Advanced Optimization And Integration Of Gas Turbine For Centrifugal Nuclear Thermal Rocket, Cameron Gillette, John Bulter-Basner, Isaiah Smith, Aidan Hefele, Cal Mohoney, Christopher Peters
Mechanical Engineering Capstone Design Projects
This project focused on the design, analysis, and optimization of a gas turbine intended to drive the Centrifugal Fuel Element (CFE) in a Centrifugal Nuclear Thermal Rocket (CNTR) system. The primary objective was to develop a turbine capable of achieving rotational speeds approaching 10,000 RPM while operating within the geometric and experimental constraints of a laboratory-scale model. Achieving this rotational speed is critical to maintaining proper containment of liquid nuclear fuel and enabling efficient propulsion performance.
The design process began with the evaluation of two initial turbine concepts: the Coriolis turbine and the J-blade turbine. Each design utilized a different …

They’Ve Been Waiting For Me A Long Time, Anna Minzer
Theses
They’ve Been Waiting for Me a Long Time is a photo-based project saturated in process, layers, and iterations. Using collage as a connective approach, They’ve Been Waiting for Me a Long Time interrogates the boundaries of the domestic and wild, the aestheticized and the abject and the trappings of gender in tension with queer values. As my visual art encapsulates a variety of approaches, my sources and inspirations manifest from a variety of media—installation, literature, philosophy, photography, and wallpaper. With an assortment of influences, I demonstrate a proclivity towards the liminal. A prime purpose of They’ve Been Waiting for Me …
Behaviour-Based Gender Prediction Using Mobile App Usage Patterns, Saleha Alblooshi
Behaviour-Based Gender Prediction Using Mobile App Usage Patterns, Saleha Alblooshi
Theses
Widespread usage of mobile applications has generated massive behavioural information, which reflects routines, preferences, and lifestyles of users. Gender, demographic details are typically gathered in telecommunications settings in the registration of the SIM, but this data is often based on administrative ownership, and not the user of the device. This inconsistency can break the customer profiling, accuracy of segmentation and effectiveness of targeted marketing. The study is exploring the hypothesis through the examination of the data obtained based on an undertaking to check the validity of the registered gender data in telecommunication customer relationship management systems by using the behavioural …

Automated Analysis Of Radiation Oncology Incident Reports Using Large Language Models, Nathan A. Dobranski
LSU Master's Theses
Patient safety incident reporting in radiation oncology requires expert analysis that is time-intensive and subject to variability. This thesis presents the development and technical validation of a locally deployed large language model (LLM) system for automated incident report analysis across multiple cancer centers. The system was designed for automated summarization and taxonomy assignment of Radiation Oncology Incident Learning System (RO-ILS) reports, operating entirely on local infrastructure to preserve patient privacy. A two-round, multi-rater evaluation methodology was employed, incorporating 600 total expert evaluations from two academic cancer centers. Round 1 established baseline performance using Mistral 7B and Mixtral 8x7B models with …

Does Climate Disclosure Work To Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions? Emerging Evidence Suggests Cautious Optimism., Cynthia A. Williams
Articles by Maurer Faculty
The purpose of this Article is to bring some of the emerging empirical literature evaluating the effects of required greenhouse gas (GHG) disclosure to bear on discussions of disclosure as a mechanism to address climate change. Since disclosure has become such a significant part of global efforts to address climate change, whether it has the effects in fact that are attributed to it in theory is properly subject to interrogation. In this Article, several interrelated questions will be discussed. First, what does the empirical evidence show about the effects of required (GHG) disclosures on emissions? What mechanisms are engaged in …

Spatial analysis of gene expression patterns has been a key technique for revealing the potential functions of genes. Traditionally, these analyses conducted using in-situ hybridizations and other labor-intensive protocols were constrained to examining only a few candidate genes per sample. However, the advent of spatial transcriptomic techniques like Slide-seqV2 has transformed this field, enabling massively parallel exploration of gene expression patterns within their tissue contexts by pairing spatial locations with RNA sequencing. Despite its potential, Slide-seqV2 datasets often produce fewer usable reads than expected. We have identified that a significant source of errors in the technology stems from the chemical …
The Intersection Of Religion & Politics In The United States: Analyses At The Federal And State Level, Cristina Melissa Pimenta
The Intersection Of Religion & Politics In The United States: Analyses At The Federal And State Level, Cristina Melissa Pimenta
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
This project examines the intersection of religion and politics in the United States, particularly concerning Christian Nationalism. Existing scholarship has linked the religio-political ideology to several culturally relevant issues, including xenophobia and nativism, racism, homophobia and transphobia, and anti-vaccine rhetoric. My dissertation continues this research by exploring the impact of Christian Nationalism on reproductive rights and, in turn, on gender equality. I assert that as the saliency of Christian Nationalism in the United States has increased, gender equality has decreased. I also argue that the higher the saliency of Christian Nationalism in an individual state, the lower the gender equality …

Money And Power: How Big Money Shapes Democracy In The United States, Paige Long
Money And Power: How Big Money Shapes Democracy In The United States, Paige Long
Thinking Matters Symposium
This project explores the question: what could and should be done to strengthen democracy in the United States? More specifically, it examines the role that large amounts of money in politics play in shaping political power and representation. The central argument of this project is that reducing the influence of big money in political campaigns and policymaking is necessary for creating a more fair and representative democratic system. When wealthy donors, corporations, and special interest groups are able to spend large amounts of money to influence elections and policy decisions, it can limit the political voice of ordinary citizens.

Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines For The Risk Stratification And Anesthetic Management Of Geriatric Surgery Patients At High Risk For Postoperative Cognitive Dysfunction Undergoing Non-Cardiac Surgery, Patrick M. Garvey
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
As the global geriatric surgical population rapidly expands, managing complications like postoperative cognitive dysfunction is increasingly essential, given its adverse impacts on recovery, quality of life, and healthcare costs. Postoperative cognitive dysfunction can lead to extended hospital stays, delayed recovery, and significant cognitive decline, particularly among elderly patients exposed to general anesthesia. This quality improvement final scholarly project develops and hypothetically implements evidence-based practice guidelines for anesthetic management in geriatric patients at high risk for postoperative cognitive dysfunction undergoing non-cardiac surgery. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project uses preoperative cognitive assessments, such as the Mini-Cog tool, to identify patients …
Practice Considerations For Perioperative Ondansetron Use In Parturients Undergoing Cesarean Sections With Spinal Anesthesia, Mackenzie Glaros
Practice Considerations For Perioperative Ondansetron Use In Parturients Undergoing Cesarean Sections With Spinal Anesthesia, Mackenzie Glaros
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Elective cesarean sections are often performed with spinal anesthesia, a form of neuraxial anesthesia that offers superior pain relief and reduces the risks associated with general anesthesia. However, over 50% of parturients experience side effects from spinal anesthesia, including shivering, hypotension, nausea, and vomiting, which can cause both physiological and psychological issues for the laboring mother and be detrimental to the fetus. Preventing these side effects is vital for improving safety, patient satisfaction, and minimizing complications. While various interventions and medications have been explored to manage these effects, no standardized guidelines exist for their prevention. A review of existing literature …

Proposed Evidence-Based Practice Consideration: The Use Of Remimazolam Tosilate Instead Of Propofol For Endoscopic Procedures Under Monitored Anesthesia Care In The Elderly Population, Tayler Lynn Detwiler
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Endoscopic procedures are essential for diagnosing and managing gastrointestinal conditions, particularly in a growing elderly population. The selection of sedative agents significantly influences patient safety and procedural outcomes. Propofol, the traditional choice, is successful but associated with risks such as hypotension, bradycardia, and respiratory depression, particularly in elderly patients. This hypothetical Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project explores the use of remimazolam tosilate (RT), a novel ultra-short-acting benzodiazepine, as an alternative to propofol during monitored anesthesia care (MAC) for elderly patients undergoing endoscopic procedures. The project utilizes a randomized controlled trial (RCT) design to compare RT and propofol regarding hemodynamic …

The rise in abdominal laparoscopic surgeries has underscored the need for improved ventilation strategies to reduce postoperative pulmonary complications, such as atelectasis, ventilator-induced lung injury, and pneumonia. These complications can increase hospital stays, healthcare costs, and mortality. This final scholarly project investigates the impact of lung protective ventilation in adult patients undergoing abdominal laparoscopic procedures and proposes guidelines for implementation. Lung protective ventilation strategies, including low tidal volume ventilation, individualized positive end-expiratory pressure, and recruitment maneuvers. Current research shows potential in mitigating postoperative pulmonary complications by improving intraoperative oxygenation and lung compliance. Using the Johns Hopkins Evidence-Based Practice model, this …
Evidence-Based Guidelines For Intraoperative Quantitative Neuromuscular Monitoring, Noah Graham
Evidence-Based Guidelines For Intraoperative Quantitative Neuromuscular Monitoring, Noah Graham
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Nondepolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents are routinely used medications vital to anesthetic care. When administering neuromuscular blocking agents, monitoring neuromuscular blockade depth and degree of recovery is a standard of nurse anesthesia practice to facilitate adequate recovery. If not adequately reversed, postoperative residual neuromuscular blockade can cause severe complications. Traditional qualitative neuromuscular monitoring practices largely contribute to the continuing high incidence of postoperative residual neuromuscular blockade, as supported by research that qualitative monitoring methods are insensitive to the depth of blockade and clinical situations, providing unreliable physiologic information. As recommended in practice guidelines by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, quantitative neuromuscular …
