Introduction

There is limited evidence as to the effect of sex on the outcomes of patients admitted for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who have a concomitant diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We aimed to determine if there are differences in the outcomes between males and females in these patient populations.

Methods

Data were obtained from the National Inpatient Sample database and patients were selected using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision (ICD-9 and -10) codes. Hospitalizations for patients with CKD who had STEMI from 2012 to 2020 were included. The primary …

Outcomes For An Intergenerational Technology Program: A Pre-Post With Waitlist Control Study, Meaghan Colvin

Open Access Master's Theses

The quickly growing population of older adults in the United States, combined with an increasingly digital society post-pandemic, has illuminated the digital divide in recent years. The digital divide contributes to social isolation and, therefore, decreased quality of life in older adults, and intergenerational technology programming has demonstrated the potential to bridge this equity gap and keep older adults involved and productive in their communities and larger society. To expand the current literature on intergenerational programming, this study utilized a waitlist control design to strengthen the results gleaned from the University of Rhode Island (URI) Engaging Generations (eGen) Cyber-Seniors program …

Monetary Incentive Delay Task Response In A Diverse Sample Of Adolescents: Advancing Health Promotion In This Age Group, Emily K. Carter

Open Access Master's Theses

The adolescent brain is becoming increasingly recognized as an important and distinct developmental period. Adolescence is also a period that has seen a recent increase in sexually transmitted infection (STI); those between ages 15-24 account for roughly 25% of the United States’ population but account for about 50% of annual STI incidents. Current behavioral-only intervention approaches have been limited in their capacity to help advance adolescent health behavior; translational approaches that utilize information about the neurological underpinnings of sexual health decision making offer the opportunity to obtain novel information about young people. The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)-based monetary incentive …

Share: A Framework For Secondary Qualitative Data Analysis, Shawn Jordan, Holly Matusovich, Jennifer Case, Lisa Benson, David Delaine, Rachel Kajfez, Susan Lord, Marie Paretti, Edward Young, Yevgeniya V. Zastavker

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

Although secondary analysis of qualitative data is not a new research approach, it is not yet commonly used in engineering education research. Heaton (2008, p. 34) describes secondary qualitative data analysis (SDA) as involving “the re-use of pre-existing qualitative data derived from previous research studies.” Within this broad definition, one form of SDA that is especially uncommon in engineering education research (EER) is the practice in which researchers who were not part of the original project team work with qualitative data they did not help collect and potentially even apply theories and analytic lenses that were not part …

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, academia has attempted to be more open and accepting of diverse identities to better serve the campus community. To this end, there has been increased programming to focus on inclusiveness of marginalized identities such as LGBTQQIA+. However, much of this programming has centered on the student experience and neglected tenure-seeking faculty, who are generally used to carrying out such programming rather than benefiting from it. The purpose of this study was to examine the lived experiences of tenure-seeking counselor education faculty during their tenure-seeking process. Using consensual qualitative research (CQR) as an analytical framework, the authors found …

Epigenetics And Character Virtue Development, David S. Moore Jan 2024

Epigenetics And Character Virtue Development, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Current understandings of epigenetics offer some insights into the developmental origins of character virtues. Research on epigenetics has demonstrated that phenotypes depend on both genomic and non-genomic information for their development, and such is true for the development of character virtues as well. This conclusion offers significant support for the Developmental Systems perspective. Although researchers have not yet studied the role of molecular epigenetic factors in the development of character, the field of behavioral epigenetics has revealed how such factors contribute to psychological and other behavioral phenotypes in general. In particular, behavioral epigenetics research can highlight the plasticity of human …

Are Academia And Industry Listening To Each Other? A Citation Analysis Of Ux Research Methods Resources, Abigail Bakke, Leonard Dibono

English Department Publications

Technical and Professional Communication (TPC) has been facing concerns of viability, in both its relationship with industry and its ability to build a relevant and valid body of research. TPC’s disconnection with industry may be reflected in its relationship to UX as well, despite both fields’ shared values. To better understand how TPC and User Experience (UX) are relating to each other, we conducted a citation analysis of a sample of SIGDOC papers and a sample of Nielsen Norman Group (NN/g) practitioner articles focused on research methods. The SIGDOC papers tended to cite TPC sources, while the NN/g articles cited …

Divorcing Your Opm: Moving From An Outsourced Online Program Management Model To A New Online Program Management Model: A Qualitative Descriptive Case Study, Andrea Carroll-Glover

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The demand for flexible online learning models, fueled by technological advancements and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has necessitated creative solutions to support millions of students enrolled in online programs. Higher Education leaders, faced with this growing demand and lacking expertise in online learning, have turned to outsourced business models, such as for-profit online program management partnerships (OPM), to attract, retain, and support new non-traditional student populations. The decision to outsource has been driven by competitive pressures, a desire for speed to market, a lack of initial capital, the desire to shift risk, and a lack of internal expertise). Institutions …

Divorcing Values: A Quantitative Study Of Religious K-12 Leaders In The Public Sphere, Christine Collins-Otto

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This cross-sectional quantitative study examined the relationship between public K-12 leaders’ levels of religiosity, job satisfaction, intention to leave, and perceived organizational fit when required to implement policies incongruent with their personal values. This study also explored whether experiences of values incongruence were related to job satisfaction, intention to leave, and perceived organizational fit. The leaders’ level of religiosity and experiences with values incongruence served as the independent variables to compare with the three dependent variables: job satisfaction, intention to leave, and perceived organizational fit. The person-environment fit theory provided the overarching conceptual framework (Kristof, 1996). Participants were recruited from …

A Phenomenological Case Study Of Key Characteristics Of A Successful Presidential Transition, Jennifer Marie Niska

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is significant research on the president's role, but there is a lack of research on presidential transitions and direct experiences during those transitions. With the growing number of presidential transitions happening as the tenure of presidential tenure decreases, the importance of well-run presidential transitions becomes even more essential to an institution. The study's goal was to learn from the lived experiences of those who went through a successful presidential transition and provide a richer view of presidential transitions to all involved. The findings show the key characteristics for a successful president or chief leader transition include (a) having a …
