This study addressed the research gap of simulation in beginning nursing courses and the impact on student perceptions of self-efficacy in future clinical rotations and contributes to the larger body of simulation research by answering the following questions:

1. What are student perceptions regarding simulation and clinical readiness?

2. How does exposure to simulation impact student clinical performance outcomes?

3. To what degree does …

Gender, Race, And Job Satisfaction Of Law Graduates, Joni Hersch Jun 2023

Gender, Race, And Job Satisfaction Of Law Graduates, Joni Hersch

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Studies typically find that lawyers have high job satisfaction and that women are not less satisfied than are men. But racial differences as well as gender differences by race or ethnicity in satisfaction may be masked because most lawyers identify as racially White. To examine whether job satisfaction differs by race and whether gender and race/ethnicity have an intersectional relation to job satisfaction, I use data on nearly 13,000 law graduates drawn from six waves of the National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG) conducted between 2003 and 2019. The NSCG uniquely provides a large enough sample to examine intersectionality in …

When Patients Are Assailants: Valuing Occupational Risks, W. Kip Viscusi, Elissa P. Gentry Jun 2023

When Patients Are Assailants: Valuing Occupational Risks, W. Kip Viscusi, Elissa P. Gentry

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Intentional violence against healthcare workers inflicts a physical and mental toll, motivating legislative proposals to better regulate these occupational risks. This article uses this context to address two novel issues for benefit assessment raised by injuries from assailants: potential heterogeneity in valuation based on the context of the injury risk and possible reductions in self-reported valuations when the exposed population has been trained to feel responsible for the risk. This article presents experimental evidence on workers’ preferences over the form of intervention: protection (risk reduction) or insurance (cost-sharing). The experiment also elicits worker valuations of occupational health care risks, calculating …

Technology Leadership and Innovation Faculty Publications

There have been numerous demands for enhancements in the way undergraduate learning occurs today, especially at a time when the value of higher education continues to be called into question. One type of demand has been for the increased integration of subjects/disciplines around relevant issues/topics—with a more recent trend of seeking transdisciplinary learning experiences for students. Transdisciplinary learning can be viewed as the holistic way of working equally across disciplines to transcend their own disciplinary boundaries to form new conceptual understandings as well as develop new ways in which to address complex topics or challenges. This transdisciplinary approach can be …

Evaluating Assessment Score Validity And Characterizing Undergraduate Biology Exam Content, Crystal Uminski Jun 2023

Evaluating Assessment Score Validity And Characterizing Undergraduate Biology Exam Content, Crystal Uminski

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The landscape of undergraduate biology education has been shaped by decades of reform efforts calling for instruction to integrate core concepts and scientific skills as a means of helping students become proficient in the discipline. Assessments can be used to make inferences about how these reform efforts have translated into changes in department curriculum and course practices. Such changes can be measured using student scores on researcher-developed programmatic and concept assessments. Scores on these assessments are often assumed to be accurate representations of student biology content knowledge, but my work indicates that the validity of these interpretations may be threatened …

Book Review: Maurice-Ernest Gillioz (1877-1962): Great Builder In America, Yves Bordet

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Maurice-Ernest Gillioz is a good example of the American dream. The son of a Swiss emigrant from the Canton of Valais who arrived in New York in the middle of the American Civil War, Gillioz started from nothing and built one of the largest public works companies in the Midwest in the first half of the twentieth century. Philippe Pierroz’ book is 164 pages, written in French, of richly illustrated and strongly documented material. The numerous illustrations and appendices can be easily understood by English-speaking readers.

Digital Economy, Institutional Quality And Economic Growth In Selected Countries, Olabode P. Olofin Mr.

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study examines the role of digital economy and institutional quality on economic growth of Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria. The study adopts the feasible generalized least square method with annual panel data from 1985 to 2017. Results show that digital economy, human capital and knowledge worker, and democratic accountability promote economic growth, while corruption, socioeconomic conditions, and bureaucratic quality retard economic growth. Furthermore, interaction of digital economy with corruption promotes growth. However, the interaction of digital economy with institutional quality retards economic growth, which could be due to the deteriorating institutional quality and low level of economic digitalization in …

Food Price And Inflation Adjustments In Nigeria: Evidence From Threshold Cointegration, Usman A. Bello, Aliyu R. Sanusi Jun 2023

Food Price And Inflation Adjustments In Nigeria: Evidence From Threshold Cointegration, Usman A. Bello, Aliyu R. Sanusi

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This paper investigates two stages of transmission through which inflation stabilization policy affects headline inflation by estimating a threshold cointegration model. The paper finds that asymmetric monetary shocks passing-through food prices exerts inflationary pressure on consumer prices, and is characterized by deep asymmetric movement, large degree of stickiness in adjusting downward, while exhibiting upward momentum in correcting food price fall. In addition, asymmetries were found in consumer price adjustment as food price shock transmits substantial inflationary pressure to consumer prices, while disinflationary effect originating from a fall in food price is inconsequential. The coefficients of adjustment were found to be …

Dynamic Effect Of Exchange Rate Gap Shocks On Stock Market Deepening: Evidence From Nigeria, Kareem Abidemi Arikewuyo Jun 2023

Dynamic Effect Of Exchange Rate Gap Shocks On Stock Market Deepening: Evidence From Nigeria, Kareem Abidemi Arikewuyo

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The study examines the exchange rate gap shock–stock market deepening nexus in Nigeria using the structural VAR-X (SVAR-X) technique for the period 1986Q1 to 2018Q4. Findings reveal that exchange rate gap shock has a negative but statistically not significant effect on stock market deepening in Nigeria. It was also found that exchange rate passed–through interest rate from second to thirteen quarter, and further through financial openness whose effect, like exchange rate gap, was negative. This implies that exchange rate gap is significantly and negatively related to interest rate and financial openness in Nigeria. It is therefore recommended that the monetary …

Modelling The Impact Of Government Expenditure On Economic Growth In Nigeria: The Moderating Effects Of Oil And Non-Oil Revenue, Victor U. Ijirshar, Gaius M. Asombo, Florence D. Bundepuun, Ashifa Tersugh, Ayila Ngutsav Jun 2023

Modelling The Impact Of Government Expenditure On Economic Growth In Nigeria: The Moderating Effects Of Oil And Non-Oil Revenue, Victor U. Ijirshar, Gaius M. Asombo, Florence D. Bundepuun, Ashifa Tersugh, Ayila Ngutsav

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

This study examines the relationship between government expenditure and economic growth and assesses the moderating effects of oil revenue and non-oil revenue in Nigeria from 1981 to 2021. The study uncovered short-term asymmetry in the government expenditure-economic growth nexus while the long-term relationship was symmetric. The study found that government expenditure is a significant determinant of economic growth in Nigeria and that oil and non-oil revenue influences the nexus between government expenditure and economic growth in Nigeria positively. The study recommends efficient management of oil revenue, directing investments during high revenue periods and ensuring fiscal sustainability. Government should also establish …

A Review Of The Current State Of Global Surgical Oncology And The Role Of Surgeons Who Treat Cancer: Our Profession’S Imperative To Act Upon A Worldwide Crisis In Evolution, Aaron C. Saunders, Miriam Mutebi, T. Subramanyeshwar Rao

General Surgery, East Africa

Worldwide, the capacity of healthcare systems and physician workforce is woefully inadequate for the surgical treatment of cancer. With major projected increases in the global burden of neoplastic disease, this inadequacy is expected to worsen, and interventions to increase the workforce of surgeons who treat cancer and strengthen the necessary supporting infrastructure, equipment, staffing, financial and information systems are urgently called for to prevent this inadequacy from deepening. These efforts must also occur in the context of broader healthcare systems strengthening and cancer control plans, including prevention, screening, early detection, safe and effective treatment, surveillance, and palliation. The cost of …

Women, The Articling Term, And Sexual Harassment: A Critical Analysis Of Protective Legislation, Codes Of Conduct, And Regulatory Bodies, Courtney Chrusch Jun 2023

Women, The Articling Term, And Sexual Harassment: A Critical Analysis Of Protective Legislation, Codes Of Conduct, And Regulatory Bodies, Courtney Chrusch

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The following paper argues that legislation and law societies inadequately protect female articling students, and women in law more broadly, from sexual harassment. Previous research from students’ personal reports and survey responses outline the barriers, workplace bullying, and misconduct commonly experienced during the articling term. The paper begins with a review of the inadequacies in professional codes of conduct. The analysis considers the Butterfield (Re), 2017 LSBC 2 decision from British Columbia, which describes a female complainant sexually harassed by her principal during her articling term. Feminist Legal Theory, Marxism, and Cultural Law concepts emphasize sexual harassment as a …

Making Matters Worse: An Analysis Of Paragraph 22(2)(I) Of The Child And Family Services Act, Sophie Fiddes Jun 2023

Making Matters Worse: An Analysis Of Paragraph 22(2)(I) Of The Child And Family Services Act, Sophie Fiddes

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

The 2017 amendments to Nova Scotia’s Child and Family Services Act were made with the purported purpose of better protection of children. This paper assesses the amendments to paragraph 22(2)(i) and the addition of subsection 24(2) to the Act that changed the law in relation to children who are exposed to intimate partner violence. This paper argues that the amendments have had a negative effect on children and their families, resulting in an increase of children in temporary care since 2017. The paper concludes that intimate partner violence would be better addressed by placing domestic violence considerations in the best …

Ticketing Poverty: An Analysis Of The Discriminatory Impacts Of Public Intoxication By-Laws On People Experiencing Homelessness In Montreal, Emily Knox, Jeanne Mayrand-Thibert, Michelle Pucci Jun 2023

Ticketing Poverty: An Analysis Of The Discriminatory Impacts Of Public Intoxication By-Laws On People Experiencing Homelessness In Montreal, Emily Knox, Jeanne Mayrand-Thibert, Michelle Pucci

Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies

Municipalities like Montreal penalize what they consider public disturbances through by-law infraction citations, or “tickets,” that are issued to people experiencing visible homelessness at a disproportionate rate. This is a pattern we observed over the course of two years during our time at a legal clinic providing legal information to people in precarious housing situations. In this article, we propose that Montreal’s by-laws prohibiting public drinking and public intoxication adversely impact unhoused people and are discriminatory under the Quebec Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, a quasi-constitutional human rights instrument unique to Quebec. Drawing from research by criminologists and …

Refactoring Dependency Loading And Standardizing Factory Patterns In The Horizon Simulation Framework, Jack W. Kelly Jun 2023

Refactoring Dependency Loading And Standardizing Factory Patterns In The Horizon Simulation Framework, Jack W. Kelly

Master's Theses

The Horizon Simulation Framework (HSF) is an open-source community driven mod- eling and simulation tool developed over 15 years by a lineage of Cal Poly graduate students. The tool excels in its flexibility to model an assortment of complex systems, with prebuilt modeling elements available for the simulation of space missions. A high-level simulation tool like HSF lends itself to an agile development cycle as system constraints can be quickly identified through day in the life simulation of the modeled system. The objective of the work presented in this thesis is to refactor the way in which several modeling elements …
