Protein Modeling Reports
A staggering 21 million people are currently affected by Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), a condition that can impact an individual’s ability to complete even the most basic everyday activities. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which is taken back to nerve cells through a process called reuptake. However, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor, (SSRIs), block this process, therefore making more serotonin available to help promote communication in the brain.
The Protein Data Bank file of ts2 human serotonin transporter was retrieved from the Protein Data Bank (PDB ID: 5I6Z). Additional PDB files were utilized to analyze various SSRIs and their respective central and …

Research on legal diffusion typically focuses on laws’ initial adoption and ignores their later evolution. We develop a typology of three subsequent diffusion patterns: convergence, when countries revise laws to move closer to leading regulators; customization, when countries revise laws to move away from leading regulators; and stagnation, when countries cease legislating, leaving initially adopted laws in place. We then propose a general theory suggesting that economic size and geographic distance from leading regulators predict which of the three patterns countries follow. We explore this theory with case studies on the dynamic diffusion of antitrust laws in Russia, Colombia, and …

Journal of Catholic Education
Educators are instrumental in nurturing students’ sense of purpose, particularly in urban schools. Consequently, these educators must not only have a strong sense of purpose but also possess other key virtues. This mixed-methods study explores these virtues among a group of 30 urban Catholic school teachers. They responded to scales measuring purpose, compassion, faith, moral development and agency, and completed a modified Youth Purpose Interview online. Scores were compared to those of the original samples upon which these scales were validated as they were also emerging adults. Participants scored significantly higher on almost all scales than the original samples. These …

The Retention And Promotion Of Female Auditors At Big-4 Accounting Firms, Jade Huayu Chen, Nicholas Hallman, Jayanthi Sunder
Accounting Faculty Works
Each of the “Big 4” accounting firms has established an explicit goal of reaching gender parity among their employees - particularly among employees in senior positions. Using a dataset consisting of the career histories of more than 91 thousand unique auditors spanning several decades, we examine the firms’ progress towards this goal by tracking gender differences in auditor retention and promotion. Consistent with concerns expressed both in the press and in prior academic research, we find that women were historically more likely than men to leave the Big 4 firms. We also find that, conditional on staying in the Big …
Assessment Of The Intersectionality Of Muslim And Queer Identities, Elisha Sledge
Assessment Of The Intersectionality Of Muslim And Queer Identities, Elisha Sledge
Undergraduate Research Posters 2024
Queerness can be a taboo subject in many Muslim communities. However, little academic research explores the intersection between queer and Muslim identities. This project employs an audio-ethnographic approach to explore the intersections of familial judgment and sexual identity among Queer Muslims. We believe that familial judgment plays a critical role in shaping the experiences of Queer Muslims, potentially leading to heightened levels of anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts and attempts because of anticipated familial rejection. By integrating ethnographic methods with audio recordings, this study seeks to capture the nuanced personal narratives and lived experiences of individuals identifying as both Queer …

Undergraduate Research Posters 2024
The dominant subculture in each region significantly influences long-term behavioral changes. Strict social norms can result in deeply internalized punishment. Since enculturation and acculturation play a significant role in shaping established and accepted social norms, a complex interplay of sociocultural phenomena can be held accountable. Anthropology, sociology, and religious studies provide an interdisciplinary framework that can help explain how religion influences systemic discrimination. This study utilized interview techniques, short-term ethnography, and grounded theory methodology to collect data for an innovative framework and form a coherent theory to support this framework. The study focused on transgender and non-binary individuals in Northeast …

Dobbs V. Employee Benefits: Major Questions Left After The Landmark Decision, Brendan Mohan
Dobbs V. Employee Benefits: Major Questions Left After The Landmark Decision, Brendan Mohan
Akron Law Student Publications
The Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned nearly fifty years of precedent established in Roe v. Wade, shifting the power to regulate abortion laws from the federal government to individual states. This seismic legal shift has raised significant questions about the intersection of state abortion laws and employee benefits, particularly for companies that offer abortion-related benefits through employer-sponsored health plans. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) contains express and implied preemption provisions that have historically shielded employee benefit plans from conflicting state regulations. However, the extent to which ERISA can be used …
