The discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method accelerated by local time-stepping (LTS) and parallel techniques is employed to analyze the time-domain shielding effectiveness (TDSE) of metallic enclosures. The detailed formulations and implementation procedures of the DGTD method and LTS and parallel techniques are introduced. Numerical results validate the correctness of the proposed method. Moreover, the influence of various design parameters of the metallic enclosure, including aperture dimensions, wall thickness, spacing of aperture arrays, etc., on the TDSE are analyzed by the proposed method. Some rules are given for the design of the enclosure with rectangular apertures from the perspective of TDSE. …

The contribution of mitochondria to the metabolic function of hypoxic NP cells has been overlooked. We have shown that NP cells contain networked mitochondria and that mitochondrial translocation of BNIP3 mediates hypoxia-induced mitophagy. However, whether BNIP3 also plays a role in governing mitochondrial function and metabolism in hypoxic NP cells is not known. BNIP3 knockdown altered mitochondrial morphology, and number, and increased mitophagy. Interestingly, BNIP3 deficiency in NP cells reduced glycolytic capacity reflected by lower production of lactate/H

The substitution of fossil fuel with clean hydrogen (H2) has been identified as a promising route to achieve net zero carbon emissions by this century. However, enough H2 must be stored underground at an industrial scale to achieve this objective due to the low volumetric energy density of H2. In underground H2 storage, cushion gases, such as methane (CH4), are required to maintain a safe operational formation pressure during the withdrawal or injection of H2. The wetting characteristics of geological formations in the presence of H2, cushion gas, …

Introduction: Older men with prostate cancer are commonly affected by reductions in lean mass and physical function following androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Resistance-based exercise programs are critical to counteract the musculoskeletal toxicities derived from prostate cancer treatment and aging. However, there is significant variability in the effects of exercise interventions. Examining demographic and clinical moderators of exercise effects in this patient group can assist in identifying which subgroups of patients benefit most. Therefore, we examined the effects and moderators of resistance-based exercise programs on sarcopenia-related outcomes that included lean mass, skeletal muscle index, physical function, and muscle strength in older …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
For decades, researchers have observed that eccentric (ECC) muscle strength is greater than concentric (CON) muscle strength. However, knowledge of the ECC:CON strength ratio is incomplete and might inform resistance exercise prescriptions. Our purposes were to determine the magnitude of the ECC:CON ratio of human skeletal muscle in vivo and explore if sex, age, joint actions/exercises, and movement velocity impact it. A total of 340 studies were identified through searches. It was possible to analyse 1516 ECC:CON ratios, aggregated from 12,546 individuals who made up 564 groups in 335 of the identified studies. Approximately 98% of measurements occurred on isokinetic …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis (RDEB) is a rare, inherited, and currently incurable skin blistering disorder characterized by cyclically recurring wounds coexisting with chronic non-healing wounds. In a recent clinical trial, three intravenous infusions of skin-derived ABCB5+ mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) to 14 patients with RDEB improved the healing of wounds that were present at baseline. Since in RDEB even minor mechanical forces perpetually provoke the development of new or recurrent wounds, a post-hoc analysis of patient photographs was performed to specifically assess the effects of ABCB5+ MSCs on new or recurrent wounds by evaluating 174 wounds that occurred after baseline. During …

Different from conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), simultaneous transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) can reflect and transmit signals to the receiver. In this paper, to serve more ground users and increase deployment flexibility, we investigate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with STAR-RIS (STAR-RIS-UAV)-aided wireless communications for multi-user networks. Energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) protocols are considered to control the reflection and transmission coefficients of STAR-RIS elements. To maximize the sum rate of the STAR-RIS-UAV-aided coordinated multipoint (CoMP) cellular system for multi-user networks, the corresponding beamforming vectors as well as transmitted and reflected coefficient matrices are optimized. Specifically, …

To provide rapid direction finding (DF) for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) emitters in future wireless networks, a low-complexity direction of arrival (DOA) estimation architecture for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receiver arrays is constructed. In this paper, we propose two strategies to address the extremely high complexity caused by eigenvalue decomposition of the received signal covariance matrix. Firstly, a rapid power iterative rotational invariance (RPI-RI) method is proposed, which adopts the signal subspace generated by power iteration to obtain the final direction estimation through rotational invariance between subarrays. RPI-RI causes a significant complexity reduction at the cost of a substantial performance …

The geological sequestration of carbon dioxide, including mineralization in basaltic formations, has been identified as a promising method of attaining a low-carbon economy. However, successful CO2 storage depends on both the CO2 wettability of the basaltic rocks and the basalt rock-fluid interfacial interactions. The contact angles of brine/CO2 systems for Western Australian (WA) and Iceland basalts have been recently reported in the literature. However, contact angle datasets for evaluating the CO2 wettability of Saudi Arabian (SA) basalt have not been previously reported. Moreover, there is limited information on the impact of organic acids on the wettability …

Newton, Dennis R. Taaffe, Kerri Winters-Stone, Laurien M. Buffart, Daniel A. Galvão
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: To examine the effects and moderators of exercise effects on cardiometabolic outcomes in men with prostate cancer previously or currently undergoing androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Results: Seven trials including 560 patients were examined. Exercise resulted in significant effects on whole-body and regional fat mass (P ≤ 0.001). For whole-body fat mass, significant exercise effects were observed in patients who were unmarried (−1.4 kg, P < 0.05) and who presented with higher fat mass levels (−1.0 kg, P < 0.05). For diastolic blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), younger (−4.7 mmHg, P < 0.05) and older patients (−0.2 mmol.l-1, P < 0.10) achieved greater effects, respectively. Regarding high-density lipoprotein (HDL), patients undertaking ADT + prostatectomy + radiotherapy derived significant exercise effects (0.3 mmol.l-1, P < 0.05). Conclusions: Exercise effectively reduces fat mass across subgroups of men undergoing or following ADT with different characteristics. For diastolic blood pressure, HDL and LDL, groups based on age and treatment history could be specifically targeted with exercise medicine.

Few would dispute the importance of equity, inclusion and belonging in early childhood education and care, yet translation into meaningful practice rarely centres the priorities of historically divested communities. The national learning framework for early childhood in Australia is the Early Years Learning Framework, positioning the child as a capable agent and describing inclusive, culturally competent practice. This article presents part of a larger study investigating educators’ beliefs and practices when using culturally diverse literature to address the Early Years Learning Framework’s diversity principles. A critical theoretical framework enables a robust examination of how the Early Years Learning Framework constructs, …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Larval mosquito development is directly impacted by environmental water temperature. Shallow water less than 1 m deep is a common larval mosquito habitat. Existing mathematical models estimate water temperature using meteorological variables, and they range in complexity. We developed a modification of an existing one-layer heat balance model for estimating hourly water temperature and compared its performance with that of a model that uses only air temperature and water volume as inputs and that uses air temperature itself as an indicator of water temperature. These models were assessed against field measurements from a shallow tidal wetland—a known larval habitat—in southwest …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Visuoperceptual evaluation of fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a commonly used assessment in dysphagia or swallowing disorders. Currently, no international consensus exists regarding which visuoperceptual measures to use for the analysis of FEES recordings. Moreover, existing visuoperceptual FEES measures are limited by poor and incomplete psychometric data, identifying an urgent need for developing a visuoperceptual measure to interpret FEES recordings. Following the COSMIN group’s (COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments) psychometric taxonomy and guidelines, this study aimed to establish the content validity of a new visuoperceptual FEES (V-FEES) measure in adults with oropharyngeal dysphagia. Using …

Creating xeric landscapes in lawns and prairies is a significant challenge and practical need in arid urban environments. This study examined the drought resistance of some C4 grass species for constructing urban lawns and prairies. A factorial experiment based on randomized complete block designs with four replications was conducted. Experimental treatments were two irrigation levels (100% and 50% Field Capacity (FC)) and five warm-season grass species (Andropogon gerardii Vitman, Sorghastrum nutans (L.) Nash, Panicum virgatum L., Schizachyrium scoparium (Michx.) Nash, and Bouteloua curtipendula (Michx.) Torr.). The effects of drought on physiological, morphological, and qualitative characteristics of the grass species were …

With the development of high-speed and heavy-haul railway transportation, the surface failure of rail turnouts has become increasingly severe due to insufficient high hardness-toughness combination. In this work, in situ bainite steel matrix composites with WC primary reinforcement were fabricated via direct laser deposition (DLD). With the increased primary reinforcement content, the adaptive adjustments of the matrix microstructure and in situ reinforcement were obtained at the same time. Furthermore, the dependence of the adaptive adjustment of the composite microstructure on the composites’ balance of hardness and impact toughness was evaluated. During DLD, the laser induces an interaction among the primary …

AIMS: To investigate the prevalence, molecular type, and antimicrobial susceptibility of Clostridioides difficile in the environment in Vietnam, where little is known about C. difficile. METHODS AND RESULTS: Samples of pig faeces, soils from pig farms, potatoes, and the hospital environment were cultured for C. difficile. Isolates were identified and typed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) ribotyping. The overall prevalence of C. difficile contamination was 24.5% (68/278). Clostridioides difficile was detected mainly in soils from pig farms and hospital soils, with 70%-100% prevalence. Clostridioides difficile was isolated from 3.4% of pig faecal samples and 5% of potato surfaces. The four …

We aimed to compare the dietary intakes of Australian patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to general Australian population intake data and determine whether the intake of any nutrient or food group was able to predict the degree of steatosis. Dietary data from fifty adult patients with NAFLD were compared to intake data from the Australian Health Survey for energy, macronutrients, fat sub-types, alcohol, iron, folate, sugar, fibre, sodium and caffeine. Linear regression models adjusting for potential confounders (age, sex, physical activity and body mass index) were used to examine predictive relationships between hepatic steatosis (quantified via magnetic resonance …

Recently, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been integrated into wireless communication systems to enhance the performance of air–ground transmission. To balance performance, cost, and power consumption well, a hybrid IRS and UAV-assisted directional modulation (DM) network is investigated in this paper in which the hybrid IRS consisted of passive and active reflecting elements. We aimed to maximize the achievable rate by jointly designing the beamforming and phase shift matrix (PSM) of the hybrid IRS subject to the power and unit-modulus constraints of passive IRS phase shifts. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, a high-performance scheme …

As wildfires are of increasing concern in a warming world, there is a need to understand how fire temperatures affect solute concentrations of forest litter and soils in drinking water catchments. In addition, the concentrations are expected to be affected by time since the previous fire. We sampled soil and litter from recently (2 months) and less recently (4.5 years) burnt sites from jarrah forest in SW Australia. The samples were heated at 250°C, 350°C, and 500°C for 30min followed by leaching to determine solute compositions at these temperatures and in unburnt samples. At 250°C–350°C, we found increased concentrations of …
