Defamation With Bayesian Audiences, Yonathan Arbel, Murat C. Mungan Jun 2023

Defamation With Bayesian Audiences, Yonathan Arbel, Murat C. Mungan

Articles

How strictly should the law regulate false defamatory statements? We first show that the presence of judicial errors often puts defamation law on a Laffer curve: regulation that is too lax or too strict is inferior to moderate regulation. While moderate regulation is ideal, it is not always attainable because of practical and legal constraints. With these constraints, we consider a Bayesian audience that takes the strictness of defamation law into account when evaluating statements. The optimal standard is then taxer than is prescribed by standard models with naive audiences. These findings underscore the importance of accounting for audience effects …

Birth Weight Moderates The Association Between Obesity And Mortality Rate, Gregory Pavela, Nengjun Yi, Luis Mestre, Pengcheng Xun, David B Allison Jun 2023

Birth Weight Moderates The Association Between Obesity And Mortality Rate, Gregory Pavela, Nengjun Yi, Luis Mestre, Pengcheng Xun, David B Allison

Children’s Nutrition Research Center Staff Publications

Purpose: The strength of the association between obesity and mortality rate (MR) varies by body mass index (BMI) and sociodemographic groups. We test the hypothesis that the association between obesity and MR varies, in part, due to the moderating effect of parental BMI and birth weight.

Methods: Data come from the 1958 National Child Development Study, an ongoing longitudinal dataset initiated in 1958 with baseline measures of birth weight from 18,059 infants born in Great Britain over 1 week. We tested whether the association between BMI and MR was moderated by parental BMI and birth weight using generalized additive proportional …

Effect Of Collaborative Pre-Task Planning On The Writing Quality Of Intermediate Efl Learners Within The Task-Based Language Teaching Approach, Osama Naeem Alzoubi

Dissertations

This dissertation explores the collaborative pre-task planning taking place prior to writing within the Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) framework. The primary aim of this dissertation is to examine how providing time for PTP, considered as a problemsolving activity, has the potential to more positively enhance L2 writers’ performance and motivation to write than writing tasks performed with no planning time. Through a mixed methods experimental design, intermediate school students were distributed into a control and experimental group and conducted a pre-test and post-test to enable the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data over a ten-week period. The actual writing …

How To Resuscitate A Sick Vm In The Cloud, Xuhua Ding Jun 2023

How To Resuscitate A Sick Vm In The Cloud, Xuhua Ding

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A guest virtual machine in a cloud platform may fall “sick” when its kernel encounters a fatal low-level bug or is subverted by an adversary. The VM owner is hence likely to lose her control over it due to a kernel hang or being denied of remote accesses. While the VM can be rebooted with the assistance from the cloud server, the owner not only faces service disruption but also is left with no opportunity to make an in-depth diagnosis and forensics on the spot, not to mention a live rectification. Currently, the cloud service provider has neither incentive nor …

Timber design courses within the undergraduate program in the Architectural Engineering department at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), place an emphasis on seismic and wind design. Therefore, the proposed learning tools and activities are intended to pair with an introduction to concepts in the American Wood Council’s National Design Specifications (NDS) and Special Design Provisions for …

Multigenerational Coresidence And Parental Time In Developmental Childcare In China, Cheng Cheng, Menghan Zhao Jun 2023

Multigenerational Coresidence And Parental Time In Developmental Childcare In China, Cheng Cheng, Menghan Zhao

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Previous literature has examined how multigenerational coresidence changes parental time in primary childcare. However, much less is known about how coresidence may affect the amount of time parents invest in developmental childcare, which is crucial for children’s education and life chances. Using longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Studies 2010-2018, we examine how parental time investment in developmental childcare varies by household structure and parental and grandparental education. Results suggest that coresidence with maternal grandparents increases mothers’ time in developmental childcare among children with high-educated parents. Moreover, the positive effect of matrilocal residence on maternal time investment is greatest …

Avoiding Starvation Of Arms In Restless Multi-Armed Bandit, Dexun Li, Pradeep Varakantham Jun 2023

Avoiding Starvation Of Arms In Restless Multi-Armed Bandit, Dexun Li, Pradeep Varakantham

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Restless multi-armed bandits (RMAB) is a popular framework for optimizing performance with limited resources under uncertainty. It is an extremely useful model for monitoring beneficiaries (arms) and executing timely interventions using health workers (limited resources) to ensure optimal benefit in public health settings. For instance, RMAB has been used to track patients’ health and monitor their adherence in tuberculosis settings, ensure pregnant mothers listen to automated calls about good pregnancy practices, etc. Due to the limited resources, typically certain individuals, communities, or regions are starved of interventions, which can potentially have a significant negative impact on the individual/community in the …

Blockchain-Enabled Ehr Sharing In Healthcare Federation: Sharding And Interblockchain Communication, Faiza Hashim Jun 2023

Blockchain-Enabled Ehr Sharing In Healthcare Federation: Sharding And Interblockchain Communication, Faiza Hashim

Dissertations

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are crucial components of the healthcare system, facilitating accurate and efficient diagnosis. Blockchain technology has emerged as a promising solution to improve EHRs sharing among medical practitioners while ensuring privacy and security. By leveraging its decentralized, distributed, immutable, and secure architecture, blockchain has the potential to revolutionize the healthcare system. However, due to security concerns, blockchain networks in healthcare typically operate in private or consortium modes, resulting in isolated networks within a federation. Scalability remains a significant challenge for blockchain networks, as the number of participating nodes increases within each network of the federation. Consensus mechanisms …

Delineating The Cellular Mechanisms Of Endoplasmic Reticulum-Retained Endoglin Mutants Causing Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Type 1, Nesrin Mohammed Gariballa

Dissertations

Endoglin, also known as cluster of differentiation 105 (CD105), is an auxiliary receptor in the TGFβ signaling pathway. It is predominantly expressed in endothelial cells as a component of the heterotetrameric receptor dimers comprising type I, type II receptors and the binding ligands. Mutations in ENG, the gene encoding endoglin, have been associated with Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia type 1 (HHT1), a rare autosomal dominant inherited disorder affecting about 1 in 5000-8000 individuals, which is generally characterized by vascular malformations. Secretory and many endomembrane proteins synthesized in the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) are subjected to a highly stringent protein folding and assembly …
