Reasoning The Voice: Toward A Diagnostic And Prescriptive Technique In The Teaching Of Singing, Carlos E. Santelli
Reasoning The Voice: Toward A Diagnostic And Prescriptive Technique In The Teaching Of Singing, Carlos E. Santelli
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Voice pedagogy literature often draws a parallel between a doctor’s ability to diagnose illness and prescribe treatment, and a voice teacher’s ability to identify vocal obstacles and design solutions. The core of these parallel procedures lies in an ability to utilize critical reasoning skills within highly specific contexts. Medical literature describes this as “clinical reasoning” and has studied it as a learned process. Voice pedagogy literature has traditionally described this as an innate process which is solely developed through experience. This document broadly examines the ways in which medical literature has broken down clinical reasoning into specific cognitive processes and …

Two Essays On The Tax Consequences Of Auditor Litigation Risk : Evidence From Quasi-Natural Experiments, Felix Owusu
Two Essays On The Tax Consequences Of Auditor Litigation Risk : Evidence From Quasi-Natural Experiments, Felix Owusu
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
In the United States, auditors have legal liability to third parties under federal securities law and state common laws, which vary in the degree of liability. Whereas auditors are liable to security traders for fraud under the federal securities law, they are liable for ordinary negligence under common law. Using a sample of company-year observations from 1982 to 2015, I examine the implications of the adoption of common law statutes on audit client tax outcomes. My thesis consists of two essays. The first one examines how the staggered adoption of these common law principles that increased third-party auditor legal liability …

Defining Open Scholarly Infrastructure: A Review Of Relevant Literature, Saman Goudarzi, Richard Dunks
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
This report outlines IOI’s initial attempt towards a framework for understanding open infrastructure for research and scholarship. For this report, we examined a body of literature that includes works across the fields of anthropology, scholarly communications, international development studies, science and technology studies, and infrastructure studies. ....
This review also makes clear that the distinguishing feature between open infrastructure and its commercially-run and -operated counterparts is the fact that its value lies not just in its ability to support productive functions but how it fosters positive and desirable social practices and values. It is insufficient to simply assert certain values …
Cultural Values And Internalizing Symptoms Among Latinx Youth: The Role Of Gender, Paulina Paredes Cienega
Cultural Values And Internalizing Symptoms Among Latinx Youth: The Role Of Gender, Paulina Paredes Cienega
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Latinx youth are at a disproportionate risk for developing internalizing symptoms. The Integrative Model for the Study of Developmental Competencies suggests that cultural values can serve as protective factors against the development of mental health problems. Much less is known about the impact of multiple cultural values and their combined effects on internalizing symptoms in Latinx youth. Moreover, since gender influences socialization and cultural value endorsement, additional research is needed to examine how cultural values may differentially protect boys’ and girls’ mental health. This study addresses these gaps by examining a) supportive familism’s moderational role in the relation between affiliative …

Integrating Personality, Situational Ethical Cues And Proactive Ethical Behaviors : Implications For Work Performance And Well-Being, Yu Kou
Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)
Organizations and society can receive multiple benefits from employees’ ethical conduct. Business ethics is primarily studied from a reactive perspective, such as considering how people react to situational cues about ethics through engaging in ethical or unethical behaviors. Previous theoretical and empirical evidence suggested the importance of exploring the role of personality on work behavior and performance. Based on theories of personality psychology, this study takes an active, forward-looking approach by examining how individuals’ proactive personality and conscientiousness relate to a set of proactive ethical behaviors, and how those in turn affect individuals’ performance and well-being. Integrating with the trait …

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPis) have changed the treatment paradigm in breast cancer gene (BRCA)–mutant high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC). However, most patients eventually develop resistance to PARPis, highlighting an unmet need for improved therapeutic strategies. Using high-throughput drug screens, we identified ataxia telangiectasia and rad3-related protein/checkpoint kinase 1 (CHK1) pathway inhibitors as cytotoxic and further validated the activity of the CHK1 inhibitor (CHK1i) prexasertib in PARPi-sensitive and -resistant BRCA-mutant HGSC cells and xenograft mouse models. CHK1i monotherapy induced DNA damage, apoptosis, and tumor size reduction. We then conducted a phase 2 study (NCT02203513) of prexasertib …

Despite high rates of adolescent pregnancy and STD/Is, the state of Tennessee does not mandate comprehensive sexual education courses. Instead, family life education, more formally known as abstinence only sexual education, is only mandated if the pregnancy rate in the county is 19.5% per 1,000 15 to 17-year old’s. While there is significant literature condemning the use of abstinence only until marriage (AOUM) sex education, the outside religious and political influences of the area have prevented necessary sexual and reproductive health information from being communicated to our adolescents. To add insult to injury, restrictive legislation has been passed in 2023 …

Development And Characterization Of The Cellular Circadian Clock Of C2c12 Cells, Ali Akbari Beni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Abstract Circadian rhythms in mammalian physiology and behavior are generated through coherent rhythmic crosstalk between the central clock in the brain and peripheral clocks throughout the organs in our body. The molecular clocks responsible for these intrinsic rhythmic oscillations work based on interlocked transcription/translation feedback loops, which work together with various environmental and metabolic cues to produce internal 24-hour timing. This project established a stable cellular circadian clock model using the C2C12 cell line. This genetically tractable model contains an integrated luciferase reporter, which enables continuous luminescence recording of each circadian cycle. In order to examine this cellular circadian model, …

Use Only What You Need: Judicious Parallelism For File Transfers In High Performance Networks, Md Arifuzzaman, Engin Arslan
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Parallelism is key to efficiently utilizing high-speed research networks when transferring large volumes of data. However, the monolithic design of existing transfer applications requires the same level of parallelism to be used for reading, write, and network operations for file transfers. This, in turn, overburdens system resources since setting the parallelism level for the slowest component results in unnecessarily high parallelism for other components. Using more than necessary parallelism led to increased overhead on system resources and unfair resource allocation among competing transfers. In this paper, we introduce modular file transfer architecture, Marlin, to separate I/O and network operations for …

School of Art, Design and Architecture
Green infrastructure, particularly public greenspaces such as urban parks, plays an important role in urban environments, and improving public participation in greenspace practices and encouraging environmental stewardship can help to address some of the challenges of greenspace governance. We identify a gap in the research as to whether participation in citizen science projects can enhance connections between people and place and encourage better community participation in the stewardship of parks and urban greenspaces. The research adopts a Living Lab approach to utilise the inherent knowledge of the local community in developing digital experiments in the pilot site using a Nature …

Patients with a clinical indication for aortic valve replacement can either undergo surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) or Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI). There are many different factors that go into determining which type of replacement to undergo, including age, life expectancy, comorbidities, frailty, and patient preference. While both options offer significant benefits to patients in terms of clinical outcomes and quality of life, there is growing interest in expanding the indications for TAVI due to its minimally invasive approach. However, it is worth noting that there are several discrepancies in TAVI outcomes in regards to various endpoints, including death, …

Hyperpolarized-activated and cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels are the only members of the voltage-gated ion channel superfamily in mammals that open upon hyperpolarization, conferring them pacemaker properties that are instrumental for rhythmic firing of cardiac and neuronal cells. Activation of their voltage-sensor domains (VSD) upon hyperpolarization occurs through a downward movement of the S4 helix bearing the gating charges, which triggers a break in the alpha-helical hydrogen bonding pattern at the level of a conserved Serine residue. Previous structural and molecular simulation studies had however failed to capture pore opening that should be triggered by VSD activation, presumably because of a …
