Cooperating Music Teachers And The Edtpa: Negotiating The Demands Of Mentoring Student Teachers In The Face Of A State Mandated Performance-Based Assessment, Deborah Alane Cunningham

Dissertations - ALL

This qualitative case study examined how cooperating music teachers navigated mentoring student teachers during implementation of the Educative Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA), a state-mandated performance-based assessment required for initial teacher certification in New York State from 2014–2022. Initial data analysis suggested utilizing Roegman and Kolman’s (2019) cascading, colliding, and mediating framework to better understand the experiences of the participants, fifteen cooperating music teachers who hosted student teachers from a large private university in the Northeastern United States. Participants represented diverse contexts (elementary through secondary, instrumental, vocal, and general music) with an average of twenty years of experience. Data were collected …

Metaphors In Agile Discourse: A Corpus-Based Analysis Of The Agile Manifesto And The Scrum Guide, Kadidra Mccloud Hurst May 2026

Metaphors In Agile Discourse: A Corpus-Based Analysis Of The Agile Manifesto And The Scrum Guide, Kadidra Mccloud Hurst

Dissertations - ALL

The focus of this thesis is examining how the Agile method of software development, and the Scrum-based approach in particular, are conceptually framed through metaphor. The basis of the analysis are the core texts for this method and approach: Beck et al.’s (2001) Manifesto for Agile Software Development, commonly called the Agile Manifesto; and the Scrum Alliance’s (2010) Scrum Guide and Schwaber and Sutherland’s (2020) The Scrum Guide: The Definitive Guide to Scrum: The Rules of the Game, two editions of a document commonly called the Scrum Guide. Foundational Agile texts play a key role in shaping how Agile and …

Identity-Based Philanthropy In Higher Education: Investigating The Information Contexts Of Black Greek Letter Organization Collective Giving, Rachel Elizabeth Vassel May 2026

Identity-Based Philanthropy In Higher Education: Investigating The Information Contexts Of Black Greek Letter Organization Collective Giving, Rachel Elizabeth Vassel

Dissertations - ALL

There is a need to increase philanthropic donations at Predominately White Institutions (PWIs) to remain competitive and meet increasing operational costs. Diverse and underrepresented alumni of these institutions are a growing constituency of potential donors who are not always cultivated through the traditional fundraising pipeline and efforts. To address the need to increase institutional donations, it is incumbent upon advancement operations in higher education to consider incorporating identity and culturally based strategies as part of their cultivation efforts. Building upon identity-based philanthropy theories, particularly Drezner’s Philanthropic Mirroring Framework, I extend prior work in this space by examining the information contexts …

“The Fluid Archive” Innovating The Past, Protecting The Future (Virtual Reality And Cultural Preservation), Umar Bashir May 2026

“The Fluid Archive” Innovating The Past, Protecting The Future (Virtual Reality And Cultural Preservation), Umar Bashir

Theses - ALL

ABSTRACT This thesis repositions cultural preservation as an experiential and interpretive practice rather than a purely documentary one. Centered on selected Mughal-era monuments of the Walled City of Lahore—structures increasingly affected by environmental decay and urban transformation—it investigates how the sensory and atmospheric dimensions of heritage can persist beyond material deterioration. Rather than reconstructing these sites through strict architectural fidelity, the project proposes The Fluid Archive, an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environment that prioritizes embodied experience, spatial perception, and memory-driven reconstruction. Acknowledging that history is a constructed narration of the past, the project engages digital technologies as active agents in …

Rewriting The Script: Representations Of Virginity In Teen Dramedies (2019-2025), Sophia Elizabeth Condemi May 2026

Rewriting The Script: Representations Of Virginity In Teen Dramedies (2019-2025), Sophia Elizabeth Condemi

Theses - ALL

Over the past three decades, youth sexual activity has steadily declined, with members of Generation Z (those born between 1997 to 2012) reporting lower rates of sexual activity than previous generations, and in many cases, delaying their first sexual experiences. This shift raises the question of whether contemporary teen television reflects these changes in sexual behavior. This thesis examines ten popular teen dramedies that aired between 2019 and 2025 on streaming video services to see whether new scripts surrounding virginity emerge or if traditional narratives persist. Using qualitative textual analysis guided by sexual script theory and relational dialectics theory, the …

The Impact Of Stress On Selective Attention Among College Student Athletes, Jayla K. Mcgaffin May 2026

The Impact Of Stress On Selective Attention Among College Student Athletes, Jayla K. Mcgaffin

Honors Theses

Student athletes face unique stressors from balancing academic and athletic demands (Lopes Dos Santos et al., 2020), which may deplete cognitive resources and impair focus. The present study examined the relationship between perceived stress and selective attention among college student athletes. Stress was conceptualized as the interaction between external pressures and individual coping responses (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Twenty undergraduate student athletes from the University of New Haven completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-14) and a computerized Flanker task measuring selective attention, but only eighteen were used in the final correlation analysis. It was hypothesized that higher levels of perceived …

Developmental Ecological Psychology Meets Organicist Biology: The Example Of The Ecological Self, Catherine Read May 2026

Developmental Ecological Psychology Meets Organicist Biology: The Example Of The Ecological Self, Catherine Read

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

In this paper we outline an ecological-organicist theoretical framework to understand human development. The ecological approach to development (Developmental Ecological Psychology, DEP) places the organism at the center and has a mutualist theoretical framework with an epistemic foundation in direct perception. While research in this tradition has paid much attention to specific developmental questions at a young age (such as perceptual learning, affordances, and action coordination), less effort has gone into the discussion of theoretical issues of overall development at the level of organism-environment mutuality. Meanwhile in biology, a new emphasis on the organism as an explanatory concept and level …

Relevance Of Mario Perniola’S Philosophy Of Transit (Transiting) To Ecopsychological Modi, George Conesa May 2026

Relevance Of Mario Perniola’S Philosophy Of Transit (Transiting) To Ecopsychological Modi, George Conesa

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

Mario Perniola’s construct of transit is here examined with an eye toward its implications to ecopsychological discourse and practices that include psychological and philosophical notions of authentic “mobility” and active exploration during person-natural spaces affiliations. As in most qualitatively revealing ideas of “relations,” authentic “mobility” and active exploration include instances of confrontation, disorientation, fusion, confusion, biomechanical insights, animalization, totemism, disgust, etc. As a means to sharpen our focus, the insights of writer Enea Bianchi on Perniola’s writing are very useful and will be referred to, in particular, while reimagining our perception of space as “a deep world made of …

Co-Constituted Mandala-Making In Nature: A Trauma-Sensitive Field Protocol For Investigating Attention, Regulation, And Relational Orientation Toward Place, Merve Kurt May 2026

Co-Constituted Mandala-Making In Nature: A Trauma-Sensitive Field Protocol For Investigating Attention, Regulation, And Relational Orientation Toward Place, Merve Kurt

The International Journal of Ecopsychology (IJE)

This article presents a theoretically grounded field protocol for mandala-making in natural settings using only already-fallen materials and intentional dissolution. The mandala is treated as an anthropogenic cultural form whose structural features, including radial organisation around a centre, bounded containment, and provisional totality, are shown to be analytically consequential for the process-level shifts the protocol seeks to foreground. Drawing on posthumanism, new materialism, Buddhist psychology, and ecopsychology, the article conceptualises this process as co-constituted mandala-making, a descriptive term for a field in which human attention and choice operate alongside material and ecological constraints and affordances, without attributing volition to nonhuman …

Examining How Disability Resource Professionals In Higher Education Enact Whiteness In Maintaining Power And Privileged Structures, Paula Possenti-Perez

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation examines how Whiteness operates with the delivery of disability-related accommodations on US college campuses. The research in this study focused on three questions: (a) How do disability resource professionals individually begin to make sense of their Whiteness personally? (b) How do disability resource professionals recognize and account for their White racialized frame and Whiteness in their individual professional judgment and decision-making? (c) How do disability resource professionals describe the ways Whiteness as ideology manifests in the field of disability resources, through its professional norms and systemic practices across disability resources in higher education? Twelve White disability resource professionals, …

The Predictive Validity Of Casual Dating Advice For Early-Stage Romantic Relationship Outcomes, Jayda Patrice Felder May 2026

The Predictive Validity Of Casual Dating Advice For Early-Stage Romantic Relationship Outcomes, Jayda Patrice Felder

Dissertations - ALL

For years, relationship scientists have advocated for more research on casual dating, which can refer to the period of time between a first date and coupling among a romantic dyad, as well as the general period of time an individual is on the dating market evaluating potential partners. Though much is known about established romantic relationships, casual dating and early relationship development remain understudied. To that end, there are many ongoing debates among laypeople about casual dating advice that should be followed (or abandoned) in order to make the best partner choice and experience the best relationship outcomes, yet empirical …

Three Essays On Trust In American Society, Devin Caramma May 2026

Three Essays On Trust In American Society, Devin Caramma

Dissertations - ALL

Social and political trust are paramount for healthy, democratic functioning, with social trust mattering for cooperative behavior or political action and political trust weighing more heavily for policy compliance, democratic satisfaction, and political participation. Across the last half century, trusting attitudes between citizens and towards government declined precipitously, but this decline has been less dramatic among partisans. What drives the relationship between partisan identification and social trust? Does perceived value congruence with a group cause social trust to increase? Do objective signals of ambient air pollution affect trust in state government? These questions are interrogated and tested across three papers …

High Courts During Democratic Decline, Alice Cho Timken May 2026

High Courts During Democratic Decline, Alice Cho Timken

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation is a collection of three papers that explore the roles that high courts play during democratic decline and the incentives and conditions that explain them. Each uses a different methodological approach to address this central question. Paper 1. “The Political Foundations of Independent Judicial Review Revisited: Modeling Political Insurance” Episodes of democratic decline routinely feature reductions in judicial independence. Which mechanisms connect these phenomena? I model political insurance theory to explore how the internal workings of a foundational theory may help explain the nature of judicial independence during threats to democracy. I find that political competition must be …

Systemic Employment Discrimination And Class Actions: The Extent Of Structural Litigation In The United States And Brazil, Ricardo Jose Macedo De Britto Pereira May 2026

Systemic Employment Discrimination And Class Actions: The Extent Of Structural Litigation In The United States And Brazil, Ricardo Jose Macedo De Britto Pereira

Dissertations - ALL

This dissertation explores class actions against systemic employment discrimination in the United States and Brazil, adopting a collective perspective that strengthens the enforcement of rights. The study also examines whether affirmative action can be implemented as a remedy without dividing groups or triggering resistance in political scenarios unfavorable to inclusive and diverse work environments. The focus is on institutional responses addressing structures of discrimination through procedural tools that advance reforms and prevent setbacks. The dissertation develops a political and legal theoretical background of collective rights, identifying unequal structures in society and pathways for reform, and examining employers’ authority, labor segmentation, …

Examining The Formation, Participation Dynamics, And Leadership Of Cross-Sectoral And Intergovernmental Networks For Collaborative Watershed Management, Nicholas Oesterling May 2026

Examining The Formation, Participation Dynamics, And Leadership Of Cross-Sectoral And Intergovernmental Networks For Collaborative Watershed Management, Nicholas Oesterling

Dissertations - ALL

Public policies are increasingly relying on collaborative networks of governmental and non-governmental actors to address complex problems for the achievement of policy goals. Public administrators, therefore, are now often facing critical questions of how to collaborate across boundaries (e.g., sector, jurisdiction) in networks for policy implementation. In this dissertation, I address unresolved questions regarding these networks for cross-boundary (i.e., cross-sector, intergovernmental) collaboration. Specifically, this dissertation’s three essays tackle questions regarding how external factors may influence when and where networks form, how voluntary participation occurs within networks over time, and how network leadership may shape network composition and purpose. The first …

Ecofeminist Entanglements, Rachel Benbasat May 2026

Ecofeminist Entanglements, Rachel Benbasat

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

I discuss the environmental philosophical framework known as Ecofeminism and its approaches to challenging patriarchy. The discussion includes its conceptualization of women and nature focused on women’s potential to produce life as well as conceptions of power dynamics related to the aversion of women in society and history. I discuss ecological activism associated with women and its relation to different forms of Ecofeminism. I compare Ecofeminism to other approaches to feminism and to other ecological philosophies, such as deep ecology. I conclude by sharing the present status of Ecofeminism and where it may be heading, addressing questions about how it …
