Heat And Observed Economic Activity In The Rich Urban Tropics, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming. Liu, Alberto. Salvo, Rhita P B. Simorangkir May 2024

Heat And Observed Economic Activity In The Rich Urban Tropics, Eric Fesselmeyer, Haoming. Liu, Alberto. Salvo, Rhita P B. Simorangkir

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

We use space-and-time resolved mobility data to assess how heat impacts Singapore, a rich city-state and arguably a harbinger of what is to come in the urbanizing tropics. Singapore’s offices, factories, malls, buses, and trains are widely air conditioned, its public schools less so. We document increased attendance and commuting to workplaces, malls, and the more air-conditioned schools on hotter relative to cooler days, particularly by low-income residents with limited use of adaptive technologies at home. Investment by rich cities may attenuate heat’s pervasive negative consequences on productive outcomes, yet this may worsen the climate emergency in the long run.

Open-Source Optimization For Green Last Mile Delivery And Other Applications, John Sooter

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Solving combinatorial optimization problems at scale and of sufficiently interesting context has historically required commercial solvers and access to proprietary company data. The development of performant open-source mathematical programming software and crowdsourced datasets has created an opportunity for individuals and enterprises alike to consider alternative solutions to problems with social and personal implications. This honors thesis represents a summary of my undergraduate research work, an application of optimization to three distinct problems connected to these developments. First, we present an optimization study of a last mile delivery system that shows optimization for energy consumption can generate vehicleindependent fuel savings at …

Genomic Characterization Of Enterococcus Spp Infecting Chicken Embryo, Aishat Olaoluwa Lawal

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Chicken embryo mortality has been attributed to bacterial infections and can lead to a decline in hatchability, posing potential losses in the broiler industry. This study aims to investigate the vertical transmission of specific bacterial pathogens from breeder hens to subsequent broiler flocks through MGEs and their association with host specificity. In our sampling of 360 eggs from a broiler flock, we isolated various Enterococcus species, including E. gallinarum and E. faecalis, from incubated egg yolks or aborted embryos. E. avium was found in unincubated bad yolks. Other species like Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, and Bacillus were observed but presumed to be …

The theoretical framework for this research was based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. The research objectives were to determine the perceived importance of career promotion activities, the frequency of career promotion activities, the perceived job satisfaction of SBAE teachers, and the …

Describing Benefits, Challenges, And Barriers Of Offering Adolescent Programs At Public Gardens In The United States, Hiliary Rodgers May 2024

Describing Benefits, Challenges, And Barriers Of Offering Adolescent Programs At Public Gardens In The United States, Hiliary Rodgers

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research shows a lack of educational programs for the adolescent audience at public gardens in the United States. Along with benefits that adolescent programs create for the institutions that offer them, there are also challenges associated with designing programs for this specific audience, and barriers preventing public gardens from offering them. There is little research related to adolescent programs at public gardens in the United States, aside from a 2010 study by Purcell et al. that explored the benefits, challenges, and barriers of adolescent programs. The current study aimed to determine the prevalence of adolescent programs at public gardens in …

Constructing Trust Among Large-Scale Organizations: An Archaeological Case Of Collective Action From Tlaxcallan, Mexico, Marc Daniel Marino May 2024

Constructing Trust Among Large-Scale Organizations: An Archaeological Case Of Collective Action From Tlaxcallan, Mexico, Marc Daniel Marino

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within nation-states, agencies, cooperatives, and other groups seeking to coordinate in the management of resources, conflicting interests can hinder cooperation and preclude joint action. Increasing transparency in resource management policies and facilitating communication among groups can reduce cooperative dilemmas by building trust. Developments in collective action research have demonstrated that increased communication and transparency among participants can build trust because future outcomes and behaviors can be predicted based on observations of past actions. Archaeology provides case studies to explore some of the earliest attempts by nation-states to reduce tensions caused by competing factions. This dissertation explores one such case study …

Turfgrass Soil Surfactants: Examining Active Ingredients, Application Strategies, And The Structure–Function Relationship In Sand-Based Putting Greens, Daniel O'Brien May 2024

Turfgrass Soil Surfactants: Examining Active Ingredients, Application Strategies, And The Structure–Function Relationship In Sand-Based Putting Greens, Daniel O'Brien

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Soil surfactants, commonly referred to as wetting agents, are a leading water management strategy for golf courses. Non-ionic block copolymers are the most common type of turfgrass soil surfactant. However, differences in the registration process and labeling requirements allow soil surfactants to enter the marketplace accompanied by far-less data compared to other products used on golf courses. This has led to considerable confusion among golf course superintendents. Three primary sources of confusion are: (i) the widely-used marketing terminology of “penetrants” and “retainers” to classify wetting agents; (ii) active ingredients which in some cases are not disclosed at all; and (iii) …

Cam And Design For Manufacturing: Developing A Project-Based Learning Course, Stephen Pierson May 2024

Cam And Design For Manufacturing: Developing A Project-Based Learning Course, Stephen Pierson

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

To effectively serve student career success, mechanical engineering programs must teach students how to account for manufacturing considerations in design. Despite this, manufacturing education is a glaring area of need in current engineering curricula. In fact, basic manufacturing knowledge is one of the only hard skills consistently ranked as one of the greatest weaknesses of mechanical engineering hires in surveys of industrial employers over the last few decades. Without radically changing departmental curriculum to include more emphasis on design-build projects, one solution to combat this is to incubate a lab course in mechanical engineering programs in which undergraduates would practice …

Cmd: Co-Analyzed Iot Malware Detection And Forensics Via Network And Hardware Domains, Ziming Zhao, Zhaoxuan Li, Jiongchi Yu, Fan Zhang, Xiaofei Xie, Haitao Xu, Binbin Chen

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With the widespread use of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, malware detection has become a hot spot for both academic and industrial communities. Existing approaches can be roughly categorized into network-side and host-side. However, existing network-side methods are difficult to capture contextual semantics from cross-source traffic, and previous host-side methods could be adversary-perceived and expose risks for tampering. More importantly, a single perspective cannot comprehensively track the multi-stage lifecycle of IoT malware. In this paper, we present CMD, a co-analyzed IoT malware detection and forensics system by combining hardware and network domains. For the network part, CMD proposes a tailored …

Enhancing Visual Grounding In Vision-Language Pre-Training With Position-Guided Text Prompts, Alex Jinpeng Wang, Pan Zhou, Mike Zheng Shou, Shuicheng Yan May 2024

Enhancing Visual Grounding In Vision-Language Pre-Training With Position-Guided Text Prompts, Alex Jinpeng Wang, Pan Zhou, Mike Zheng Shou, Shuicheng Yan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Vision-Language Pre-Training (VLP) has demonstrated remarkable potential in aligning image and text pairs, paving the way for a wide range of cross-modal learning tasks. Nevertheless, we have observed that VLP models often fall short in terms of visual grounding and localization capabilities, which are crucial for many downstream tasks, such as visual reasoning. In response, we introduce a novel Position-guided Text Prompt ( PTP ) paradigm to bolster the visual grounding abilities of cross-modal models trained with VLP. In the VLP phase, PTP divides an image into N x N blocks and employs a widely-used object detector to identify objects …

Vibmilk: Non-Intrusive Milk Spoilage Detection Via Smartphone Vibration, Yuezhong Wu, Wei Song, Yanxiang Wang, Dong Ma, Weitao Xu, Mahbub Hassan, Wen Hu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Quantifying the chemical process of milk spoilage is challenging due to the need for bulky, expensive equipment that is not user-friendly for milk producers or customers. This lack of a convenient and accurate milk spoilage detection system can cause two significant issues. First, people who consume spoiled milk may experience serious health problems. Secondly, milk manufacturers typically provide a “best before” date to indicate freshness, but this date only shows the highest quality of the milk, not the last day it can be safely consumed, leading to significant milk waste. A practical and efficient solution to this problem is proposed …

The Impact Of Avatar Completeness On Embodiment And The Detectability Of Hand Redirection In Virtual Reality, Martin Feick, Andre Zenner, Simon Seibert, Anthony Tang, Antonio Krüger May 2024

The Impact Of Avatar Completeness On Embodiment And The Detectability Of Hand Redirection In Virtual Reality, Martin Feick, Andre Zenner, Simon Seibert, Anthony Tang, Antonio Krüger

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To enhance interactions in VR, many techniques introduce offsets between the virtual and real-world position of users’ hands. Nevertheless, such hand redirection (HR) techniques are only effective as long as they go unnoticed by users—not disrupting the VR experience. While several studies consider how much unnoticeable redirection can be applied, these focus on mid-air floating hands that are disconnected from users’ bodies. Increasingly, VR avatars are embodied as being directly connected with the user’s body, which provide more visual cue anchoring, and may therefore reduce the unnoticeable redirection threshold. In this work, we studied more complete avatars and their effect …

Uterine Fibroids: A Silent Crisis, Diana Mwikisa May 2024

Uterine Fibroids: A Silent Crisis, Diana Mwikisa

Communications Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Black women in the United States are three times more likely to have uterine fibroids compared to any other ethnicity. Existing studies estimate that about 80 to 90 percent of Black women will develop fibroids by age 50. Uterine fibroids are “non-cancerous tumors found in the uterus” (Orellana et al., 2022, p.1184). The exact cause of uterine fibroids is not fully understood, and more research is needed to gain insight into the causes of this debilitating disease (Yu et al., 2018). The purpose of the study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of Black women with …

The Role Of Myocardin And Its Effector Proteins In Tgf-Β Induced Cytoskeletal Remodeling Of Ipf Fibroblasts, Khadijat Abolore Olawuyi May 2024

The Role Of Myocardin And Its Effector Proteins In Tgf-Β Induced Cytoskeletal Remodeling Of Ipf Fibroblasts, Khadijat Abolore Olawuyi

Biotechnology Theses

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is characterized by thickening and stiffness around the air sacs. Approved treatments like nintedanib and pirfenidone slow disease progression in IPF and often have tolerability issues. More research is needed to fully grasp the mechanisms behind abnormal cytoskeletal changes in lung cells, notably fibroblasts and epithelial cells, and their role in fibrosis progression. Previous studies suggest that myocardin expression and function, traditionally limited to smooth/cardiac development in physiology, become active in pathophysiological conditions like pleural fibrosis. Myocardin's role in liver and kidney fibrosis is known, but its involvement in IPF is unclear. To get more insights, …

Interrogating Haaland V. Brackeen: Family Regulation, Constitutional Power, And Tribal Resilience: The Connecticut Law Review Symposium, Casey M. Corvino, Julia R. Vassallo May 2024

Interrogating Haaland V. Brackeen: Family Regulation, Constitutional Power, And Tribal Resilience: The Connecticut Law Review Symposium, Casey M. Corvino, Julia R. Vassallo

Connecticut Law Review

In October 2023, the Connecticut Law Review hosted the Symposium “Interrogating Haaland v. Brackeen: Family Regulation, Constitutional Power, and Tribal Resilience.” The symposium was centered on the state of federal Indian law in the wake of the Brackeen decision. This decision was a victory for Indigenous families and Native nations as it left the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) unscathed and affirmed the constitutional relationship between tribal nations and the United States. However, threats to tribal sovereignty continue as a handful of states and interest groups continue to seek ways to challenge tribal authority and federal laws that support it. …

Practiced Peril: The Flawed Role Of Experience In Accidental Death Determinations, Casey M. Corvino May 2024

Practiced Peril: The Flawed Role Of Experience In Accidental Death Determinations, Casey M. Corvino

Connecticut Law Review

Words often carry an intuitive meaning that defies explicit definition. While this vagueness typically poses no issue in our daily lives, it presents distinct challenges within the legal realm where words and their definitions wield the power to influence the course of justice. One abstract concept is notoriously elusive: what is an accident? Despite the apparent simplicity of identifying what is commonly understood implicitly, there are inherent challenges in “giving substance to a concept which is largely intuitive.”

The Wickman framework was crafted to navigate these challenges, recognizing that an insured’s background, experience, and skill in a particular activity may …

Ensuring Climate Litigants’ Standing: Insights From National And International Climate Litigation, Florence T.B. Simon May 2024

Ensuring Climate Litigants’ Standing: Insights From National And International Climate Litigation, Florence T.B. Simon

Connecticut Law Review

In March 2023, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its Sixth Assessment Report and confirmed unequivocally that human activities are the cause of climate change. Greenhouse gas emissions over the next few years are capable of causing irreversible and catastrophic damage to our planet. Catalyst litigation plays an important role in tackling climate change by prodding governments to assume a role in implementing adaptation and mitigation measures. Despite the extreme consequences that climate change will have on humanity, jurisdictional issues—such as standing—impose considerable hurdles for climate litigants. And these hurdles ultimately keep plaintiffs from obtaining a ruling, or …

The Original Meaning Of Commerce In The Indian Commerce Clause, Gregory Ablavsky May 2024

The Original Meaning Of Commerce In The Indian Commerce Clause, Gregory Ablavsky

Connecticut Law Review

In Haaland v. Brackeen, the Supreme Court returned to the foundational question of federal authority over relations between the United States and Native nations, long known as “Indian affairs.” The decision reaffirmed well-established precedent affirming broad federal authority in the area, but it also underscored ongoing disagreement, as Justices Gorsuch and Thomas offered lengthy and dueling investigations of the original understanding.

This Essay explores one aspect of that history: the original meaning of “commerce” in the Indian Commerce Clause. Nearly a decade ago, I wrote an article that sought, as its title indicated, to move “beyond the Indian Commerce Clause.” …

Haaland V. Brackeen And Mancari: On History, Taking Children, And The Right-Wing Assault On Indigenous Sovereignty, Laura Briggs

Connecticut Law Review

In June 2023, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) of 1978 in Haaland v. Brackeen, making it harder for (some) Indigenous families and communities to lose their children. The decision left one key question unanswered, however: whether protections specifically for American Indian households served as an illegitimate “racial” preference. Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s opinion for the majority argued that the petitioners lacked standing to raise this issue. Thus, the Court left the door open to continuing challenges by those who have an interest in using ICWA’s cute children and clean-cut evangelical Christian parents …

Gnsi Decision Brief: Repression Without Borders: How Nations Silence Critics Abroad, Sarah Brown, Amy K. Mitchell May 2024

Gnsi Decision Brief: Repression Without Borders: How Nations Silence Critics Abroad, Sarah Brown, Amy K. Mitchell

GNSI Decision Briefs

Introduction

Transnational Repression (TNR) – the act of a government, or authorized group, coercing, repressing, or retaliating against individuals outside its sovereign territory – has significantly increased in recent years. Transnational repression often targets human rights defenders, activists, critics, journalists, and political opponents. Despite its insidious spread, the international community continues to grapple with applying a standard definition, as well as accountability and enforcement.

Transnational repression knows no borders. TNR can take many forms ranging from physical attacks such as the brazen murder of American citizen and journalist Jamal Khashoggi, coercion by proxy (e.g., the threatening of family members) to …

Train Or Restrain? Using International Perspectives To Inform The American Fair Use Analysis Of Copyright In Generative Artificial Intelligence Training, Serena Lightstone May 2024

Train Or Restrain? Using International Perspectives To Inform The American Fair Use Analysis Of Copyright In Generative Artificial Intelligence Training, Serena Lightstone

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The rise of generative artificial intelligence (“AI”) has brought questions regarding the permissibility of using copyrighted materials in training generative AI systems around the globe. This article examines whether such use constitutes infringement under the American fair use doctrine, drawing insights from the regulatory approaches of the European Union (EU) and Japan.

Ultimately, this article advocates for United States courts to recognize the permissibility of using copyrighted materials in training generative AI models, rejecting the EU’s rights-holder-centric approach, and going beyond Japan’s limited-permissibility solution. Through a detailed four-factor fair use analysis, this article demonstrates that training generative AI on copyrighted …
