The Brothers Grimm Fairytale Cookboook, Grace Therriault

Graphic Communication

Modern technology and the Internet have made cookbooks relatively obsolete. Nowadays you only see them as coffee table decoration, something to flip through but not actually use. Designing a creative and fun children’s’ cookbook based on some of the famous Brothers Grimm fairytales, will encourage kids, ages 5-12, to have some fun in the kitchen and use their imagination to whip up some incredible edibles. This opportunity creates a window for children to get excited about a book and translate what they read into the real world. Lastly, this project is important to me because it the impact experimenting in …

Internal Medicine, East Africa

Background: Baseline stroke severity is probably partly responsible for poor stroke outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is a paucity of information on determinants of stroke severity among indigenous Africans. We sought to identify the factors associated with stroke severity among West Africans in the SIREN (Stroke Investigative Research and Educational Networks) study.

Methods and Results: Stroke was diagnosed clinically and confirmed with brain neuroimaging. Severe stroke was defined as a Stroke Levity Scale score of ≤5. A multivariate logistic regression model was constructed to identify factors associated with stroke severity at 95% CI and a nominal cutoff of 5% …

China's Aggression In The 21st Century, Masaki J. Aerts Jun 2023

China's Aggression In The 21st Century, Masaki J. Aerts

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

ii ABSTRACT: The Thucydides Trap is a pattern for identifying rising powers preparing to disrupt the status quo by challenging an already established one. Assuming this pattern is correct, and if we fail to take actions to modify this path, then it is not at all unlikely that the long-elevating tensions between China and its adversaries (the US and its allies) will eventually reach a point of critical mass – and even result in direct military conflict. This paper will look to outline the tactics and actions taken by China. This will then be followed by my argument for proactive …

BACKGROUND: Exposures to environmental contaminants can be influenced by social determinants of health. As a result, persons living in socially disadvantaged communities may experience disproportionate health risks from environmental exposures. Mixed methods research can be used to understand community-level and individual-level exposures to chemical and nonchemical stressors contributing to environmental health disparities. Furthermore, community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches can lead to more effective interventions.

OBJECTIVES: We applied mixed methods to identify environmental health perceptions and needs among metal recyclers and residents living in disadvantaged neighborhoods near metal recycling facilities in Houston, Texas, in a CBPR study, Metal Air Pollution Partnership …

Post-Secondary Preparation: Strategic Transition Planning For Employment Outcomes In Vocational Education For Students On The Autism Spectrum, Robin Jones Jun 2023

Post-Secondary Preparation: Strategic Transition Planning For Employment Outcomes In Vocational Education For Students On The Autism Spectrum, Robin Jones

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Many transition programs and services fail students on the autism spectrum, causing them to have the worst post-secondary outcomes. Due to the importance of helping high school students with disabilities transition to adulthood and consider post-secondary education, employment, and independent living, secondary transition education, and services are receiving increased attention. Situated Learning Theory-based transition intervention programs that led to post-secondary employment were tested. To demonstrate the need for effective transition intervention programs that lead to post-secondary employment, Florida professionals who worked with vocational education students with ASD in secondary schools completed a 38-question electronic survey. A thematic analysis addressed the …

Minority Language Education In Russia: An Example Of Social And Cultural Reproduction And Correspondence Theories, Nadezhda Braun Jun 2023

Minority Language Education In Russia: An Example Of Social And Cultural Reproduction And Correspondence Theories, Nadezhda Braun

Russian Language Journal

Russia is an incredibly diverse country, both linguistically and ethnically. However, Russia is often presented, and presents itself, as a monolith. Russia’s approach to minority language teaching further perpetuates this monolithic view by creating a hierarchical language structure with Russian at the top. This hierarchy is created through societal pressure, language requirements in the Russian education system, and the minimization of minority language instruction, in direct contrast to best practices for language instruction. Chuvash in Chuvashia and Nenets, Khanty, and Selkup in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug serve as examples of this linguistic hierarchy. This paper uses social and cultural reproduction …

Literature As An "Affective Magnet": Defining, Engaging And Investigating Emotions In A (Russian) Language-Literature Classroom, Sofya Yunusova Jun 2023

Literature As An "Affective Magnet": Defining, Engaging And Investigating Emotions In A (Russian) Language-Literature Classroom, Sofya Yunusova

Russian Language Journal

The purpose of this article is to conceptualize affective processes in reading literature in a foreign language. While generations of scholars and methodologists have stressed the educational potential of literary texts in terms of engaging learners’ emotions, the field has a relatively poor research base for discussing what these reading-induced emotions are and how to systematically promote them in a language-literature classroom. To this end, the current study first conceptualizes the different types of emotions that are arguably involved in reading literature in a foreign language and then formulates a set of pedagogical principles to foster their emergence in a …

Chronic, Mild Hypothermic Environmental Temperature Does Not Ameliorate Cognitive Deficits In An Alzheimer's Disease Mouse., Samuel Mcfadden, Lindsey N Sime, Makayla F Cox, Caleigh A Findley, Mackenzie R Peck, Kathleen Quinn, Yimin Fang, Andrzej Bartke, Erin R Hascup, Kevin N Hascup

Articles

Metabolic dysfunction increases with age and is a contributing factor to Alzheimer's disease (AD) development. We have previously observed impaired insulin sensitivity and glucose homeostasis in the APP/PS1 model of AD. To improve these parameters, we chronically exposed male and female mice to mild hypothermic environmental temperature (eT), which positively modulates metabolism. Although a hypothermic eT normalized insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance was still impaired in both sexes of AD mice. We observed increased plasma glucagon and B-cell activating factor in both sexes, but additional sexually dimorphic mechanisms may explain the impaired glucose homeostasis in AD mice. Hepatic Glut2 was decreased …

Plansplaining Ceqa: Explaining The Basics Of The California Environmental Quality Act, Eric Yu Wang Jun 2023

Plansplaining Ceqa: Explaining The Basics Of The California Environmental Quality Act, Eric Yu Wang

City and Regional Planning

The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) is a half-century old public disclosure law. In recent years, it has attracted public attention in its role in hindering essential developments such as affordable housing and other major public projects. Throughout its lifetime, CEQA has evolved from a simple public project disclosure law into a complex system. However, because of the spread of sensationalized media, CEQA has become frequently mystified and misunderstood by the public.

Through a six-video series called Plansplaining CEQA, the YouTube channel Plansplainer seeks to de-mystify California's unique and infamous public disclosure law. The videos are made to accessible …

Using The Lens Of Flourishing To Understand The Professional Well-Being Of K-12 Teachers Who Have Worked In Urban Schools For Over A Decade, Candis M. Thomas Jun 2023

Using The Lens Of Flourishing To Understand The Professional Well-Being Of K-12 Teachers Who Have Worked In Urban Schools For Over A Decade, Candis M. Thomas

Dissertations

Historically, urban public schools with high concentrations of high-poverty, low-achieving students, report having difficulty attracting, developing, and retaining qualified and effective teachers (Ansley et al, 2019; Petty et.al, 2012; Simon & Johnson, 2015; Wilder, 2012). A common explanation to the attrition crisis in urban schools is that teachers are suffering from stressors (e.g., student characteristics, school climate, concerns for safety, lack of parental support, accountability measures), that leaves them burnt out. Yet, there are experienced and qualified K-12 teachers who are committed to working in these schools. Advances in the field of positive psychology, has spilled over into the educational …

Western Kentucky University Stormwater Utility Survey 2023, Warren Campbell, Emily G. Davis Jun 2023

Western Kentucky University Stormwater Utility Survey 2023, Warren Campbell, Emily G. Davis

SEAS Faculty Publications

The main goal of this survey is to identify as many U.S. Stormwater Utilities (SWUs) as possible. Because many stormwater professionals do not have the time to respond to questionnaires, our primary method of identification was Internet searches. We searched key terms such as “stormwater utility”, “stormwater fee”, and “drainage fee”. We scoured online municipal codes such as Municode, AmLegal, Sterling, LexisNexis, General Code, and others. We searched through many city web websitesing to find utilities. We have also had many people contact me to update fees and identify new utilities. However, the data primarily comes from Internet sources and …

Impact Of Zein And Lignin-Plga Biopolymer Nanoparticles Used As Pesticide Nanocarriers On Soybean Growth And Yield Under Field Conditions, Colin A.R. Bonser, Jaya Borgatta, Jason C. White, Carlos E. Astete, Cristina M. Sabliov, Jeffrey A. Davis

Faculty Publications

Nanoparticles are being utilized in agriculture as fertilizers, pesticides, and agrochemical-carriers. Designed to be biocompatible and degradable, biopolymer nanoparticles were developed as an alternative to metallic nanoparticles, and though safe-by-design, polymeric nanoparticles must be field-tested prior to largescale use. Several field studies were conducted to observe detrimental effects of biopolymer nanoparticles on plant growth and yield using soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., as a model system. Biopolymer nanoparticles made from lignin or zein were applied as seed treatments to soybean seeds or as foliar sprays (zein only) to soybean plants. Studies using biopolymer nanoparticle seed treatments (nano-STs) measured the germination …

Black Soldier Fly Frass Supports Plant Growth And Reduces Nitrogen Leaching During Coleus Production, Jeffrey Beasley, Jeff Kuehny, Thanos Gentimis, Jeb Fields

Faculty Publications

Industrial insect rearing is expected to increase as a feedstock to meet growing global food demand. This will lead to greater production of insect excreta known as frass, a nutrient-dense organic material that has shown promise as a natural fertilizer source with potential environmental benefits. In this study, black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) frass (BSFF) was compared with a synthetic fertilizer (SF) during production of containerized ornamentals grown under greenhouse conditions. Fertilizers were incorporated into a bark-based substrate at 0, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3 kg.m–3 nitrogen (N) planted with coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides) plugs. Growth index, shoot dry weight, and leaf …

Combining Visual Cues And Pheromone Blends For Monitoring And Management Of The Tarnished Plant Bug Lygus Lineolaris (Hemiptera: Miridae), Justin George, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Nathan Little, Sarah E.J. Arnold, David R. Hall Jun 2023

Combining Visual Cues And Pheromone Blends For Monitoring And Management Of The Tarnished Plant Bug Lygus Lineolaris (Hemiptera: Miridae), Justin George, Gadi V.P. Reddy, Nathan Little, Sarah E.J. Arnold, David R. Hall

Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: The tarnished plant bug Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) is considered the most damaging pest of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in the mid-southern United States. Previous studies have reported the role of different ratios of volatile metathoracic gland components such as hexyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate and (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal in eliciting low-level attraction of L. lineolaris. In this study, we tested different visual cues (colored sticky cards) in combination with olfactory cues (pheromone blends) to optimize the attraction and capture of L. lineolaris in the field. RESULTS: Red-colored sticky cards were more attractive to L. lineolaris adults than white, blue or …

Battling Bots: Experiences And Strategies To Mitigate Fraudulent Responses In Online Surveys, Brittney Goodrich, Marieke Fenton, Jerrod Penn, John Bovay, Travis Mountain

Faculty Publications

Declining survey response rates have driven many researchers to seek out cost-effective methods of increasing participation, such as conducting surveys online, paying incentives, and using social media to engage hard-to-reach populations. Malicious actors can exploit the monetary incentives and anonymity of online surveys, threatening the integrity of survey data. We share two recent experiences conducting online surveys that were inundated with fraudulent responses. Our objective is to increase awareness of this emerging issue and offer guidance for others to mitigate the effects of fraudulent responders in their own research.

Hypothetical Bias Mitigation In Representative And Convenience Samples, Jerrod M. Penn, Daniel R. Petrolia, J. Matthew Fannin Jun 2023

Hypothetical Bias Mitigation In Representative And Convenience Samples, Jerrod M. Penn, Daniel R. Petrolia, J. Matthew Fannin

Faculty Publications

This is a case study comparing outcomes for a probability-based representative sample versus a non-probability convenience sample for the valuation of beach condition information among Gulf of Mexico residents. We test the efficacy of several techniques used to adjust for hypothetical bias and sample weighting to reduce hypothetical willingness to pay (WTP). Weighting makes the WTP between the two samples similar, but model equivalence with respect to the significance of explanatory variables is rejected. The results support the use of certainty follow-ups, which consistently reduced WTP, regardless of the sampling approach or weighting.
