Augmenting Low-Resource Text Classification With Graph-Grounded Pre-Training And Prompting, Zhihao Wen, Yuan Fang Jul 2023

Augmenting Low-Resource Text Classification With Graph-Grounded Pre-Training And Prompting, Zhihao Wen, Yuan Fang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

ext classification is a fundamental problem in information retrieval with many real-world applications, such as predicting the topics of online articles and the categories of e-commerce product descriptions. However, low-resource text classification, with few or no labeled samples, poses a serious concern for supervised learning. Meanwhile, many text data are inherently grounded on a network structure, such as a hyperlink/citation network for online articles, and a user-item purchase network for e-commerce products. These graph structures capture rich semantic relationships, which can potentially augment low-resource text classification. In this paper, we propose a novel model called Graph-Grounded Pre-training and Prompting (G2P2) …

Do-Good: Towards Distribution Shift Evaluation For Pre-Trained Visual Document Understanding Models, Jiabang He, Yi Hu, Lei Wang, Xing Xu, Ning Liu, Hui Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Numerous pre-training techniques for visual document understanding (VDU) have recently shown substantial improvements in performance across a wide range of document tasks. However, these pre-trained VDU models cannot guarantee continued success when the distribution of test data differs from the distribution of training data. In this paper, to investigate how robust existing pre-trained VDU models are to various distribution shifts, we first develop an out-of-distribution (OOD) benchmark termed Do-GOOD for the fine-Grained analysis on Document image-related tasks specifically. The Do-GOOD benchmark defines the underlying mechanisms that result in different distribution shifts and contains 9 OOD datasets covering 3 VDU related …

Silent Compiler Bug De-Duplication Via Three-Dimensional Analysis, Chen Yang, Junjie Chen, Xingyu Fan, Jiajun Jiang, Jun Sun Jul 2023

Silent Compiler Bug De-Duplication Via Three-Dimensional Analysis, Chen Yang, Junjie Chen, Xingyu Fan, Jiajun Jiang, Jun Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Compiler testing is an important task for assuring the quality of compilers, but investigating test failures is very time-consuming. This is because many test failures are caused by the same compiler bug (known as bug duplication problem). In particular, this problem becomes much more challenging on silent compiler bugs (also called wrong code bugs), since these bugs can provide little information (unlike crash bugs that can produce error messages) for bug de-duplication. In this work, we propose a novel technique (called D3) to solve the duplication problem on silent compiler bugs. Its key insight is to characterize the silent bugs …

Forward/Backward And Content Private Dsse For Spatial Keyword Queries, Xiangyu Wang, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Yinbin Miao, Yang Liu, Robert H. Deng Jul 2023

Forward/Backward And Content Private Dsse For Spatial Keyword Queries, Xiangyu Wang, Jianfeng Ma, Ximeng Liu, Yinbin Miao, Yang Liu, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Spatial keyword queries are attractive techniques that have been widely deployed in real-life applications in recent years, such as social networks and location-based services. However, existing solutions neither support dynamic update nor satisfy the privacy requirements in real applications. In this article, we investigate the problem of Dynamic Searchable Symmetric Encryption (DSSE) for spatial keyword queries. First, we formulate the definition of DSSE for spatial keyword queries (namely, DSSESKQ) and extend the DSSE leakage functions to capture the leakages in DSSESKQ. Then, we present a practical DSSESKQ construction based on geometric prefix encoding inverted-index and encrypted bitmap. Rigorous security analysis …

Fesa: Automatic Federated Swarm Attestation On Dynamic Large-Scale Iot Devices, Boyu Kuang, Anmin Fu, Yansong Gao, Yuqing Zhang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng Jul 2023

Fesa: Automatic Federated Swarm Attestation On Dynamic Large-Scale Iot Devices, Boyu Kuang, Anmin Fu, Yansong Gao, Yuqing Zhang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Swarm attestation, as an important branch of Remote Attestation (RA), enables a trusted party (verifier) to verify the security states of multiple devices (provers) in a large network (swarm) simultaneously via a challenge-response mechanism. However, swarm attestation suffers from significant redundancy overhead since all devices in the swarm need to be attested in each attestation round. Besides, it faces challenges such as verifier-impersonation Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, highly dynamic networks, transient & self-relocating malware, and Time-Of-Check-Time-Of-Use (TOCTOU) attacks. In this paper, considering not only the detection accuracy but also the privacy of swarm owners in real Internet of Things …

Discriminative Reasoning With Sparse Event Representation For Document-Level Event-Event Relation Extraction, Changsen Yuan, Heyan Huang, Yixin Cao, Yonggang Wen Jul 2023

Discriminative Reasoning With Sparse Event Representation For Document-Level Event-Event Relation Extraction, Changsen Yuan, Heyan Huang, Yixin Cao, Yonggang Wen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Document-level Event-Event Relation Extraction (DERE) aims to extract relations between events in a document. It challenges conventional sentence-level task (SERE) with difficult long-text understanding. In this paper, we propose a novel DERE model (SENDIR) for better document-level reasoning. Different from existing works that build an event graph via linguistic tools, SENDIR does not require any prior knowledge. The basic idea is to discriminate event pairs in the same sentence or span multiple sentences by assuming their different information density: 1) low density in the document suggests sparse attention to skip irrelevant information. Our module 1 designs various types of attention …

Is Web3 Better Than Web2 For Investors? Evidence From Domain Name Auctions, Ping Fan Ke, Yi Meng Lau, Daniel Varghese Hanley

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Blockchain-based assets are commonly believed to attract new investors. To investigate this claim, we compared investor preferences for Web2 and Web3 domain name auctions by analyzing daily auction patterns in Namecheap and OpenSea. Our results indicate that Web3 platforms may attract extreme investors with low or high values as a niche market. We found a significantly higher number of bids per auction, higher average bid prices, and greater price spreads on OpenSea, but a significantly lower number of unique bidders per auction. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the auction platform's characteristics and asset context when evaluating bid patterns …

Generative Ai And Chatgpt Impact On Technostress Of Teachers, Xuenan Huo, Keng Siau Jul 2023

Generative Ai And Chatgpt Impact On Technostress Of Teachers, Xuenan Huo, Keng Siau

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, is a disruptive technology with significant impacts on education. While it has the potential to transform the delivery and accessibility of education, it can also undermine educational effectiveness by facilitating academic honesty and creating technostress for educators. This study aims to (i) evaluate the extent to which Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, brings technostress to teachers and (ii) how Generative AI changes teachers' professional identities and the technostress that results from such changes. We hypothesize that techno-eustress and techno-distress are determined by three types of self-discrepancies concerning professional identity construction: actual-ought, actual-ideal, and ought-ideal discrepancies. …

Strategy‑Aware Bundle Recommender System, Yinwei Wei, Xiaohao Liu, Yunshan Ma, Xiang Wang, Liqiang Nie, Tat‑Seng Chua Jul 2023

Strategy‑Aware Bundle Recommender System, Yinwei Wei, Xiaohao Liu, Yunshan Ma, Xiang Wang, Liqiang Nie, Tat‑Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A bundle is a group of items that provides improved services to users and increased profits for sellers. However, locating the desired bundles that match the users' tastes still challenges us, due to the sparsity issue. Despite the remarkable performance of existing approaches, we argue that they seldom consider the bundling strategy (i.e., how the items within a bundle are associated with each other) in the bundle recommendation, resulting in the suboptimal user and bundle representations for their interaction prediction. Therefore, we propose to model the strategy-aware user and bundle representations for the bundle recommendation.Towards this end, we develop a …

Multi-Target Backdoor Attacks For Code Pre-Trained Models, Yanzhou Li, Shangqing Liu, Kangjie Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Tianwei Zhang, Yang Liu Jul 2023

Multi-Target Backdoor Attacks For Code Pre-Trained Models, Yanzhou Li, Shangqing Liu, Kangjie Chen, Xiaofei Xie, Tianwei Zhang, Yang Liu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Backdoor attacks for neural code models have gained considerable attention due to the advancement of code intelligence. However, most existing works insert triggers into task-specific data for code-related downstream tasks, thereby limiting the scope of attacks. Moreover, the majority of attacks for pre-trained models are designed for understanding tasks. In this paper, we propose task-agnostic backdoor attacks for code pre-trained models. Our backdoored model is pre-trained with two learning strategies (i.e., Poisoned Seq2Seq learning and token representation learning) to support the multi-target attack of downstream code understanding and generation tasks. During the deployment phase, the implanted backdoors in the victim …

Beyond "Protected" And "Private": An Empirical Security Analysis Of Custom Function Modifiers In Smart Contracts, Yuzhou Fang, Daoyuan Wu, Xiao Yi, Shuai Wang, Yufan Chen, Mengjie Chen, Yang Liu, Lingxiao Jiang Jul 2023

Beyond "Protected" And "Private": An Empirical Security Analysis Of Custom Function Modifiers In Smart Contracts, Yuzhou Fang, Daoyuan Wu, Xiao Yi, Shuai Wang, Yufan Chen, Mengjie Chen, Yang Liu, Lingxiao Jiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A smart contract is a piece of application-layer code running on blockchain ledgers and it provides programmatic logic via transaction-based execution of pre-defined functions. Smart contract functions are by default invokable by any party. To safeguard them, the mainstream smart contract language, i.e., Solidity of the popular Ethereum blockchain, proposed a unique language-level keyword called “modifier,” which allows developers to define custom function access control policies beyond the traditional “protected” and “private” modifiers in classic programming languages. In this paper, we aim to conduct a large-scale security analysis of the modifiers used in real-world Ethereum smart contracts. To achieve this, we …

Learning Deep Time-Index Models For Time Series Forecasting, Jiale Gerald Woo, Chenghao Liu, Doyen Sahoo, Akshat Kumar, Steven Hoi Jul 2023

Learning Deep Time-Index Models For Time Series Forecasting, Jiale Gerald Woo, Chenghao Liu, Doyen Sahoo, Akshat Kumar, Steven Hoi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Deep learning has been actively applied to time series forecasting, leading to a deluge of new methods, belonging to the class of historicalvalue models. Yet, despite the attractive properties of time-index models, such as being able to model the continuous nature of underlying time series dynamics, little attention has been given to them. Indeed, while naive deep timeindex models are far more expressive than the manually predefined function representations of classical time-index models, they are inadequate for forecasting, being unable to generalize to unseen time steps due to the lack of inductive bias. In this paper, we propose DeepTime, a …

18 Million Links In Commit Messages: Purpose, Evolution, And Decay, Tao Xiao, Sebastian Baltes, Hideaki Hata, Christoph Treude, Raula Kula, Takashi Ishio, Kenichi Matsumoto

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Commit messages contain diverse and valuable types of knowledge in all aspects of software maintenance and evolution. Links are an example of such knowledge. Previous work on “9.6 million links in source code comments” showed that links are prone to decay, become outdated, and lack bidirectional traceability. We conducted a large-scale study of 18,201,165 links from commits in 23,110 GitHub repositories to investigate whether they suffer the same fate. Results show that referencing external resources is prevalent and that the most frequent domains other than github.com are the external domains of Stack Overflow and Google Code. Similarly, links serve as …

Knowledge-Enhanced Mixed-Initiative Dialogue System For Emotional Support Conversations, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Yifei Yuan, Wai Lam Jul 2023

Knowledge-Enhanced Mixed-Initiative Dialogue System For Emotional Support Conversations, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Yifei Yuan, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unlike empathetic dialogues, the system in emotional support conversations (ESC) is expected to not only convey empathy for comforting the help-seeker, but also proactively assist in exploring and addressing their problems during the conversation. In this work, we study the problem of mixed-initiative ESC where the user and system can both take the initiative in leading the conversation. Specifically, we conduct a novel analysis on mixed-initiative ESC systems with a tailor-designed schema that divides utterances into different types with speaker roles and initiative types. Four emotional support metrics are proposed to evaluate the mixed-initiative interactions. The analysis reveals the necessity …

Peerda: Data Augmentation Via Modeling Peer Relation For Span Identification Tasks, Weiwen Xu, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Wai Lam, Lidong Bing Jul 2023

Peerda: Data Augmentation Via Modeling Peer Relation For Span Identification Tasks, Weiwen Xu, Xin Li, Yang Deng, Wai Lam, Lidong Bing

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Span identification aims at identifying specific text spans from text input and classifying them into pre-defined categories. Different from previous works that merely leverage the Subordinate (SUB) relation (i.e. if a span is an instance of a certain category) to train models, this paper for the first time explores the Peer (PR) relation, which indicates that two spans are instances of the same category and share similar features. Specifically, a novel Peer Data Augmentation (PeerDA) approach is proposed which employs span pairs with the PR relation as the augmentation data for training. PeerDA has two unique advantages: (1) There are …

Product Question Answering In E-Commerce: A Survey, Yang Deng, Wenxuan Zhang, Qian Yu, Wai Lam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Product question answering (PQA), aiming to automatically provide instant responses to customer’s questions in E-Commerce platforms, has drawn increasing attention in recent years. Compared with typical QA problems, PQA exhibits unique challenges such as the subjectivity and reliability of user-generated contents in E-commerce platforms. Therefore, various problem settings and novel methods have been proposed to capture these special characteristics. In this paper, we aim to systematically review existing research efforts on PQA. Specifically, we categorize PQA studies into four problem settings in terms of the form of provided answers. We analyze the pros and cons, as well as present existing …

Goal Awareness For Conversational Ai: Proactivity, Non-Collaborativity, And Beyond, Yang Deng, Wenqiang Lei, Minlie Huang, Tat-Seng Chua Jul 2023

Goal Awareness For Conversational Ai: Proactivity, Non-Collaborativity, And Beyond, Yang Deng, Wenqiang Lei, Minlie Huang, Tat-Seng Chua

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Conversational systems are envisioned to provide social support or functional service to human users via natural language interactions. Conventional conversation researches mainly focus on the responseability of the system, such as dialogue context understanding and response generation, but overlooks the design of an essential property in intelligent conversations, i.e., goal awareness. The awareness of goals means the state of not only being responsive to the users but also aware of the target conversational goal and capable of leading the conversation towards the goal, which is a significant step towards higher-level intelligence and artificial consciousness. It can not only largely improve …

Augmenting Fake Content Detection In Online Platforms: A Domain Adaptive Transfer Learning Via Adversarial Training Approach, Ka Chung Ng, Ping Fan Ke, Mike K. P. So, Kar Yan Tam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online platforms are experimenting with interventions such as content screening to moderate the effects of fake, biased, and incensing content. Yet, online platforms face an operational challenge in implementing machine learning algorithms for managing online content due to the labeling problem, where labeled data used for model training are limited and costly to obtain. To address this issue, we propose a domain adaptive transfer learning via adversarial training approach to augment fake content detection with collective human intelligence. We first start with a source domain dataset containing deceptive and trustworthy general news constructed from a large collection of labeled news …

The Rio Grande has irrigated agricultural land in central New Mexico since time immemorial. Today, agriculture in New Mexico’s Middle Rio Grande valley is adapting to an increasingly scarce water supply due to long-term drought and climate change (Dunbar et al., 2022). As supply is decreasing, demands are increasing because of several factors: an increase in evapotranspiration (Dunbar et al., 2022); population growth in the Middle Rio Grande valley (NM LFC, 2021); and legal obligations to provide water for endangered species and to Texas and Mexico (NM ISC, 2017). Agriculture is largest water use by sector in the Rio Grande …

Falling Into Gaps: Navigating Research Practices Across Global South And Global North, A Conversation, Sarah Ahmed, Navjotpal Kaur, Malida Mooken, Sumeet Sekhon

The Qualitative Report

This article is derived from conversations among four early career researchers on epistemic inequalities and challenges faced in universities, more especially in carrying out research. The conversations took place in the context of a qualitative research laboratory centered on the global South. We share experiences and issues associated with being trained as researchers in the global North and doing fieldwork in the global South. We also reflect on dominant structures and processes in universities and the marginalization of “other” or “alternative” knowledge systems. Whilst recognising the many ongoing and parallel academic discussions on such issues, we posit that there remains …
