Rhetorical Simile Using Arabic Superlative Adjectives In The Holy Quran, Reem Zaid Al-Qahiz Dr. Jul 2023

Rhetorical Simile Using Arabic Superlative Adjectives In The Holy Quran, Reem Zaid Al-Qahiz Dr.

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

Emphasis is one of the common figures of speech in the Holy Quran; where it is usually used figuratively in order to create and assert meaning by comparing one thing to another thing. This rhetorical simile emphasizes the meaning intended and creates vivid pictures in the mind of the reader/listener, which increases the effectiveness of the figurative language used. In this study, the researcher examined a number of Quran verses that included examples of rhetorical simile, expressed using Arabic superlative adjectives. The effect created by rhetorical simile is that it gradually enhances the figurative picture painted to reach the climax …

An Acoustic Study Of Zilfaawi Arabic Vowels, Ammar Ahmed Alammar Dr. Jul 2023

An Acoustic Study Of Zilfaawi Arabic Vowels, Ammar Ahmed Alammar Dr.

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities

The present research provides an acoustic description of vowel quality and quantity in Zilfaawi Arabic (ZA). The vowel duration and the first (F1) and second (F2) formants were measured. Acoustic analysis of the ZA vowels /i/, /i:/, /a/, /a:/, /u/, /u:/, /e:/, /o:/ was performed using eight monosyllabic CVC words. Ten native speakers of ZA each read the carrier phrase five times, producing a total of 400 tokens. This study also examines whether these aspects differ between men and women. The results revealed that the phonemic vowel inventory of this Saudi dialect comprises three short and five long vowels. The …

Outcomes for patients with melanoma have improved over the past decade with the clinical development and approval of immunotherapies targeting immune checkpoint receptors such as programmed death-1 (PD-1), programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) or cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4). Combinations of these checkpoint therapies with other agents are now being explored to improve outcomes and enhance benefit-risk profiles of treatment. Alternative inhibitory receptors have been identified that may be targeted for anti-tumor immune therapy, such as lymphocyte-activation gene-3 (LAG-3), as have several potential target oncogenes for molecularly targeted therapy, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Unfortunately, many patients still progress and …

Subunit Gating Resulting From Individual Protonation Events In Kir2 Channels, Grigory Maksaev, Michael Bründl-Jirout, Anna Stary-Weinzinger, Eva-Maria Zangerl-Plessl, Sun-Joo Lee, Colin G Nichols Jul 2023

Subunit Gating Resulting From Individual Protonation Events In Kir2 Channels, Grigory Maksaev, Michael Bründl-Jirout, Anna Stary-Weinzinger, Eva-Maria Zangerl-Plessl, Sun-Joo Lee, Colin G Nichols

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Inwardly rectifying potassium (Kir) channels open at the 'helix bundle crossing' (HBC), formed by the M2 helices at the cytoplasmic end of the transmembrane pore. Introduced negative charges at the HBC (G178D) in Kir2.2 channels forces opening, allowing pore wetting and free movement of permeant ions between the cytoplasm and the inner cavity. Single-channel recordings reveal striking, pH-dependent, subconductance behaviors in G178D (or G178E and equivalent Kir2.1[G177E]) mutant channels, with well-resolved non-cooperative subconductance levels. Decreasing cytoplasmic pH shifts the probability towards lower conductance levels. Molecular dynamics simulations show how protonation of Kir2.2[G178D], or the D173 pore-lining residues, changes solvation, K

Commentary On Producing Environmental Information From Stakeholder Engagement, Josh Rosa Jul 2023

Commentary On Producing Environmental Information From Stakeholder Engagement, Josh Rosa

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This article provides practice-informed advice, guided by and responsive to theory, for policymakers who seek to improve their environmental policies by generating their own informational value from their interactions with stakeholders. First, the article explains a self-reinforcing opaqueness of conventional environmental policymaking and how this opaqueness disproportionately and cumulatively impacts underrepresented communities. Drawing from the literature of social ecology, political economy, and political methodology, the article adumbrates opaqueness’ contributions to environmental injustice and identifies potential benefits of a more informative approach to stakeholder engagement. Next, the article explains specific methods that policymakers can use to convert stakeholder input into greater …

Land Change Modeler For Evaluating Urbanization Driven By Universities In The Periurban Area Of Yogyakarta City, Indonesia, Sintha P.W. Gunawan, Takashi Machimura, Takanori Matsui Dr., Xiangyun Shi, Chihiro Haga Jul 2023

Land Change Modeler For Evaluating Urbanization Driven By Universities In The Periurban Area Of Yogyakarta City, Indonesia, Sintha P.W. Gunawan, Takashi Machimura, Takanori Matsui Dr., Xiangyun Shi, Chihiro Haga

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Yogyakarta City and its peri urban areas have experienced a rapid land cover change in the last two decades from non-urban to urban areas. Understanding the driving factors and their level of influence will facilitate well-informed decisions in planning sustainable urbanization. This study formulated a hypothesis that the area hosting a university is most likely to have higher urban area and urbanization rate and verified it by using a land change model (LCM). The LCM which implemented a multi-layer perceptron algorithm using LANDSAT 5 TM in 1999 and 2005 successfully produced a robust land change model with accuracy rate of …

Sustaining Urban Forests In Post-Industrial Cities: Place Attachment, Ecology, And Stewardship Potential, Paige S. Warren, Robert L. Ryan, Brenda K. Bushouse, Krista Harper, Kristina Stinson Jul 2023

Sustaining Urban Forests In Post-Industrial Cities: Place Attachment, Ecology, And Stewardship Potential, Paige S. Warren, Robert L. Ryan, Brenda K. Bushouse, Krista Harper, Kristina Stinson

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

People value urban green spaces for enjoying nature and socializing with friends, family, and other park users. However, overgrown urban forests without clear access points can be perceived as dark, dangerous, and wild places. As many cities experience reduced budgets, they struggle to maintain green spaces established in more prosperous times. We conducted a descriptive analysis of how constrained parks budgets and subsequent city decisions about maintenance are associated with patterns of forest use, place attachment, and social capital and their impacts on the potential for stewardship of forested parks. We selected Springfield, Massachusetts for our study because it is …

Relationship Between Pedestrian Activity And Avian Body Condition During Fall Migration, Laura Marsh, David A. Aborn Jul 2023

Relationship Between Pedestrian Activity And Avian Body Condition During Fall Migration, Laura Marsh, David A. Aborn

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Many North American landbirds undergo biannual migrations, which are energetically costly. Quality stopover sites are crucial to avian survival, as they provide opportunities to quickly replenish fat stores, rest, and avoid predation. One component of habitat quality that is often overlooked is the level of pedestrian activity, which birds may interpret as a predatory threat. If intrusion levels are high, birds will flush repeatedly and may not adequately restore energy reserves, which hinders successful migration. We compared body mass index between birds at different intrusion levels, testing the hypothesis that birds near continuous intrusion will be in poorer condition. Results …

Fifteen Years Of Fragmentation And Land Cover Change In India’S Ten Largest Cities – A Google Earth Engine Analysis, Shivani Agarwal, Preeti Rao, Harini Nagendra Jul 2023

Fifteen Years Of Fragmentation And Land Cover Change In India’S Ten Largest Cities – A Google Earth Engine Analysis, Shivani Agarwal, Preeti Rao, Harini Nagendra

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Urbanization is one of the most transformative drivers of global environmental change today, with India representing one of the fastest urbanizing countries. We map the urban expansion of India’s ten largest cities from 2001 to 2016, through a regression tree classification of Landsat data in Google Earth Engine. Indian cities are growing through sprawl, and simultaneously densifying through in-filling. In Delhi, Mumbai and Pune, urban growth is multinucleated, aggregating to form a larger urban region. However, the dominant pattern in most cities is mono-nucleated growth via edge-expansion. The colonial signature is visible in many cities such as Bangalore, where due …

Community Garden As A Context For Civic Ecology: A Multidisciplinary Project In Restoration And Environmental Education, Mary Leou, Tania Goicoechea, Bethany Kogut

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This paper describes a civic ecology program called Bees Alive! developed by the NYU Wallerstein Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education & Sustainability over three years to establish a native plant pollinator garden in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York. The project brought together a large university, public schools, non-profit organizations and a community garden called Lentol Garden to support wildlife and create an outdoor classroom to educate the public about the importance of pollinators. The garden was utilized as a context for civic ecology, environmental education and stewardship. Theories of place-based education and experiential learning were incorporated in designing this long-term project …

Judge Paul J. Mccormick: The Prelude To Desegregation In The United States, Jose Luis Castro Padilla Jul 2023

Judge Paul J. Mccormick: The Prelude To Desegregation In The United States, Jose Luis Castro Padilla

History in the Making

Born into a Catholic family on April 23, 1879, in New York City, Paul J. McCormick became one of Los Angeles, California’s most important federal judges. On March 21, 1946, Judge McCormick’s judgment in favor of the Mendez v. Westminster case declared California schools must desegregate. Until that time, school segregation had relied on the 1896 court case, Plessy v. Ferguson, which justified it under racial segregation. McCormick’s singular decision marked a watershed in the fight for civil rights in the United States. While Judge McCormick promoted justice, equality, and civil rights, his court decision desegregating schools on behalf of …

Reproductive Justice And The Black Panther Party, Dakota Mancuso Jul 2023

Reproductive Justice And The Black Panther Party, Dakota Mancuso

History in the Making

Despite the multitude of research available on the Black Panther Party (BPP), the group’s widespread social activism programs and their positive effect on the health of communities, is generally understated. These programs, known by the party as “survival programs,” provided a plethora of services meant to increase the standards of living of underserved people, all at no cost. Such programs included a series of People’s Free Medical Clinics, Free Breakfast for Children programs, and several Liberation Schools, including the widely successful Oakland Community School. When looking at these programs within the context of reproductive justice, or the framework of study …

Student And Youth Sandinistas In Nicaragua, 1979-2018, Viviana Alvarez Rodriguez Jul 2023

Student And Youth Sandinistas In Nicaragua, 1979-2018, Viviana Alvarez Rodriguez

History in the Making

In June 1979, Sandinista forces in Nicaragua successfully overthrew a decades-long multi-generational United States-backed military dictatorship. The vanguard, a diverse coalition of secondary and university students, youth, clergy, and peasants, defeated the highly-trained Guardia Nacional (National Guard) and ended the authoritarian Somoza regime. This paper examines how Carlos Fonseca and other Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) leaders resisted the liberal reformist model inherited by student-youth of the late 1960s to demand a more radical political platform. By bringing a relatively isolated student movement into the masses, this paper seeks to understand how a privileged class of university students became …

The San Bernardino Daily Sun And Local Reporting Of The Great War, Jeff Leblanc

History in the Making

The scope and ferocity of World War I (1914-1918) shocked the world. It was the first conflict that was reported to the public in near real-time, engrossing people around the world. This paper analyzes the reporting on World War I by a regional American newspaper in Southern California, from America’s initial debate about entering the war in early 1917 until the end of hostilities in 1918. This paper makes use of the newspaper articles printed by the San Bernardino Daily Sun to analyze and evaluate the substantive content and underlying purpose of news stories published by the Daily Sun during …

Seeking Social Justice In The City Of Los Angeles: Mary Julia Workman, Jose Luis Castro Padilla Jul 2023

Seeking Social Justice In The City Of Los Angeles: Mary Julia Workman, Jose Luis Castro Padilla

History in the Making

Mary Julia Workman (1871–1964) was a Catholic social activist in the early twentieth century. She was the founder of the Brownson Settlement House in Los Angeles established in 1902. By the twentieth century, during the Progressive Era (1896–1916), Workman led a group of volunteer women to help immigrants, the majority being Mexicans, who were segregated and discriminated against in the growing city of Los Angeles, California. Although Catholic activism was influenced by the Protestant Progressive ideology, Workman provided social justice to the marginalized communities with education, health, and job training. In a time when Americanization efforts imposed by conservative and …

The Double-Edged Sword: Examining The Contradictory Nature Of Savak And The U.S.-Iran Cliency Relationship, Braedon Mcghee Jul 2023

The Double-Edged Sword: Examining The Contradictory Nature Of Savak And The U.S.-Iran Cliency Relationship, Braedon Mcghee

History in the Making

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 marked the end of the diplomatic relationship between Iran and the United States. This relationship, cultivated by the United States throughout the Cold War, served the interests of the United States’ hegemonic quest to contain communism while also appealing to the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s political goals. This paper analyzes the complex and contradictory nature of the U.S.-Iran relationship during the reign of the Shah, specifically focusing on the role of the Shah’s brutal secret police force Sâzemân-e Ettelâ’ât va Amniat-e Kešvar (SAVAK), created, directed, and funded by the United States to consolidate …

Mixing: A History Of Anti-Miscegenation Laws In The United States, Nyla Provost Jul 2023

Mixing: A History Of Anti-Miscegenation Laws In The United States, Nyla Provost

History in the Making

For over a century, many Americans believed that interracial marriage was unnatural. From the late 1860s through the late 1960s, the American legal system supported the belief that interracial marriages were illegitimate. In this paper, I examine how anti-miscegenation laws promoted and sustained white supremacy, socioeconomic position, and racial caste using antimiscegenation literature, legislation, and court cases. This study is significant because it examines the impact that anti-miscegenation laws had on the United States’ racial caste system and the American justice system.
