Cancer, a leading global cause of mortality, arises from intricate interactions between genetic and environmental factors, fueling uncontrolled cell growth. Amidst existing treatment limitations, vitamins have emerged as promising candidates for cancer prevention and treatment. This review focuses on Vitamins A, C, E, and D because of their protective activity against various types of cancer. They are essential as human metabolic coenzymes. Through a critical exploration of preclinical and clinical studies via PubMed and Google Scholar, the impact of these vitamins on cancer therapy was analyzed, unraveling their complicated mechanisms of action. Interestingly, vitamins impact immune function, antioxidant defense, inflammation, …

Matter Of Williams V. New York City Hous. Auth.

All Decisions

The Appellate Division upheld the NYCHA Hearing Officer's denial of petitioner's application to vacate a default judgment for chronic rent delinquency and failure to verify income. The tenant failed to convince the court he had a valid reason for missing the hearing or a strong defense to the underlying charges. This case highlights key legal points: 1) Tenants in eviction proceedings must attend hearings or present valid excuses for absence; 2) Default judgments stand if tenants lack justification for non-appearance and weak defenses; and 3) Courts can lift stays on eviction proceedings when initial rulings are grounded in reason. This …

"Hyperlocal" Career Pathway Programs In New Hampshire: Collaborating To Support Youth At The Secondary/Postsecondary Transition, Jayson Seaman

Carsey Publications

College costs and persistent workforce shortages have prompted educators, policymakers, and employers to shift the conversation on the transition from high school from a narrow “college for all” emphasis to a broader “postsecondary education” and “career pathways” perspective. The timing of this shift coincides with current and anticipated workforce needs; by 2032, New Hampshire will have 197,000 positions available across its top 80 occupations, with labor force growth projected to fill only 6,100 of those jobs.

Some commentators argue that broadening options to include career and technical education, certificates, and 2-year degrees is essential for realizing equity gains. Successfully building …

Mendelian randomization has been widely used to assess the causal effect of a heritable exposure variable on an outcome of interest, using genetic variants as instrumental variables. In practice, data on the exposure variable can be incomplete due to high cost of measurement and technical limits of detection. In this paper, we propose a valid and efficient method to handle both unmeasured and undetectable values of the exposure variable in one-sample Mendelian randomization analysis with individual-level data. We estimate the causal effect of the exposure variable on the outcome using maximum likelihood estimation and develop an expectation maximization algorithm for …

Exploring Tefl Research Methods Courses In Iran: A Path To Research Synthesis Pedagogy, Mohammad Amini Farsani Dr, Mojtaba Asaie

The Qualitative Report

There has been inadequate investigation of research pedagogy in applied linguistics, despite the significance of research reform in the field. As such, we examined the status of Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) research pedagogy in postgraduate classes in Iran. We described and evaluated 28 research methods (RM) courses in terms of objectives, content, and assessment in Iranian universities. We employed a qualitative content analysis of RM syllabi, utilizing a mixture of inductive and deductive coding. Our results revealed that among the Iranian research instructors whose syllabi we examined, there is a common approach to delivering research methods courses. …

The Qualitative Report

In this article, we share insights regarding an arts-based research project where carers of people with dementia conveyed their experiences in cloth. Carers face high rates of mental ill health and burnout, while forming a largely undervalued and unrecognised workforce. Through this project, carers’ knowledge was valued and amplified using an innovative methodology – craftivism. During a series of five workshops in 2021, a small group of carers, researchers and artists gathered online to develop an exhibition of craftivist textile works. They evoked the complexity of their makers’ journeys supporting loved ones at the end of life, finding joy and …

We integrate moral norms and stewardship identity into the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to predict the use of non-lead ammunition in the California condor recovery zone of southwestern Utah. Data were collected from licensed hunters via an online survey. Structural equation models of the TPB without and with the moral norms and stewardship identity constructs were compared to evaluate the utility of integrating these constructs into the TPB. Moral norms did have a significant direct influence on hunters’ behavioral intentions. Both moral norms and stewardship identity had significant indirect influences on behavioral intentions via the core constructs of the …

Emerging Stroke Risk Factors: A Focus On Infectious And Environmental Determinants, Sajid Hameed, Nurose Karim, Mohammad Wasay, Narayanaswamy Venketasubramanian

Section of Neurology

This review focuses on emerging risk factors for stroke, including air pollution and climate change, gut microbiota, high altitude, and systemic infection. Up to 14% of all stroke-associated mortality is attributed to air pollution and is more pronounced in developing countries. Fine particulate matter and other air pollutants contribute to an increased stroke risk, and this risk appears to increase with higher levels and duration of exposure. Short term air pollution exposure has also been reported to increase the stroke risk. The gut microbiota is a complex ecosystem of bacteria and other microorganisms that reside in the digestive system and …

Chimera Baryon Spectrum In The Sp(4) Completion Of Composite Higgs Models, Ho Hsiao, Ed Bennett, Deog Ki Hong, Jong-Wan Lee, C. -J. David Lin, Biagio Lucini, Maurizio Piai, Davide Vadacchino

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

In strongly coupled gauge theories that serve as completions of composite Higgs models, the fermionic bound states formed by fermions (hyperquarks) transforming in different representations, called chimera baryons, could serve as top partners, by embedding of the Standard Model appropriately. We report our results on the spectrum of chimera baryons in the Sp(4) gauge theory with hyperquarks transforming in fundamental and two-index antisymmetric representations. For this study, we adopt the quenched approximation. We investigate the mass hierarchy between the lightest chimera baryons with different quantum numbers, as a function of the lattice parameters. Inspired by baryon chiral effective field theory, …

Sea Ice-Ocean Coupling During Heinrich Stadials In The Atlantic–Arctic Gateway, Naima El Bani Altuna, Mohamed M. Ezat, Lukas Smik, Francesco Muschitiello, Simon T. Belt, Jochen Knies, Tine L. Rasmussen

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The variability of Arctic sea-ice during abrupt stadial-interstadial shifts in the last glacial period remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the millennial-scale relationship, with a focus on Heinrich Stadials (HS), between sea-ice cover and bottom water temperature (BWT) during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 3 and 2 (64–13 ka) in the Fram Strait using new molecular sea ice biomarker data and published benthic foraminiferal BWT records. Widespread spring sea-ice cover (SpSIC) dominated the studied interval, especially in mid-late MIS 3 (45–29 ka). Yet, warm interstadials were characterized by relatively more open-ocean conditions compared to cold stadials. At the transition between a …

Yap Mechanotransduction Under Cyclic Mechanical Stretch Loading For Mesenchymal Stem Cell Osteogenesis Is Regulated By Rock, Eunju Kim, Brandon D. Riehl, Tasneem Bouzid, Ruiguo Yang, Bin Duan, Henry J. Donahue, Jung Yul Lim

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

While yes-associated protein (YAP) is now recognized as a potent mechanosensitive transcriptional regulator to affect cell growth and differentiation including the osteogenic transcription of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), most studies have reported the YAP mechanosensing of static mechanophysical cues such as substrate stiffness. We tested MSC response to dynamic loading, i.e., cyclic mechanical stretching, and assessed YAP mechanosensing and resultant MSC osteogenesis. We showed that cyclic stretching at 10% strain and 1 Hz frequency triggered YAP nuclear import in MSCs. YAP phosphorylation at S127 and S397, which is required for YAP cytoplasmic retention, was suppressed by cyclic stretch. We also …

Applications Of Bioinformatics For Exploring The Genomic Landscape Of Cancer And Characterizing Treatment Response For Precision Oncology, Sharon Freshour

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

While the integration of next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics into cancer research has been immeasurably useful for advancing the field, there are still many gaps in understanding the genomic landscape of cancer due to the complexity of cancer development and evolution. Likewise, there are still many challenges for identifying and applying effective therapeutics for cancer treatment. Thus, there remains a need to continue characterizing the genomic landscape of cancer, to explore the evolution of cancer, and to understand how tumors respond to treatment. The projects described in this dissertation cover several applications of next-generation sequencing, bioinformatic analysis, and database resources for …

The supratrochlear artery (STA) demonstrates anatomical variability that impacts facial reconstruction with a paramedian forehead flap. STA branching patterns and the distance to the midline have been reported, but the STA pedicle has not been characterized. Our aim was to triangulate the STA pedicle relative to known anatomical landmarks and identify a danger zone to aid surgeons in creating viable tissue flaps. The upper facial region was dissected bilaterally on 38 cadaveric donors. Measurements from the supraorbital neurovascular bundle, orbital rim, and medial canthus to the STA pedicle were collected. Data were tallied and statistically analyzed. Measurement means, range, and …

Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare and deadly malignancy. Therapeutic advances have been stifled by a poor understanding of disease biology. Specifically, the immune microenvironment is an underexplored component in PSCC and the activity of immune checkpoint inhibitors observed in a subset of patients suggests immune escape may play an important role in tumorigenesis. Herein, we explored for the first time the immune microenvironment of 57 men with PSCC and how it varies with the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and across tumor stages using multiplex immunofluorescence of key immune cell markers. We observed an increase in …
