Berta Szeps-Zuckerkandl: The Forgotten Woman In The Center Of Fin De Siècle Vienna, Riley Peterson Jan 2024

Berta Szeps-Zuckerkandl: The Forgotten Woman In The Center Of Fin De Siècle Vienna, Riley Peterson

International ResearchScape Journal

The scholarship surrounding fin de siècle Vienna contains many cultural and intellectual cornerstones that are lauded even to this day. All participating in the Viennese coffeehouse culture of the time, artists like Gustav Klimt, musicians like Gustav Mahler, psychologists like Sigmund Freud, and authors like Arthur Schnitzler shaped their respective disciplines significantly. The social network for how these intellectuals and many others interacted is very complex. This study analyzes and maps the interactions of dozens of individuals from early 20th-century Vienna to pinpoint the social center of this culture. Intriguingly, the often-overlooked Berta Szeps-Zuckerkandl—whom leading scholar Carl Schorske only mentioned …

Intraparty Conflict And The Separation Of Powers, Gregory A. Elinson Jan 2024

Intraparty Conflict And The Separation Of Powers, Gregory A. Elinson

College of Law Faculty Publications

Intent on reconciling constitutional theory to political reality, public law scholars have in recent decades dismissed as naïve both the logic of the Constitution’s design set forth in The Federalist and the Framers’ dismal view of political parties. They argue that contrary to the Madisonian vision competition between our two national political parties undergirds the horizontal and vertical separation of powers. But, in calling attention to the fights that take place between political parties, they underestimate the constitutional significance of the conflicts that persist within them. Reconsidering the law and theory of the separation of powers with attention to intraparty …

A review of FROM PARCHMENT TO DUST: THE CASE FOR CONSTITUTIONAL SKEPTICISM. Louis Michael Seidman.* New York: The New Press. 2021. Pp. viii + 311. $27.99 (Hardcover).

You’d be forgiven for assuming that Louis Michael Seidman’s estimation of the U.S. Constitution had improved over the course of the last decade. In his 2012 book, On Constitutional Disobedience, he asked whether anyone should “feel obligated to obey [a] deeply flawed, eighteenth-century document,” and answered (emphatically) “No.”2 Now he has published From Parchment to Dust: The Case for Constitutional Skepticism. At first blush, skepticism seems rather different and less radical than disobedience. …

The Successful Façade: The Powers Of Postmodernism Within The Comedy, Abigail Muller Jan 2024

The Successful Façade: The Powers Of Postmodernism Within The Comedy, Abigail Muller

Schultz-Werth Award Papers

The comedy has always been an incredibly versatile genre: although it certainly contains rote story formulas meant to provide lighthearted entertainment, the comedy can also reveal interesting perspectives pertaining to darker underlying issues, allowing audiences to process these hypocrisies as from behind a screen of safety. Such is the case of the movies The King of Comedy (1982), Wag the Dog (1997), Bowfinger (1999), and Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), all of which can be classified as comedic escapades yet fail to conceal their corrupted underbellies from a prying viewer. The four films, despite occurring in wildly different worlds and containing …

Supplementing The Record: The Life And Career Of Judge Edmund L. Palmieri, Todd C. Peppers, Bridget Tainer-Parkins

Scholarly Articles

For approximately ninety years, lower federal court judges have hired law clerks to process the work of the courts. While the law clerks typically go on to successful careers as attorneys, law professors, government officials, and judges, it is rare that the former apprentices become so famous that their mentors are lost in their oversized shadows. This is the case, however, for former federal district court judge Edmund L. Palmieri. A highly respected jurist who sat in the Southern District of New York for over three decades, Palmieri has seemingly become the answer to the following trivial pursuit question: “What …

2024 Faculty Bibliography

This article critically analyzes Meta, a social technology platform, focusing on its thematic characteristics as a ritual platform. Drawing on Carey’s ritual model and incorporating Couldry’s media ritual framework, the study examines Meta’s distinct features and their implications for ritual practices regarding religion. By examining Meta’s ritual forms and their role in naturalizing sacred rituals, the analysis sheds light on the power dynamics and implications of Meta’s ritualization process within the broader context of its social technology affordances. It also provides some recommendations for a scholarly appreciation of Meta’s ritual relationship with religious communities.

"A Gratifying Divergence": Immigrant Settlement And The National Narrative In Willa Cather's My Ántonia, Peter Kvidera

2024 Faculty Bibliography

This essay examines Cather's 1923 essay "Nebraska: The End of the First Cycle" and her 1918 novel My Ántonia to analyze her representation of the immigrant figure that simultaneously defines the region (Nebraska) and enriches the story of America. The essay contextualizes Cather's writing within the statutes of nineteenth-century homesteading legislation, which allowed Nebraska to be settled and the nation to expand westward. It first considers opportunities and challenges afforded by homesteading, and then discusses Cather's use of immigrant settlement and the cycles of storytelling it produces to revise monolithic interpretations of the national narrative.

Studies performed in North America, Africa, and South America have led to the isolation of four new species of Kastovskya, a filamentous cyanobacterial genus that before this manuscript had only one species, Kastovskya adunca from Chile. Kastovskya nitens and K. viridissima were isolated from soils on San Nicolas Island, K. sahariensis was isolated from hypolithic habitats from the Sahara Desert in Algeria, and K. circularithylacoides was isolated from hypolithic habitats in Chile. The molecular analyses are corroborated by morphological data, morphometric analysis, and ecological and biogeographical considerations for robust polyphasic descriptions of all taxa. The peculiar transatlantic distribution of this …

Adolescent Mental Health In The Twenty-First Century, Arthur Maerlander, Patricia Gail Bray Jan 2024

Adolescent Mental Health In The Twenty-First Century, Arthur Maerlander, Patricia Gail Bray

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Conclusion

Parents do not suddenly relinquish medical decision-making to their children and are a vital part of a process construed within the framework of consent and confidentiality laws. In the transition period from childhood to adulthood, adolescents develop unique healthcare needs and concerns at the very time they are gaining autonomy from their parents. Adolescents progress from being recipients of decisions about their care to gradually becoming active participants in their healthcare and emerge as a primary partner in medical decision-making. Building a strong therapeutic alliance with young people can help them become responsible healthcare decision-makers.

Yet while “healthcare,” including …

Leading A Multi-Generational Workforce, Samuel B. Mellert

M.S. in Leadership

Retention of employees and cross-generational conflict are issues that have gained tremendous attention in the past five years and can negatively or positively impact organizations of all sizes and within all industries. Literature suggests that the formative events, values, and needs from employers of the different generational cohorts currently comprising the workforce are widely varying. As such, a “one size fits all” approach to leadership, human resources, and organizational policies with regard to retention and motivation will no longer suffice. This research project investigated the literature about the generational cohorts and how they got here, what they believe in, and …

Barnett, Christina L. Master, Abigail C. Bretzin, Douglas J. Wiebe, Ivy League-Big Ten Epidemiology Of Concussion Study Investigators

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Background

Growing interest has motivated recent studies to examine differences in recovery after sportrelated concussion (SRC) by sex. However, heterogeneity in study design, participants, and recovery outcomes has led to mixed findings. Further work is needed to evaluate potential differences by sex and to investigate the role of related characteristics, such as sport contact-level, in recovery timelines. This study aimed to investigate whether concussion recovery trajectories differ by sex, considering a priori clinical and demographic covariates, and accounting for the sequence of recovery outcomes. Our secondary question was whether sport contact-level modifies the relationship between sex and time to outcomes. …
