Population Burden Of Rare Infectious And Inflammatory Diseases Of The Heart, Meera Marji Jan 2024

Population Burden Of Rare Infectious And Inflammatory Diseases Of The Heart, Meera Marji

Theses and Dissertations--Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Rare diseases of the heart, such as infective endocarditis (IE), myocarditis, and pericarditis, have earned limited attention in cardiovascular research despite their potential for severe morbidity and mortality. Amidst the opioid crisis in the United States, there has been a notable increase in endocarditis hospitalizations among people who inject drugs. Kentucky, at the epicenter of the opioid epidemic, lacks available data on IE hospitalizations. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced unprecedented challenges to healthcare systems, influencing hospitalizations and healthcare utilization patterns. While trends before, during, and after the pandemic have been extensively studied for common cardiovascular diseases, such as heart …

A 3-Step, Open-Data, Ride-Hailing Ridership Model With Pricing Applications, Richard A. Mucci Jan 2024

A 3-Step, Open-Data, Ride-Hailing Ridership Model With Pricing Applications, Richard A. Mucci

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Researchers and practitioners studied the effects ride-hailing had in cities before the covid-19 pandemic. Previous research found ride-hailing to produce negative externalities, such as reducing transit ridership and increasing congestion in various cities. Since the pandemic, ride-hailing ridership has nearly recovered to pre-pandemic levels in Chicago. Ride-hailing ridership has grown steadily since the pandemic while a rider’s willingness to share their trip stagnated. Ride-hailing ridership nearly recovering to pre-covid levels in Chicago suggests that transportation planners, and policy makers, will need to continue assessing the impacts ride-hailing trips have in their cities.

Pickup and drop off locations in the Chicago …

Introduction To Trauma-Informed Counselor Education And Supervision (Tices) Framework, Isak Kim, Yoon Suh Moh, Charmayne R. Adams, Jaeyoung Kim Jan 2024

Introduction To Trauma-Informed Counselor Education And Supervision (Tices) Framework, Isak Kim, Yoon Suh Moh, Charmayne R. Adams, Jaeyoung Kim

Office of Health Promotion Scholarship

Many counselors in training may be susceptible to traumatization and/or retraumatization during their training process due to the elevated prevalence of their past trauma experience and the nature of their professional work involving exposure to trauma narratives in coursework and during fieldwork. Recognizing the growing need for a trauma-informed approach in training future helping professionals, including counselors-in-training, we present an overview of a framework called the Trauma-Informed Counselor Education and Supervision (TI-CES). This framework draws on assumptions and principles from trauma-informed care (TIC). Also, we address the applications of four key assumptions (i.e., Realize, Recognize, Respond, and …

On The Importance Of Listening To Crime Victims . . . Merciful And Otherwise, Paul Cassell Jan 2024

On The Importance Of Listening To Crime Victims . . . Merciful And Otherwise, Paul Cassell

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

What role should mercy play in the criminal justice system? While several of the other symposium’s articles here in the Texas Law Review argue for expanding mercy’s role, I write to raise a cautionary note. Expanding mercy could potentially conflict with another important feature of contemporary criminal justice: the expanding role of crime victims. Because considerations of mercy focus exclusively on the offender, greater attention to mercy necessarily means less attention to victims. This change in focus would be at odds with a broadly advancing crime victims’ movement in this country and, indeed, in many countries around the world. This …

Restructuring Undefined Assets: Valuation Of Stablecoins And Their Impact On The Bankruptcy Process, Olivia Woodmansee Jan 2024

Restructuring Undefined Assets: Valuation Of Stablecoins And Their Impact On The Bankruptcy Process, Olivia Woodmansee

American University Business Law Review

Difficulties with defining cryptocurrency have plagued federal agencies and courts since crypto’s creation. With the emergence of “crypto winter” in 2022 that saw many crypto-related ventures fail, bankruptcy courts have been challenged to address numerous novel legal issues surrounding crypto-assets. When looking to the Bankruptcy Code fails to provide answers, courts must look to definitions, agency regulations, and an analysis of cryptocurrency’s position in the market to determine its classification. This can quickly become muddled with the voluminous and seemingly conflicting sources that exist. One such issue emerges when courts attempt to determine how to classify a particular cryptocurrency: is …

Plausible To Proper: Clarifying Federal Circuit Jurisdiction Over Walker Process Appeals, Peter James Rozewicz Jan 2024

Plausible To Proper: Clarifying Federal Circuit Jurisdiction Over Walker Process Appeals, Peter James Rozewicz

American University Business Law Review

This Comment will describe what the Walker Process Doctrine is and explain the jurisdictional state of the Federal Circuit. Next, this Comment will examine the impact Gunn v. Minton has had on the scope of the Federal Circuit’s jurisdiction, the support and criticisms of Federal Circuit jurisdiction over Walker Process appeals, and how the Grable test plays into this issue. To do this, it will focus on how the jurisdictional analysis changed after Gunn and will discuss where each court’s argument for and against jurisdiction has merit and where it falters. To advance a solution, this Comment will recommend a …

Attitude Changes Among College Students Post-Pandemic, Alex J. Goncalo, Nicholas S. Zambrotta Jan 2024

Attitude Changes Among College Students Post-Pandemic, Alex J. Goncalo, Nicholas S. Zambrotta

Modern Psychological Studies

The COVID-19 pandemic forced students across the nation to attend school virtually and thus dramatically altered the college experience for many students. Stay at home mandates and loss of social interaction may have contributed to increased isolation and poor mental health. Although mandates have been lifted, and normal college life has resumed in most places, it is unknown if a lingering social impact was left on college students. Numerous studies provide evidence through in-depth examinations indicating altered mental health and psychological behavior of adults, specifically college aged individuals. The present study measured happiness, optimism, and psychological well-being in a sample …

A Neuroscience-Based Curriculum For Addiction Prevention For Fourth-Grade Students, Paola Andrea Benitez Jan 2024

A Neuroscience-Based Curriculum For Addiction Prevention For Fourth-Grade Students, Paola Andrea Benitez

Social Work Theses - Archive

Substance use is one of the main problems affecting adolescents and young adults. While the consumption of alcohol has decreased, the consumption of marijuana has increased rampantly due to youth's positive perception after being legalized in 24 states with no clear message of the many adverse effects this drug causes. Different approaches to prevention have been used throughout the years: scare-led tactics, socio-emotional learning skills, and neuroscience-based curriculums. Since substance use results from the conjunction of different biopsychosocial factors that lead to this relapsing brain disease, the solution should integrate different preventive solutions as well. Public policy, schools, social workers, …

Is The Virtual Therapy Experience A Sufficient Means For Person-Centered Therapy? A Systematic Review, Aaron Feibush Jan 2024

Is The Virtual Therapy Experience A Sufficient Means For Person-Centered Therapy? A Systematic Review, Aaron Feibush

Social Work Theses - Archive

Background: American psychologist Carl Rogers is considered the main originator of person-centered therapy (PCT), a psychotherapeutic approach which focuses on self-actualizing abilities of the client which emerge when engaged in an environment of three core conditions established by the therapist: unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence. Over the last several decades there have been thousands of studies that demonstrate support for these three core conditions as necessary features of effective therapy. However, with the emergence of psychotherapy being conducted via telehealth in the last several years, in particular since the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, it remains unknown …

Exploring The Process Of Seeking Informal Social Support For Intimate Partner Violence Among African Immigrants Residing In The United States, Ricka Olga Mammah Jan 2024

Exploring The Process Of Seeking Informal Social Support For Intimate Partner Violence Among African Immigrants Residing In The United States, Ricka Olga Mammah

Social Work Dissertations - Archive

Intimate partner violence against women is a pervasive global issue. For African immigrants in the United States, IPV continues to be a social problem, with many survivors seeking support from their informal networks. Informal networks refer to the social connections and relationships that individuals have outside of formal or professional settings, such as family members, friends, and acquaintances who provide emotional, practical, and social support. However, various cultural, religious, social, and legal barriers can make seeking informal social support for IPV challenging. To improve interventions designed to reach this vulnerable population, more inquiry is needed into how African immigrant survivors …

Out-Of-State Abortion On Company Dime: An Analysis Of State Legislation And Erisa, Erin Elizabeth Hanlon Jan 2024

Out-Of-State Abortion On Company Dime: An Analysis Of State Legislation And Erisa, Erin Elizabeth Hanlon

American University Business Law Review

This Note analyzes the various types of state abortion bans, focusing on those with aiding and abetting clauses. These bans impose civil liability for anyone, including companies providing abortion access benefits, who help a pregnant person gain access to abortion. Additionally, this Note analyzes federal legislation to determine if any retaliatory actions taken against companies violate federal law. This legislation includes the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (“ERISA”) which creates uniformity in insurance and benefits coverage by superseding any state law that references or relates to an ERISA plan. Many advocates believe that ERISA is a company’s greatest defense to …

The Validity Of Trade Restrictions On Artificial Intelligence Technology Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade's National Security Exception, Isabelle Brundieck Jan 2024

The Validity Of Trade Restrictions On Artificial Intelligence Technology Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade's National Security Exception, Isabelle Brundieck

American University International Law Review

This Comment argues that the U.S. restrictions on the export of semiconductors and other AI technology to China do not violate the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 (GATT 1994). Instead, such measures are legitimate expressions under GATT 1994’s Article XXI national security exception, which allows a country to break other articles within the agreement if necessary to protect the country’s essential national security interests. Given the national security risks associated with the rise of AI technology and the likelihood that such technology will be supplied to a military enterprise, the current trade restrictions qualify for the exception. However, …

Neglected Riches: Exposing China’S Selective Default On The Hukuang Railway Bonds And The Avenue For Financial Accountability Under The Successor Government Doctrine, William Krag Jan 2024

Neglected Riches: Exposing China’S Selective Default On The Hukuang Railway Bonds And The Avenue For Financial Accountability Under The Successor Government Doctrine, William Krag

American University International Law Review

The People’s Republic of China (“P.R.C.”) is in selective default for refusing to pay back private investors from the Hukuang Railway Bond default of 1911. The P.R.C. is the successor government to the Republic of China (“R.O.C.”) and Qing Dynasty. This Comment argues that though it is the successor government, the P.R.C. retains the legal rights and obligations of the former government and is the legal inheritor of these debts. This Comment takes this syllogism one step further and argues that the successor government doctrine is customary international law—applying the lessons from the Russian bond default of 1918. Finally, this …

Addressing Base Erosion: Impact Of The No Tax Breaks For Outsourcing Act On Tax Inversions And Profit Shifting, T. Scott Shogren Jan 2024

Addressing Base Erosion: Impact Of The No Tax Breaks For Outsourcing Act On Tax Inversions And Profit Shifting, T. Scott Shogren

American University Business Law Review

The modern landscape of international taxation presents complex challenges arising from cross-border transactions and diverse tax regimes. This Comment delves into the intricate world of tax inversions, a process whereby U.S. firms shift their corporate headquarters abroad, thereby exploiting different tax jurisdictions. The implications of tax inversions are significant, and some scholars estimate there are substantial global tax revenue losses.

This Comment examines the mechanics of tax inversions, analyzing the tools employed by multinational corporations to reduce their tax liabilities, such as debt concentration and earnings stripping. This Comment also explores legislative responses, including the No Tax Breaks for Outsourcing …

American University International Law Review

Part II of this Comment will explain the history of Mexico’s relationship with trade, as well as the finer details of the dispute resolution provisions of the USMCA that are of note. Part III will analyze two key violations of the USMCA by AMLO’s administration, contrasting the American response between the two and demonstrating the cycle of violations that has largely been created as a result of the failure to act. Part IV provides a simple recommendation to the U.S. administration for how to effectively halt its southern neighbor’s decline into unfettered populism that harms U.S. trade interests: employ the …

Amnesty Laws In Modern Peace Agreements: An Analysis Of The Northern Ireland Legacy Act Under International Law, Mckenzie Gallagher Jan 2024

Amnesty Laws In Modern Peace Agreements: An Analysis Of The Northern Ireland Legacy Act Under International Law, Mckenzie Gallagher

American University International Law Review

In September 2023, the United Kingdom passed the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act (“Legacy Act”), which grants amnesty to anyone who discloses information regarding murders, disappearances, or other unsolved crimes during the period known as “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland. The Legacy Act’s amnesty provision is expected to hinder the peace process in Northern Ireland and in turn, avert accountability for serious international crimes. This Comment considers to what extent the Legacy Act’s amnesty provision violates the Good Friday Agreement, the peace accord ending decades of conflict in Northern Ireland, the European Convention on Human Rights, the United …

Policing The Strait: How China’S Policing Of The Taiwan Strait Violates The U.N. Convention On The Law Of The Sea, Elizabeth C. Parker Jan 2024

Policing The Strait: How China’S Policing Of The Taiwan Strait Violates The U.N. Convention On The Law Of The Sea, Elizabeth C. Parker

American University International Law Review

As tensions continue to grow across the Taiwan Strait, China is using domestic maritime law to justify an expansion of police power in the international waters of the Taiwan Strait in violation of international law. This Comment will argue that the People’s Republic of China has violated the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (“UNCLOS”) by implementing non-resource-related police power in waters meant only for resource exploration and management. In comparing the language of China’s domestic maritime law with that of UNCLOS, this Comment will show that the People’s Republic of China has used domestic law to reinterpret …

“Show Me The Money”: The Sec’S Use Of Distribution As A Tool For Investor Protection, Coleman Gilkey Newton

American University Business Law Review

In Section II, this Comment will present a background on the relevant law of securities regulations by focusing on the SEC’s enforcement remedies, through various statutes, cases, and regulations. Section II further discusses the disgorgement and fair funds provisions that are crucial to the Commission’s distribution practices. Then, Section III shows how this background impacts SEC operations and presents a framework for the relationship between disgorgement and distribution. Finally, Section IV offers recommendations that would allow the SEC to continue to utilize disgorgement to ensure maximum distribution for harmed investors.

An Efficient And High-Throughput Method For The Evaluation Of Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Frozen Brain Samples After Traumatic Brain Injury., Hemendra J Vekaria, Olivia J. Kalimon, Paresh Prajapati, Gopal V. Velmurugan, Patrick G Sullivan

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Mitochondrial function analysis is a well-established method used in preclinical and clinical investigations to assess pathophysiological changes in various disease states, including traumatic brain injury (TBI). Although there are multiple approaches to assess mitochondrial function, one common method involves respirometric assays utilizing either Clark-type oxygen electrodes or fluorescent-based Seahorse analysis (Agilent). However, these functional analysis methods are typically limited to the availability of freshly isolated tissue samples due to the compromise of the electron transport chain (ETC) upon storage, caused by freeze-thaw-mediated breakdown of mitochondrial membranes. In this study, we propose and refine a method for evaluating electron flux through …
