Telework Washington - Needs Assessment Summary, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)

Intervention Summaries

Exploration of Needs

The Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD) worked with the Washington Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) to conduct a needs assessment. A variety of information was explored to learn about the workforce and the agency’s child welfare workforce practices, including 1) recruitment, hiring, and retention metrics and processes, 2) organizational culture and climate, and 3) other workforce processes and initiatives, such as onboarding, mentoring, supervision, performance management, and employee recognition. More specifically, four major types of information were considered:

  1. objective data from various agency databases and reports;
  2. subjective perceptions of staff and supervisors, …

Telework Washington - Intervention Overview, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development (Qic-Wd)

Intervention Summaries

The Washington Department of Children, Youth & Families (DCYF) Child Welfare Field Operations (CWYO) telework program was developed by reviewing policies, practices, experiences and research distilled from materials produced by numerous federal and state agencies (for example, www.telework.gov). (At the time of intervention development, the QIC-WD was unable to identify child welfare agencies with formal telework policies and protocols.) In addition, the experiences of approximately 30 Field Operations Intake workers who participated in a DCYF 2018 telework pilot also contributed to developing the telework program. Lastly, the project’s Implementation Team informed the feasibility of a telework program for DCYF …

Social Media As Fragile State, Caroline A. Haythornthwaite, Philip Mai, Anatoliy Gruzd Jan 2024

Social Media As Fragile State, Caroline A. Haythornthwaite, Philip Mai, Anatoliy Gruzd

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Social media platforms are grappling with how to respond to hate speech, misinformation, and political manipulation in ways that address human rights, free speech, and equality. As independent ‘states’, they are enacting their own rules of conduct, deriving their own ‘laws’, convening their own extrajudicial self regulatory institutions, and making their own interpretations and enactments of human rights. With the rise of social states such as Facebook, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, how fragile are they in their ability to achieve outcomes of fair, equitable and consistent application of their own laws? Could an assessment of the fragility of …

Integrating External Controls By Regression Calibration For Genome-Wide Association Study, Lirong Zhu, Shijia Yan, Xuewei Cao, Shuanglin Zhang, Qiuying Sha

Michigan Tech Publications

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully revealed many disease-associated genetic variants. For a case-control study, the adequate power of an association test can be achieved with a large sample size, although genotyping large samples is expensive. A cost-effective strategy to boost power is to integrate external control samples with publicly available genotyped data. However, the naive integration of external controls may inflate the type I error rates if ignoring the systematic differences (batch effect) between studies, such as the differences in sequencing platforms, genotype-calling procedures, population stratification, and so forth. To account for the batch effect, we propose an approach …

How Can Smes Effectively Leverage Blockchain? A Roadmap And Five-Step Approach, Naeem Bajwa, Thomas Tudor, Joe T. Felan, Otmar E. Varela Dr. Jan 2024

How Can Smes Effectively Leverage Blockchain? A Roadmap And Five-Step Approach, Naeem Bajwa, Thomas Tudor, Joe T. Felan, Otmar E. Varela Dr.

Pennsylvania Economic Review

This paper presents blockchain technology and its applications, demonstrating how small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can easily engage in blockchain initiatives. We start with an introduction to blockchain technology and its business applications. For many small enterprises, engaging in blockchain transactions remains relatively novel. Nevertheless, emerging trends indicate that large enterprises are incorporating smaller business partners, broadening the application scope across the supply chain. We demonstrate how this technology is revolutionizing both supply chain and contract management. We examine how Smart Contracts can streamline complexity and enhance business transaction transparency, facilitating more efficient and effective operations. SMEs can secure strategic …

Consent Searches And Underestimation Of Compliance: Robustness To Type Of Search, Consequences Of Search, And Demographic Sample, Roseanna Sommers, Vanessa K. Bohns Jan 2024

Consent Searches And Underestimation Of Compliance: Robustness To Type Of Search, Consequences Of Search, And Demographic Sample, Roseanna Sommers, Vanessa K. Bohns

Law & Economics Working Papers

Most police searches today are authorized by citizens’ consent, rather than probable cause or reasonable suspicion. The main constitutional limitation on so-called “consent searches” is the voluntariness test: whether a reasonable person would have felt free to refuse the officer’s request to conduct the search. We investigate whether this legal inquiry is subject to a systematic bias whereby uninvolved decision-makers overstate the voluntariness of consent and underestimate the psychological pressure individuals feel to comply. We find evidence for a robust bias extending to requests, tasks, and populations that have not been examined previously. Across three pre-registered experiments, we approached participants …

Microsoft Access To Sqlite Database Migration For Existing Forest Management Software: Methods And Considerations, Drue Kathryn Lindstrom Jan 2024

Microsoft Access To Sqlite Database Migration For Existing Forest Management Software: Methods And Considerations, Drue Kathryn Lindstrom

Masters in GIS Practicum Reports

Bioregional Inventory Originated Simulation Under Management (BioSum) is software from the US Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program. It is a complex analysis framework that models and evaluates forest management treatments across multi-decade timeframes. Originally written to work with Microsoft Access databases, BioSum is migrating to the use of SQLite as its database engine. The final module of BioSum, Treatment Optimizer, is the first one to be converted so the changes can be implemented incrementally. This practicum report outlines a workflow for converting the database engine of an existing program from Microsoft Access to SQLite with the example …

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease that can cause hydrocele and its associated stigma, loss of economic productivity, and depression. Hydrocele surgery is an essential part of LF morbidity management but can be difficult for national programs to implement. To improve access to hydrocele surgeries in Côte d'Ivoire, we provided a WHO-certified surgical training for six surgical teams from five health districts in Côte d'Ivoire. We then evaluated the surgical outcomes and assessed the impact of hydrocele surgery on quality of life of hydrocelectomy patients. Preoperative and operative records were reviewed to describe baseline hydrocele characteristics and operative …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

A key component to achieving the global goal of elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) is the availability of appropriate tools for disease mapping, monitoring, and surveillance. However, the development of these tools for a neglected disease such as LF can be a challenge. The lack of a commercial market and low familiarity with these diseases leave little incentive for diagnostic manufacturers to invest in this space. The Filarial Test Strip (FTS) development story provides a case study on how a multi-stakeholder, public-private partnership model facilitated the development, evaluation, and introduction of a new monitoring and surveillance tool for LF. This …

Machine Learning-Based Indoor Relative Humidity And Co2 Identification Using A Piecewise Autoregressive Exogenous Model: A Cob Prototype Study, Mohammed Hichem Benzaama, Karim Touati, Yassine El Mendili, Malo Le Guern, François Streiff, Steve Goodhew

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The population of developed nations spends a significant amount of time indoors, and the implications of poor indoor air quality (IAQ) on human health are substantial. Many premature deaths attributed to exposure to indoor air pollutants result from diseases exacerbated by poor indoor air. CO2, one of these pollutants, is the most prevalent and often serves as an indicator of IAQ. Indoor CO2 concentrations can be significantly higher than outdoor levels due to human respiration and activity. The primary objective of this research was to numerically investigate the indoor relative humidity and CO2 in cob buildings …

Exploring The Relationships Between Psychological Variables And Loot Box Engagement, Part 2: Exploratory Analyses Of Complex Relationships, Stuart Gordon Spicer, James Close, Laura Louise Nicklin, Maria Uther, Ben Whalley, Chris Fullwood, Jonathan Parke, J Lloyd, H Lloyd

Peninsula Medical School

In a pre-registered survey linked to this paper (Exploring the relationships between psychological variables and loot box engagement, part 1: pre-registered hypotheses), we confirmed bivariate associations between engagement with loot boxes (purchasable randomized rewards in video games) and measures of problem gambling, problem video gaming, impulsivity, gambling cognitions, experiences of game-related ‘flow’, psychological distress and reduced wellbeing. However, these variables have complex relationships, so to gain further insights, we analysed the dataset (1495 gamers who purchase loot boxes and 1223 purchasers of non-randomized content) in a series of Bayesian mixed-effects multiple regressions with a zero-inflation component. The results challenge some …
