Yates, N. (2023). To What Extent Do 3- to -6-Year-Olds Demonstrate Connection to Nature at a Montessori School in the Upper Midwest.
Young children are born into a world today with a drastically changing environmental climate. When young people develop an emotional attachment and sense of identity with nature, they may be more likely to behave in less destructive ways towards the planet and possibly live with a sense of responsibility and respect for nature. This mixed method study aimed to measure to what extent 3- to 6-year-olds demonstrated environmental sensitivity, awareness, and preferences at a nature-based Montessori school in …

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive type of breast cancer where no effective therapy has been developed. Here, we report that the natural product ER translocon inhibitor ipomoeassin F is a selective inhibitor of TNBC cell growth. A proteomic analysis of TNBC cells revealed that ipomoeassin F significantly reduced the levels of ER molecular chaperones, including PDIA6 and PDIA4, and induced ER stress, unfolded protein response (UPR) and autophagy in TNBC cells. Mechanistically, ipomoeassin F, as an inhibitor of Sec61α-containing ER translocon, blocks ER translocation of PDIA6, inducing its proteasomal degradation. Silencing of PDIA6 or PDIA4 by RNA interferences …

Surveillance And The Future Of Work: Exploring Employees’ Attitudes Toward Monitoring In A Post-Covid Workplace, Jessica Vitak, Michael Zimmer
Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
The future of work increasingly focuses on the collection and analysis of worker data to monitor communication, ensure productivity, reduce security threats, and assist in decision-making. The COVID-19 pandemic increased employer reliance on these technologies; however, the blurring of home and work boundaries meant these monitoring tools might also surveil private spaces. To explore workers’ attitudes toward increased monitoring practices, we present findings from a factorial vignette survey of 645 U.S. adults who worked from home during the early months of the pandemic. Using the theory of privacy as contextual integrity to guide the survey design and analysis, we unpack …

Online commerce has skyrocketed in recent years, and shoppers are purchasing goods or services online in greater numbers every year. The COVID-19 pandemic has only hastened the trend. One significant aspect of online shopping is the presence of consumer reviews posted by prior purchasers of goods or services, describing their experience with the products, the services and/or the selling merchant. A vast majority of online shoppers say that they rely on these reviews to help inform their purchasing decisions. Positive reviews can be tremendously beneficial to a business’ profitability, whereas negative reviews can be equally detrimental. Users of the internet …

Lift Force Analysis For An Electrodynamic Wheel Maglev Vehicle, Colton W. Bruce, Jonathan Bird, Matthew K. Grubbs
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper used an analytic based 3-D second order vector potential model to study the vertical dynamic force ripple and dynamic airgap height change when using a one pole-pair electrodynamic wheel (EDW) maglev vehicle. A one-pole pair EDW creates the lowest lift specific power; however transient finite element analysis (FEA) also shows that the one pole-pair EDW will create a large oscillating vertical force when maintaining a static airgap height. A dynamically coupled eddy current model was used to confirm that when the airgap length is allowed to change with time then an increase in vertical airgap creates a large …

Introduction. Peatlands have persisted for millennia, acting as globally-important sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide (Yu 2012) and regionally-important role sinks of pollutants, such as lead, arsenic, or mercury (toxic metals and metalloids, TMMs) (Bindler 2006). The role peatlands play in atmospheric carbon sequestration often overshadows their role in storing pollutants despite, for example, peat mercury accumulation rates increasing 60–130× relative to pre-industrial rates (Bindler 2006). Peatlands sustain their carbon and TMM sink persistence through a suite of ecohydrological feedbacks and plant traits (Souter and Watmough 2016, McCarter et al 2020). However, the interaction of climate change, land-use change and wildfire …

Scans of journal articles originally published in print, otherwise known as digital journal backfiles, benefit library patrons by providing near instantaneous access to important older information and full-text searchability. Digital backfiles can serve as a reliable surrogate for their corresponding print journals which could be removed from the library, freeing up space for other patron services. Both benefits are realized when the scanned articles are of sufficient clarity to replace the print versions. Several studies have analyzed small and subject-narrow sections of Elsevier’s digital backfile. This article contains a scan-quality analysis from 1578 journals that contain nearly four million articles …
Accurate Covariance Estimation For Pose Data From Iterative Closest Point Algorithm, Rick H. Yuan, Clark N. Taylor, Scott L. Nykl
Accurate Covariance Estimation For Pose Data From Iterative Closest Point Algorithm, Rick H. Yuan, Clark N. Taylor, Scott L. Nykl
Faculty Publications
One of the fundamental problems of robotics and navigation is the estimation of the relative pose of an external object with respect to the observer. A common method for computing the relative pose is the iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, where a reference point cloud of a known object is registered against a sensed point cloud to determine relative pose. To use this computed pose information in downstream processing algorithms, it is necessary to estimate the uncertainty of the ICP output, typically represented as a covariance matrix. In this paper, a novel method for estimating uncertainty from sensed data is …

The 998km Carajás railway corridor connects the world’s largest iron ore mine, operated by private mining company Vale S.A. (Vale) in Brazil’s northern state of Pará (PA), to the company’s maritime terminal in São Luís, the capital of the northeastern state of Maranhão (MA). Carajás is one of the few integrated railway corridors financed by a mining company that, apart from transporting the iron ore that made the infrastructure investments viable, also transports general cargo and operates passenger services along the corridor. This corridor was born from the Brazilian government’s plans in the mid1950s that foresaw the iron ore reserves …

Competition policy and antitrust law are experiencing a global renaissance. New market realities such as digital market gatekeepers, the financialization of firms, highly concentrated markets, a rising labor movement, industrial policy, and trade wars, among others, are radically reshaping how this policy area is understood and applied.
Sustainability concerns have also been a driving force for reconstituting antitrust to meet twenty-first century challenges. It is now widely accepted that competition policy – both its aims and its enforcement – has wider societal impacts beyond competition, including effects on democracy, economic inequality, growth and innovation, racial and gender imbalances, privacy, geopolitical …

An Evolutionary Comparative Study Of Congenital Stationary Night Blindness-Associated Trpm1 Genetic Variants Of Uncertain Significance In Horses And Humans Utilizing Caenorhabditis Elegans, Gabrielle Davis
Theses
Congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) is a heterogeneous collection of genetic diseases affecting the eyes and vision in horses and humans. Current research has implicated several genetic mutations impacting different genes involved in phototransduction and signal transmission, including TRPM1. In horses, genetic mutations in TRPM1 also result in a leopard spotting pattern or leopard complex. The goal of this study is to examine the potential impact of CSNB associated TRPM1 missense variants of uncertain significance (VUS). Previous research in Caenorhabditis elegans have revealed an orthologous TRPM1 gene known as gon-2 that allows for comparative studies. The evolutionary relationship of …

Enhancing And Securing Wireless Medical Technology For Diagnosis And Treatment Of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction, Farhath Zareen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lower urinary tract dysfunction (LUTD) is a debilitating medical condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Urodynamics is the current gold standard for diagnosing LUTD but uses non-physiologically fast, retrograde cystometric filling to obtain a brief snapshot of bladder function. Current state-of-the-art research in bladder monitoring includes ambulatory urodynamics using wireless implantable devices to evaluate bladder function during natural filling for long-term monitoring. However, there are various challenges and limitations to this multi-sensor approach. This research focuses on developing frameworks for automated event detection, data analysis, and optimization of long-term bladder recordingsto improve the diagnosis and treatment of LUTD. In …

Experimental research methods have a long history across a number of different disciplines—including consumer research. Although experiments are just one of many alternative research methods, experiments are notable because they are the best way to establish causation. This makes experiments a powerful tool when researchers need to show cause and effect relationships. In this article, we provide best practices for implementing experimental research methods in consumer studies. Specifically, we discuss several important topics researchers need to consider when designing experiments, including developing hypotheses, operationalizing the variables (manipulated or measured), deciding on the research design (between-subjects, within-subjects, or mixed), selecting the …

In 2022, there were significant changes to both family law legislation and case law. Relevant legislative changes include allowing litigants to seek attorney’s fees to retain a lawyer, allowing for temporary relocation, and clarifying when a change in circumstances is “contemplated” for purposes of modifying child support. Illinois courts also adjudicated cases across all areas of family law. These areas ranged from expanding on prior case precedent in areas like property division and allocation of parental responsibilities to establishing new precedent in others, including COVID-19 restrictions and allocation of frozen embryos.

Target Identification And Validation Of The Alpha7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor As A Potential Therapeutic Target In Retinal Disease, David M. Linn
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
The role of acetylcholine (ACh) in visual processing in the mammalian retina has been the focus of research for many decades. Pioneering work on the localization of ACh discovered that the neurotransmitter is synthesized and stored in a distinct subpopulation of amacrine (starburst) cells. It has been shown that ACh release is regulated to a low resting “tonic” level, much like what is observed at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). If there were a dysfunction in the tonic release of ACh, might post-synaptic changes render the targets of ACh [i.e., retinal ganglion cells (RGCs)] vulnerable to disease? During my time at …

Adhesion to living and non-living surfaces is an important virulence trait of the fungal pathogen Candida albicans. Biofilm formation in this organism depends on the expression of a number of cell surface proteins including the hypha-specific protein Als3p. Loss of ALS3 impairs biofilm formation and decreases cell-cell adhesion. We wanted to test whether constitutively expressing ALS3 could compensate for defects in adhesion and biofilm formation observed in mutant strains that lack key transcriptional regulators of biofilm formation Efg1p and Cph1p. We found that ALS3 improved adhesion and biofilm formation in the efg1Δ and efg1Δ cph1Δ mutant …

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa
Background Apnoea of prematurity (AOP) is a common condition among preterm infants. Methylxanthines, such as cafeine and aminophylline/theophylline, can help prevent and treat AOP. Due to its physiological benefts and fewer side efects, cafeine citrate is recommended for the prevention and treatment of AOP. However, cafeine citrate is not available in most resource-constrained settings (RCS) due to its high cost. Challenges in RCS using caffeine citrate to prevent AOP include identifying eligible preterm infants where gestational age is not always known and the capability for continuous monitoring of vital signs to readily identify apnoea. We aim to develop an evidencebased …

Acute iliofemoral deep vein thrombosis and chronic iliofemoral venous obstruction cause substantial patient harm and are increasingly managed with endovascular venous interventions, including percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy and stent placement. However, studies of these treatment elements have not been designed and reported with sufficient rigor to support confident conclusions about their clinical utility. In this project, the Trustworthy consensus-based statement approach was utilized to develop, via a structured process, consensus-based statements to guide future investigators of venous interventions. Thirty statements were drafted to encompass major topics relevant to venous study description and design, safety outcome assessment, efficacy outcome assessment, and topics …

The phytohormone auxin plays crucial roles in nearly every aspect of plant growth and development. Auxin signaling is activated through the phytohormone-induced proteasomal degradation of the Auxin/INDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID (Aux/IAA) family of transcriptional repressors. Notably, many auxin-modulated physiological processes are also regulated by nitric oxide (NO) that executes its biological effects predominantly through protein S-nitrosylation at specific cysteine residues. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms in regulating the interactive NO and auxin networks. Here, we show that NO represses auxin signaling by inhibiting IAA17 protein degradation. NO induces the S-nitrosylation of Cys-70 located in the intrinsically disordered region of …

We review a comprehensive risk assessment approach for percutaneous coronary interventions in older adults and highlight the relevance of geriatric syndromes within that broader perspective to optimize patient-centered outcomes in interventional cardiology practice. Reflecting the influence of geriatric principles in older adults undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions, we propose a "geriatric" heart team to incorporate the expertise of geriatric specialists in addition to the traditional heart team members, facilitate uptake of the geriatric risk assessment into the preprocedural risk assessment, and address ways to mitigate these geriatric risks. We also address goals of care in older adults, highlighting common priorities that …
