Create Engaging Library Resource Reading Lists, Ariana Baker, Allison Faix Jul 2023

Create Engaging Library Resource Reading Lists, Ariana Baker, Allison Faix

South Carolina Conference on Innovations in Teaching and Learning

Every university library has a myriad of online resources just waiting for faculty and students to discover and use. Faculty will find diverse types of materials (ebooks, journals, magazines, streaming videos, primary sources, images, etc.) that can support or supplement the content they are teaching, sometimes even making a traditional textbook unnecessary. But selecting and organizing items so that students can readily find and engage with them can be a time-consuming and daunting task. In this presentation, two academic librarians will offer suggestions to make it easier for faculty to create and manage engaging course reading lists. We will explore …

Podcast Implementation In An Entry-Level Doctor Of Physical Therapy First-Semester Course: Student Perceptions And Impact On Academic Performance, Michael Furtado, Jincy Arthungal, Allison Reynolds

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

Podcasts have increased in popularity in the last decade, but description of their use in academic settings is lacking. The purposes of this study were to (1) investigate the difference in student performance on course examinations based on podcast usage and satisfaction and (2) examine the perceptions of educational benefits, usage preferences, and accessibility of podcasts in a clinical examination course in a hybrid Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curriculum. This was a mixed-methods study that utilized a retrospective non-experimental correlational design, and data were collected and analyzed via self-report survey. Participants adopted five podcasts into learning and studying activities. …

“It Was As Much For Me As For Anybody Else”: The Creation Of Self-Validating Records, Michelle Caswell, Anna Robinson-Sweet Jul 2023

“It Was As Much For Me As For Anybody Else”: The Creation Of Self-Validating Records, Michelle Caswell, Anna Robinson-Sweet

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

How does it feel to create a record? What personal impact does it have to represent yourself in a record after being misrepresented in records created about you by someone else? Employing a participatory action research (PAR) research design alongside two community archives, this article answers these questions through empirical interview and focus group data collected from people who told and recorded their stories as part of participatory projects led by the Texas After Violence Project (TAVP) and the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA). Across interview and focus group data with storytellers from both SAADA and TAVP, many participants …

Show Or Tell? A Systematic Review Of Media And Information Literacy Measurements, Daniel Schofield, Reijo Petter Kupiainen, Vegard Marinius Frantzen, Anette Novak Jul 2023

Show Or Tell? A Systematic Review Of Media And Information Literacy Measurements, Daniel Schofield, Reijo Petter Kupiainen, Vegard Marinius Frantzen, Anette Novak

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Media and information literacy (MIL) is a key concept in several research fields and measuring the levels of MIL is considered valuable for policy stakeholders. However, the concept is complex, and few systematic reviews of research on measuring MIL levels have been conducted. This article draws on a systematic review of peer-reviewed studies measuring MIL between 2000 and 2021. Out of a total of 4008 publications, 236 were included in the analysis, and 87 were analysed in depth. A key finding was that several studies applied broad understandings of MIL, often based on initiatives by international organisations such as UNESCO, …

Online Media Literacy Intervention In Indonesia Reduces Misinformation Sharing Intention, Trenton Ford, Michael Yankoski, Matthew Facciani, Tim Weninger Jul 2023

Online Media Literacy Intervention In Indonesia Reduces Misinformation Sharing Intention, Trenton Ford, Michael Yankoski, Matthew Facciani, Tim Weninger

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Media literacy is widely viewed as an important tool in the fight against the spread of misinformation online. However, efforts to boost media literacy have primarily focused on Western-media and Western-oriented social media platforms, which are substantively different from the media and platforms used widely in the Global South. In the present work, we focus on the media ecosystem of Indonesia and report the results of an online media literacy intervention consisting of short-videos that were targeted specifically to social media users in Indonesia (N= 656). We found that participants in our media literacy intervention were 64% more …

Media Literacy And Covid-19 Communication: Work And Home Sphere Differences, Donnalyn Pompper, Tugce Ertem-Eray Jul 2023

Media Literacy And Covid-19 Communication: Work And Home Sphere Differences, Donnalyn Pompper, Tugce Ertem-Eray

Journal of Media Literacy Education

As a learning process wherein we ask questions to enhance knowledge, media literacy offers a powerful lens for examining how people practice communication across diverse applied contexts such as professional communicators shaping messages about COVID-19. Borrowing a page from Renee Hobbs’ (1998, 1999, 2010, 2011, 2021) media literacy education research, we sought to compare/contrast media content creators’ (journalism, advertising, public relations, marketing communication) information-seeking behaviors during the 2020-2022 COVID-19 pandemic for both their paid work and unpaid volunteer work, as well as for their own and family edification. Blending the media literacy lens with social construction theory (Berger & Luckmann, …

Digital literacy education is essential for everyone, including seniors to sustain their quality of life. The Digital Academy for Seniors aims to instill digital skills among seniors through a non-formal learning program. This qualitative research aimed to provide a comprehensive description of how the program can develop digital resilience and improve the quality of life of seniors. This study concluded that the program can improve the knowledge and attitudes of seniors in using digital media safely. Both of these are important assets for seniors to develop their digital resilience so that they can take advantage of digital media to support …

Filipino Students’ Competency In Evaluating Digital Media Content Credibility: ‘Beginning’ To ‘Emerging’ Levels, Margarita Felipe Fajardo Jul 2023

Filipino Students’ Competency In Evaluating Digital Media Content Credibility: ‘Beginning’ To ‘Emerging’ Levels, Margarita Felipe Fajardo

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study investigates Filipino students’ reasoning competency levels in evaluating the credibility of digital media content and whether significant statistical differences exist in their competency by education status, sex, age group, Internet use, and geographical location. Four hundred twenty-four students representing the senior high school, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels responded to four modified versions of the Stanford History Education Group’s civic online reasoning tasks. The study found that most students have ‘beginning’ competency levels in author-checking, fact-checking, and bias-checking but ‘emerging’ competency levels for image-checking. Younger students and those who spend more hours online have higher mean competency levels for …

Social Media Literacy: Sociocultural Instruction And Community College Students, Angela Kohnen, Christine Wusylko, Max Sommer Jul 2023

Social Media Literacy: Sociocultural Instruction And Community College Students, Angela Kohnen, Christine Wusylko, Max Sommer

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Although literacy researchers have paid increasing attention to online information literacy, curricula are usually centered around webpages rather than social media, which is the more popular media platform for young adults. We developed and introduced a social media literacy curriculum to a summer bridge program for marginalized community college students. Our instruction was designed to center and build on students’ lived experiences, and we found that students purposes for using social media and their knowledge of credible sources was not aligned with traditional approaches to information literacy. Students perceived social media as a tool for fun and connectivity and their …

Elementary School Students’ Information Literacy: Instructional Design And Evaluation Of A Pilot Training Focused On Misinformation, Benedikt Artmann, Christian Scheibenzuber, Nicolae Nistor

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Online news literacy training has been so far insufficiently conducted and evaluated, and even less so with younger news consumers. Against the backdrop of online news cognitive processing, interventions against misinformation, and inquiry-based learning, we designed, conducted, and evaluated a pilot online news literacy training with 36 elementary school students from Germany. In a causal comparison, quantitative data from N = 29 students attest high participant acceptance and substantial effects of the inquiry-based training on participants’ ability to correctly assess online news credibility, and on the corresponding cognitive processing route, moving this from intuitive to analytic processing. Despite the small …

More Than Fabricated News Reports: Children’S Perspectives And Experiences Of Fake News, Henriikka Vartiainen, Juho Kahila, Matti Tedre, Erkko Sointu, Teemu Valtonen

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study aims to explore what kinds of social media services children use in their everyday lives, how children describe their strategies for spotting fake news, and what kinds of fake news they report having encountered in their lived experiences. The article is based on an online questionnaire conducted in Finnish comprehensive schools with children and young people (N = 167) aged 12–15. The results show that children are active users of various social media services and that they accessed social media every day. Children perceived the fake news as much more than fabricated news reports and weaved them together …

Parental Education In Media Literacy, Social Media And Internet Safety For Children In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Dragana Trninić, Anđela Kuprešanin Vukelić, Jovana Mlinarević Jul 2023

Parental Education In Media Literacy, Social Media And Internet Safety For Children In Bosnia And Herzegovina, Dragana Trninić, Anđela Kuprešanin Vukelić, Jovana Mlinarević

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Parents have a great responsibility to protect their children while online, and to make sure that they are using digital technologies in a safe manner; at the same time, parents are not sufficiently educated and are unfamiliar with all regulatory mechanisms and possibilities of controlling and protecting their children online. Children need some help to take advantage of all positive aspects of digital trends and to protect themselves from those which are potentially negative. The international framework in the legal sense, which is in charge of standardizing the protection of the interests and rights of children on the Internet, is …

Shared Epiphanies Of My Constantly Challenged Linguistic Membership, Fajer M. Bin Rashed Jul 2023

Shared Epiphanies Of My Constantly Challenged Linguistic Membership, Fajer M. Bin Rashed

International Journal for Research in Education

The pluralization of English has enabled the use of its varieties in cultural contexts that are not traditionally associated with the language. Yet, the inequality of Englishes remains a main characteristic of globalizing and localizing the language. The spread of English use in Kuwait was a result of establishing reconfigured imperial relations during the British protectorate era. Mediated by language ideologies, the English language has ‘settled’ Kuwait’s local linguistic ecology, and its spread remains sustained by the imposition of colonial practices and ideologies through contemporary processes of capitalist globalization. I argue that the pluralization of English in Kuwait’s nuanced experience …

‘I Don’T Speak Singlish’ – Linguistic Chutzpah And Denial In The Elt Classroom, Luke Lu Jul 2023

‘I Don’T Speak Singlish’ – Linguistic Chutzpah And Denial In The Elt Classroom, Luke Lu

International Journal for Research in Education

In Singapore, dominant narratives of Singlish as ‘bad English’ and an impediment to acquiring the Standard co-exist with discourses about Singlish as a marker of Singaporean identity. One consequence of such competing discourses has been characterised as a polarity between linguistic anxiety about Singaporeans’ proficiency in Standard English on the one hand, and rationalised confidence in using both registers appropriately on the other [that Wee (2014) terms ‘linguistic chutzpah’]. This paper examines a third phenomenon that is neither exclusively anxiety nor chutzpah in a specific site where metapragmatic evaluations of Englishes abound – the ELT classroom. Drawing on data from …

Confronting The Political Economy Of Englishes In The Classroom, Katy Highet Jul 2023

Confronting The Political Economy Of Englishes In The Classroom, Katy Highet

International Journal for Research in Education

Despite celebratory discourses of Global English(es), scholars adopting political economic approaches have demonstrated the continued unequal distribution and valuation of English(es), and have shifted the focus to questions of unequal speakers in unequal conditions (Tupas, 2020). Drawing on ethnographic data from an English-teaching NGO for ‘disadvantaged’ young adults in Delhi, this paper seeks to contribute to political economic scholarship of English Language Teaching and Learning in two ways. In a first instance, I trace the shaping effects of class, caste and coloniality on how marginalised students orient themselves to notions of correctness and discursively reject fluid language practices. In a …

Lived Experiences Of Unequal Englishes Of Filipino Domestic Workers In Hong Kong, Nicanor L. Guinto Jul 2023

Lived Experiences Of Unequal Englishes Of Filipino Domestic Workers In Hong Kong, Nicanor L. Guinto

International Journal for Research in Education

In this paper, I investigate the lived experiences with English of Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong from roughly 30 hours of recorded ethnographic interviews and fieldwork with 28 key participants talking about language in relation to their living and working experiences. Employing linguistic ethnographic approaches to analysis, I describe recurring accounts reflecting the tension between doing being an English-proficient and an English-deficient other: a tension that emanates from enabling and constraining sociolinguistic conditions in the workplace and the host society, and informed by participants’ experiences and education from their home country. I demonstrate how participants seem to discursively invoke …

Effect Of The Natural Pozzolanic Basalt On High Strength Concrete, Mohamed Sayed Mohamed Moawad, Abd El-Rahman Ragab, Shimaa Younis

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Concrete is important construction material in civil applications. Portland Cement (PC) is considered the essential component material to produce the concrete, especially in high-strength concrete. Around ranging from 5-7% of CO2 was generated during PC production. Consequently, the concrete and PC production are change in the environment. So; it has become very important for the construction industry to focus on minimizing environmental pollution, energy consumption reduction. Several pozzolanic cementitious materials can be added as a fractional replacement of cement in concrete to reduce PC impact on environmental pollution. Pozzolanic materials include PC as one of its main components as well …

Communities At Risk For Mpox And Stigmatizing Policies: A Randomized Survey, Republic Of Korea, 2022, Ashley Fox, Yongjin Choi

Public Administration and Policy Faculty Scholarship

Objectives. To estimate the impact of communicating to the public that men who have sex with men (MSM) are most at risk for mpox on potential stigmatization and risk perception.

Methods. We conducted a survey experiment randomizing exposure to messages about mpox among a sample of the South Korean public (n51500) in July 2022. We randomized respondents to receive an informational message about mpox that was (1) a neutral informational message about mpox that did not highlight its origins or risk groups (control group), (2) a message explaining that the virus originated in Africa, or (3) a message emphasizing that …

Machiavelli, The “Prince” Of Popular Government Or Radical Aristocrat?, Brian Dresnin Jul 2023

Machiavelli, The “Prince” Of Popular Government Or Radical Aristocrat?, Brian Dresnin

Politics Summer Fellows

Machiavelli's book, The Discourses, argues for republican government through analyzing Roman historian Titus Livy's History of Rome. In this essay, I argue that contrary to the influential view of scholars, such as John McCormick, that The Discourses argues in favor of a popular republic, the decemvirate episode shows that Machiavelli favors an aristocratic republic, a view expressed by just a few scholars, including Harvey Mansfield. Like many other readers of Machiavelli, I suppose that Machiavelli’s thought sheds light on contemporary issues, such as populism and class conflict in politics. But understanding Machiavelli as an aristocratic republican changes our …

Up The Bayou Without A Paddle: A Historical Case Study Of Black Catholic Education In New Orleans Post-Katrina, Anisha Morrell

Dissertations

By concentrating on one of the tenets of Critical Race Theory (Harper et al., 2009), counter-narrative, this study focused on: (1) the history of New Orleans prior to the Louisiana Purchase; (2) the inception, history, and advancements of Black Catholic education prior to Brown v. Board of Education; and (3) controversies in Black Catholic education post-Katrina.

By delving into the history of New Orleans, I will assert that The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans struggled with whiteness as property and an ardent desire to present a narrative embodied by interest convergence in historically-Black Catholic secondary schools since each school’s …
