarity between patients. We utilized four public RNA-seq data sets collected between March 2020 and March 2022 from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) in our longitudinal analysis. This covered individuals infected with Alpha and Omicron variants. In total, from 269 SARS-CoV-2-positive patients and 26 negative patients, 629,133 immunoglobulin heavy-chain variable region V(D)J sequences were reconstructed from …

Algorithmic Auditing: Chasing Ai Accountability, Goodman, Ellen P., Trehu, Julia
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
Calls for audits to expose and mitigate harms related to algorithmic decision systems are proliferating,3 and audit provisions are coming into force—notably in the E.U. Digital Services Act.4 In response to these growing concerns, research organizations working on technology accountability have called for ethics and/or human rights auditing of algorithms and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) audit industry is rapidly developing, signified by the consulting giants KPMG and Deloitte marketing their services.5 Algorithmic audits are a way to increase accountability for social media companies and to improve the governance of AI systems more generally. They can be elements of industry codes, …

The Nhk-Fintiv Rule: Patent Law’S Whack-A-Mole, Barbier, Janelle
Santa Clara High Technology Law Journal
Since their inception in 2013, inter partes review proceedings have steadily gained in popularity, killing patents at an astounding rate. It is no wonder that defendants flee to the PTAB when staring down costly patent infringement suits in federal court. But an IPR institution is not a right––it is at the sole discretion of the USPTO Director. And despite increased petitions for IPR over the past few years, institution rates have declined. The reason for fewer institutions seemingly lies with the PTAB’s decision to employ certain factors in determining whether public policy weighs against IPR institution. This precedential doctrine—known as …

An Unknown Essential Function Of Trna Splicing Endonuclease Is Linked To The Integrated Stress Response And Intron Debranching, Jennifer E Hurtig, Ambro Van Hoof
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
tRNA splicing endonuclease (TSEN) has a well-characterized role in transfer RNA (tRNA) splicing but also other functions. For yeast TSEN, these other functions include degradation of a subset of mRNAs that encode mitochondrial proteins and an unknown essential function. In this study, we use yeast genetics to characterize the unknown tRNA-independent function(s) of TSEN. Using a high-copy suppressor screen, we found that sen2 mutants can be suppressed by overexpression of SEN54. This effect was seen both for tRNA-dependent and tRNA-independent functions indicating that SEN54 is a general suppressor of sen2, likely through structural stabilization. A spontaneous suppressor screen identified mutations …

Estimating the imminent risk of adverse health behaviors provides opportunities for developing effective behavioral intervention mechanisms to prevent the occurrence of the target behavior. One of the key goals is to find opportune moments for intervention by passively detecting the rising risk of an imminent adverse behavior. Significant progress in mobile health research and the ability to continuously sense internal and external states of individual health and behavior has paved the way for detecting diverse risk factors from mobile sensor data. The next frontier in this research is to account for the combined effects of these risk factors to produce …

Do Firms Overreact To The Enactment Of Corporate Laws: Evidence From Anti-Price Gouging Laws, Mario Marshall
Do Firms Overreact To The Enactment Of Corporate Laws: Evidence From Anti-Price Gouging Laws, Mario Marshall
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The enactment of state corporate laws increases attention to issues related to price fairness.I present evidence that firms become less efficient in generating margins but not revenue upon enacting anti-price gouging laws. This finding is consistent with a prediction of salience theory that increased attention to unfair pricing induces firms to adopt more conservative pricing strategies. I provide evidence that companies that are more sensitive to unfair pricing risks have larger changes in efficiency. The results are consistent with the salience theory of choice and imply that attention that corporate laws generate may substantially impact firms.
Globalizing Investments: Enhancing Retail Investor Portfolios Through Cross-Asset International Diversification, Charlotte T. Kline
Globalizing Investments: Enhancing Retail Investor Portfolios Through Cross-Asset International Diversification, Charlotte T. Kline
University Honors Theses
Diversification is frequently reiterated, but for the standard retail investor, the what, how, and why often slide between the cracks. Diversifying internationally appears even more seldom discussed. A wealth of research has been integrated throughout this paper to focus on the what, how, and why of foreign diversification, all from a retail investor's perspective. This synthesis provides a comprehensive background followed by a discussion of a variety of asset classes available for diversification and biases and factors that lead to these gaps in diversification. Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer. Known risk variants explain only a small fraction of lung adenocarcinoma heritability. Here, we conducted a two-stage genome-wide association study of lung adenocarcinoma of East Asian ancestry (21,658 cases and 150,676 controls; 54.5% never-smokers) and identified 12 novel susceptibility variants, bringing the total number to 28 at 25 independent loci. Transcriptome-wide association analyses together with colocalization studies using a Taiwanese lung expression quantitative trait loci dataset (n = 115) identified novel candidate genes, including FADS1 at 11q12 and ELF5 at 11p13. In a multi-ancestry meta-analysis of East Asian and European …

When people make plausibility judgments about an assertion, an event, or a piece of evidence, they are gauging whether it makes sense that the event could transpire as it did. Therefore, we can treat plausibility judgments as a part of sensemaking. In this paper, we review the research literature, presenting the different ways that plausibility has been defined and measured. Then we describe the naturalistic research that allowed us to model how plausibility judgments are engaged during the sensemaking process. The model is based on an analysis of 23 cases in which people tried to make sense of complex situations. …

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) are an environmentally persistent group of chemicals that can pose an imminent threat to human health through groundwater and surface water contamination. In this review, we evaluate the subsurface behavior of a variety of PFAS chemicals with a focus on aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) discharge sites. AFFF is the primary PFAS contamination risk at sites such as airports and military bases due to use as a fire extinguisher. Understanding the fate and transport of PFAS in the subsurface environment is a multifaceted issue. This review focuses on the role of adsorbent, adsorbate, and …
