German Is For You! The Making Of A High School Multikulti German Course, Jennene Aten

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This teacher self-study examined the process of creating and teaching a multicultural German curriculum. This study necessarily involved observing students as they went through the semester of course work, but students are not the center of the research. I am. This research focuses on what I learned about teaching, specifically my teaching in my subject area and how I could improve my skills and methods.

Germany is an ethnically diverse nation but not usually thought of as such. The presentation of Germany in German language textbooks is generally portrayed as rather monochromatic. Students who study German, specifically in Fairfield, California, …

Improving Drought Science Communication And Accessibility, Lindsay Erin Johnson Apr 2026

Improving Drought Science Communication And Accessibility, Lindsay Erin Johnson

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation examines drought communication through the lens of science communication, with a focus on improving readability, accessibility, understandability, and usability of drought information. Using a manuscript-style format, three studies investigate how drought information is written, delivered, and applied. Chapter 1 provides a brief overview and outline of this dissertation. Chapter 2 evaluates the readability of the U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) national narratives over almost 8 years. Results show that these narratives are consistently written …

Making The Case For Spandex: The Nature Of Re-Novicing And The Merging Of Expertise For Former Elementary And High School Teachers Who Move To Teaching At The Middle Level, Elizabeth K. Boyle Apr 2026

Making The Case For Spandex: The Nature Of Re-Novicing And The Merging Of Expertise For Former Elementary And High School Teachers Who Move To Teaching At The Middle Level, Elizabeth K. Boyle

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

As an academic coach in a large, Midwestern middle school, I noticed an influx of teachers with years of prior experience at the elementary or high school levels being hired to work with students in grades six through eight. Because they were already veteran teachers, they were not assigned mentorship, yet there were aspects of working in a middle-school setting that effectively “re-noviced” them (Hanuscin et al., 2020).

Knowing that cookie-cutter approaches to professional development and learning often do not meet the needs of adult learners, I sought information that would guide what professional growth opportunities could be provided to …

No Ash Will Burn follows twin narrators Avery and Krista Harmon. After a boy their aged, named Oliver O’Hara, moves in next door, Avie begins playing music with him at the docks in their town. When their mother unexpectedly passes away, Avery leaves their small town of Monticello, Kentucky for Lexington, Kentucky, taking Krista’s dulcimer along with her. The dulcimer was built by their late father, who intended to build two, but passed away before he could complete the second, dedicated to Avery. The completed dulcimer has Krista’s name carved into the side. In Lexington, Oliver develops an original song, …

Laser Microprocessing Of Metallic And Composite Materials: Nanosecond Pulsed Laser Surface Melting, Laser Shock Peening, And Femtosecond Laser Machining, Qiuchi Zhu

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This dissertation comprises three parts addressing laser microprocessing of metallic and composite materials through nanosecond pulsed laser surface melting, laser shock peening, and femtosecond laser machining. The first part discusses nanosecond pulsed laser surface melting for corrosion mitigation in stainless steel. Commercial 304 stainless steel (SS) was first used to establish a processing window for stable shallow remelting and rapid resolidification. The approach was then extended to 304L/308L SS welded joints relevant to nuclear dry storage canisters. The results show that nanosecond laser surface melting refines the near-surface microstructures in the heat-affected zone and improved pitting corrosion resistance. Electrochemical and …

Leading With The Heart: Fostering Asset-Based Teacher Beliefs And Practices For Multilingual Learners Through Research–Practice Partnership In A Diversifying Suburban Elementary School, Valerie Anne Kyllmann

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

This mixed methods study is part of a larger research-practice partnership (RPP) between practitioners and researchers at a Midwestern suburban elementary school experiencing an increase in cultural and linguistic diversity. Like many U.S. schools, its teaching force is mostly White, middle-class, and female, creating not only a pedagogical gap, but also a belief gap about the linguistic and academic assets multilingual students possess. Grounded in linguistically responsive teaching, adult learning, and improvement science, this study explores how RPPs can leverage varying expertise in cycles of inquiry to co-create initiatives that foster asset-based teacher perspectives through building-wide events and professional development. …

Reliability And Validation Of A Game-Based Assessment Of Upper Limb Movement In Children With Unilateral Cerebral Palsy, Rachel Scheele

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) is a pediatric movement disorder characterized by motor impairment primarily affecting one side of the body. Clinical assessments of upper limb function are widely used but often lack precision and may be influenced by clinician subjectivity, thus creating a need for objective, reliable, and valid forms of assessment. Mobile health (mHealth) has shown promise in rehabilitation settings, due to its accessibility and user-friendly design. However, validity and reliability of these assessment tools remain largely unknown. MoEvGame was developed to evaluate upper limb motor function. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of MoEvGame in children age …

Developing A Framework To Improve Phishing Response After Detection, Kevin Umba Apr 2026

Developing A Framework To Improve Phishing Response After Detection, Kevin Umba

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Phishing belongs to the most prevalent attack vectors in the cybersecurity industry. Academia, industry, and government resources offer a wealth of information on the subject. However, insights on phishing techniques and remediations are scattered across those sources. Most governmental and academic literature focuses on user awareness, policy guidelines, or phishing training. This leaves the security practitioners underserved. Furthermore, actionable information for security operations is often unstructured or vendor-specific. The goal of the thesis is to provide a preliminary framework to guide security professionals through indicators of compromise and remediation, using a vendor-neutral approach.

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) has remarkably increased in the past few years as they have demonstrated significant reduction in A1c and major cardiovascular outcomes and have led to weight loss with low risk of hypoglycemia. GLP-1 RA use has raised concerns about potential associations with increased gastric retention and adverse outcomes in upper endoscopy procedures.

METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search across multiple databases to identify comparative studies evaluating the impact of GLP-1 RA exposure versus non-exposure on upper endoscopy outcomes. Studies comparing GLP-1 RAs to other medications were excluded. The primary outcome was …

Writing As A Process Of Inquiry In Autoethnography For Meaning-Making: Reflections And Some Points For Consideration, Niroj Dahal Apr 2026

Writing As A Process Of Inquiry In Autoethnography For Meaning-Making: Reflections And Some Points For Consideration, Niroj Dahal

The Qualitative Report

This article explores writing as a process of inquiry and meaning-making in the autoethnographic tradition, offering reflections on the recursive, emergent, and dialogical/dialectical nature of writing, along with some points for consideration. Drawing on perspectives from qualitative research and narrative inquiry (Riessman, 2008), I argue that autoethnographic writing serves as a method of inquiry and/or discovery, generating ontological, epistemological, and axiological-driven cultural meaning that functions as a site of reflection, interrogation, and re-storying of lived experiences. This recursive, often messy, and reflexive act allows researchers to excavate, analyze, and interpret their lived experiences. Rather than viewing writing as a final-stage …

A Rigorous And Ethical Methodological Framework For Navigating Cultural Differences With Police Officers In A South African Rural Community, Masefako Andronica Gumani Apr 2026

A Rigorous And Ethical Methodological Framework For Navigating Cultural Differences With Police Officers In A South African Rural Community, Masefako Andronica Gumani

The Qualitative Report

Research contexts pose different challenges during research processes, and these challenges may affect the credibility of study findings. This was especially the case when, as a researcher, I interacted with police participants from different cultural backgrounds from my own. This paper reflects on my experience as a female Sepedi‑speaking researcher conducting a Ph.D. qualitative, grounded theory study with male and female South African Police Service (SAPS) officers from the Venda and Tsonga cultural backgrounds. I used a reflexive autoethnographic research design to purposively look at myself as the subject of inquiry and analyze my reflexive journal using reflexive thematic data …

Testimonios De Una Estudiante De Doctorado: Regaining Joy In Graduate School Through Research-Practice Partnerships, Sophia Piral Lee Apr 2026

Testimonios De Una Estudiante De Doctorado: Regaining Joy In Graduate School Through Research-Practice Partnerships, Sophia Piral Lee

The Qualitative Report

Through an epistolary critical autoethnography and Latina and Chicana feminist framework, I explore the question of how international graduate students of color can overcome cultural, linguistic, ethnoracial, and social class isolation on predominantly white campuses and in college towns. By writing a letter to my mother (one of my methods for survival in academia), I share my challenges as a Guatemalan, first-time mom, first-generation college student, international student, and non-English native speaker in graduate school during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, this writing helps me recognize how I overcame my isolation and regained my joy and …

Healthcare Institutions’ Influences On Health Literacy Levels In Mothers In Greensboro, North Carolina, Wole Ajala Apr 2026

Healthcare Institutions’ Influences On Health Literacy Levels In Mothers In Greensboro, North Carolina, Wole Ajala

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Immigrant populations experience persistent challenges within the U.S. healthcare system, including marginalization, discrimination, and limited access to understandable health information, which contribute to health disparities. Factors such as low income, cultural differences, and intersecting identities related to gender and race further compound these challenges. This qualitative phenomenological study examined how these social determinants of health influenced the health literacy experiences of African immigrant mothers in Greensboro, North Carolina. Data were collected through encrypted WhatsApp audio interviews with eight African immigrant mothers who had used healthcare services in the United States. Interview recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using inductive thematic …

Strategies To Reduce Diagnostic Wait Times In Vha Facilities, Frankie Loadz Odlens Beaubrun Apr 2026

Strategies To Reduce Diagnostic Wait Times In Vha Facilities, Frankie Loadz Odlens Beaubrun

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the largest integrated healthcare system in the United States, providing care to millions of veterans annually. Diagnostic service wait times affect veteran access to timely diagnoses and subsequent eligibility for disability benefits, vocational rehabilitation, and social services. The purpose of this integrative review was to identify evidence-based strategies to reduce diagnostic wait time within the VHA. The guiding review question addressed what strategies VA medical centers can use to reduce diagnostic wait times. Guided by Donabedian’s structure-process-outcome framework, a comprehensive literature search initially identified 487 sources across multiple databases. Subsequently, systematic screening and application …

Bound By Belief: Exploring The Influence Of Internalized Rape Myths On Survivor Agency And Identity, Arika I. White Apr 2026

Bound By Belief: Exploring The Influence Of Internalized Rape Myths On Survivor Agency And Identity, Arika I. White

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This qualitative study explored how internalized RMA impacts survivors’ cognitive processing, coping strategies, and psychological agency, as observed by licensed psychotherapists who treat sexual assault survivors. Despite extensive literature on the societal impacts of RMA, less attention has been given to understanding how these cultural myths are internalized by survivors and manifest intrapsychically, influencing self-perception, self-blame, and identity reconstruction following trauma. Using a phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews with therapists provided meta-level insights into how survivors’ narratives reflect internalized cultural stigma and misogynistic beliefs. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns of maladaptive coping, internalized misogyny, and diminished agency, revealing how …

Power Fuzzy Clustering: Flexible Distance Metrics And Inclusion Of Covariates, Phuc T. Nguyen, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo Apr 2026

Power Fuzzy Clustering: Flexible Distance Metrics And Inclusion Of Covariates, Phuc T. Nguyen, Cristina Tortora, Antonio Punzo

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Clustering is a fundamental task in statistics and machine learning aimed at identifying homogeneous groups within data. Among the available approaches, fuzzy clustering (FC) is particularly suited to poorly separated boundaries, as it allows partial memberships and captures uncertainty and overlapping structures. We introduce power fuzzy clustering (PFC), a general framework that unifies several FC methods, including fuzzy K-means and probabilistic distance clustering. By complementing the classical fuzzifier with a power parameter on distances, PFC enhances model flexibility while retaining interpretability. To accommodate clusters with different shapes and scales, we incorporate a volume parameter and alternative distance metrics (e.g., Mahalanobis …

Service Providers’ Perceptions Of Mckinney-Vento Implementation: Supporting Academic Performance And Attendance In K-12 Students’ Experiencing Homelessness, Darci Mcrae Apr 2026

Service Providers’ Perceptions Of Mckinney-Vento Implementation: Supporting Academic Performance And Attendance In K-12 Students’ Experiencing Homelessness, Darci Mcrae

Honors Projects

In Wood, Lucas, and Ottawa County, Ohio, approximately 2,508 students or 2.6% of total enrollment experience homelessness. The McKinney-Vento Act (MVA, 1987) aims to reduce educational barriers for these students by ensuring access to transportation, school enrollment, school supplies, and additional educational support. Despite these provisions, the effectiveness of MVA implementation varies among school districts due to differences in staff training, funding, procedures, and the diverse needs of students experiencing homelessness. This study examines service providers’ perceptions of how the MVA is implemented in public school districts and how it affects attendance and academic performance among K–12 students’ experiencing homelessness. …

Quantifying Overconsumption In The United States: A Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, Morgan Davis Apr 2026

Quantifying Overconsumption In The United States: A Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, Morgan Davis

Honors Projects

This study examines overconsumption in the United States by analyzing how socioeconomic factors influence household spending relative to income. Overconsumption is defined as elevated discretionary spending relative to income, with a focus on categories such as apparel, entertainment, and food away from home. Using 2024 Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) data, three multiple linear regression models were created to evaluate predictors of overall consumption, discretionary consumption, and apparel spending as proportions of income.

Results show that income is the most significant predictor across all models, with higher-income households consistently spending a smaller share of their income. Age and household size also …

Barriers Asian Adoptees Face In Screening For Inheritable Conditions Due To A Lack Of Family Medical History, Anna Shea Apr 2026

Barriers Asian Adoptees Face In Screening For Inheritable Conditions Due To A Lack Of Family Medical History, Anna Shea

Honors Projects

Adoption has been increasingly common in the United States, with more than 7.8 million people in the United States adopted (Wexler et al., 2025) and over 280,000 children in the United States adopted internationally (Orr et al., 2024). Despite this, those who are adopted, especially internationally, often face medical disadvantages compared to those biologically related to their family. The differences in treatment between adoptees and those who are biologically related are largely due to the knowledge, or lack of knowledge, of the individual’s family medical history and genetic information. Genetic or inherited disease screening is often only completed or covered …
