Database: A Poetry Collection, Lara Dominique D. Solante

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Poets wield their pens to respond to various societal or cultural stimuli—including politics, art, science, and more. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is an exponential development that has become a leading topic of discussion. This project, titled Database, is a collection of poems that interrogates the tensions that exist between humanity and technology through the use of modern imagery, such as robots and virtual reality. These poems also examine the once distinct markers of humanity that characterized classical poetry, including emotion and sensory experiences, and reframes them within a contemporary context, giving technology and artificial consciousness a voice. Although this collection …

The Role Of Cultural Contexts Within Marketing Strategies Of Experiential Tourism Across Countries That Rely Heavily On Tourism, Maren Bronson May 2026

The Role Of Cultural Contexts Within Marketing Strategies Of Experiential Tourism Across Countries That Rely Heavily On Tourism, Maren Bronson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Developing a cultural mindset requires awareness of one’s cultural background and recognizing that culture provides a broader framework for understanding the world around us (e.g. values, behaviors, and expectations). At the same time, tourism continues to expand globally, contributing approximately 10% of global GDP in 2025, serving as a major driver of economic growth for destination countries (WTTC, 2025). As destinations increasingly rely on international visitors, tourism marketing must satisfy the needs and wants of international tourists. This thesis reviews the literature on culture, marketing, and tourism to  examine how cultural contexts shape experiential tourism marketing strategies in tourism-dependent countries, …

A Comparative Study Of Haiti And The Dominican Republic, Hannah Merritt May 2026

A Comparative Study Of Haiti And The Dominican Republic, Hannah Merritt

Program in Community Action (PICA)

Situated on the same Caribbean island, Haiti is currently the poorest country in the western hemisphere with a negative GDP growth rate, while the Dominican Republic boasts one of the fastest rates of GDP growth in Latin America. Currently, the Haitian capital Port-Au-Prince is controlled by local gangs, with civilians being forced out of their homes and massacred. The Dominican government has voiced that it feels as though cries for help to the international community have been ignored, and Dominican taxpayers are left to bear the brunt of a failing state next door. Back in 2024, the Dominican government was …

Ethical Participation In An Unethical System: Partnering With The New London Homeless Hospitality Center, Lucy Koester May 2026

Ethical Participation In An Unethical System: Partnering With The New London Homeless Hospitality Center, Lucy Koester

Program in Community Action (PICA)

How can volunteers engage meaningfully and ethically within a system that does not always center the voices of the people it serves? This Senior Integrative Project (SIP) explores the College’s long-term partnership with the New London Homeless Hospitality Center (NLHHC), and how campus-community partnerships (CCPs) can build resilient and civically minded societies. Drawing on experiences volunteering and developing collaborative projects with the NLHHC, it reflects on the challenges and possibilities for improving the guests’ experiences. Using a sociological approach, this paper analyzes how organizations like the NLHHC are products of bureaucratic systems, and emphasize the importance of centering community voices …

A Timely Warning: Clock Drawing Errors In Young Adults And The Long-Term Validity Of Cognitive Screens, Alastair Smith, Sarah Salo May 2026

A Timely Warning: Clock Drawing Errors In Young Adults And The Long-Term Validity Of Cognitive Screens, Alastair Smith, Sarah Salo

School of Psychology

Objective: The clock drawing test (CDT) assesses multiple cognitive functions, including visuospatial construction and executive planning, and it is a core feature of many cognitive screens. Recent evidence indicates that young adults may experience difficulties producing an accurate response and we present a closer examination of generational differences in CDT performance in the context of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), where a notable failure rate was observed in our young adult respondents. Method: A total of 165 younger adults (18–35 years) and 53 healthy older adults (65–93 years) completed the MoCA as part of a larger study. CDT performance was …

Theatrical Roles: An Introduction To Theatre, Gibson A. Cima May 2026

Theatrical Roles: An Introduction To Theatre, Gibson A. Cima

Faculty Books & Book Chapters

Theatrical Roles: An Introduction to Theatre is an open educational resource (OER) created by Gibson Alessandro Cima for Introduction to Theatre at Northern Illinois University. Published through the Humanities LibreTexts platform under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, the textbook is designed as a free, accessible alternative to traditional introductory theatre textbooks.
Rather than organizing theatre history around a conventional Western canon, the OER approaches theatre through the major collaborative roles involved in production: playwright, director, performer, designer/technician, and audience. The structure emphasizes theatre as a collective human practice rather than a linear history of great men and canonical …

Firm-Level Tournament Incentives And Social Decoupling: Evidence From The United States, Mohamed Khalifa, Ahmed Aboud, Soad Kh Ali May 2026

Firm-Level Tournament Incentives And Social Decoupling: Evidence From The United States, Mohamed Khalifa, Ahmed Aboud, Soad Kh Ali

All Works

This study investigates whether tournament-based executive incentives exacerbate social decoupling. Using 4468 firm-year observations from S&P 500 firms between 2010 and 2022, we find that stronger tournament incentives are associated with higher levels of social decoupling. This association is stronger in firms without ESG-linked compensation, those facing higher product market competition, and those with greater board co-option. Additional analyses indicate that increased agency costs constitute an important channel. The analysis employs firm and year fixed-effects regressions and is supplemented by alternative decoupling measures, change-on-change analysis, instrumental variable estimation, and a Heckman two-stage model. This study advances the literature on executive …

Energy-Efficiency Optimization And Comparison For Irs-Assisted Bidirectional Relay And Direct Transmissions, Caixia Cai, Jiayao Zhang, Fuli Zhong, Han Hai, Yayu Yang, Sunil Chinnadurai, Anwer Al-Dulaimi May 2026

Energy-Efficiency Optimization And Comparison For Irs-Assisted Bidirectional Relay And Direct Transmissions, Caixia Cai, Jiayao Zhang, Fuli Zhong, Han Hai, Yayu Yang, Sunil Chinnadurai, Anwer Al-Dulaimi

All Works

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising technique for achieving high-transmission rate and low-power consumption transmission to meet the requirements of future beyond 5G and 6G communication. In this paper, we optimize and compare the energy-efficiency (EE) of IRS-assisted bidirectional relay transmission (BRT) and bidirectional direct transmission (BDT). In specific, we firstly consider and give the IRS-assisted BRT and BDT models. Then, we give the analyses of signal transmission models and EE for both IRS-assisted BRT and BDT. In addition, to optimize the EE, we give the joint optimization problems for both IRS-assisted BRT and BDT, which incorporate …

Elevated Plasma Cholesterol Improves Sepsis Outcome By Promoting Hepatic Metabolic Reprogramming, Qian Wang, Jianyao Xue, Ling Guo, Dan Hao, Misa Ito, Rianna Reese, Bin Huang, Congqing Wu, Xiang An Li

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Background – Sepsis is a life-threatening condition with high mortality and limited therapeutic options. This study investigated the association between plasma cholesterol levels and sepsis survival and explored the mechanisms by which elevated cholesterol confers protection. Methods – We analyzed 2, 787 sepsis patients from the MIMIC-IV database, comparing cholesterol levels between 28-day survivors and non-survivors and assessing mortality risk using multivariable Cox regression. To test causality, C57BL/6J mice were fed either a high-cholesterol diet (HCD) or a regular diet (RD) before cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Results – Survivors had significantly higher cholesterol than non-survivors (median 135 vs. 126 …

The Gatekeepers: School Personnel And The Identification Of Twice-Exceptional Black Girls, Stephanie L. Addison-Fontaine May 2026

The Gatekeepers: School Personnel And The Identification Of Twice-Exceptional Black Girls, Stephanie L. Addison-Fontaine

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative research study examined the discourse of school personnel in the twice-exceptional (2E; Kaufman, 2018) student identification process (Gilman & Peters, 2018). It used disability critical race studies (DisCrit; Annamma et al., 2016) to investigate how educators’ discourse signals the inclusion or exclusion of 2E Black girls. Critical discourse analysis (Gee, 2014) was used to understand the ways their intersectional identities of race, ability, and gender impact their identification in schools. It highlighted the identification barriers for 2E Black girls and conceptualized a normative 2E construct (N.A.T.E.) aligned with the dominant institutional discourse of twice-exceptionality. Policy shifts are recommended …

Improving Human Visual Search: Enhancing Lung Cancer Nodule Detection In Medical Images, Christopher Khajira May 2026

Improving Human Visual Search: Enhancing Lung Cancer Nodule Detection In Medical Images, Christopher Khajira

Masters Theses

Human visual search involves the identification of relevant signals within information-rich environments, which is a fundamental problem in visual perception. While detection accuracy and response time are commonly used to evaluate performance in visual search, these measures do not reveal the underlying cognitive and computational structure that produces observable behavior. A key challenge lies in distinguishing between competing processing architectures, particularly in complex visual domains where different models can produce similar behavioral outcomes. This study addresses this challenge by developing a computational experimental framework for analyzing visual search behavior using System Factorial Technology (SFT). The experimental framework integrates naturalistic medical …

Missional Hospitality: A Contextualization Of God’S Hospitable Mission For New Lisbon Christian Church, Jonathan Willmore May 2026

Missional Hospitality: A Contextualization Of God’S Hospitable Mission For New Lisbon Christian Church, Jonathan Willmore

DMin Project Theses

The town of New Lisbon, originally called Jamestown, has been home to Restoration Movement churches. The first congregation began in 1839, not long after the town’s official incorporation and renaming as New Lisbon. It unfortunately died out in the decades that followed, and not much is known about its history. The second is called New Lisbon Christian Church (NLCC) and was planted in 1893.1 The records indicate that NLCC changed Senior Ministers approximately every three years, until the 1970s, when a pastor stayed at New Lisbon for nine years. That minister was the longest tenured until the most recent one …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Initiated Post-Discharge Phone Call In The Prevention Of Hospital Readmissions For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Sierra Kane May 2026

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Initiated Post-Discharge Phone Call In The Prevention Of Hospital Readmissions For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Sierra Kane

Doctoral Projects

Background: Hospital readmissions are widely recognized as a key metric of quality care, reinforced by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) incentive programs (U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2025). Despite these incentives, achieving a meaningful reduction of readmissions remains a challenge, especially for chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), where readmission is fueled by gaps in medication management, patient confidence in symptom management, and access to timely follow-up care. Purpose: Evaluate the impact of a nurse-initiated post-discharge telephone outreach, conducted at 48 hours, by the outpatient endocrinology clinic, on 7- and 30-day readmission rates for …
