Development Of Non-Viral Nano-Carriers For Gene Delivery And Covid-19 Vaccines, Zhongyu Li May 2023

Development Of Non-Viral Nano-Carriers For Gene Delivery And Covid-19 Vaccines, Zhongyu Li

Dissertations

Gene therapy is one of the most promising medical fields with the potential to effectively advance the treatment of difficult diseases by producing therapeutic proteins or repairing defective gene sequences. However, gene therapy presents severe challenges in delivery including renal clearance, phagocytosis, enzymatic degradation, protein absorption, and cellular internalization barriers, which have been barriers for translation into the clinic. Naked nucleic acids, with their intrinsic negative charge, electrostatically repulse the anionic cell membrane, preventing cellular uptake. Also, they are considered foreign genetic material when introduced into the body and are rapidly cleared by the reticuloendothelial system or degraded by nucleases, …

Extracting Lessons Of Resilience Using Machine Mining Of The Asrs Database, Immanuel Barshi, Bryan Matthews, Jolene Feldman May 2023

Extracting Lessons Of Resilience Using Machine Mining Of The Asrs Database, Immanuel Barshi, Bryan Matthews, Jolene Feldman

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) database is the world's largest repository of voluntary, confidential safety information provided by aviation's frontline personnel. The database contains close to 2 million narratives, many of which describe everyday situations in which people saved the day. In these situations, people’s resilient behavior solved a problem, dealt with a malfunction, and maintained a safe operation despite a serious perturbation. To be able to extract lessons of such resilience from this large database, the use of machine learning algorithms is being explored. In this report, we describe a comparison between two such algorithms: BERT and Word2Vec. …

The Viability Of See-And-Avoid For Urban Air Mobility Operations, Richard Mogford, Walter Johnson May 2023

The Viability Of See-And-Avoid For Urban Air Mobility Operations, Richard Mogford, Walter Johnson

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is an emerging aviation concept that could supplement today’s ground and air transportation systems. For UAM, it is generally assumed that the private sector will manage separation and not rely on the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration air traffic control system. To date, discussions of initial operations focus on using the visual abilities of the pilot to see-and-avoid (SAA) other aircraft. Decades of research on SAA has demonstrated that it is inadequate for reliable detection of aircraft that might pose a collision risk. The literature on multi-object tracking is also reviewed for findings on how well humans …

Nasa Human Factors Red Light/Green Light Analysis: Overview And Spacshiptwo Rl/Gl Case Study, Tracy Dillinger, Isabel Hernandez

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

Historically, learning from accidents and incidents involves identifying errors of commission or omission and “things that go wrong” and how to reduce their recurrence. While well-intentioned, infrequent failures receive more attention than everyday successes. Human Factors analysis need not limit itself to learning from failures. Learning from “what goes right” involves identifying resilience factors associated with behaviors and processes that strengthen the system and reduce risk. This article provides an overview of how the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Human Factors Task Force (HFTF) constructed the NASAHFACS model and the Red Light/Green Light approach. Using SpaceShipTwo as a case …

Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of Us Air Force Aptitude Composites For Aircrew Training, Montana R. Woolley, Thomas R. Carretta

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test (AFOQT) is used to qualify applicants for officer commissioning and for aircrew training. Although the current aircrew aptitude composites have shown predictive validity against initial aircrew training outcomes for many years, they also have demonstrated moderate to large mean score subgroup differences (SGDs) for females and racial/ethnic minorities. Historically, AFOQT aptitude composites have been computed from a combination of the cognitive subtests. The current study examined the utility of Predictive Success Models (PSMs) which added personality facets from the Self-Description Inventory for Officers to the existing cognitive composites. Three statistical methods were utilized to …

Development Of A Concept For Analyzing Moral Decision-Making In High Presence Virtual Environments, Sissy Friedrich, Axel Schulte

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

In future military aviation, Artificial Intelligence will play a key role in combat battlefield tactics by reducing workload and taking over decisions exploiting advantages of speed and precision of computers. However, the question of the so-called trigger authority remains the core issue in this field as ethical tensions arise when a machine decides over the use of lethal force. To enable the operator to make the most morally justifiable decision, the most suitable human-automation workshare has to be determined so that he is supported in just the right way and not overloaded nor exposed to automation bias or loss of …

A Comparison Of Virtual Reality And High-Fidelity Flight Training Devices For Ab Initio Pilot Training, Naomi Paul, Brad Moncion, Shi Cao

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

High-fidelity flight training devices (FTDs) have value for ab initio pilot training, but their high cost is a major limitation. Researchers want to know if low-cost simulators, including virtual reality (VR), may be effective for some aspects of ab initio pilot training, supplementing FTDs. This work used a between-subjects experiment with 20 participants – all student pilots at the University of Waterloo with under 20 hours of flight experience – to analyze performance changes after training using either a FTD or VR simulator for procedural and aircraft handling tasks over three training sessions. Performance was assessed using instructor evaluations for …

Development Of Novel Nanocarbon Based Materials And Membranes With Enhanced Biocidal Capabilities For Clean Water Generation, Indrani Gupta

Dissertations

Water scarcity is one of the major challenges facing humanity today, driven by population growth, economic development, and dietary shifts towards more water-intensive animal products. To address this issue, efficient water resource management and recycling of wastewater are essential. However, around 80% of wastewater globally is discharged into water bodies without treatment, posing a risk to ecosystems and human health. Pathogens, or harmful microorganisms, are a primary cause of water impairment and the transmission of waterborne diseases, leading to increased mortality rates. Traditional methods of treating pathogens involve the use of radiation or chemical disinfectants. Nonetheless, these methods have drawbacks, …

Large-Scale And Meso-Scale Ion Dynamics Of The Near-Earth Space Environment, Matthew Cooper May 2023

Large-Scale And Meso-Scale Ion Dynamics Of The Near-Earth Space Environment, Matthew Cooper

Dissertations

The mechanisms whereby low energy (order of lOs to 100s of eV) solar wind and ionosphere sourced particles are accelerated to high energy (order of 10s to 100s keV) in the Earth's magnetosphere are a trending research topic due to impacts on radiation belt populations, coupling to the high-latitude ionosphere, and energy budgets for collision-less plasma in dipole fields. Ultra-low frequency (ULF, order of 1-100 mHz) Alfven waves observed in the nightside inner magnetosphere during geomagnetic activity are one such acceleration mechanism. Several source processes for these waves, including the micro-scale drift-mirror mode, have been previously suggested but observational evidence …

Design, Synthesis, Biological And Computational Studies Of Flavonoid Acetamide Derivatives, Daniel Kasungi Isika May 2023

Design, Synthesis, Biological And Computational Studies Of Flavonoid Acetamide Derivatives, Daniel Kasungi Isika

Dissertations

Flavonoid compounds (FC) have extensive biological applications through potent antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antidiabetic, and antioxidant properties. These applications are nevertheless limited by low bioavailability, poor aqueous solubility, enzymatic degradation, rapid metabolism, and fast body clearance. FC show unique structure-activity relationships (SARs) essential in assessing and mitigating the prevalent challenges impeding their applications. These challenges can be addressed by structural modification of the FC through functionalization of the phenolic rings, modification of the ketone group, and modification of the phenolic hydroxyl groups with bioisosteres.

The objectives of this work are to (i) design and synthesize novel flavonoid acetamide derivatives (FADs) and …

The Radioprotectant Nano-Genistein Enhances Radiotherapy Efficacy Of Lung Tumors In Mice, Michael D. Kaytor, Artur A. Serebrenik, Karen Lapanowski, Debra Mcfall, Matthew Jones, Benjamin Movsas, Charles B. Simone Ii, Stephen L. Brown

Radiation Oncology Articles

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can be dose-limiting due to treatment-related toxicities. Genistein has been shown to be a robust radioprotective agent in preclinical models. A novel genistein oral nanosuspension formulation (nano-genistein) has demonstrated efficacy in mitigating radiation-induced lung damage in preclinical animal models. However, while those studies have confirmed that nano-genistein can protect normal lung tissue from radiation-induced toxicities, no studies have assessed the effect of nano-genistein on lung tumors. Here, we evaluated the impact of nano-genistein on the efficacy of radiation treatment of lung tumors in a mouse xenograft model.

METHODS: Two separate studies were …

Concept Of A Goal And Plan Recognition System For Adaptive Pilot Assistance In Helicopter Operations, Dominik Künzel, Axel Schulte May 2023

Concept Of A Goal And Plan Recognition System For Adaptive Pilot Assistance In Helicopter Operations, Dominik Künzel, Axel Schulte

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

This article presents a first concept of a pilot assistant system that adapts its support to the current intent of the pilot during Manned-Unmanned-Teaming (MUM-T) helicopter missions. Assistant systems often depend on a pre-defined plan. Due to unpredicted situational changes, the plan can deteriorate, and the system is not able to assist anymore. We envisage a system design that will infer the pilot’s intent by using a domain theory approach (plan recognition as planning). To compose a possible plan, a sequence of decisions about the relevant actions is necessary. Thus, we formulate sequential planning problems using Partially Observable Markov Decision …

Usability Shortcomings In Department Of Defense Funded Systems, Jerry Burpee May 2023

Usability Shortcomings In Department Of Defense Funded Systems, Jerry Burpee

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2023

Government developed systems, in particular Department of Defense (DoD) systems experience usability shortcomings that are not seen as often with systems developed for public or commercial use. The factors discussed include different funding models, limited competition, usability requirements and specifications, usability metrics, utilization of specialized users, lack of usability specialists, and non-revenue generation. By understanding and addressing these shortcomings, the usability in DoD developed systems can be improved to save the tax-payer money, minimize project and system risks, and improve user acceptance and satisfaction.

Domain Decomposition Methods For Linear And Non-Linear Elliptic Problems, Tadanaga Takahashi May 2023

Domain Decomposition Methods For Linear And Non-Linear Elliptic Problems, Tadanaga Takahashi

Dissertations

The primary purpose of this dissertation is to expand upon the circle of domain decomposition methods (DDM) which are algorithms that reformulate a boundary value problem in terms of multiple localized problems on subdomains. The first project involves expanding upon DDMs in a relatively mature field: the Helmholtz equation for wave scattering applications. The proposed method is an adaptation of a continuous cross-point Finite Element Non-overlapping DDM algorithm. The usual unbounded computational domain is truncated and then the near-field wave pattern is solved with a parallelized finite element method. Several improvements over the standard transmission operator are discussed in this …

Mathematical And Machine Learning Approaches For Classification Of Protein Secondary Structure Elements From Cα Coordinates, Ali Sekmen, Kamal Al Nasr, Bahadir Bilgin, Ahmet Bugra Koku, Christopher Jones May 2023

Mathematical And Machine Learning Approaches For Classification Of Protein Secondary Structure Elements From Cα Coordinates, Ali Sekmen, Kamal Al Nasr, Bahadir Bilgin, Ahmet Bugra Koku, Christopher Jones

Computer Science Faculty Research

Determining Secondary Structure Elements (SSEs) for any protein is crucial as an intermediate step for experimental tertiary structure determination. SSEs are identified using popular tools such as DSSP and STRIDE. These tools use atomic information to locate hydrogen bonds to identify SSEs. When some spatial atomic details are missing, locating SSEs becomes a hinder. To address the problem, when some atomic information is missing, three approaches for classifying SSE types using Ca atoms in protein chains were developed: (1) a mathematical approach, (2) a deep learning approach, and (3) an ensemble of five machine learning models. The proposed methods were …

The Right Of Publicity: A New Framework For Regulating Facial Recognition, Jason M. Schultz May 2023

The Right Of Publicity: A New Framework For Regulating Facial Recognition, Jason M. Schultz

Brooklyn Law Review

For over a century, the right of publicity (ROP) has protected individuals from unwanted commercial exploitation of their identities. Originating around the turn of the twentieth century in response to the newest image-appropriation technologies of the time, including portrait photography, mass-production packaging, and a ubiquitous printing press, the ROP has continued to evolve along with each new wave of technologies that enable companies to exploit peoples’ images and identities for commercial gain. Over time, the ROP has protected identities from misappropriation in photographs, films, advertisements, action figures, baseball cards, animatronic robots, video game avatars, and even digital resurrection in film …

False Speech And The First Amendment: The Problem With Free Speech In A Fake News Crisis, Eliza J. Estrella May 2023

False Speech And The First Amendment: The Problem With Free Speech In A Fake News Crisis, Eliza J. Estrella

Brooklyn Law Review

Social media platforms are used daily by millions of Americans to connect with friends and family, shop from home, and stay attuned to current events. But the increasing ease and speed of accessing information on social media leaves its users exposed to misinformation, disinformation, and fake news that is designed to deceive. Because natural cognitive biases make individualized truth-filtering mechanisms unreliable, it is often difficult for the public to distinguish between fact and fiction. Widespread belief in viral fake news stories have caused serious and dangerous consequences to public health, safety, and democracy. However, because false speech remains categorically protected …

Clicking Away Consent: Establishing Accountability And Liability Apportionment In Direct-To-Consumer Healthcare Artificial Intelligence, Stephanie L. Lee May 2023

Clicking Away Consent: Establishing Accountability And Liability Apportionment In Direct-To-Consumer Healthcare Artificial Intelligence, Stephanie L. Lee

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are making sweeping changes across all industries, and health care is no exception. AI promises to revolutionize patient treatment with the development of algorithm-driven tools to improve efficiency in clinical care. As alluring as machine-driven learning may be given its potentialities, however, the incorporation of AI into the healthcare field has also been received with trepidation. This fear is understandable given the lack of transparency to the public surrounding the exact mechanisms for creating algorithms and the reasoning followed by the software. Indeed, AI in the healthcare system is aptly known as “black-box medicine.” …
