Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVE: Optimal timing of ventriculoperitoneal shunting (VPS) relative to cranioplasty (CP) after decompressive craniectomy remains controversial. VPS may be performed before, during, or after CP, but no consensus exists on which sequence minimizes complications. We performed a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare the safety profiles of pre-, simultaneous, and post-CP shunting.
METHODS: We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL from inception to October 2025. Eligible studies directly compared at least two timing strategies in patients undergoing both CP and VPS. Primary outcomes included overall complications, reoperation, infection, and intradural bleeding. Secondary outcomes included shunt-related and other procedure-specific adverse events. …

In this holdover-licensee proceeding, the landlord sought possession of a rent-stabilized apartment. The tenant asserted succession rights as a non-traditional family member of the deceased prior tenant. Despite the absence of documentary evidence like joint bank accounts or wills, the court found the tenant proved the requisite family member relationship and co-residency through compelling testimony from four disinterested witnesses. The court determined that two years of signing lease renewals in the prior tenant's name after his death did not prejudice the landlord, especially given a 2023 amendment to the Public Housing Law. The court dismissed the proceeding with prejudice, finding …

The Civil Court dismissed landlord's nonpayment petition on two grounds. First, petitioner, as a landlord of a tenant with a Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher, failed to serve the required VAWA notice and certification form with the predicate rent demand as required by 24 CFR § 5.2005(a). Second, the subject premises being a covered property under the CARES Act required petitioner to serve a 30-day notice before commencing the proceeding; petitioner served only a 14-day rent demand.

Coronary artery disease is often treated with vascular stents to restore the blood flow. Recently, there has been growing interest in biodegradable metal stents, especially those made from magnesium (Mg). This review starts by explaining the complex pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and the current treatment options. It then discusses stents, including their potential benefits, capabilities, and limitations, as they represent the gold standard for percutaneous coronary intervention in treating atherosclerosis. Given the vital role of stents, we provide a thorough review of the manufacturing techniques involved, such as wire forming, subtractive manufacturing, and additive manufacturing, with a specific focus on stents …

In this rent overcharge action, the Appellate Division modified the lower court's order, granting summary judgment to the tenant on liability. The court held that the landlord's rent concessions, exceeding three months, functioned as a preferential rent under post-HSTPA law, rejecting pre-HSTPA DHCR guidance. It also found lease provisions allowing the landlord to assess attorneys' fees without a court order unconscionable and unenforceable under Real Property Law § 234-a and Rent Stabilization Law § 26-512(g). The landlord failed to rebut the presumption of willfulness, as post-commencement refunds do not defeat it, thus warranting treble damages. The case was remanded for …

Illicit Origins, Public Displays: How Trafficking And Repatriation Reshaped Ancient Greek Pottery In Modern Museums, Alisha Bhandari
Honors College Theses
This thesis examines how illicit excavation, antiquities trafficking, and repatriation have reshaped the modern circulation and interpretation of ancient Greek pottery in museum collections. While Greek pottery has traditionally been studied through style, iconography, attribution, and artistic value, this project shifts attention to the modern systems that have determined how these objects were excavated, sold, displayed, and contested. Through a literature review and three case studies — the Aineta Aryballos, the Python Bell-Krater, and the Athena Kylix — this thesis argues that ancient Greek pottery should be understood not only as evidence of antiquity, but also as evidence of modern …

A Governance-Aware Multi-Agent Framework For Enhancing Fairness & Temporal Accuracy In Disaster Response Systems, Md. Ashfaqur Rahman
A Governance-Aware Multi-Agent Framework For Enhancing Fairness & Temporal Accuracy In Disaster Response Systems, Md. Ashfaqur Rahman
Theses and Dissertations
Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated significant potential in disaster-response decision support, however, their deployment in high-stakes humanitarian settings raises critical concerns regarding factual reliability, fairness, temporal validity, and governance compliance. Hallucinated outputs, demographic bias, and outdated recommendations can directly impact vulnerable populations and undermine public trust. This dissertation proposes a governance-aware multi-agent framework designed to enhance fairness and temporal accuracy in disaster-response systems through structured Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), verification-driven orchestration, and adaptive correction mechanisms. The proposed architecture decomposes response generation into specialized agents responsible for real-time retrieval, fact-checking, bias auditing, temporal validation, threshold-based correction, and monitoring. By embedding governance constraints …

Background: Children undergoing cancer treatment experience a range of treatment-related toxicities that significantly affect quality of life and adherence to therapy. Current methods for symptom reporting rely heavily on clinician interpretation of caregiver or child verbal reports, which can result in incomplete or inaccurate records. The Pediatric Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (Pediatric PRO-CTCAE; National Cancer Institute) provides a validated mechanism for direct symptom reporting by children and caregivers, yet its traditional administration and preselection of questions limit the breadth of symptom capture.
Objective: This research aimed to co-design and conduct formative usability testing …

Sensation-Suppression Theory: A New Explanation For Fibromyalgia Syndrome And Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Me/Cfs), Michael E. Hyland
School of Psychology
Explanations and treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) are controversial, and outcomes are poor. This paper describes sensation-suppression theory, a theory modelled on self-organizing control systems that are capable of adaptation in response to inputs and used in applications of artificial intelligence. The theory shows how the need to suppress inflammatory and other causes of pain or fatigue due to challenging circumstances sensitizes the neurological processing of pain and fatigue, thereby creating the amplified sensations and abnormal cognitions of central sensitivity syndromes. These syndromes are caused by errors in an evolutionarily early behavior-control mechanism of …

English is the language of the court, but when it intends to serve a multilingual public, there must be a strong commitment to uphold the rights of limited English proficient (LEP) individuals. LEP individuals, particularly those that speak rare languages, are disadvantaged by various issues impacting interpreters and the courts. When only the interpreter’s words are reflected in the courtroom and the transcript, it is essential that the court ensures the accessibility of qualified interpretation, as any omission or misinterpretation can hinder access to justice. We must protect the interests of LEP individuals trying to navigate the court system, and …

The Higher Education Health Insurance Trap: How Underinsurance Fuels Health Inequity And Educational Inaccessibility, Hallie E. Vanney, David J. Satin
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
Higher education institutions are increasingly committed to recruiting more diverse students. As these efforts succeed, institutions face the parallel challenge of meeting an evolving student body's broader and more complex healthcare needs. This article highlights how student health insurance is a critical need that may be unmet by institutions traditionally designed for young, healthy, able-bodied students. Graduate and professional students are particularly vulnerable to a “health insurance trap”; they may discover, only after enrollment, that their plan does not cover essential care, they can no longer work full-time to gain commercial insurance, they have aged out or do not have …

General Submissions: Clinical Settings Materials
Background: Adolescent depression and suicide are critical public health concerns in the United States. Approximately 20% of youth aged 12–17 experience a major depressive episode annually, yet fewer than half receive treatment (NIMH, 2023). Suicide is a leading cause of death among adolescents and young adults (CDC, 2023). The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends screening for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adolescents aged 12–18 when adequate systems are in place for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up, but concludes that evidence is insufficient to recommend routine suicide risk screening in children and adolescents (USPSTF, 2022).
