Implementing The Self-Assessment Melanoma Risk Scoring In Primary Care, Amanda D. Hays Jan 2024

Implementing The Self-Assessment Melanoma Risk Scoring In Primary Care, Amanda D. Hays

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Skin cancer is one of the most prevalent yet treatable cancers. Head-to-toe skin assessments are recommended for high-risk patients. However, there is no universal risk-scoring method. At a suburban primary care clinic, providers revealed concerns about the overall lack of skin exams conducted. At this practice there is no skin assessment protocol in place for any group of patients, and skin exams are seldom performed unless prompted by a patient’s request. This quality improvement project evaluated the success of using the Self Assessment for Melanoma (SAMScore) to determine high-risk patients and the subsequent completion of a head-to-toe skin assessment and …

The Theories Of Corporate Pershonhood And Their Three False Choices: Developing A Framework For Corporate Rights, Katharine Jackson Jan 2024

The Theories Of Corporate Pershonhood And Their Three False Choices: Developing A Framework For Corporate Rights, Katharine Jackson

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Scholars often use the theories of corporate personhood—aggregation theory, concession theory, and real entity theory—to justify corporate rights through analogy. That is, theories of corporate personhood attempt to explain what rights corporations ought to have based on what kind of person the corporation is like. If corporations are like individual human beings, then corporations should enjoy all the same rights that human beings do. If corporations are like states, then corporations should owe the same obligations that a state owes its citizens. Of course, many scholars have addressed the weaknesses of this kind of analogical reasoning. As Dewey argued long …

Public And Private Fiduciaries: Representation In States, Corporations, Trusts And Agents, Katharine Jackson Jan 2024

Public And Private Fiduciaries: Representation In States, Corporations, Trusts And Agents, Katharine Jackson

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

Over the past decade, political and legal theorists began conscripting private fiduciary law to delimit and define the duties of public officials. While enlisting additional legal prophylactics against arbitrary government may have appeared especially appealing during a Trump administration characterized by corruption and racism, this Article argues that straightforwardly applying fiduciary doctrine to political office is risky business. While scholars rightly point out the long, cross-pollinated history of the law of public and private trust, and while they recognize that rules against self-dealing fiduciaries apply equally well to both public and private officials, they occlude an important conceptual difference between …

Dignity Deferred: Supriyo V. Union Of India And Lgbtq Rights, Ryan Thoreson Jan 2024

Dignity Deferred: Supriyo V. Union Of India And Lgbtq Rights, Ryan Thoreson

Faculty Articles and Other Publications

In Supriyo v. Union of India, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court declined to find that same-sex couples have a right to marry under India’s Constitution. The various opinions in the case repeatedly recognised and affirmed the dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people, but ultimately found that exclusion from civil marriage did not run afoul of constitutional guarantees. In this Essay, I examine the limited understanding of dignity employed by the bench in Supriyo, juxtaposing this with both domestic and comparative LGBTQ rights decisions that embraced a more substantive understanding of dignity. I argue that …

Behind Bars: An Analysis Of The Incarceration Of Black Americans, Tommy A. Valente Jan 2024

Behind Bars: An Analysis Of The Incarceration Of Black Americans, Tommy A. Valente

Tenor of Our Times

In this study, I attempt to explain the disproportionate incarceration rates which exist in the United States. The black American are incarcerated at a significantly higher rate than any other ethnic group in the country. I hypothesize single parent households and poor public education systems will have significant influences on incarceration rates. For this study I run an OLS regression and use data from all fifty states between 2019-2020. I use seven independent variables in this study: ACGR score, GDP per capita, unemployment rate, percent of births to unmarried women, homicide rate, population, and political party affiliation of a state. …

A Geometric Model For Syzygies Over 2-Calabi–Yau Tilted Algebras Ii, Ralf Schiffler, Khrystyna Serhiyenko Jan 2024

A Geometric Model For Syzygies Over 2-Calabi–Yau Tilted Algebras Ii, Ralf Schiffler, Khrystyna Serhiyenko

Mathematics Faculty Publications

In this article, we continue the study of a certain family of 2-Calabi–Yau tilted algebras, called dimer tree algebras. The terminology comes from the fact that these algebras can also be realized as quotients of dimer algebras on a disk. They are defined by a quiver with potential whose dual graph is a tree, and they are generally of wild representation type. Given such an algebra B, we construct a polygon S with a checkerboard pattern in its interior, which defines a category Diag(S). The indecomposable objects of Diag(S) are the 2-diagonals in S, and its morphisms are certain pivoting …

The Role Of Local Knowledge In Climate Change Research, Ryan E. Mccoy Jan 2024

The Role Of Local Knowledge In Climate Change Research, Ryan E. Mccoy

Theses and Dissertations--Philosophy

This dissertation addresses the growing need within climate research for improvements in regional and local climate information. I argue that knowledge gaps in regional climate information constitute a form of climate injustice in which harm largely falls on regions most vulnerable to climate change. Moreover, I show that our current methods for garnering regional climate information fail to provide information on place-specific factors, such as local culture, socio-economic systems, and ecology, which mediate climate change impacts. In order to address these knowledge gaps, as well as provide information necessary for effective mitigation and adaptation, I argue for the inclusion of …

It's Worse If Superman Does It: Perceptions Of Moral Transgressions Committed By Superheroes And Supervillains, Justin Martin, Hansika Kapoor Jan 2024

It's Worse If Superman Does It: Perceptions Of Moral Transgressions Committed By Superheroes And Supervillains, Justin Martin, Hansika Kapoor

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

Superheroes are distinguished from supervillains due to their morally relevant behavior. However, what happens when they both engage in immoral behavior? This study examined how individuals perceive moral transgressions by their favorite superhero/villain in a quasi-experimental design. In line with Social Cognitive Domain Theory and Moral Foundations Theory, transgressions related to harm and justice were assessed. Specifically, participants (N = 363, predominantly White/Caucasian and South Asian) assessed characters’ likability, character traits, and moral evaluations. In line with hypotheses, results suggested that (a) superheroes were liked more than supervillains; (b) transgressions by superheroes were more morally impermissible than those by supervillains, …

Enhancing Cross-Modal Contextual Congruence For Crowdfunding Success Using Knowledge-Infused Learning, Trilok Padhi, Ugur Kursuncu, Yaman Kumar, Valerie L. Shalin, Lane Peterson Fronczek Jan 2024

Enhancing Cross-Modal Contextual Congruence For Crowdfunding Success Using Knowledge-Infused Learning, Trilok Padhi, Ugur Kursuncu, Yaman Kumar, Valerie L. Shalin, Lane Peterson Fronczek

Psychology Faculty Publications

The digital landscape continually evolves with multimodality, enriching the online experience for users. Creators and marketers aim to weave subtle contextual cues from various modalities into congruent content to engage users with a harmonious message. This interplay of multimodal cues is often a crucial factor in attracting users' attention. However, this richness of multimodality presents a challenge to computational modeling, as the semantic contextual cues spanning across modalities need to be unified to capture the true holistic meaning of the multimodal content. This contextual meaning is critical in attracting user engagement as it conveys the intended message of the brand …

Risky Business: Executive Compensation Attributes And Enterprise Risk Management, Stephanie Austin-Campbell

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Banks are among the most powerful corporations across the globe. The banking sector is the lifeblood of the economy, and excessive bank failure can have devasting consequences for economies worldwide. The economic crisis of 2008 began in the U.S. and encapsulated other countries. Using regression analysis models, this study examined the relationship between specific executive compensation elements and the organizational strategies used to manage enterprise risk through the lens of Behavioral Agency Theory (BAM). BAM is incorporated into the study to explain how different forms of executive compensation influence executives’ tendencies to appropriately mitigate gains and losses. Historically, incurred agency …

Emotional State Of Small Animal Veterinarians And Euthanasia: A Global Approach, Cyriac Versini Jan 2024

Emotional State Of Small Animal Veterinarians And Euthanasia: A Global Approach, Cyriac Versini

Theses & ETDs

Euthanasia is a very common practice in veterinary medicine, encountered by small animals veterinarians in their everyday practice as the number of companion animals have exponentially increased these last decades reflecting the societal changes from a rural multigenerational family unit to a urban nuclear model, including companion animals, considered henceforth as family members. Although common, euthanasia does not come without consequences on the emotional state of the veterinarians practitioners worldwide. To fully apprehend its effects, euthanasia has to be understood from a global approach, including ethics, legality and psychology. Euthanasia appears as an ethical challenge for veterinarians, not only because …

Revolutionizing The Way We Hear Music Through Cross-Genre Music Production, Nissi Luvavali Jan 2024

Revolutionizing The Way We Hear Music Through Cross-Genre Music Production, Nissi Luvavali

Theses & ETDs

In my recent music project, I experimented with cross-genre music production by creating an original track that blended elements from multiple genres. I combined live electric guitars with live drums to create a unique sound that was both energetic and melodic. I also merged experimental Djent metal and exotic middle eastern instruments to create a lengthy track that combined multiple styles of metal and electronic instruments. After producing the original track, I decided to create two remixes of famous pieces of classical music, incorporating elements of orchestral music and metal. This allowed me to explore different musical styles and create …

It’S All Just A Bunch Of Hocus Pocus: Reactions To Artifacts From One’S Own Or Another Religion, Raegan Thompson Jan 2024

It’S All Just A Bunch Of Hocus Pocus: Reactions To Artifacts From One’S Own Or Another Religion, Raegan Thompson

Theses & ETDs

Religiosity can manifest in many ways. This thesis makes a distinction between two different ways of being religious: securely or insecurely. Are these two manifestations related to how people respond to religious artifacts of their own or another religion? Are they related to the personality traits of agreeableness, openness, and narcissism? This thesis addressed these questions by exposing Wiccans and Catholics to a religious artifact and an accompanying story about either its Wiccan or Catholic origins. Participants then completed questions about their response to the artifact, religious security, and openness, agreeableness, and narcissism. The results show that both Wiccans and …

Ocr Of Greek, Chloe Jones Jan 2024

Ocr Of Greek, Chloe Jones

Theses & ETDs

The goal of this thesis is to create a program which is capable of transliterating Greek manuscripts. An existing Transformer-based Optical Character Recognition (TrOCR) software was identified which is able to be trained on provided datasets. The model requires images of individual lines for its training data. This thesis deals with the effort to convert images which contain one to two pages of a manuscript into a series of images each containing a single line of text. The images are first preprocessed, being binarized and having OpenCV’s morphological filters applied. Using linear regression, it is then determined how many columns …

Mitigating Affective Political Polarization On Social Media: A Literature Review, Xabier Rezola Jan 2024

Mitigating Affective Political Polarization On Social Media: A Literature Review, Xabier Rezola

Theses & ETDs

The creation of social media and news outlets have triggered an increase in political polarization, more specifically affective polarization. Proliferation of misinformation/disinformation, algorithms pushing people into filter bubbles, selective exposure leading to the development of echo chambers are just some of the ways social media can become extremely unhealthy and give way to high levels of affective polarization. There is no need to fret, not yet, as there are ways to mitigate the issue of affective political polarization, this thesis intends to look at these ways while attempting to answer the question “To what extent does affective polarization exist on …

A Tight-Knit Community: An Ethnographic Study Of The Social Knitters Of Sarasota, Janie Day Jan 2024

A Tight-Knit Community: An Ethnographic Study Of The Social Knitters Of Sarasota, Janie Day

Theses & ETDs

This thesis presents a multifaceted exploration of those who knit with others and form communities through the knitting hobby. Utilizing ethnographic research from three interconnected knitting groups in Sarasota, Florida, interviews with six knitters, as well as the existing literature on knitting, I look into three major themes. First, I explore the implications surrounding the evolving identity of those who knit through the concepts of “old knitting” and “new knitting” and focus on how the knitters I spoke with perceive their own identity as a knitter. I also write about knitting’s previous confinement to the home and its recent transition …

Theses & ETDs

This thesis delves into the realm of sleep issues and disorders, probing the intricacies of optimal sleep patterns and the factors influencing them. At the core of this inquiry lies the persistent question: “If sleep is paramount, why do some people struggle to attain it?” The research goal is to identify the biological and environmental elements that impede a person’s ability to obtain sufficient rest. I collected data about myself every day from January 4th to May 5th, from diary entries and a wristband that tracks physical activity and sleep metrics throughout the day and night. Using statistical analysis and …

Evaluating Indicators Of Success And Sustainability In Community Forests, Brittney Hall Jan 2024

Evaluating Indicators Of Success And Sustainability In Community Forests, Brittney Hall

Theses & ETDs

Community forests are forests managed by local communities. They can be beneficial in socioeconomic contexts and can have positive impacts in supporting local biodiversity of plants and animals. Community forests are considered generally effective at countering deforestation and serve as valuable systems for local communities and as a response to climate change. However, the effectiveness of community forestry is dependent on a variety of socio-ecological factors, thus presenting a need for the success and efficacy of community forests to be evaluated and assessed in a rigorous and objective manner. The purpose of this thesis is to identify socio-ecological variables that …

What Makes This Thesis Philosophy? Exploring Examples Of Systematic Discrimination At Multiple Levels Of Philosophical Discourse, Marshall Bustamante Jan 2024

What Makes This Thesis Philosophy? Exploring Examples Of Systematic Discrimination At Multiple Levels Of Philosophical Discourse, Marshall Bustamante

Theses & ETDs

Philosophy, as a field, has historically struggled to include women at every level. This is problematic; as a field, philosophy must include women in order to be more applicable to more people. I look at two types of discrimination that I think are responsible for the low numbers of women in the field, being discrimination based solely on gender and discrimination based on ideas. Discrimination based on gender can be defined quite simply as discrimination experienced solely on the lines of gender, whereas discrimination based on ideas can either focus on markers of identity, leading to people with those identities …

Bombazos Y Belonging: Exploring Belonging And Connection Between Latine Students Through Dance At A Pwi, Gabriella Batista Quintana

Theses & ETDs

By utilizing dance and performance ethnography in tandem with the practice of bomba (an Afro-Puerto Rican dance, genre, and drum), this thesis seeks to understand the themes of belonging and connection amongst Latine students at New College of Florida, a predominately White institution (PWI). How may dance act as a safe space, or counterspace, for students of marginalized identities to foster a sense of belonging? Can connecting to one another, despite our cultural differences within the Latine diaspora, lend itself to finding “home” in an otherwise hostile PWI? According to this study’s participants, finding familiar aspects of one’s culture amongst …

Upsides Of Cutting Down On Social Media: Potential Relationships With Self-Esteem, Self-Concept Clarity, And Social Anxiety, Sidny Hall

Theses & ETDs

Research on the relationship between social media use and self-esteem has shown mixed effects, some positive and some negative, and highlighted the importance of individual variables in determining the magnitude and direction of the relationship. The current study aimed to examine self-concept clarity and social anxiety as moderators in the relationship between reducing social media use and increasing self-esteem. Hypotheses predicted reducing social media use would increase self-esteem, low self-concept clarity levels would predict a greater increase in self-esteem than high self-concept clarity levels, and high social anxiety levels would predict a greater increase in self-esteem than low social anxiety …
