Translanguaging In World Language Higher Education, Alessia Barbici Wagner May 2023

Translanguaging In World Language Higher Education, Alessia Barbici Wagner

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Increased global migration and a myriad of other social and political factors has made today’s universities more diverse than ever. As a result, teachers in higher education regularly find multilingual learners from a variety of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds in their classrooms and must consider this diversity in their teaching. One of the ways that teaching can better serve today’s multilingual and multicultural student population is through translanguaging. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the intentional and unintentional use of translanguaging by multilingual language learners and world language instructors in higher education. Additionally, this qualitative case study …

Immunometabolic Reprogramming, Another Cancer Hallmark, Vijay Kumar, John H. Stewart May 2023

Immunometabolic Reprogramming, Another Cancer Hallmark, Vijay Kumar, John H. Stewart

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Molecular carcinogenesis is a multistep process that involves acquired abnormalities in key biological processes. The complexity of cancer pathogenesis is best illustrated in the six hallmarks of the cancer: (1) the development of self-sufficient growth signals, (2) the emergence of clones that are resistant to apoptosis, (3) resistance to the antigrowth signals, (4) neo-angiogenesis, (5) the invasion of normal tissue or spread to the distant organs, and (6) limitless replicative potential. It also appears that non-resolving inflammation leads to the dysregulation of immune cell metabolism and subsequent cancer progression. The present article delineates immunometabolic reprogramming as a critical hallmark of …

Plato's Republics: A Dramatic Interpretation Of The Early Cities In Plato's "Republic", Simeon Burns May 2023

Plato's Republics: A Dramatic Interpretation Of The Early Cities In Plato's "Republic", Simeon Burns

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation will demonstrate a new methodological approach to reading Plato’s Republic. I develop and apply a dramatic, dynamic hermeneutic to Book II and part of Book III in the text. This method holds that each speech is the product of a preceding agreement or disagreement between two speakers. Agreements lead to the argument’s advancement and disagreements result in a regression to a previous agreement from which to restart the exchange. The focus section is largely on the early exchange Socrates has with Adeimantus. I argue that Socrates is an unwilling participant in the famous discussion on the meaning …

Responding To The Nih Data Management And Sharing Policy, David Arredondo, Lisa Chinn

Posters, Proceedings, and Presentations: CTR Library

The University of Nebraska Consortium of Libraries (UNCL) Research Data Services (RDS) group was formed in the fall of 2021 to coordinate, support, and promote research data services throughout the NU system. On January 25, 2023, the NIH’s Data Management and Sharing (DMS) policy went into effect, requiring researchers to create and follow a DMS plan for all NIH grants. Many researchers were confused by the policy and unsure of how to create a DMS plan or identify and evaluate data repositories for depositing their data.

This talk will share the experience of RDS member’s responses to the policy and …

Faculty Publications

In 2019, the BYU Library began working with the Graduate Studies Department to develop a new workflow for processing incoming theses and dissertations. This presentation will examine our course of action for creating a more efficient process from student submission to institutional repository upload to cataloging. This was accomplished through open discourse in collaborative meetings and flexibility from IT teams. A comparison of the old and new workflows will be examined, along with how decisions were made along the way.

A Case Study Of The Complicated History Of Rice University’S First Patents, Hannah G. Edlund May 2023

A Case Study Of The Complicated History Of Rice University’S First Patents, Hannah G. Edlund

Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association

Digitization and online public databases have made patent searches a much simpler pursuit in recent years. However, uncovering a pre-digital era patent’s history and context remains challenging. A search for the first patents assigned to Rice University highlighted associated issues. Older patent formats often do not clearly indicate inventor-assignee relationships, and applications and official communications are not available online. To determine how Rice came to own three 1948 patents, extensive archival research was required. Were these patents assigned to the University by inventors, independent of its support or funding, or was their work performed at and for Rice, thus obliging …

Gdpr, Privacy And Europe's Power Gambit, Daniel Maneloveg

Master's Theses

This paper examines the current state of data privacy laws, with a specific focus on the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation. It begins by defining privacy as a fundamental aspect of the liberal worldview and discussing the history of privacy legislation to show that protecting privacy has long been a commitment of liberal countries.

The paper then discusses how technology has progressed and exposed the inadequacy of previous privacy laws, citing scholarly literature to emphasize the urgent need for updated legislation. It provides an overview of updates made to privacy legislation before the GDPR was passed in 2018, followed …

Responding To Future Pandemics: Biosecurity Implications And Defense Considerations, Diane Dieuliis, James Giordano

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

In an evolving and expanding biothreat landscape caused by emerging biotechnologies, increases in global infectious disease outbreaks, and geopolitical instability, the Department of Defense now faces challenges that alter its traditional approach to biothreats and prompt the need for modernized, improved preparedness for—and response to—potential biothreat scenarios. These challenges further complicate specific weaknesses revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the Department’s inability to sustain the military mission while meeting intragovernmental expectations to assist with civilian public health resources and services.

Shared Decision Making In Acute Pain Management In Patients With Opioid Use Disorder: A Scoping Review, Peter D Vu, Aila Malik, A Sarah Cohen, Vishal Bansal, Morgan R Cowan, Gregory M Blazek, Tiffany Champagne-Langabeer

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The treatment of acute pain over the years has changed with increasing alternative therapies and increased scrutiny of opioid prescriptions. Shared Decision Making (SDM) has become a vital tool in increasing patient engagement and satisfaction in treatment decisions. SDM has been successfully implemented in the management of pain in a variety of settings; however, information regarding the use of SDM for treating acute pain in patients with a history of opioid use disorder (OUD) remains scarce. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR), we conducted a review to understand how SDM is …

Deepmicetl: A Deep Transfer Learning Based Prediction Of Mice Cardiac Conduction Diseases Using Early Electrocardiograms, Ying Liao, Yisha Xiang, Mingjie Zheng, Jun Wang May 2023

Deepmicetl: A Deep Transfer Learning Based Prediction Of Mice Cardiac Conduction Diseases Using Early Electrocardiograms, Ying Liao, Yisha Xiang, Mingjie Zheng, Jun Wang

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cardiac conduction disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. There is considerable clinical significance and an emerging need of early detection of these diseases for preventive treatment success before more severe arrhythmias occur. However, developing such early screening tools is challenging due to the lack of early electrocardiograms (ECGs) before symptoms occur in patients. Mouse models are widely used in cardiac arrhythmia research. The goal of this paper is to develop deep learning models to predict cardiac conduction diseases in mice using their early ECGs. We hypothesize that mutant mice present subtle abnormalities in their early ECGs …

Assessing The Biking Suitability In National Highways: The Case Of Palayan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, Danica Shine Q. Sagnip, Mark P. De Guzman May 2023

Assessing The Biking Suitability In National Highways: The Case Of Palayan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, Danica Shine Q. Sagnip, Mark P. De Guzman

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

The conundrum of the Philippines’ public transportation has been a long- standing issue. With this, the Philippine government has been moving toward more sustainable public transportation systems such as cycling. Culturally and traditionally, cycling has never been mainstreamed or fostered in the country’s public transportation system. However, bicycles were considered an alternate means of transportation in the new normal. Thus, this study assessed if biking would be suitable on national highways, particularly in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija. Several factors can influence the use of cycling, such as physical and environmental factors, level of service, and width of inner and outer …

Cinematic Camouflage, Jared Valdez

English Language and Literature ETDs

There is a war for recognition happening on the Hollywood battlefield. Traditionally, in every war there is an enemy and an alley; in this study, the enemy is systemic racism, and the alley is Black culture. That is, this dissertation seeks to detail the past, present, and future implications of this battle for truth, inclusion, and recognition in American pop culture. This discussion examines how various multi-media forms like literature, film, television, and comic books work as tools to combat racism in American society. More importantly, the theories presented in this text are all linked to actual tactics of military …

Behind The Numbers: A Traditional Church Faces A New America, Larry Vogel May 2023

Behind The Numbers: A Traditional Church Faces A New America, Larry Vogel

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

The dissertation examines membership data for The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) from the mid-1970s to the present. It considers the analysis of LCMS decline by two scholars, George Hawley and Ryan MacPherson, who independently proposed that LCMS membership decline was internal in causation due to diminished birthrates and fewer young families. While acknowledging the reality of such internal decline, this dissertation argues that the lack of external growth is a greater cause for LCMS decline. Its lack of external growth is due primarily to the racial and ethnic homogeneity of the LCMS and its failure effectively to evangelize the increasingly …

Einstein Health Papers

Introduction Approximately one million prostate biopsies are performed annually in the USA, and most are performed using a transrectal approach under local anaesthesia. The risk of postbiopsy infection is increasing due to increasing antibiotic resistance of rectal flora. Single-centre studies suggest that a clean, percutaneous transperineal approach to prostate biopsy may have a lower risk of infection. To date, there is no high-level evidence comparing transperineal versus transrectal prostate biopsy. We hypothesise that transperineal versus transrectal prostate biopsy under local anaesthesia has a significantly lower risk of infection, similar pain/discomfort levels and comparable detection of non-low-grade prostate cancer.

Taiwan’S Food Resiliency—Or Not—In A Conflict With China, Gustavo F. Ferreira, Jamie A. Critelli May 2023

Taiwan’S Food Resiliency—Or Not—In A Conflict With China, Gustavo F. Ferreira, Jamie A. Critelli

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

The US military, intelligence, and diplomatic communities have overlooked a key vulnerability in their assessment of a military conflict between China and Taiwan—Taiwan’s growing reliance on agricultural imports and its food stocks (except for rice) that could endure trade disruptions for only six months. This article assesses Taiwan’s agricultural sector and its ability to feed the country’s population if food imports and production are disrupted by a military conflict with China or a naval blockade imposed by the People’s Liberation Army Navy; identifies the food products that should be prioritized in resupply operations, based on Taiwan's nutritional needs and domestic …

Srad Director's Corner: Recognizing The Increasing Importance Of The Us-Rok Alliance, Eric Hartunian May 2023

Srad Director's Corner: Recognizing The Increasing Importance Of The Us-Rok Alliance, Eric Hartunian

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

My first essay as SRAD director sets the stage for the Strategic Studies Institute’s research on the growing importance of South Korea to the US alliance system and security objectives across the Indo-Pacific region, provides reasons why South Korea may become commensurate with Japan as the region’s primary US ally, and proposes ways the United States should leverage this reality to maximize this relationship and maintain a free and open Pacific. This important analysis challenges the orthodox view of South Korea as a self-contained problem set with little relevance to other regional security issues and explains its underappreciated connections to …

Geniuses Dare To Ride Their Luck: Clausewitz’S Card Game Analogies, Nicholas A. A. Murray

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Scholars have been using the wrong card games to analyze Carl von Clausewitz’s analogies in On War, which has led to errors in understanding his ideas. This article identifies the games Clausewitz discusses, allowing for a more accurate interpretation of his original meaning for the study of war. Since Clausewitz’s ideas underpin strategy development within service education systems, it is critical his ideas are fully understood in context.

Legislative Update From The 94th General Assembly: Arkansas Bills Affecting Pregnant And Postpartum Mothers, Garrett Bannister May 2023

Legislative Update From The 94th General Assembly: Arkansas Bills Affecting Pregnant And Postpartum Mothers, Garrett Bannister

Arkansas Law Notes

In the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Org., the State of Arkansas was swift in restricting almost all abortions in the Natural State. Arkansas’s decision was met with plaudits from its supporters and reproval by its dissenters. In this unchartered legal territory, Arkansas’s 94th General Assembly—the first legislative session in the wake of Dobbs—has passed and proposed several bills that would provide pregnant and postpartum mothers and their children with medical and financial assistance. Specifically, these bills would provide pregnant and new mothers with health screenings, help high school-aged parents …
