Beyond Beneficial Margins: Four Mechanisms Linking Border Vegetation To Pest Dynamics, Jorge F. M. Cardoso, Fabiane M. Mundim
Beyond Beneficial Margins: Four Mechanisms Linking Border Vegetation To Pest Dynamics, Jorge F. M. Cardoso, Fabiane M. Mundim
Biology Student Research
Vegetated field borders are widely promoted as tools to enhance biodiversity and strengthen biological control in agroecosystems. However, their role in pest dynamics remains conceptually fragmented and empirically inconsistent. Here, we develop a unified framework explaining how crop border vegetation influences pest populations through four interlinked ecological mechanisms. First, borders act as host reservoirs and selective filters, providing alternative hosts and overwintering habitat that enhance pest persistence across crop cycles. Second, borders modify pest colonization dynamics by shaping movement, aggregation, and host-location behavior at crop edges. Third, borders restructure multitrophic networks, simultaneously supporting natural enemies, alternative prey, vectors, and pathogens, …

Ai Mistakes: "Confabulation" And Abduction, Not "Hallucination", Stephen M. Mcjohn, Ian Mcjohn
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
"Hallucination" has become the common term for errors by AI systems, yet it implies a misleading analogy to human perception. LLM's process tokens. They do not have conscious experience or conscious perception. A hallucination is an experience, and (to our knowledge, to date) LLM's do not experience anything. This paper suggests that legal scholars follow the lead of a small number of AI researchers who have suggested that "confabulation" is a more accurate term, a metaphor grounded in psychology. People confabulate when they unknowingly invent spurious explanations or facts. We then take this terminological question and stretch it into a …

Separate But Equally Funded: Reforming Education Savings Accounts For Homeschoolers, Matthew Mcguire
Senior Honors Theses
Public commodities require public access. I review twenty-one state-funded education savings accounts (ESAs) funded by general fund revenues to argue that limiting home-education access violates principles of public access—The General Availability Doctrine. To the dismay of many home-educated students, nine state-funded ESAs require parents to terminate their home-education status as a condition for public funds. At least five state-funded ESAs require public school attendance as a prerequisite to receive funds, thereby precluding homeschooling students. Three state-funded ESAs treat home-education negatively by reducing funding based on a student's home-education status. The discriminatory treatment of home-educated parents and students raises First and …

This study employs the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) to identify the critical factors and their degree of relevance to the vehicle emission process. Its innovation lies in the potential to blend ambiguity and uncertainty with the established AHP. FAHP transforms information into a defuzzification state through signal-to-noise ratios, normalization, and pairwise comparison. The principal parameters considered are revenue, sold packing units, CAGR, packing materials, consumption, and CO2 emissions (A, B, C, D, E, and F, respectively). From the normalized defuzzified weight result, consumption (Parameter E) is the best (normalized weight, 0.8685917), while CO2 emissions (Parameter F) was the worst …

Examining Efforts, Rewards, Burnout, And Intention To Leave Among Full-Time Nursing Faculty, Jacqueline Christianson, Kathryn J. Malin, Jessica Leiberg, Lisa Grabert, Jessica Zemlak
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Background: The nursing faculty shortage is a contributor to the nursing shortage. Intention to leave the full-time faculty role for non-retirement reasons, including poor effort-reward balance or burnout, may be a underacknowledged contributor to the faculty shortage (Leiberg et al., 2025; Malin et al., 2024). The Effort-Reward Imbalance model predicts both burnout and intention to leave as an outcome of poor balance between efforts required by work and rewards obtained through work (Siegrist & Li, 2020). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between efforts, rewards, burnout, and intention to leave among full-time nursing faculty using the …

Embedding Trauma-Informed Care In Nursing Education: Strategies For Healthy Work Environments, Rachel Ann Elliott, Kathryn Pfaff, Edward Cruz, Sherry Morrell, Adrian Guta
Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)
Background: Trauma is ubiquitous within society; it is experienced by people who access healthcare, and their care providers, including nursing students who experience high rates of adverse childhood experiences (Gilroy et al., 2024). Although trauma-informed care (TIC) is an established approach that addresses the widespread health effects of trauma (Wathen et al., 2021), its systematic integration in nursing education curricula is lacking (Pfeiffer & Grabbe, 2022). This leaves new graduate nurses ill-equipped to competently support clients and families who have experienced trauma, compromising a safe culture of care (Ross et al., 2025).
Purpose: To explore individual, relational, structural, and organizational …

Abortion Politics And Policy: Stigma And Access In The Silver State, Celene Fuller
Lincy Institute Events
In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) overturning Roe V. Wade, states have taken divergent paths in regulating access to abortion services. In 2024, Nevada voters overwhelmingly passed Question 6 proposing to codify abortion rights into the state constitution. In November 2026, Question 6 will again be on the ballot for final confirmation. If it passes, these rights will be protected from future legislative action.
Despite Nevadans’ strong support for abortion rights, the state’s dearth of abortion providers limits access to these services. As this lecture explores, both providers and individuals seeking abortions, …

Breeding For Diverse Color And Protein Quality In Popcorn And Sweet Corn, Jonathan Niyorukundo
Breeding For Diverse Color And Protein Quality In Popcorn And Sweet Corn, Jonathan Niyorukundo
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
Sweet corn and popcorn are important crops consumed globally as vegetable and snack, respectively. They are deemed healthy foods due to high fiber and carotenoid contents, especially in yellow varieties. Commercial varieties are optimized for high-yielding agronomics, and previous efforts were made to improve specific macro- and micronutrient contents. Both sweet corn and popcorn have poor protein quality due to the inadequate essential amino acids such as lysine and tryptophan. Moreover, commercial varieties are predominantly yellow, thereby offering no diversity of other maize colors, which are potentially healthier and more appealing to the consumer. In this project, we sought to …

Why Western Michigan University Should Implement A Women's Varsity Ice Hockey Program, Lauren Young
Honors Theses
This study evaluates the feasibility and strategic value of implementing a varsity women’s ice hockey program at Western Michigan University (WMU). As women’s ice hockey continues to experience significant growth at the youth, high school, and collegiate levels, disparities in participation opportunities persist, particularly within institutions that sponsor men’s hockey but not women’s programs. This research argues that WMU is well-positioned to address this gap by establishing a women’s varsity ice hockey team that aligns with institutional goals, gender-equity standards, and national participation trends.
A qualitative case study approach was used to assess feasibility through three primary areas: institutional comparison, …
