Natriuretic Peptide Biomarkers In The Imminent Development Of Preeclampsia., Stefanie Marek-Iannucci, Estefania Oliveros, Yevgeniy Brailovsky, Preethi Pirlamarla, Amanda Roman, Indranee Rajapreyar

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

Preeclampsia is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in pregnancy, the incidence being significantly higher in low-income countries with reduced access to health care. Women with preeclampsia are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease with a poorer long-term outcome. Early recognition and treatment are key to improving short- and long-term outcomes. Approximately 3%-5% of pregnant women will develop preeclampsia, with potentially fatal outcomes. Despite ongoing research, the exact pathophysiologic mechanism behind its development remains unclear. In this brief report, we describe the potential role of natriuretic peptides as biomarkers in the imminent development of preeclampsia. In …

Are Shrubs A Necessary Component Of The Habitat For Ammospermophilus Nelsoni In The San Joaquin Desert?, David J. Germano, Larry R. Saslaw

Western North American Naturalist

The San Joaquin antelope squirrel (Ammospermophilus nelsoni; SJAS) is a state-listed Threatened species in California that evolved in the shrublands of the San Joaquin Desert. Due to livestock overgrazing and fires, much of the desert has lost its shrub cover, which would be a conservation concern if shrubs are a necessary component of the habitat for squirrels. We established two 64-trap plots on the Lokern area of Kern County, California: one covered by saltbush scrub (Atriplex spp.) and another nearby without shrubs. We trapped quarterly starting in January 2019 and ending in November 2021 (12 trap sessions). …

Willingness To Prepare For Disasters Among Individuals With Disabilities: An Essential Component For Building Disaster Resiliency, Dean Kyne

Sociology Faculty Publications

This study focuses on exploring the factors influencing individuals’ preparedness for disasters. Drawing upon the protection motivation theory (PMT) and the prototype willingness model (PWM), a conceptual framework was proposed to investigate the determinants of willingness to prepare for disasters and its impact on disaster preparedness. Data was collected through an online survey, involving 377 participants with disabilities and medical special needs residing in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV). The collected data was analyzed using generalized structural equation modeling (GSEM) to examine the associations among the selected study variables. The findings indicate that both coping appraisal and threat appraisal significantly …

Beyond “Glittering Hope”: Introducing Max Stirner’S Unique Possibilities To Social Work, Erica Fonseca Jul 2023

Beyond “Glittering Hope”: Introducing Max Stirner’S Unique Possibilities To Social Work, Erica Fonseca

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Max Stirner (1806-1856) is an iconoclastic 19th-century philosopher who, despite a period of obscurity, has remained somewhat influential – particularly within segments of the anarchist milieu. This conceptual article maintains Stirner’s writing has something to offer social work thinking and practice. Using Stirner’s most influential work, The Ego and Its Own, I will present three of Stirner’s terms: Specters, The Creative Nothing, and Ownness. I conclude with a presentation of three “unique” prospects for social work that draws from Stirner’s anti-teleological and anti-foundationalist approach to liberation.

Ki-Cook: Clustering Multimodal Cooking Representations Through Knowledge-Infused Learning, Revathy Venkataramanan, Swati Padhee, Saini Rohan Rao, Ronak Kaoshik, Anirudh Sundara Rajan, Amit Sheth

Cross-modal recipe retrieval has gained prominence due to its ability to retrieve a text representation given an image representation and vice versa. Clustering these recipe representations based on similarity is essential to retrieve relevant information about unknown food images. Existing studies cluster similar recipe representations in the latent space based on class names. Due to inter-class similarity and intraclass variation, associating a recipe with a class name does not provide sufficient knowledge about recipes to determine similarity. However, recipe title, ingredients, and cooking actions provide detailed knowledge about recipes and are a better determinant of similar recipes. In this study, …

Denoising Cough Sound Recordings Using Neural Networks, Laya Jose, Shlomo Berkovsky, Hao Xiong, Cecilia Mascolo, Roneel V. Sharan

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

Objective cough sound evaluation is useful in the diagnosis and management of respiratory diseases. However, the performance of cough sound analysis models can degrade in the presence of background noises common in everyday environments. This brings forward the need for cough sound denoising. This work utilizes a method for denoising cough sound recordings using signal processing and machine learning techniques, inspired by research in the field of speech enhancement. It uses supervised learning to find a mapping between the noisy and clean spectra of cough sound signals using a fully connected feed-forward neural network. The method is validated on a …

Radical Urban Natures: Mitigating Urban Heat With Nature-Based Techniques In Portland, Oregon, Heather Day-Melgar Jul 2023

Radical Urban Natures: Mitigating Urban Heat With Nature-Based Techniques In Portland, Oregon, Heather Day-Melgar

Dissertations and Theses

Anthropogenic rising heat associated with climatic changes in the built environment has become a serious global issue. The built environment is often comprised of impermeable, paved surfaces, lack of vegetation to make way for development, tree removal, and loss or alteration of urban waterways, which leads to a degraded ecosystem for humans and non-human life, and less of an ability for carbon capture, all of which contribute to higher urban temperatures. This alteration of the existing natural environment leads to populations often unable to conceptualize that a built environment is still an ecosystem, and restoration is possible and necessary for …

BACKGROUND: Digital therapeutics, such as interventions provided via smartphones or the internet, have been proposed as promising solutions to support self-management in persons with chronic conditions. However, the evidence supporting self-management interventions through technology in stroke is scarce, and the intervention development processes are often not well described, creating challenges in explaining why and how the intervention would work.

OBJECTIVE: This study describes a specific use case of using intervention mapping (IM) and the taxonomy of behavior change techniques (BCTs) in designing a digital intervention to manage chronic symptoms and support daily life participation in people after stroke. IM is …

Wave Optics Approach To Solar Cell Brdf Modeling With Experimental Results, Madilynn Compean, Todd V. Small, Milo W. Hyde Iv, Michael Marciniak

Faculty Publications

Light curve analysis is often used to discern information about satellites in geosynchronous orbits. Solar panels, comprising a large part of the satellite’s body, contribute significantly to these light curves. Historically, theoretical bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs) have failed to capture key features in the scattered light from solar panels. In recently published work, a new solar cell BRDF was developed by combining specular microfacet and “two-slit” diffraction terms to capture specular and periodic/array scattering, respectively. This BRDF was experimentally motivated and predicted many features of the solar cell scattered irradiance. However, the experiments that informed the BRDF were limited …

Development And Calibration Of The Lmrpm Mid-Breton River Sediment Diversion Gate Operations, Emily E. Fertitta

LSU Master's Theses

With the rate of coastal land loss in Louisiana, the state is looking for innovative ways to help restore and maintain its coastal wetlands. Sediment diversions are going to be constructed along the Lower Mississippi River to mitigate the issues by diverting river water, sediment and nutrients into adjacent wetlands. Since there are currently no real-world applications of sediment diversions, the Lower Mississippi River Physical Model is a beneficial modeling tool to study the impact sediment diversions and relative sea level rise have on the hydraulics and sediment transport processes in the river. The two river sediment diversions on the …

Simplified And Highly-Reliable Automated Production Of [8f]Fspg For Clinical Studies, Mai Lin, Robert T Ta, H Charles Manning

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Background: (S)-4-(3-18F-Fluoropropyl)-L-Glutamic Acid ([18F]FSPG) is a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer that specifically targets the cystine/glutamate antiporter (xc-), which is frequently overexpressed in cancer and several neurological disorders. Pilot studies examining the dosimetry and biodistribution of [18F]FSPG in healthy volunteers and tumor detection in patients with non-small cell lung cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and brain tumors showed promising results. In particular, low background uptake in the brain, lung, liver, and bowel was observed that further leads to excellent imaging contrasts of [18F]FSPG PET. However, reliable production-scale cGMP-compliant automated procedures for [18F]FSPG production are still lacking to further increase the utility and …

J.R.R. Tolkien, Culture Warrior: The Alt-Right's Crusade Against The Tolkien Society's 2021 Summer Seminar On "Tolkien And Diversity", Robin A. Reid Dr.

Journal of Tolkien Research

In Verlyn Flieger's GOH speech at MythCon, "The Arch and the Keystone" (2019), she argues that the contradictions in Tolkien's own writing (fiction, non-fiction, and letters) is a primary cause of the "increasing fragmentation and polarization [among readers and scholars]," concluding that "[e]verybody has their own private Tolkien, more Tolkiens than you can shake a stick at" (9). In this presentation, I trace some attributes of the alt-right's "private Tolkien" which they have made public in forty plus online articles, some receiving a hundred or more public comments, during 2021-22. The articles (in periodicals and personal blogs) attacked, variously:

Artificial intelligence and, subsequently, machine learning are being applied to equip modern medicine with powerful tools to improve medical diagnoses. Image …

Multiscale Spillover Transmission In Chinas Investment Preferences Using Dynamic Stochastic Volatility Framework, Li. Yu, Mohd H. Yaacob, Du Buqi Jul 2023

Multiscale Spillover Transmission In Chinas Investment Preferences Using Dynamic Stochastic Volatility Framework, Li. Yu, Mohd H. Yaacob, Du Buqi

Information Sciences Letters

This paper aims to understand how volatility spreads in the financial system and affects security markets and financial crises. The researchers introduced a new approach using a multivariate stochastic volatility model with dynamic correlation and maximum overlap discrete wavelet. The approach can distinguish investment types and describe nonlinear volatility dynamics. Empirical analysis showed significant volatility spillovers between financial time series at different wavelet scales. Short-term investments had higher volatility spillovers than long-term investments, suggesting an interactive relationship between retail investors and long-term institutions and a shift from technology operations to value simulation.
