Nudging With Nomenclature Revision May Reduce Restorative Treatment Of Proximal Enamel Caries Lesions, S.M. Hashim Nainar Bds, Mdsc Jan 2024

Nudging With Nomenclature Revision May Reduce Restorative Treatment Of Proximal Enamel Caries Lesions, S.M. Hashim Nainar Bds, Mdsc

Journal of the American College of Dentists

Restorative treatment of asymptomatic proximal enamel caries lesions identified during radiographic screening imposes an unwarranted burden upon the patient and healthcare system. Despite guidance from a multinational expert consensus panel recommending non-invasive management for proximal enamel caries lesions, contemporary dentists worldwide continue to provide restorative intervention. A new strategy is needed to encourage evidence-based conservative management for proximal enamel caries lesions. It is suggested that emulating oncology’s linguistic-based strategy of nomenclature revision to encourage conservative management of lesions may be an effective, passive, nudging strategy to modify dental management of proximal enamel caries lesions.

Exploring The Removal Potential Of Multi-Pollutants From Water Matrices With Innovative Speciality Adsorbents In A Field-Scale Filtration System, Jinxiang Cheng

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

Driven by excess nutrients in water bodies, eutrophication has long been an issue in water resources management. Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in a highly eutrophic water body lead to hypoxia, creating a “dead zone,” which renders the oxygen levels inadequate for the survival of marine life. This study examined the field-scale filtration performance of two specialty absorbents to improve watershed remediation within a Total Maximum Daily Load program. The goal was to simultaneously remove nutrients and biological pollutants along Canal 23 (C-23) in the St. Lucie River Basin, Florida. The filtration system installed in the C-23 river corridor was equipped …

Developing A Course Enrollment Simulation Model To Improve College Graduation Outcomes, Rachel Straney Jan 2024

Developing A Course Enrollment Simulation Model To Improve College Graduation Outcomes, Rachel Straney

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

The process of enrolling and completing the courses needed to earn an undergraduate degree involves complex interactions between individual students and institutional policies and procedures, especially because student and institutional priorities do not always align. Traditional social and behavioral statistical methods are ineffective for modeling these interactions. Simulation and algorithm-based modeling approaches have been underutilized in higher education, but their adaptability can accommodate the complexity of the degree attainment process. The purpose of this research was to design, develop, validate, and apply a multi-method Course Enrollment Simulation Model (CESM), which mirrored the process of college students enrolling in courses required …

Bringing A Knife To A Gun Fight; A Cruel And Unusual Punishment, Halle Marchetta

Akron Law Student Publications

The Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. The Supreme Court of the United States has described the right as necessary to an individual’s ability to defend his or her person, home, and family. 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1) makes it a felony for a convicted felon to “ship, transfer, possess, or receive” firearms or ammunition. The statute blocks an entire class of the American people from exercising the individual freedom guaranteed to them by the Constitution. It does not matter whether the underlying felony conviction is for a non-violent crime or a …

Market Testing Boilerplate, Kelli Alces Williams Jan 2024

Market Testing Boilerplate, Kelli Alces Williams

Scholarly Publications

Boilerplate contract terms are regularly enforced against consumers who do not like them and would not have selected them if given a choice. But there is no choice. Such terms are offered on a take it or leave it basis to consumers who are either unaware of the terms until a problem arises or hope those terms will never have to be invoked. The lack of meaningful choice is justified by arguments that consumers will avoid contracts that contain harmful terms, so market constraints will prevent businesses from offering socially inefficient terms. If consumers really had a problem with certain …

Voting Rights: Litigating Materiality Under The Civil Rights Act, Michael T. Morley Jan 2024

Voting Rights: Litigating Materiality Under The Civil Rights Act, Michael T. Morley

Scholarly Publications

In recent years, plaintiffs have frequently invoked the Civil Rights Act's Materiality Provision as a basis for challenging state election laws. The Provision prevents states from denying a person's right to vote based on certain types of immaterial errors or omissions in his voter registration application or other election related filings. Historically, the Provision played an important role in combatting Jim Crow measures used to systematically disenfranchise African Americans. Today, it continues to protect voters from disenfranchisement based on minor, hypertechnical, picayune mistakes unrelated to their eligibility to vote. Some courts, however, have misinterpreted the Provision to prevent states from …

The Scope Of Election Litigation, Michael T. Morley Jan 2024

The Scope Of Election Litigation, Michael T. Morley

Scholarly Publications

One way to think about the scope of a case is based on the range of parties who are or must be involved in it. The broader a case's scope in this regard, the more burdensome and costly it can be for plaintiffs to file and the more complicated and time consuming it may be for a court to adjudicate. Requiring large numbers of parties to be involved in a case can sometimes effectively preclude otherwise meritorious suits from being filed. This is especially true in election law disputes which often arise under harried circumstances and can be subject to …
