Ecological Diversification In An Adaptive Radiation Of Plants: The Role Of De Novo Mutation And Introgression, Benjamin Stone, Carolyn A. Wessinger
Ecological Diversification In An Adaptive Radiation Of Plants: The Role Of De Novo Mutation And Introgression, Benjamin Stone, Carolyn A. Wessinger
Faculty Publications
Adaptive radiations are characterized by rapid ecological diversification and speciation events, leading to fuzzy species boundaries between ecologically differentiated species. Adaptive radiations are therefore key systems for understanding how species are formed and maintained, including the role of de novo mutations versus preexisting variation in ecological adaptation and the genome-wide consequences of hybridization events. For example, adaptive introgression, where beneficial alleles are transferred between lineages through hybridization, may fuel diversification in adaptive radiations and facilitate adaptation to new environments. In this study, we employed whole-genome resequencing data to investigate the evolutionary origin of hummingbird-pollinated flowers and to characterize genome-wide patterns …

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a significant public health concern, specially characterized by a complex pattern of abnormal neural activity and functional connectivity. It is often associated with a broad spectrum of short-term and long-term cognitive and behavioral symptoms including memory dysfunction, headache, and balance difficulties. Furthermore, there is evidence that oxidative stress significantly contributes to these symptoms and neurophysiological changes. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) on brain function and chronic symptoms in mTBI patients. Fifty patients diagnosed with chronic mTBI participated in this study. They were categorized into two groups …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis virus (VEEV) may enter the central nervous system (CNS) within olfactory sensory neurons (OSN) that originate in the nasal cavity after intranasal exposure. While it is known that VEEV has evolved several mechanisms to inhibit type I interferon (IFN) signaling within infected cells, whether this inhibits virologic control during neuroinvasion along OSN has not been studied.
METHODS: We utilized an established murine model of intranasal infection with VEEV and a repository of scRNAseq data from IFN-treated OSN to assess the cellular targets and IFN signaling responses after VEEV exposure.
RESULTS: We found that immature OSN, which …

Educating For Capability And Preparing For Practice: Integrating Theory And Skills, Sally Hanks, Tom Gale, Harry Carter, Robert Johnson
Peninsula Medical School
Capability is the ability to perform clinical skills in ever-changing real world contexts, adapting to challenges and integrating technical and non-technical skills and competencies, for example, cannulating an uncooperative patient at night. Going beyond teaching competency and ensuring capability is imperative, as recommended by the national outcomes for medical graduates. A course on intravenous cannulation was developed with e-learning modules and high-fidelity complex simulation scenarios, aiming to promote capability in practice. The course delivered an intravenous cannulation e-learning package between two practical simulations to 10 final-year medical students. The hybrid simulation design consisted of an actor with a bespoke cannulation …

PURPOSE: Brain metastases are associated with high morbidity and are often resistant to immune checkpoint inhibitors. We evaluated whether CDK4/6 inhibitor (CDKi) abemaciclib can sensitize intracranial tumors to programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibition in mouse models of melanoma and breast cancer brain metastasis.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Treatment response was evaluated in vivo using immunocompetent mouse models of brain metastasis bearing concurrent intracranial and extracranial tumors. Treatment effect on intracranial and extracranial tumor-immune microenvironments (TIME) was evaluated using immunofluorescence, multiplex immunoassays, high-parameter flow cytometry, and T-cell receptor profiling. Mice with humanized immune systems were evaluated using flow cytometry to study …

Although dual HER2 inhibition has shown promising clinical activity in patients with RAS wild-type HER2-positive metastatic colorectal cancer, predictive biomarkers of response/resistance are less well characterized. Activating HER2/RTK/MAPK genomic alterations appears to blunt the clinical benefit of dual anti-HER2 therapy and may hold a potential albeit partial role in patient selection. See related article by Randon et al., p. 436.

Comparison Of Three Rapid Diagnostic Tests For Bloodstream Infections Using Benefit-Risk Evaluation Framework (Bed-Frame), Richard D Smith, Min Zhan, Shanshan Zhang, Surbhi Leekha, Anthony Harris, Scott Evans, Robert K Ernst
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for bloodstream infections have the potential to reduce time to appropriate antimicrobial therapy and improve patient outcomes. Previously, an in-house, lipid-based, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) method, Fast Lipid Analysis Technique (FLAT MS), has shown promise as a rapid pathogen identification method. In this study, FLAT MS for direct from blood culture identification was evaluated and compared to FDA-cleared identification methods using the Benefit-risk Evaluation Framework (BED-FRAME) analysis. FLAT MS was evaluated and compared to Bruker Sepsityper and bioMérieux BioFire FilmArray BCID2 using results from a previous study. For this study, 301 …
An Analysis Of Fathers’ And Toddlers’ Behaviors During Shared Book Reading, Caitlin Marie Kelly
An Analysis Of Fathers’ And Toddlers’ Behaviors During Shared Book Reading, Caitlin Marie Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
Shared book reading interactions between parents and their children have been studied to draw correlations to a child’s vocabulary growth, language development, mathematical scores, and socioemotional skills. However, there is a lack of research regarding fathers’ and toddlers’ engagement and behaviors during shared book reading interactions. The current study investigated and analyzed father and toddler interactions during shared book reading. The data was collected from a larger longitudinal study. Seven father-child dyads participated in the study (Mage = 35 years; range = 30-43 years). The children included four males and two females, and up to two videos were collected for …

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The aesthetics of existence is at the core of Foucault's later ethical genealogy, in which the superiority of the free subject in the self-construction over power can establish the superiority of the ethical subject over the moral subject and that of the governance of the self over the governance of others. Agamben's concept of the “form-of-life” in Part IV of the Homo Sacer is developed from his reflections upon Foucault, which suggests that Foucault's aesthetics of existence does not attain what he expects because of its association with tekhne or power. Therefore, Agamben critically inherits Foucault's thought from an ontological …
