Feasibility Of Influencing Clinician Perceived Knowledge And Competence Of Human Trafficking Via A Continuing Education Workshop, Rachel Wakefield
Feasibility Of Influencing Clinician Perceived Knowledge And Competence Of Human Trafficking Via A Continuing Education Workshop, Rachel Wakefield
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Previous research has examined the complex mental and social health deficits of those who were trafficked that clinicians have to treat therapeutically (Litam, 2017; Pascual-Leone et al., 2017). Other research has explored how continuing education workshops often change the knowledge, competence, and attitudes of attendees to use more effective and evidenced techniques and skills (Neimeyer et al., 2009; Raghavan et al., 2008). However, there is a lack of understanding about how a complex topic, specifically treatment considerations of those who were trafficked, changes the knowledge and competence of continuing education workshop attendees. The purpose of the current study is to …
Image-Based Concrete Crack Detection Method Using The Median Absolute Deviation, Juan Camilo Avendaño, John Leander, Raid Karoumi
Image-Based Concrete Crack Detection Method Using The Median Absolute Deviation, Juan Camilo Avendaño, John Leander, Raid Karoumi
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper proposes an innovative approach for detecting and quantifying concrete cracks using an adaptive threshold method based on Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) in images. The technique applies limited pre-processing steps and then dynamically determines a threshold adapted for each sub-image depending on the greyscale distribution of the pixels, resulting in tailored crack segmentation. The edges of the crack are obtained using the Laplace edge detection method, and the width of the crack is obtained for each centreline point. The method’s performance is measured using the Probability of Detection (POD) curves as a function of the actual crack size, revealing …

Seunet-Trans: A Simple Yet Effective Unet-Transformer Model For Medical Image Segmentation, Tan-Hanh Pham, Xianqi Li, Kim-Doang Nguyen
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
Medical image segmentation plays a crucial role in modern clinical practice, enabling accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plans. Advancements in machine learning, particularly deep learning techniques, have significantly driven this progress. While Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) dominate the field, transformer-based models are emerging as powerful alternatives for computer vision tasks. However, most existing CNN-Transformer models underutilize the full potential of Transformers, often relegating them to assistant modules. To address this issue, we propose a novel and efficient UNet-Transformer (seUNet-Trans) model for medical image segmentation. The seUNet-Trans framework leverages a UNet architecture for feature extraction, generating rich representations from input images. …

Infinitely Many Solutions For Schrödinger–Poisson Systems And Schrödinger–Kirchhoff Equations, Shibo Liu
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
By applying Clark’s theorem as altered by Liu and Wang and the truncation method, we obtain a sequence of solutions for a Schrödinger–Poisson system (Formula presented.) with negative energy. A similar result is also obtained for the Schrödinger-Kirchhoff equation as follows: (Formula presented.). © 2024 by the author.
Microbes: Key Constituent Of Predator Risk Cues?, Jake R. Vargas
Microbes: Key Constituent Of Predator Risk Cues?, Jake R. Vargas
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Chemical cues emanating from predators can play a key role in aquatic predator-prey interactions and food webs. Understanding how prey respond to these risk cues is therefore critical for understanding the direct effects of predators on prey populations and their indirect effects on communities. To respond adaptively, prey must accurately assess the risk of predation associated with perceived chemical cues, an oft-documented phenomenon. However, little is known about how cues disperse, persist, and degrade, all of which could limit the adaptive responses of prey. Using laboratory-based observations of a well-studied predator cue-induced antipredator behavior by the marine gastropod Tegula funebralis …
Using Biological Parameters And Traditional Ecological Knowledge To Study The Status Of Spirinchus Starksi (Night Smelt) In Northern California, Z. Zenobia
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Night smelt spawns from central California to southeast Alaska, on the shore of sandy beach surf zones at night. This species is a vital part of regional food webs and, in California, is fished commercially primarily in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. It has cultural importance for dietary and subsistence needs to the Tribes across the coast, as well as inland. The objectives of this thesis are as follow: study the status of the population of night smelt in Humboldt and Del Norte counties by (A) comparing the abundance, length, weight, age, sex ratio, and timing of reproduction of the …
Movement-Based Interventions To Support Executive Function And Emotional Regulation In Autism Through The Potential Molecular Induction Of Neuroplasticity: A Systematic Review, Julie Dalmolen
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Autism Spectrum Disorder is associated with cognitive challenges that can hinder Executive Function. Disruptions in ER tend to create the largest barriers to social interactions with peers and can lead to disengagement from social activities and increased isolation which can impede learning and increase sedentary behaviors. Exercise interventions have been extensively studied in the autism population. While research suggests a variety of movement-based practices are effective in supporting metabolism, motor skills, stereotypical behaviors, and executive function, the impacts on emotional regulation are less clear, as are the types of exercise interventions that have the greatest effects. This systematic review aimed …
Climate Change, Policy Paralysis, And A Nuclear Waste Island? Exploring Perceptions Of Risk, Trust, And Community Agency In Navigating Uncertain Futures Facing Humboldt Bay's Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Site, Alexander Brown
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
Climate and coastal hazards threaten the long-term viability of indefinite in-situ nuclear waste storage in the U.S., especially at vulnerable “stranded” sites like Humboldt Bay, California. The national policy framework is fundamentally incompatible with emergent climate realities and does not adequately accommodate uncertainty, localized hazard conditions, and the sociocultural and political dynamics that manifest in diverse and contested public arenas. I interviewed 21 community-experts working at the intersection of climate change and nuclear waste, and co-facilitated three scenario planning workshops to gather insights on how to responsibly manage Humboldt Bay’s nuclear waste in a climate-altered world. Qualitative findings indicate variation …
Evaluating The Trojan Y Chromosome Strategy For The Removal Of Invasive Sacramento Pikeminnow From The Eel River, Ca, Alexander W. Juan
Evaluating The Trojan Y Chromosome Strategy For The Removal Of Invasive Sacramento Pikeminnow From The Eel River, Ca, Alexander W. Juan
Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects
The recent introduction and spread of Sacramento Pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus grandis) in Northern California’s Eel River Basin represents a significant threat and impediment to the recovery of several threatened native fish species. This study was undertaken to evaluate the Trojan Y Chromosome Strategy (TYC) for the extirpation of pikeminnow from the basin. TYC is a genetic biocontrol method that relies on the production and stocking of fish with YY sex chromosomes, which may be phenotypically male (YY male) or female (YY female). These YY fish produce all-male offspring when mating with their wild conspecifics and TYC can lead to …

The tool was developed by the FGM Data Hub, with input and feedback from The Girl Generation: Support to the Africa-Led Movement to End Female Genital Mutilation, for use by implementing partners to gather insights on the nature of changes occurring in the community as a result of their interventions. It can be used at community level, and also with other programme participants (e.g. students/ …
Lung Cancer Clustering By Identification Of Similarities And Discrepancies Of Dna Copy Numbers Using Maximal Information Coefficient, Nezamoddin N. Kachouie, Wejdan Deebani, Meshal Shutaywi, David C. Christiani
Lung Cancer Clustering By Identification Of Similarities And Discrepancies Of Dna Copy Numbers Using Maximal Information Coefficient, Nezamoddin N. Kachouie, Wejdan Deebani, Meshal Shutaywi, David C. Christiani
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
Lung cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer and the first cause of cancer related death for men and women in the United States. Early detection is essential as patient survival is not optimal and recurrence rate is high. Copy number (CN) changes in cancer populations have been broadly investigated to identify CN gains and deletions associated with the cancer. In this research, the similarities between cancer and paired peripheral blood samples are identified using maximal information coefficient (MIC) and the spatial locations with substantially high MIC scores in each chromosome are used for clustering analysis. The results showed that …
Spatiotemporal Bayesian Machine Learning For Estimation Of An Empirical Lower Bound For Probability Of Detection With Applications To Stationary Wildlife Photography, Mohamed Jaber, Robert D. Breininger, Farag Hamad, Nezamoddin N. Kachouie
Kachouie
Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications
An important parameter in the monitoring and surveillance systems is the probability of detection. Advanced wildlife monitoring systems rely on camera traps for stationary wildlife photography and have been broadly used for estimation of population size and density. Camera encounters are collected for estimation and management of a growing population size using spatial capture models. The accuracy of the estimated population size relies on the detection probability of the individual animals, and in turn depends on observed frequency of the animal encounters with the camera traps. Therefore, optimal coverage by the camera grid is essential for reliable estimation of the …
Council Of Canadians With Disabilities: Another Reminder To Resolve Cases On The Merits, Gerard J. Kennedy
Council Of Canadians With Disabilities: Another Reminder To Resolve Cases On The Merits, Gerard J. Kennedy
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
In British Columbia (Attorney General) v. Council of Canadians with Disabilities, Wagner C.J.C., for a unanimous Supreme Court of Canada, granted public interest standing to the Council of Canadians with Disabilities to challenge the constitutionality of provisions of British Columbia statutes that authorize physicians to subject patients with mental disabilities to psychiatric treatment without their consent or the consent of a substitute decision-maker. In many ways, the decision is simply a doubling-down on Cromwell J.’s unanimous decision a decade earlier in Canada (Attorney General) v. Downtown Eastside Sex Workers United Against Violence Society. This paper explains the holdings in Council …

From Rights To Justice: Perspectives On Access To Disability Justice In Britishcolumbia (Attorney General) V. Council Of Canadians With Disabilities, C. Tess Sheldon, Karen R. Spector, Ruby Dhand
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
Relying on the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in British Columbia (Attorney General) v. Council of Canadians with Disabilities as illustration, this paper aims to broaden perspectives about the availability of disability rights and disability justice. The first section considers the access to justice concerns that flow from the initial decision to deny standing to the Council of Canadians with Disabilities. Second, it addresses the barriers to accessing justice for persons with disabilities that grounded the case and the disproportionate impact of the impugned mental health legislation on equity-denied communities. The final section evaluates the persistence of procedural and substantive …
Legislative Choices In Using Section 33 And Judicial Scrutiny, Robert Leckey
Legislative Choices In Using Section 33 And Judicial Scrutiny, Robert Leckey
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
This paper highlights choices made by legislatures when they activate the notwithstanding clause in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Such choices relate to the extent of the rules or statutes protected from possible strike- down; to the Charter provisions from which protection is granted; and to timing, namely, whether the notwithstanding clause is used pre-emptively or after litigation. These choices may significantly affect voters’ knowledge of the effect on rights of a law shielded by the notwithstanding clause. Moreover, uses of the notwithstanding clause relate variably to theoretical justifications for this mechanism. For example, the view of the …
Un-Democratizing The City? Unwritten Constitutional Principles And Ontario’Sstrong Mayor Powers, Alexandra Flynn
Un-Democratizing The City? Unwritten Constitutional Principles And Ontario’Sstrong Mayor Powers, Alexandra Flynn
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
As both governments and administrative bodies, municipalities are complicated legal entities under Canadian law. The result is a contradictory medley of legislation and case law that has tried to make sense of this dual role of cities. This complex characterization of municipalities was acutely felt in 2022, when the Province of Ontario introduced legislation that allowed some mayors to exercise power with a one-third vote of city council. I suggest that this legislation sought to frame municipal legal status more squarely to that of an administrative body rather than a government. This paper examines the backdrop to this legislative change, …
