The Α-Discounting (Α-Dmcdm) As An Extension Of Ahp, Topsis, Vikor, Promethee, And Weighted Sum, Florentin Smarandache Apr 2026

The Α-Discounting (Α-Dmcdm) As An Extension Of Ahp, Topsis, Vikor, Promethee, And Weighted Sum, Florentin Smarandache

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

This paper presents a comprehensive study of the α-Discounting Multi-Criteria Decision Making (α-D MCDM) method, an extension of the classical Multi-Criteria Decision Making framework designed to address inconsistencies and complex preference structures in decision analysis. Traditional methods such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and related MCDM techniques perform effectively when decision makers provide consistent pairwise comparisons; however, real-world decision problems frequently involve inconsistent, n-wise, interval-valued, or non-linear preference relations that exceed the capabilities of classical approaches. The proposed α-D MCDM method introduces a global discounting parameter α, which transforms inconsistent systems of preference equations into solvable algebraic models while …

Reassessing Additive Diversity Measures: Dawson's Negro Folk Symphony In A Brass Audition Context, Daniel Combs Jr. Apr 2026

Reassessing Additive Diversity Measures: Dawson's Negro Folk Symphony In A Brass Audition Context, Daniel Combs Jr.

Student Publications and Presentations

There is a notable gap in representation of American composers—especially historically underrepresented African American composers—on most symphonic brass audition lists used today. Audition repertoire shapes what orchestral musicians study, and educational institutions also prioritize a nearly exclusively Eurocentric canon to produce audition-ready musicians. As a result, engagement with Black American composers in symphonic culture remains limited. Recent scholarship by Brandon Farnsworth suggests that one commonly used method of addressing this issue—including a requirement that auditionees find and include works by underrepresented composers—further masks structural inequity rather than changing it. In this context, William Dawson’s Negro Folk Symphony (1934, rev. 1952) …

This study is a structured, qualitative literature review of current AI research for the future of human space exploration. It uses publicly available peer‑reviewed journal articles and NASA/ESA technical reports on AI for Mars missions. Using Perplexity, the researcher first prompted the AI tool to identify recurring topics across these sources and generate themes. The researcher independently reviewed all sources to confirm and refine those themes. Three themes—mission autonomy, local resource utilization and life‑support, …

From Plastics To Pathways: Phthalates, Oxidative Stress, And Nervous System Function In Planaria, Destiny M. Perez, Cassandra S. Korte Apr 2026

From Plastics To Pathways: Phthalates, Oxidative Stress, And Nervous System Function In Planaria, Destiny M. Perez, Cassandra S. Korte

Student Publications and Presentations

Phthalates are widely used chemicals added to plastics to increase flexibility and durability. Because they are not chemically bound to products, they can leach into the environment and contribute to human exposure through food packaging, plastic containers, and hygiene products such as lotions, shampoos, and fragrances. This widespread exposure has raised public health concerns because many phthalates are linked to endocrine disruption and have been associated with reproduction, developmental, metabolic, and neurological disruption. To investigate how phthalates may impact nervous system function, planarian flatworms will be used as a toxicology model. Planaria will be exposed to phthalates and then tested …

Digital Marketplaces As Conditional Economic Infrastructure In Conflict-Affected Economies, Diana Umerova Apr 2026

Digital Marketplaces As Conditional Economic Infrastructure In Conflict-Affected Economies, Diana Umerova

Student Publications and Presentations

Armed conflict disrupts trade, logistics, and financial institutions, constraining firms’ ability to participate in domestic and international markets. While prior research documents macroeconomic losses and supply-chain shocks, there is limited explanatory analysis of how digital marketplaces operate as conditional economic infrastructure under active conflict. Using the Russia–Ukraine war as a contextual case, this thesis extends a qualitative, secondary-data analysis to explain how digital marketplaces function through the economic mechanisms of alternative market access, organizational reconfiguration, and digital payment facilitation, while acknowledging structural constraints, elevated transaction costs, and platform governance risks. Building on existing research, the study argues that digital marketplaces …

Circadian Genes In Fruit Flies: What They Teach Us About Human Sleep And Health, Laney Wilson, Mia Gonzalez, Kimberly Rowland Apr 2026

Circadian Genes In Fruit Flies: What They Teach Us About Human Sleep And Health, Laney Wilson, Mia Gonzalez, Kimberly Rowland

Student Publications and Presentations

Circadian rhythms are cycles developed internally that influence the behavioral and physiological changes that happen daily. They occur in organisms as diverse as humans and fruit flies. They are the product of “clock” genes that set the rhythm and tune them in response to changes in the ambient light. In the present study, we aimed to determine the contribution of functional clock genes to the circadian regulation of movement of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. An equal number of wild-type flies (n = 5) and clock-mutant flies (n = 5) were placed in an incubator for 1 week to allow …

The Opioid Crisis In The United States Vs. Portugal’S Public Health Approach, Ciara Dillon Apr 2026

The Opioid Crisis In The United States Vs. Portugal’S Public Health Approach, Ciara Dillon

Student Publications and Presentations

The opioid epidemic in the United States is a persistent public health issue exacerbated by increasingly dangerous and potent synthetic opioids. Although there are growing levels of access to naloxone and medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as well as growing numbers of overdose-related deaths, these data indicate that U.S. drug policy continues to be characterized by a primarily reactive and partially punitive framework. This study will compare the U.S. drug policy model to that of Portugal, which fully decriminalized all illicit drugs in 2001, shifting from a national drug policy based on punishment and repression to one focused on preventing the consumption …

An Analysis Of Surface-Level Macro And Microplastics Along Western Central Leyte, Philippines, Graham B. Morrison-Plumley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

With the pervasive use of plastics worldwide, their environmental effects can reach even the most remote ecosystems. This study examines both macro and microplastic pollution in the Greater Baybay region in western Leyte, Philippines. Samples from 10 separate sites within Baybay and its adjacent communities represent the unique environmental and geologic diversity of the central Visayan region of the Philippines. At each of the 10 sampling sites, 3 excavations were conducted, yielding 30 samples. Macroplastics were collected in the field, immediately around microplastic digs. Microplastic samples were analyzed in Florida Atlantic University’s Environmental Change Lab. It was determined that spatial …

Human heart development depends on tightly coordinated genetic programs and biomechanical cues, yet the underlying cell-microenvironment interactions remain poorly understood because the developing heart is difficult to study in utero and accurate experimental models are lacking. Recent advances in stem cell biology and three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting now allow the construction of human tissue analogues with defined structure and function. Here we show a perfusable 3D bioprinted model of the human embryonic heart tube composed of layered myocardium, cardiac jelly, and endocardium. Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and endothelial cells are cultured under controlled flow conditions, producing constructs with high …

‘Mobile Consumers’: Interpreting The Consumption Perceptions, Practices And Experiences Of Mobile Brazilian International Students In London, Mark Holton, Leonardo Santana Dos Santos Rodrigues

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper advances existing work on the mobilities and geographies of students by examining the complexities and contestations affecting international students' consumption perceptions and experiences. This is important in positing new ways of understanding how educational mobilities, in both their meta and micro forms, can influence, and be influenced by, consumption practices and ideologies. Drawing on a set of semi-structured interviews with Brazilian international students living and studying in London, UK this paper draws together mobilities and consumption theories as a lens for interpreting consumption knowledge and practice as an evolving and iterative set of performances that align closely with …

“Tolling For The Outcast”: A Therapeutic Jurisprudence Consideration Of The Relationship Between The Americans With Disabilities Act, Death Row Conditions, And Capital Punishment, Michael L. Perlin, Esq., Talia Roitberg Harmon, Maren Geiger, Chelsea Henning Apr 2026

“Tolling For The Outcast”: A Therapeutic Jurisprudence Consideration Of The Relationship Between The Americans With Disabilities Act, Death Row Conditions, And Capital Punishment, Michael L. Perlin, Esq., Talia Roitberg Harmon, Maren Geiger, Chelsea Henning

San Diego Law Review

The press has regularly reported on the level of abysmal conditions on death rows in those states that have retained capital punishment. Death-row prisoners are often incarcerated in solitary confinement, and are subject to much more deprivation and harsher conditions than other prisoners. As a result, many experience declining mental health, and it has become clear that persons with mental illness are disproportionately put to death. Some litigants have turned to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as a potential source of relief; the Supreme Court’s decision in Pennsylvania Department of Corrections v. Yeskey underscored that the act’s language “unmistakably …

Sex-Aware Genome-Wide Assessment Of De Novo Variants In Autism Across Coding And Noncoding Regions, Tychele N Turner Apr 2026

Sex-Aware Genome-Wide Assessment Of De Novo Variants In Autism Across Coding And Noncoding Regions, Tychele N Turner

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) shows a consistent sex bias, yet how sex shapes de novo variant (DNV) risk across coding and noncoding sequence remains unclear. I analyzed DNVs in > 41,000 parent–child sequenced trios from three ASD family-based cohorts and compared DNV characteristics and enrichment patterns in males and females. Notably, these trios included individuals with ASD as well as those without ASD. I developed a new sex-aware DNV caller (HAT-FLEX) and thoroughly evaluated each candidate DNV using an additional tool introduced in this study, SNOW, to generate a high-confidence callset. RESULTS: I identified enrichment of missense and loss-of-function (LOF) …

Brass Routes: Merging Performance, Pedagogy, And Entrepreneurship In The Creation Of Community-Based Brass Band Programs, Dylan Mashburn Apr 2026

Brass Routes: Merging Performance, Pedagogy, And Entrepreneurship In The Creation Of Community-Based Brass Band Programs, Dylan Mashburn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines the development, implementation, and evaluation of Brass Routes, a curriculum-based model and set of instructional tools designed to help existing secondary school band programs implement New Orleans-style brass band ensembles within their current schedules, personnel, and resources. As many schools face declining arts funding and increasingly standardized ensemble models, traditional band structures often fail to engage all students or reflect diverse musical identities. Brass Routes proposes an alternative ensemble model that integrates performance, pedagogy, and entrepreneurship to foster student engagement, leadership, and sustainability in school music programs. Grounded in culturally responsive pedagogy, informal learning practices, and community …

The Role Of Cannabinoid Receptors In Punishment-Driven Risky Decision Making, Sharoderick C. Lowe Apr 2026

The Role Of Cannabinoid Receptors In Punishment-Driven Risky Decision Making, Sharoderick C. Lowe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Risky decision-making is a feature of mental health disorders such as substance use disorder and schizophrenia and is often linked to alterations in the brain’s cannabinoid system. However, how cannabinoid signaling regulates punishment-based risky decision-making remains unclear. To address this question, we assessed the effects of multiple cannabinoid drugs on risky decision-making in male and female Long-Evans rats using the Risky Decision-Making Task (RDT). Following training, rats received varying doses of Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC; CB1/CB2 receptor partial agonist), ACEA (CB1 receptor agonist), Rimonabant (CB1 receptor inverse agonist), and AA-5-HT (FAAH inhibitor that increases endocannabinoid tone). THC did not alter risky choice …

Regulating Retirement Savings Roulette: A Framework For Evaluating Prudence Of Cryptocurrency Investments In 401(K)S, Lauren K. Valastro Apr 2026

Regulating Retirement Savings Roulette: A Framework For Evaluating Prudence Of Cryptocurrency Investments In 401(K)S, Lauren K. Valastro

San Diego Law Review

Foolhardy or farsighted, Americans are investing their retirement savings in volatile cryptocurrencies.  These investments, conducted largely through brokerage windows enabling plan participants to invest in options not on their employer-sponsored retirement plan menu, are increasing.  Clarity on whether and to what extent fiduciary duties apply to self-directed brokerage windows in 401(k)s is needed to protect Americans’ retirement outlooks and to equip fiduciaries with enough information to fulfil their obligations.  No agency or court has confirmed the existence of fiduciary duties relating to brokerage windows, let alone defined the contours of any such duty.  The Department of Labor (DOL) recently withdrew …

Thou Shall Not Compel Speech: Public Educators’ Free Speech Rights In The Face Of Louisiana’S “Ten Commandments” Law And Other Rules Compelling Private Expression From Public School Teachers, Kailey A. Olsson Apr 2026

Thou Shall Not Compel Speech: Public Educators’ Free Speech Rights In The Face Of Louisiana’S “Ten Commandments” Law And Other Rules Compelling Private Expression From Public School Teachers, Kailey A. Olsson

San Diego Law Review

First Amendment jurisprudence has significantly evolved within the past decade as the Supreme Court has expanded religious protections, further developed the Compelled-Speech Doctrine, and narrowed what public school activities are considered violations of the Establishment Clause.  There is no other U.S. Supreme Court case that illustrates these monumental shifts in First Amendment interpretation quite like Kennedy v. Bremerton School District.  Writing for the majority, Justice Gorsuch found that a public school district could not suppress the personal religious expression of a football coach, even when that coach led a prayer activity with other football players and within view of other …

Long Overdue: Modernizing Virtual Currency Taxation, Matthew Tarasen Apr 2026

Long Overdue: Modernizing Virtual Currency Taxation, Matthew Tarasen

San Diego Law Review

In March of 2014, the IRS issued guidance classifying cryptocurrency as property for most tax purposes, at a time when the total cryptocurrency market capitalization was roughly 6.5 billion dollars.  Over ten years later, that figure has grown to four trillion dollars.  While taxpayers can now purchase coffee at Starbucks with certain cryptocurrencies, such purchases trigger capital gains reporting, treating the transaction effectively as a taxable disposition of property, despite its economic function as a medium of exchange.  Although cryptocurrencies have gained prevalence in commerce and have even been briefly recognized as legal tender in some foreign jurisdictions, the IRS’s …

Investigating The Synergistic Effects Of Mental And Physical Exhaustion On Learning And Attention In Emergency First Responders: An Eye-Tracking Study, Kayla Page

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT

Exhaustion is known to impair cognitive functioning and performance, yet its effects on learning during video-based instruction among first responders and military service members remain underexplored. This study examined how mental, physical, and combined exhaustion independently influence learning outcomes and visual attention in a physically active sample drawn from military, public safety, and emergency service roles. Visual attention was measured utilizing eye tracking, focusing on fixation duration (FD) and fixation rate (FR). Participants completed instructional tasks under each exhaustion condition, allowing comparison of learning and gaze behavior across fatigue states. Results indicated that mental and physical exhaustion were associated …

Pediatric Thyroid Cancer Lung Metastases And Rai: Long-Term Results, Ryan C Mueller, Nikhil Rammohan, Anthony J Apicelli, Ana Maria Arbelaez, Farrokh Dehdashti, Barry A Siegel, Vikas Prasad, Perry W Grigsby, Stephanie Markovina

2020-Current year OA Pubs

OBJECTIVES: Children with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) often present with lung metastases but historically have good outcomes. Radioactive iodine (RAI) is commonly used to treat these children. Given the rarity of this condition, little evidence detailing long-term outcomes and risk of radiation pneumonitis exists.

METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients < 20 years old who received RAI for DTC lung metastases between 1973 and 2018. Disease-free survival (DFS) was calculated from diagnosis to last follow-up. Overall survival and rates of acute and late radiation pneumonitis were determined by chart review and obituary searches.

RESULTS: Sixteen patients met eligibility criteria. Fourteen presented with thyroid, nodal, and lung disease; one presented with thyroid and nodal disease with nodal and lung recurrence; and one presented with thyroid-only disease with nodal and lung recurrence. All patients underwent thyroidectomy, 10 underwent neck dissection, and four underwent …

Black Panther Woman: The Political And Spiritual Life Of Ericka Huggins, Stacey C. Ault, Susan Roberta Katz

International Journal of Human Rights Education

As human rights educators from different generations and racial identities, we wanted to read and review Black Panther Woman about Ericka Huggins for different but equally powerful personal reasons. For Stacey, her best friend, Dr. Linda Garrett, was a Black Panther scholar, making her, as a Black  woman, interested in learning more about Ericka as a mother, comrade, and activist. For Susan, Ericka’s case in the 1970s profoundly impacted her political consciousness as a White college student and motivated her commitment to social justice activism. For all readers of the International Journal of Human Rights Education, we strongly recommend this …
