Assessing The Socioeconomic Impacts Of Solar Irrigation In Myanmar: A Case Study Of Smallholder Farmers, May Thi Thi Moe

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study addresses the critical challenge of enhancing agricultural sustainability in Myanmar’s Central Dry Zone (CDZ), a region characterized by water scarcity and a high reliance on costly diesel irrigation. To address the knowledge gap on the localized impacts of solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS), this research assesses their socioeconomic benefits and adoption barriers among smallholder farmers in Pyawbwe Township. Guided by a revitalized 21st-Century Sustainable Livelihoods Framework, the study employed a qualitative design, conducting in-depth interviews with 27 farmers and four experts. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, complemented by economic calculations (ROI, PBP, NPV) to provide robust evidence of …

Student Achievement Growth Before And During Covid-19: Comparing In-Person And Remote Learning In Catholic And Public Schools, Stephen Ponisciak, Julie W. Dallavis Jan 2024

Student Achievement Growth Before And During Covid-19: Comparing In-Person And Remote Learning In Catholic And Public Schools, Stephen Ponisciak, Julie W. Dallavis

Journal of Catholic Education

In response to COVID-19, U.S. students learned remotely from mid-March to June 2020. At the start of academic year 2020-21, many schools remained remote but others—primarily Catholic and other private schools—reopened. We consider Catholic schooling as a proxy for in-person instruction and use national data from Renaissance Star and MAP Growth assessments to compare the achievement of similar students pre-pandemic, during the height of mitigation strategies, and after most schools reopened. In a departure from pre-pandemic growth patterns, students in Catholic schools showed more growth than those in public schools during the height of mitigation strategies, suggesting the importance of …

Self-Induced Extreme Intoxication: Brown And Section 33.1 Of The Criminal Code, Michelle S. Lawrence Jan 2024

Self-Induced Extreme Intoxication: Brown And Section 33.1 Of The Criminal Code, Michelle S. Lawrence

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Parliament enacted section 33.1 of the Criminal Code in 1995, in direct response to the Supreme Court of Canada’s 1994 decision in R. v. Daviault. Through this provision, it set out to remove the reach of the extreme intoxication defence from accused persons charged with personal violence offences, where their intoxication was self-induced. Parliament justified the imposition of criminal responsibility in these cases on the moral blameworthiness of voluntary intoxication, notwithstanding the majority’s ruling in Daviault that doing so offends the Charter. It was not until 2021 — more than 25 years after the enactment of section 33.1 — that …

Assembly And Analysis Of Space Biofilm-Forming Bacterial Model Organisms Towards The Treatment Of Water System Biofilms, Yo-Ann VéLez Justiniano Jan 2024

Assembly And Analysis Of Space Biofilm-Forming Bacterial Model Organisms Towards The Treatment Of Water System Biofilms, Yo-Ann VéLez Justiniano

Dissertations

Space exploration imposes unique challenges on the human body and engineered systems alike. One such challenge is the control of microbial life, specifically biofilms, within the water processor assembly of the International Space Station (ISS). This investigation aimed to determine the feasibility of using an innovative bioremediation approach to mitigate biofilm growth in the water processor assembly. This approach entails the dissemination of a desired anti-biofilm gene across the microbial population of the water processor assembly through horizontal gene transfer via conjugation. To ascertain the viability of this method, the research was divided into two primary focuses. The first part …

Leveraging Google Trends To Nowcast Covid-19 Epidemics: A Proposed Methodology, Kush Raj Shanker

Public Health Theses

The outbreak of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2019 has emphasized the need for accurate and timely estimation of infectious disease cases. An important aspect of controlling infectious diseases is the development of robust nowcasting methods, which involve estimating the current and near-future state of an epidemic using real-time data. Google Trends (GT) has emerged as a valuable tool in epidemiology, allowing researchers to track and predict disease outbreaks by analyzing patterns in internet users' searches. While GT provides real-time information on search queries related to infectious disease symptoms and treatment, it has limitations such as data reliability, privacy concerns, sampling …

A Framework For Identifying Transit Deserts In Rural Areas With Demand-Response Transit Services, Agnes L. Barnwell Jan 2024

A Framework For Identifying Transit Deserts In Rural Areas With Demand-Response Transit Services, Agnes L. Barnwell

Dissertations

The primary objective of this research is to develop a comprehensive framework for identifying transit deserts in rural areas with Demand Response Transit (DRT) services. This framework will focus on marginalized rural areas in Alabama, providing a foundation for better understanding their transportation needs. The research gap regarding transit deserts in rural areas is significant. While the concept of transit deserts has been explored in urban settings, rural areas with DRT services remain largely under-researched. Addressing this gap is vital for establishing equitable access to transit services across rural areas. This research contributes to the existing body of literature in …

Summer Critical Reading Initiative Helping Talent Search Students Redefine Their College Potential Through Literature, Tania Dominguez Jan 2024

Summer Critical Reading Initiative Helping Talent Search Students Redefine Their College Potential Through Literature, Tania Dominguez

Theses

Despite efforts to improve college access and develop college readiness skills, students are graduating high school unprepared for college. Each year, fewer students choose to enroll or drop out within their first semester of a post-secondary institution after high school graduation. The figures are even more dire for students who are from low-income and first-generation backgrounds. Furthermore, data shows that college-bound participants from federal pre-college TRIO programs are underserved in the most critical time of their high school journey. There is an educational gap in the services that pre-college programs, such as Talent Search, provide students. Educators and college counselors …

The Impact Of Rosenwald Schools On Black Communities In The Southern United States From 1912 - 1932, Kimberly Chapman Jan 2024

The Impact Of Rosenwald Schools On Black Communities In The Southern United States From 1912 - 1932, Kimberly Chapman

Theses

This is a story of Black people who transitioned from slavery to freedom, rising early in the mornings to work in the fields but also to get their children ready to walk miles to school. Many adults took night classes to learn the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. These simple things, such as knowing how to spell their names, had great meaning for formerly enslaved people, who wanted the opportunity to be identified by their names rather than a number or simply “boy” or “gal.” Some parents felt it was too late for them, but they were determined for …

The Opportunity Presented By The End Of Race-Conscious Admissions In Higher Education, Mohamed Akram Faizer Jan 2024

The Opportunity Presented By The End Of Race-Conscious Admissions In Higher Education, Mohamed Akram Faizer

City University of New York Law Review

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision to invalidate race-based admissions will problematically make it more difficult for underrepresented minorities' to gain admission to elite colleges and universities. However, it offers an opportunity to finally address racial inequality in access to preschool and K-12 education, by removing the political cover that allowed elite credentialing to perpetuate social advantage and ignore distributional justice. To create a more inclusive admissions process, cultural competence experts should collaborate with civil society to develop policies that consider all perspectives. This approach, inspired by administrative law's notice-and-comment framework, can help institutions prioritize factors like resilience over regressive metrics …

Write Things Right: How To Communicate Most Effectively About Climate Change, Lara Beckius

Economics Honors Papers

As the climate change crisis worsens, it is more important than ever that communicators understand the role that specific messaging plays in the formation of public opinion and the overall strength of the call for action. This study seeks to determine the most effective methods of communicating climate change-induced environmental issues to the general public to raise awareness of the issue and encourage solution-focused behavioral change. A review of current climate change communication techniques reveals that it is up to communicators to understand the limitations of their chosen media and the most effective tactics for communicating the complex issue with …

Income Source Effect Of Expectations And Seriousness On Spending Behavior, Ethan Sweeney Jan 2024

Income Source Effect Of Expectations And Seriousness On Spending Behavior, Ethan Sweeney

Economics Honors Papers

Mental accounting bias is the practice of people categorizing money and making financial decisions based on those categories without being explicitly cognizant of these groupings. Income sourcing is a type of mental accounting bias when people spend money differently based on how they came into possession of that money. This study focused on measuring various forms of income sourcing and their impact on spending behavior. In particular, this study analyzed how people make spending decisions when they have earned money in either a frivolous or a serious manner, and alternatively how people make spending decisions when they have either an …

The Capacity Of An Unfaltering Duress: America's Lost Love Stories, Seth Shimmelfarb-Wells

English Honors Papers

This thesis interrogates the imbrication between negative subjectivity and the fiction writing of Gayl Jones. In doing so, this work reimagines conceptions of intimate and interpersonal love, community, and retributive violence in the face of conditional (anti)Blackness. Through an engagement with contemporary scholars of Black Studies and with the help of the abundant archive of Black music, this project aims to prioritize, reproduce, and heed to Black Artistic registers of feeling that embrace duress, destruction, and madness. Through her literary performance, Jones reproduces and fabulates moments of Black social life that expand and simultaneously shatter our conception of a given …

The Misleading Successes Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In Environmental Policy, David E. Adelman, Amy Sinden Jan 2024

The Misleading Successes Of Cost-Benefit Analysis In Environmental Policy, David E. Adelman, Amy Sinden

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

This Article critically examines the rise of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) in environmental policy and the profound disconnect that has persisted between the actual practice of CBA and its normative grounding. Although CBA is now synonymous with rational decision-making in federal agencies, this has not always been the case. Views about CBA have evolved from bipartisan rejection in the 1970s, to partisan division (Republicans for, Democrats against) during the Reagan-Bush years, to a broad embrace of CBA in the mid-1990s, when centrist legal scholars were instrumental in crafting a new defense of CBA based on a mix of welfare economics and …

Independence Through Judicialization: The Politics Surrounding Administrative Adjudicators, 1929-1949, Lawrence J. Liu Jan 2024

Independence Through Judicialization: The Politics Surrounding Administrative Adjudicators, 1929-1949, Lawrence J. Liu

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

One front in today’s battle to define the scope of the administrative state concerns the authority, status, and future of its 10,000-plus administrative adjudicators. Decisions by federal courts and the executive branch to increase the dependence of administrative adjudicators on the executive have sparked strong reactions from observers, with many advocating for measures to increase adjudicator “independence.” But who should administrative adjudicators be independent of, which ought to be independent, and why?

Calls for administrative adjudicator independence are not new. This Article draws on primary documents produced by private actors, congressional decisionmakers, and federal executive agents to present a political …

The Clean Water Act’S Nurdle-Shaped Gap: Using The Cwa To Address Primary Microplastic Pollution, Taylor Hopkins Jan 2024

The Clean Water Act’S Nurdle-Shaped Gap: Using The Cwa To Address Primary Microplastic Pollution, Taylor Hopkins

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

The term “nurdles” may sound like a silly made-up word lifted from the pages of a children’s book, but unfortunately nurdles are all-too real, with trillions of these microplastics ending up in our oceans each year. Nurdles spill into the environment at every step along their supply chain, allowing them to end up in fish and on our plates. Despite the known danger nurdles pose to both wildlife and humans, they are virtually unregulated. In the absence of regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), some states and their citizens have begun trying to wrangle rogue nurdles, and hold nurdle …

Improving The Affirmative Disclosure Of Agency Legal Materials, Bernard W. Bell, Cary Coglianese, Michael Herz, Margaret B. Kwoka, Orly Lobel Jan 2024

Improving The Affirmative Disclosure Of Agency Legal Materials, Bernard W. Bell, Cary Coglianese, Michael Herz, Margaret B. Kwoka, Orly Lobel

Michigan Journal of Environmental & Administrative Law

It is axiomatic that in a democratic society the law must be broadly accessible. Administrative agencies produce a plethora of materials imposing legal obligations on commercial or individual actors in the private sector. Other materials bind the agencies themselves in ways that affect the rights or interests of private parties. Still other materials provide the public with information about how agencies interpret and apply the statutes and rules they administer, or how agencies seek to deploy their discretion or take other actions that can affect private individuals or organizations. This Article focuses on improving the public availability of all of …

Man In A Room: Methods Of Cinematic Identification & Repulsion In The Work Of Paul Schrader, Ingrid Dieckmann Jan 2024

Man In A Room: Methods Of Cinematic Identification & Repulsion In The Work Of Paul Schrader, Ingrid Dieckmann

Postgraduate

This project takes the form of practice-led research consisting of a short experimental film and an accompanying written exegesis. Together they investigate a specific form of cinematic identification associated with the films of Paul Schrader. Schrader’s films have developed a cinematic identification that oscillates between attraction and repulsion and in doing so complicates the spectator’s identification with the main character. To understand how Schrader’s films engender this form of identification the written component conducts an analysis of the cinematic techniques employed in his films, and a literature review of research. It uses the outcome of this research to then set …

The Kitchen In The Church Complex: Work And Sacred Space At ‘Ain El-Gedida, Dana Robinson Jan 2024

The Kitchen In The Church Complex: Work And Sacred Space At ‘Ain El-Gedida, Dana Robinson

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

The fourth-century church complex at ‘Ain el-Gedida, in the Dakhleh Oasis, provides a striking case study for the integration of kitchen work into social and religious space in late antiquity. Its unique features – both sociological and archaeological – reflect a dynamic, rough-and-tumble integration that both protects the sacred space of the nave and centres the productive labour of cooking. This article analyses the anteroom/kitchen B6 from the perspectives of space syntax, the communicative landscape of labour, and the sociology of graffiti. While it may have been designed as a transitional zone or service auxiliary for the primary public spaces …
