Latitudinal Distribution Of Dust And Dust Storms Over Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia Using Surface Observations, Ahmed S. Hantoush, Mohammed A. Alomary, Adel M. Awad

Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Meteorology, Environment and Arid Land Agriculture

This study examines the spatial and temporal variability of dust (DU) and dust-storm (DS) activity across Saudi Arabia using surface observations for the period 1979–2008, with a focus on the spring season (March–May). The study area was divided into three latitudinal zones from south to north (Zones 1–3). Monthly, seasonal, and annual frequencies of DU and DS events were analyzed to identify spatial differences, seasonal patterns, extreme events, and long-term trends. The results reveal strong spatial variability in dust activity across the three zones, with a clear latitudinal gradient with increasing dust activity toward northern regions. Zone 3 experiences the …

High-Caliber Tensions: Implications Of Florida’S Medical Marijuana Program On The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, George Bell, Kate E. Altman May 2026

High-Caliber Tensions: Implications Of Florida’S Medical Marijuana Program On The Right To Keep And Bear Arms, George Bell, Kate E. Altman

University of Miami Law Review

What is more valuable—the right to protect yourself, or the right to seek medical treatment? Presently, law abiding Floridians must choose between the two. Because the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (“ATF”) classifies medical marijuana patients as “unlawful drug users,” Floridians enrolled in the State’s medical marijuana scheme are prohibited from lawfully owning firearms. A lawsuit currently pending before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals seeks to address this constitutional conflict. This Article discusses that lawsuit, the legal framework in which it’s proceeding, and how courts may decide the appropriate balance between such fundamental questions.

Incorporating Play-Based Learning While Meeting State Standards, Alicia Muer May 2026

Incorporating Play-Based Learning While Meeting State Standards, Alicia Muer

Graduate Teacher Education

This paper reviews the benefits of incorporating developmentally appropriate practices into the classroom through a play-based approach. This is a controversial topic, as most teachers are more concerned with teaching to the standards than with the needs of students as a whole. Fifteen studies, including qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, and action research, were used to examine what developmentally appropriate practices are. Three themes emerged from the studies: play-based learning, professional development, and teacher-student collaboration. In the play-based theme, a sub-theme emerged which focused on games and gaming. The findings showed that students thrive more in an environment where play-based learning is …

How Are Us Legal Attorneys Being Prepared To Handle Ai-Enhanced Evidence During Evidence Discovery?, Enoch Martin May 2026

How Are Us Legal Attorneys Being Prepared To Handle Ai-Enhanced Evidence During Evidence Discovery?, Enoch Martin

Honors

Evidence is the means by which arguments are presented, supported, and challenged in the United States court of law. With the recent emergence of consumer AI-systems in 2023 and their unprecedented growth since, U.S. courts are facing the greatest disruption in evidentiary procedure since the introduction of photographs over a century ago. Yet despite widespread acceptance of this fact, there exists no discussions regarding how US attorneys are being prepared to uphold the right of U.S. citizens’ to proper representation in court by properly challenging and defending the admission of AI-enhanced evidence. This project examines how U.S. courts and legal …

A Clinical Risk Index For 30-Day Psychiatric Readmissions, Kenneth Theodore Kinter May 2026

A Clinical Risk Index For 30-Day Psychiatric Readmissions, Kenneth Theodore Kinter

Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of this descriptive, retroactive, and quantitative study were to create a risk index to predict 30-day readmissions to a state psychiatric hospital and to lend clarity to the conflicting research on 30-day readmissions. This study assessed discharges from 2006-2019 (N = 4,555) across over 28 variables ranging from patient, hospital, and discharge domains. This study created a model comprised of significant variables and converted it into a weighted risk index. These significant variables included: circulatory disease diagnosis, previous admissions to hospital, number of psychiatric diagnoses, region of discharge, PACT referral, and level of placement. The resulting index predicted …

Teaching Exercise: A Survey On Educational Aids And Self-Efficacy, Joshua I. Eaton, Lucas Morgan, Matthew Hermes May 2026

Teaching Exercise: A Survey On Educational Aids And Self-Efficacy, Joshua I. Eaton, Lucas Morgan, Matthew Hermes

Honors College Theses

HEPs are an important part of therapeutic treatment because they allow for greater exercise stimulus than can be achieved from supervised exercise alone. 94.7% of physical therapists reported prescribing HEPs to their patients. However, patient adherence to these plans can be as low as 35%. Lack of HEP adherence likely leads to sub-optimal clinical outcomes in physical therapy patients. Self-efficacy is improved in patients by supplementing HEPs with instructional aids, especially in the form of videos instead of pictures or descriptions, because they act as a form of vicarious experience. It is possible that improving self-efficacy through vicarious experience could …

Why Read In The Age Of Post-Literacy?, Corrine H. Martello

Educational Studies Honors Papers

This research paper aims to answer the question, “Why read?” by exploring the significance and purpose of reading, during what many have begun to call the post-literacy era, in order to convey the message that we as human beings have a fundamental need for reading and a failure to fulfill this need may result in an inability to reach one’s full potential as both an individual and as a society at large.

Analyzing Preparedness For Compliance With The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (Cbam) Across Member States Of The European Union, Vincent Pfattner

Politics Honors Papers

The European Union’s implementation of the CBAM is a climate change-driven initiative aimed at preventing carbon leakages. This thesis aims to investigate the underlying reasons for the variation in preparedness to comply with CBAM. Exposure to CBAM-covered Extra-EU imports serves as a proxy for preparedness, a measure of the economic constraints EU countries face. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, including Regression Analysis, Bayesian model averaging, and comparative case studies of EU countries. The results show a strong association between preparedness levels and institutional factors, particularly regulatory capacity. In contrast, political, financial, and geographical factors exhibit limited influence on a …

Differences In Gendered Educational Experiences Through A Hegemonic Lens: Cultural Influences On Schooling Norms, Camille M. Hubbs

Educational Studies Honors Papers

Recent research literature has found boys to be failing in school compared to girls; because of this a wave of awareness and furthered research on boys has followed. However, girls’ struggles in education must not be ignored as a result of boys’ issues. This project aims to describe and analyze the differences in educational experiences that both sexes have, and it operates under the understanding that culture is a primary influence on these different experiences. Experiences are divided into three broad sections: academic outcomes, confidence, and behaviors. In short, boys generally have worse academic outcomes, girls have poor confidence, and …

Julie And Julia 2.0 Emergent Themes Of “One Year” Food Blogging Challenge, Anna Hollrah

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This study analyzed the thematic patterns that emerge in year-end posts by food bloggers who undertook a one-year blogging challenge. Using rhetorical criticism and an open coding process, 25 reflective blog posts were analyzed to identify recurring themes and motivations from the legacies of Julia Child and Julie Powell. The analysis identified seven primary themes, which were then grouped into two categories: advice and response. The themes included authenticity, inspiration, hard work, learning, enjoyment, gratitude, and community building.

Several of these themes reflected the influence and advice of Child and Powell, and they also highlighted the blogger’s personal growth, creativity, …

From Crops To Kilowatts: The Growing Energy Potential Of Modern Agriculture, Karlee M. Crowe May 2026

From Crops To Kilowatts: The Growing Energy Potential Of Modern Agriculture, Karlee M. Crowe

Honors Theses

Agriculture has traditionally been defined as merely the production of food, fiber, and raw materials. Growing global challenges such as rising energy demand, resource depletion, and environmental degradation are reshaping the agricultural industry. This paper argues that modern agriculture has the potential to expand beyond its conventional roles by integrating renewable energy production—specifically through agrivoltaics and biomass generation—into existing agricultural practices. By focusing on these two main systems, this study highlights how the agriculture industry can implement energy production into already existing practices. Drawing on scientific literature and government sources, this study analyzes the environmental, economic, and social implications of …

Unbottling The Truth: A Study Of Alcohol Rehabilitation Access And Outcomes In Kentucky, Kendall Pierce

Honors Theses

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) remains a significant public health concern in the United States, with disproportionately higher rates in Kentucky. Despite the availability of various treatment modalities, barriers to access and perceptions of treatment effectiveness continue to influence recovery outcomes. This study examines the accessibility and perceived success of alcohol rehabilitation programs in Kentucky through qualitative focus groups with individuals with lived experience of AUD (n = 9). Using an inductive thematic analysis approach, four major themes were identified: individual readiness for recovery, social support and resource navigation, structural barriers within the treatment system, and perceived characteristics of …

Bridging The Literacy Achievement Gap With Diverse Children's Literature, Sammy Siemon May 2026

Bridging The Literacy Achievement Gap With Diverse Children's Literature, Sammy Siemon

Masters Projects

Classrooms across the globe contain immensely diverse populations of students, many of which are not well represented in the texts that they interact with inside of the classroom. This becomes especially noticeable in the intervention setting, when students are already reading below the proficiency level for their grade and may already have doubts about their ability to fit in within the learning space. Read-alouds and repeated rereading are often heralded for their impact on literacy development, they can be utilized in the intervention setting using texts that help to foster student identity, empathy and belonging. This project is grounded heavily …

Invisible Fallout: Economic Health, Environmental Injustice, And The Social Legacy Of The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, Isabella G. Bailey-Sims

Honors Theses

This paper examines the long-term impacts of the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) in western Kentucky, framing its legacy as a form of “invisible fallout” in which economic growth was accompanied by delayed environmental and public health consequences. Established in the early 1950s, the plant served as a major economic driver, providing stable employment and transforming the regional economy. However, its operation involved the handling of radioactive materials and hazardous chemicals, leading to environmental contamination and occupational exposure risks that were not fully disclosed during its active years.

Drawing on epidemiological studies, environmental reports, and socioeconomic analyses, this study identifies …

Why Did Pikeville Blow Up That Mountain? Post-Evaluation On Public Projects In The United States, Gavin Cantrell May 2026

Why Did Pikeville Blow Up That Mountain? Post-Evaluation On Public Projects In The United States, Gavin Cantrell

Honors Theses

Public project evaluation in the United States follows that projects are developed with constant checks and measurements to ensure that budgetary expectations, efficiency expectations, and output expectations are being met consistent with what was approved for the project. However, post-evaluation (also known as ex-evaluation) is not mandatory for constructing a project. Post-evaluation is a systematic approach of assessing and evaluating a project after its completion. Evidence suggests that there is no standardized system of post-evaluation across the branches of government, nor is there one that measures success. The logic model can fill this gap in post-evaluation. The logic model is …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent, manmade chemicals used since the 1950s in a wide variety of consumer products. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as PFAS, have been linked to an increase in hormone-sensitive cancers, such as breast and prostate, decreased fertility, decreased sperm count, genital malformations, and early puberty. This study utilized a mixed methods approach, including a literature review, a survey consisting of surface water and drinking water analysis, and a spatial analysis of public cancer data. Analyzed cancer data stratified by Kentucky River lower subbasin versus the remainder of the sectors, resulted in three significant p-values, …

Handmade Vs Ai, A 2d Animator’S Perspective, Leilani Scarambone May 2026

Handmade Vs Ai, A 2d Animator’S Perspective, Leilani Scarambone

Honors Theses

My honors thesis covers various aspects of animation and techniques used by animators to lessen time spent on a project, a brief summary of how AI functions and processes inputs, and finally a simple cross comparison of hand made animation and AI generated products of varying type. Animation with a fast-approaching deadline often requires animation tricks to be able to get the product out in time. I listed a few of the most prominent animation techniques and gave a brief overview of the evolution of 2D animation as it grew towards an easier workflow. 2D animation, even then, takes a …

When Credit Growth Diverges: Common Dynamics And Regional Heterogeneity In Italy, Claudio Barbieri, Mattia Guerini, Mauro Napoletano May 2026

When Credit Growth Diverges: Common Dynamics And Regional Heterogeneity In Italy, Claudio Barbieri, Mattia Guerini, Mauro Napoletano

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We investigate the structure and evolution of credit growth across Italian provinces. Using an econometric approach based on Random Matrix Theory, we decompose regional credit dynamics into common and idiosyncratic components. We use a longitudinal dataset of credit at the provincial level (NUTS-3 regions) covering the period 2000–2020 and document substantial heterogeneity in the synchronization of credit growth across local economies. Our results suggest that, while aggregate credit growth is largely driven by a strong common component, substantial heterogeneity emerges across disaggregated credit categories. Household mortgage lending displays strong and persistent co-movement across provinces, whereas corporate mortgages and unsecured credit …

What’S The Difference Without Deference: How The Eleventh Circuit Stopped Deferring To The Sentencing Commission And Shaped A New Landscape Of Federal Sentencing, Katherine Howard, Conrad Kahn May 2026

What’S The Difference Without Deference: How The Eleventh Circuit Stopped Deferring To The Sentencing Commission And Shaped A New Landscape Of Federal Sentencing, Katherine Howard, Conrad Kahn

University of Miami Law Review

The Sentencing Guidelines shape nearly every federal sentence. Judges must calculate and consider the Guidelines’ recommended range before deciding how long someone goes to prison. For decades, though, courts treated the Sentencing Commission’s commentary about the Guidelines as controlling—even when the guideline’s text was clear and unambiguous.

That changed with United States v. Dupree. Sitting en banc, the Eleventh Circuit held that the Supreme Court’s decision in Kisor v. Wilkie—which limits when courts may defer to an agency’s interpretation of its own rules—applies to the Sentencing Guidelines. After Dupree, courts may not defer to the commentary unless, …

First Amendment Forum Classification: Special Use Permits, Limited Public Forums, And The “Heckler’S Veto”, Elizabeth Price Foley

University of Miami Law Review

Pride Month is an important event in many communities because it celebrates and enhances the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community. Pridefest events occurring during Pride Month are well-attended but often mired by threats of violence. Such threats are often targeted at Pridefest drag shows, which exhibit gender-bending performances by drag queens and drag kings of one biological sex, who wear extravagant costumes that exaggerate gender stereotypes of the opposite biological sex. In Naples Pride, Inc. v. City of Naples, the Eleventh Circuit addressed whether a government may impose conditions on such drag shows when threats have been levied against …
