Feasibility Of Fit24, A Digital Diabetes Prevention Program For Hispanic Adolescents: Qualitative Evaluation Study, Erica G Soltero, Salma M Musaad, Teresia M O'Connor, Debbe Thompson, Keith Norris, Bettina M Beech

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: Digital health interventions are promising for reaching and engaging high-risk youth in disease prevention opportunities; however, few digital prevention interventions have been developed for Hispanic youth, limiting our knowledge of these strategies among this population.

OBJECTIVE: This study qualitatively assessed the feasibility and acceptability of Fit24, a 12-week goal-setting intervention that uses a Fitbit watch (Fitbit Inc) and theoretically grounded SMS text messages to promote physical activity and sleep among Hispanic adolescents (aged between 14 and 16 years) with obesity.

METHODS: After completing the intervention, a subsample of youth (N=15) participated in an in-depth interview. We categorized the themes …

Reinvigorating The Post-Covid Gen Z English Major, Gaby Bedetti May 2024

Reinvigorating The Post-Covid Gen Z English Major, Gaby Bedetti

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Access the online Pressbooks version of this article here.

The decline in English majors has energized instructors to upskill for the post-COVID Gen Z student. Toward that end, this small-scale (n=20), one-semester study of an upper-division literature class identifies the preferred learning styles of English majors at a public comprehensive regional university in Kentucky. The participants represent national English major demographics. The research methods are quantitative and qualitative. Eight figures and an appendix are included. Three guidelines emerge for responding to the needs of Gen Z students: 1) keep communication brief, 2) co-create, and 3) interact in-person. The findings about …

Using An Interrupted Case Study To Engage Undergraduates’ Critical Thinking Style And Enhance Content Knowledge, Kelsey Hall, Katherine Starzec May 2024

Using An Interrupted Case Study To Engage Undergraduates’ Critical Thinking Style And Enhance Content Knowledge, Kelsey Hall, Katherine Starzec

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Access the online Pressbooks version of this article here.

The interrupted case study is a structured way to engage students in active learning. Interruptions, or pauses for reflection and discussion scheduled within the case-study presentation, provide students with a chance to collaborate and engage in critical thinking. Critical thinking style, which is a measure of how one tends to think critically, provides insight into how one tackles problem solving. This article describes a pilot project that combined critical-thinking style and an interrupted case study, delivered over a two-class-period time frame, to four college courses. The project’s goals were to assess …

The Role Of Literature In Science: How The Science Of Teaching Reading Has Changed Children’S Literature In Preservice Teacher Coursework, Emily Holtz, Stephanie Moody May 2024

The Role Of Literature In Science: How The Science Of Teaching Reading Has Changed Children’S Literature In Preservice Teacher Coursework, Emily Holtz, Stephanie Moody

Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence

Access the online Pressbooks version of this article here.

The Science of Teaching Reading (STR) has received increasing attention as states continue to pass educational policy initiatives grounded in STR research. One major change resulting from STR policies is the heavy focus on the systematic instruction of phonics. Texas in particular has seen sweeping changes to their preservice teacher (PST) certification requirements, resulting in teacher education programs (TEPs) having to adjust their literacy preparation coursework in response to these changes. This shift leaves questions surrounding the potential displacement of other literacy practices in TEPs, such as the use of children’s …

What Counts As Legitimate College Writing? An Exploration Of Knowledge Structures In Written Feedback, Miriam Moore May 2024

What Counts As Legitimate College Writing? An Exploration Of Knowledge Structures In Written Feedback, Miriam Moore

Journal of Response to Writing

Research in feedback literacy (Carless & Boud, 2018; Molloy, Boud, & Henderson, 2020; Yu & Liu, 2021; Zhang & Mao, 2023) explores student use of written feedback and barriers to feedback uptake; the role of faculty in designing contextually appropriate feedback has been termed teacher feedback literacy (Carless & Winstone, 2023). When feedback does not achieve desired results, faculty must evaluate their feedback practices; they may be unaware of underlying features that hinder feedback effectiveness. In this paper, a long-time instructor of first-year college composition (FYC) interrogates her own feedback practices using tools from the specialization dimension of Legitimation Code …

Generous Audience, Activist, Evaluator: Tutor-Teachers’ Knowledge, Practices, And Values For Response To Writing, Carolyn Wisniewski May 2024

Generous Audience, Activist, Evaluator: Tutor-Teachers’ Knowledge, Practices, And Values For Response To Writing, Carolyn Wisniewski

Journal of Response to Writing

The relationship between tutoring and teaching has been a recurrent topic of interest among writing center directors and writing program administrators. While scholarship agrees tutoring experience aids composition teachers with implementing process pedagogy and fostering a collaborative classroom, the relationship between tutoring and assessment of student writing is less clear. This qualitative study uses interviews with eight graduate teaching assistants with tutoring experience to examine how they transfer and juxtapose knowledge, practices, and values for response between the writing center and classroom. Like previous scholarship, this research finds writing center tutoring contributes to teachers’ enactment of constructivist, student-centered pedagogy and …

Land Use Intensification And Bio-Resource Utilisation In The South Pacific Islands, David Lopez Cornelio May 2024

Land Use Intensification And Bio-Resource Utilisation In The South Pacific Islands, David Lopez Cornelio

International Journal of Islands Research

The long and gradual colonisation of the Pacific islands created settlements of cohesive social networks that fused or were displaced by western ways of life, trade and governance through the centuries. In this paper, a historical review of the processes of island discovery, plants domestication, and of land use practices are discussed alongside the main socioeconomic drivers of land cover change. The native trees of the South Pacific constitute an invaluable resource for sustainable development; they were used and domesticated for thousands of years but logging, commercial agriculture, mining, the introduction of exotic species and urban expansion are threatening them …

Opposition To The Poor Law Amendment Act Of 1834, Janae Lakey May 2024

Opposition To The Poor Law Amendment Act Of 1834, Janae Lakey

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

According to John Bull, "I repeat, I consider this New Poor Act a most cruel, a most unjust, and injurious enactment." John Bull expressed the frustration and injustice many Englishmen felt toward the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834, or the new Poor Law. Before this statute, the Poor Law Act of 1601, otherwise known as the 43d Elizabeth or the Old Poor Law, governed poor relief. According to this law, parish guardians supported their own poor with funds extracted from parish residents. Their responsibilities included assigning pauper children to apprenticeships to learn skillful trades and giving relief to the …

Making Sport Of A Nation The Politicization Of Bullfighting In Napoleonic Spain, Blake C. Clayton May 2024

Making Sport Of A Nation The Politicization Of Bullfighting In Napoleonic Spain, Blake C. Clayton

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Bullfighting entrenched itself in the cultural life of the Spanish nation early in the seventeenth century and has since become a highly publicized, distinctly Spanish pastime. Calling it "el espectaculo mas nacional," the count of Navas wrote that "if Rome lived happily on bread and war, then Madrid lives happily on bread and bulls." While the majority of the scholars who have written on Spanish bullfighting have done so in hopes of elucidating its pseudoscientific, often nebulous connection to the Spanish soul, the festival has had considerable impact on the nation as an institution and a symbol. Often …

The Mormon Reformation A Historiographical Essay, Julie Harris Adams

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

On December 12, 1889, the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement that proclaimed, "We denounce as entirely untrue the allegation which has been made, that our church favors or believes in the killing of persons who leave the church or apostatize from its doctrines." It went on to explain that the Church abhorred the shedding of human blood except as a capital crime penalty resulting from a legal, public trial. This manifesto came in response to the "gross misrepresentations of the doctrines, aims and practices …

"Born For Liberty" The Emergence Of Female Patriotism During The American Revolution, Anne Bennett

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Esther Reed, a colonial woman who lived during the American Revolution, praised the women of her time: "Born for liberty, disdaining to bear the irons of a tyrannic [sic] Government, we associate ourselves to the grandeur of those ... who have broken the chains of slavery, forged by tyrants in the times of ignorance and barbarity."

"Brothers In Christ?" The Dynamics Of Slavery And Catholicism In Brazil, Jaime Toiaivao Alley May 2024

"Brothers In Christ?" The Dynamics Of Slavery And Catholicism In Brazil, Jaime Toiaivao Alley

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

In 1946, Frank Tannenbaum provoked the ire of American historians by claiming that slavery in Brazil was more humane than in the United States. Observing the laws, religious pronouncements, and social trends related to Brazilian slavery, he concluded in his book Slave and Citizen that the presence of the Catholic Church in Brazil mitigated the normally brutal nature of slavery. This religious climate, he asserted, accounted in large part for the difference in slaves' experiences in Brazil and in the United States. In reality, however, the position of the Catholic Church towards slavery was neither simple nor one-dimensional and does …

"Have Faith In God And U.S. Reclamation" Failure On The Boise Project, 1905- 1924, Jane Morgan

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

The "destiny of man is to possess the whole earth," agricultural specialist John A. Widtsoe declared in 1928; "and the destiny of earth is to be subject to man."' Widtsoe's comment reflected the U.S. government's imperative to conquer and manage nature to fulfill the nation's destiny. Reclamation, the conversion of wasteland, usually arid deserts, into farmland, was a central program of the conservationist movement. A progressive government saw the West as the home of a future American empire where strong, independent households would unite to reclaim the land. Believing the Secretary of the Interior's promise that agricultural prosperity could be …

Working Against Themselves Jesuit Tactics To Displace The Huron Indian Shamans, C. Mackenzie Snow May 2024

Working Against Themselves Jesuit Tactics To Displace The Huron Indian Shamans, C. Mackenzie Snow

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

In the spring and summer of 1635, a severe drought struck Huron country. Falling back on traditional means for relief, the native people appealed to the local shamans, their spiritual leaders, for aid. Tehorenhaegnon, one of the most famous of these "sorcerers," as the Jesuits called them, promised relief in return for "the value of ten hatchets" and "a multitude of feasts." However, Tehorenhaegon's "efforts were in vain-dreaming, feasting, dancing, were all to no purpose, there fell not a drop of water; so that he had to confess that he could not succeed, and he declared that the crops would …

The Life Of Edward J. Logue And The Rebuilding Of America's Cities After Wwii, Lizabeth Cohen

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Let's cut right to the chase: what's a social historian like me doing writing a biography of a dead white man named Edward J. Logue? I've never written a biography before. My two previous books, Making a New Deal and A Consumers' Republic, have made contributions to twentieth-century United States history by giving agency to social groups often considered powerless, such as industrial workers, first-generation immigrants, rank-and-file supporters of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, African American consumers, new suburbanites, and female consumer activists. I have made my reputation as a twentieth-century U.S. historian by arguing that ordinary Americans have been …

Preface, Sarah Loose

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

In the preface to one of his many books David Herlihy, renowned professor of medieval history, challenged his students and colleagues to consider his work carefully, quoting the great Roman poet Horace: "If you know something more accurate than the things written here, then openly share it; if not, use these with me" (Epistles, 1.6.67-68). 1 Each year, history students at Brigham Young University take up the challenge described by Horace, to think critically, ask questions, and participate in the ongoing search for historical truth. l11e Beta Iota chapter of Phi Alpha Theta publishes The Thetean annually as a means …

Winterer, Jeffrey D. Colvin, Mark A. Clements, Shilpi Relan, Kelsee Halpin

Research Days

Screening for health-related social needs (HRSNs) is recommended as part of routine diabetes care given the impact of social factors on health outcomes.

Youth presenting to a tertiary diabetes center will have different diabetes-related health outcomes based on positive or negative HRSNs screenings at routine clinic visits.

Baseline data were collected from patients whose parent/guardian completed a HRSN screen as part of their child’s diabetes clinic intake from 9/1/21 to 8/30/22. The screen is a 6-item questionnaire adapted from the Accountable Health Communities HRSNs Screening Tool to screen for HRSNs in 4 domains (housing, utilities, transportation, and food). Longitudinal data …

Three Card Spread: Theorizing Queer And Trans Futurity For Tenure-Track Faculty Through Divination Dialogues, Justin A. Gutzwa, Sergio A. Gonzalez

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

This article lies betwixt methodological, conceptual, and empirical scholarship, queering traditional presentations of qualitative research to imagine what a future in the academy could look like for queer and trans faculty if the academy instead prioritized queer and trans joy, thriving, and life. The authors, two queer and trans early-career tenure-track faculty, utilize divination dialogues, or conversations that take place during and following a divinatory practice such as tarot reading, as a liberatory politic of community building and co-theorization on how to actualize our own futures in a colonial, neoliberal academy. In presenting excerpts from the conversation that took place …

EPA’s Updated Toxicity Criteria for Arsenic: Implications on Coal Ash Sites Authors Mr. Todd Bernhardt - United States - Haley & Aldrich Inc. Mr. Jay Peters - United States - Haley & Aldrich Inc. Abstract In October 2023, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a draft Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) Toxicological Review of Inorganic Arsenic in which updated toxicity criteria were proposed that are significantly more conservative than the current values. Adoption of the proposed toxicity criteria could have significant implications on risk-based levels for arsenic. Although the Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Rule relies on EPA Maximum …
