[Un]Bound? A Critical Assessment Of The Nature Of Interim Measures Requests By The Human Rights Committee, Andrew D. Mitchell, Trina Malone
American University International Law Review
This article critically examines the nature and legal force of interim measures requests (IMRs) issued by the Human Rights Committee (HR Committee) in response to communications received under the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR-OP1). Despite the lack of express provisions in the Covenant or the Optional Protocol regarding the power of the HR Committee to issue IMRs or the obligation of States to comply with them, the HR Committee has established its own Rules of Procedure to issue purportedly binding IMRs in certain circumstances. This article is the first thorough examination of whether …

Achieving Effective Procurement During A Global Crisis: A Study Of The Uncitral Model Law On Public Procurement And The Wto Agreement On Government Procurement, Dmitri Goubarkov
American University International Law Review
The global nature of the COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for public procurement systems around the world. Governments everywhere faced an immense pressure to facilitate the rapid procurement of supplies and services needed to support overburdened health and social care systems. Speed and flexibility were needed to address the shortages of protective personal equipment, distribution of ventilators, and increased demand for medications, all of which required governments to forego traditional public procurement methods. Governments had to balance the underlying principles of their procurement systems—namely, competition, integrity, and transparency—against urgency, and do so in a way that does not erode public …

Background/Significance: Social inequity is a large problem within the healthcare system, especially in third-world countries, like Indonesia. Poor access to healthcare and screening protocols can contribute to delayed diagnoses, poorer outcomes, and increasing mortality rates. Purpose: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of lung cancer screening protocols in Indonesia compared to California and help identify potential barriers and factors in lung cancer screening in both regions. This will later help reform policy interventions and decisions to improve community access. Methods: The study will be divided into two portions using a mixed method approach. A Consistent Treaty Interpretation By The Inter-American Court Of Human Rights In Light Of Corpus Juris, Liliana E. Popa
Denver Journal of International Law & Policy
International human rights courts’ use of external sources of interpretation is a key subject of disagreement for critics and opponents of these courts’ interpretative work. This Article provides a comprehensive review of cases decided by one of the most contested human rights courts: the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR). It evaluates the quality of interpretation through the prism of international courts’ duty to render consistent treaty interpretation, a topic seldom analyzed in scholarship. It explores how and to what extent the IACtHR uses external sources that are comprised in corpus juris to improve the effectiveness and consistency of its …

Can Phytoremediation-Induced Changes In The Microbiome Improve Saline/Sodic Soil And Plant Health?, Achal Neupane, Duncan Jukubowski, Douglas Fiedler, Liping Gu, Sharon A. Clay, David E. Clay, Shin-Yi Marzano
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
Increasing soil salinity and/or sodicity is an expanding problem in the Northern Great Plains (NGP) of North America. This study investigated the impact of phytoremediation on the soil microbiome and if changes, in turn, had positive or negative effects on plant establishment. Amplicon sequencing and gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer analysis compared root metabolites and microbial composition of bulk vs. rhizosphere soils between two soil types (productive and saline/sodic). Beta-diversity analysis indicated that bacterial and fungal communities from both the bulk and rhizosphere soils from each soil type clustered separately, indicating dissimilar microbial composition. Plant species also influenced both root-associated bacterial and …

Stop Horsing Around: A Case Of Cenbuterol Toxicity, Justin Sanchez, Mark Cheneler, Alexandra Villacres
North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
Introduction: Clenbuterol is a medication that is relatively unknown outside of the equestrian and bodybuilding worlds. It acts as a sympathomimetic compound with beta-2 agonism and can cause tachycardia and bronchodilation. It is utilized for this bronchodilation as a means of improving equestrian performance. Its sympathomimetic effects were utilized in the bodybuilding community as a weight loss medication by increasing catabolic metabolism. Here we present a case of intentional clenbuterol toxicity for weight loss. Case presentation: A 34-year-old woman with past medical history of migraines presented to the emergency department for evaluation of palpitations and an EKG showed sinus …

Improving Documentation Of Patients' Physical Activity In The Outpatient Setting, Jordan Price, Syed Abbas, William Bass, Rigoberto Hernandez, Abdullah Shuaib, Michele L. Mccarroll, Lindsay Porter
North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
Background: There is vast data on the health benefits of physical activity (PA) and the serious health consequences that are associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Research suggests that physicians who have meaningful conversations about exercise with their patients can be effective at increasing their patients' PA. In order to measure the effects of these discussions, the clinician must be able to document the baseline and subsequent PA of their patients. Our project seeks to improve the assessment and documentation of patient PA. Methods: Using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) quality improvement methodology, a multidisciplinary team was created to identify ways to improve documentation …
