Molecular Mechanisms Of Sensory Post-Acute Sequelae Of Covid-19 Infection: A Comprehensive Literature Review, Maha Siddiqui

Honors Scholar Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended the world in the last few years, bringing with it countless varying physiological effects, some of which extend beyond the acute phase of the infection. Long-term COVID-19, also referred to as "chronic" or “long-haul” COVID, has become an increasingly prevalent health issue in recent years. Long term sensory loss, particularly anosmia and ageusia (loss of smell and taste respectively), are among the biggest concerns to patients suffering from this condition due to the considerable detriment to their quality of life. This literature review aims to provide an overview of the molecular mechanisms associated with sensory …

In Silico Conformation Analysis Of The Disordered Regions Of Proteins Associated With The Β-Catenin Destruction Complex And P53, Clifford Chen May 2024

In Silico Conformation Analysis Of The Disordered Regions Of Proteins Associated With The Β-Catenin Destruction Complex And P53, Clifford Chen

Honors Scholar Theses

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by an accumulation of genetic mutations and abnormalities during cell division. These errors are caused by a variety of factors such as the inhibition of cell cycle control proteins such as p53 that prevent cells with incorrectly replicated chromosomes from segregating as well as genetic and environmental susceptibilities that further cause DNA alteration. Proteins like p53 are tumor suppressor proteins which prevent the growth of cancer cells by regulating the growth of cells as they pass through the cell cycle. Tumor suppressor proteins p53, Axin, Adenomatous polyposis coli (APC), and β-catenin were analyzed …

Performing Presidential Age: "It's About How Old Your Ideas Are", Valerie Barnes Lipscomb May 2024

Performing Presidential Age: "It's About How Old Your Ideas Are", Valerie Barnes Lipscomb

English Sarasota Manatee Campus Faculty Publications

During a February surprise appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, President Joe Biden whipped out his trademark aviator sunglasses and traded quips with Meyers about a supposed conspiracy with Taylor Swift, much to the delight of the younger live audience. The next day, reviews were mixed about whether the president was trying too hard or did in fact manage to look hipper. To look younger. While US presidential nominees have been consciously performing their campaigns for decades, during this cycle, considering age as a performance has been especially prominent. Commentators and critics have specifically addressed the careful staging of …

Divining The Self: Applying Tarot As A Projective Technique In Counseling, Eileen Clinton May 2024

Divining The Self: Applying Tarot As A Projective Technique In Counseling, Eileen Clinton

Educational Specialist, 2020-current

Projective techniques comprise a controversial category of interventions in therapy, but when utilized appropriately, can inspire valuable progress in the counseling process. This paper first explores the clinical benefits of projectives and scholarly concerns regarding their use in a clinical setting, before providing a brief overview of the history and practice of tarot card reading. Tarot has infrequently been the focus of academic research as a projective technique, and is presented here as a secular medium to enrich the therapeutic work and relationship. If utilized from an expressive rather than a diagnostic approach, this paper argues for the application of …

Color Change: Illumination And Observers, Che Shen May 2024

Color Change: Illumination And Observers, Che Shen

Theses

While color change is often associated with physical or chemical alterations in an object, this thesis focuses on perceptual color changes due to factors like color inconstancy under different lighting conditions, observer metamerism due to varying color matching functions, and individual differences in hue perception despite identical tristimulus values. Based on the complexities of color change phenomenon, a psychophysical experiment was conducted to establish the threshold of color inconstancy, where observers were tasked with categorizing colors under varying lighting. A major advancement in this thesis is the development of the Weighted Geometric Mean (WGM) model, an advanced chromatic adaptation model …

Revitalizing The Rochester Gorge Strategic Urban Site Planning To Enhance Water Quality In The Lower Genesee River, Stephen Adam Stoker May 2024

Revitalizing The Rochester Gorge Strategic Urban Site Planning To Enhance Water Quality In The Lower Genesee River, Stephen Adam Stoker

Theses

The project began with investigating a regional asset of interest: the Genesee River. Initial research into this area revealed that the river suffers from poor water quality. The causes and effects of poor water quality were explored, and it was determined that excess nutrients – namely phosphorus – play a critical role in the water quality of the Genesee River and present downstream risk at the river’s point of outflow in Lake Ontario. An examination of peer-reviewed literature, contemporary examples in the built environment where similar water quality issues were addressed, and existing watershed design frameworks were conducted to understand …

Concerning Classification: American Alternative Classification Systems 1930 - Today, Sasha Frizzell May 2024

Concerning Classification: American Alternative Classification Systems 1930 - Today, Sasha Frizzell

Library Scholarship

Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) have been widely used in American libraries for over 100 years. Since their adoption, librarians have been interrogating the structure of these classification schemas and finding that these systems will not equitably represent the resources in their collections. One solution to this problem is creating an alternative classification system that modifies the existing schema or creates a wholly new alternative.

This presentation will explore two different types of alternative classification systems: those built for special libraries and those constructed to improve access to resources by and about historically marginalized groups. …

Addressing Multimodal Transportation Needs Through Complete Streets Implementation, Eirini Stavropoulou, Nikiforos Stamatiadis, William Staats, Teng Wang, Reginald Souleyrette May 2024

Addressing Multimodal Transportation Needs Through Complete Streets Implementation, Eirini Stavropoulou, Nikiforos Stamatiadis, William Staats, Teng Wang, Reginald Souleyrette

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Since the early 2000s, over 1,600 transportation agencies in the United States have adopted Complete Streets policies. Recently, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) published its Complete Streets, Roads, and Highways Manual, which aims to implement a safe and equitable transportation system throughout the state, as well as a Complete Streets policy. The manual and policy offer guidance on integrating Complete Streets principles into road design, however, KYTC currently lacks tools or methods to evaluate how well specific projects address Complete Streets goals. This is problematic because systematic assessments are needed to effectively prioritize projects and allocate scarce funding. Based …

Estimation Of Benefits From Pedestrian And Bicycle Improvements, Dionysios Tzamakos, Nikiforos Stamatiadis, William Staats, Teng Wang, Reginald Souleyrette

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Delivering safe mobility for all users of the transportation system is a key priority of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC). Because many system users rely on pedestrian and bicycle facilities, it is critical for KYTC to balance pedestrian and bicycle facility accommodations with those for motorized users. Currently, the Strategic Highway Investment Formula for Tomorrow (SHIFT) — the Cabinet’s systematic approach to scoring and prioritizing proposed roadway projects — awards up to five points (out of a possible total of 100) for pedestrian and bicycle projects. But the agency lacks a robust method for estimating the benefits of pedestrian and …

Changes In Zooplankton Community Structure In A Wetland Metacommunity Following Homogenization From Flooding, Kevin Peteroy May 2024

Changes In Zooplankton Community Structure In A Wetland Metacommunity Following Homogenization From Flooding, Kevin Peteroy

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Wetlands in urban areas provide ecosystem services that benefit the environment and society. Through these services, wetlands are able to help mitigate consequences of human activities such as flooding by increasing permeable surface coverage and contaminant filtering from polluted runoff. One such type of wetland, vernal pools, provide important temporary habitat for many organisms, including myriad zooplankton species. For planktonic organisms, flooding events might be disruptive or allow them to disperse to areas that would be otherwise inaccessible. I observed changing abiotic conditions and zooplankton communities in 20 vernal pools at a wetland in Wayne, New Jersey, USA over a …

Interpretive Divergence In The New York Court Of Appeals, Ethan J. Leib May 2024

Interpretive Divergence In The New York Court Of Appeals, Ethan J. Leib

Journal of Legislation

This Article focuses attention on the New York Court of Appeals, which is decidedly formalist about contract interpretation but decidedly contextualist about statutory interpretation. It explores some recent exemplary cases to show where the New York Court of Appeals tends to land in what turns out to be, for this court at least, two different battlefields in the law of interpretation. Finding that there is “interpretive divergence” between statutory and contract cases, the Article then reflects on the practice of divergence more generally, revisiting assumptions about why anyone might have thought harmonization was sensible in the first place.

There Is No More New Frontier: Analyzing Wildfire Management Efforts In The United States, Morgan D. Gafford May 2024

There Is No More New Frontier: Analyzing Wildfire Management Efforts In The United States, Morgan D. Gafford

Journal of Legislation

Congress needs to address the major wildfire problem by enacting more legislation that works alongside state governments and their own fire management goals. It is time for Congress to take wildfire suppression legislation more seriously and move it beyond the introductory phase. It is time for Congress and the other branches of the federal government to work together. It is time for everyone—but especially Congress—to fully comprehend the detrimental effects the most severe fires have on the environment, society, and the economy.

Barriers To Breastfeeding In Low Socioeconomic Populations, Nikki Goldberg, Paige Daws May 2024

Barriers To Breastfeeding In Low Socioeconomic Populations, Nikki Goldberg, Paige Daws

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

This literature review assessed and determined common themes among vulnerable populations for the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding habits. The barriers identified were divided into four themes including: lack of support, inflexible employment environment, differences of breastfeeding norms and education, and financial burden. Interventions identified in this literature review were community support programs and the implementation of hospital programs and initiatives to encourage breastfeeding. The need for this research and discussion stems from the sub-optimal infant feeding practices that contribute to infant mortality rates (Gallegos et al., 2020).

Computational Predictions Of Heart Failure Drug Effects On Cardiac Fibrosis, Aaron Gardner May 2024

Computational Predictions Of Heart Failure Drug Effects On Cardiac Fibrosis, Aaron Gardner

Chemical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The extracellular matrix is a complex system surrounding cells that is crucial to all of the cardiovascular system’s functions. Fibrosis is an excessive accumulation (scarring) of the extracellular matrix. Fibrosis is typically a negative event, and the scarring must be reduced in the heart in order to maintain its functionality. Due to this, simulations are run using the software “Netflux” in order to determine the effects of different heart failure drugs on cardiac fibrosis. The drugs that were simulated were an ACE Inhibitor, BAR Beta Blocker, ARB Blocker, and Entresto. These drugs were simulated over 50 hours at three different …

Presidential Nomination Forecasting 2024: Classic Components In An Atypical Race, Sophia Coco May 2024

Presidential Nomination Forecasting 2024: Classic Components In An Atypical Race, Sophia Coco

Political Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

The topic of American presidential elections has remained central to political discussions since the founding fathers drafted the Constitution. Article Two, Section One of the Constitution lays out the guidelines for presidential elections, yet Article Two neglects to mention the process of how to nominate candidates for the presidential race. Lacking Constitutional guidance, early presidential nomination conventions of the parties in the 19th century and early 20th century did not reflect ideals of democracy. The delegates that voted at the conventions were selected by party insiders and their votes reflected the sentiments of the party bosses, disregarding the …

Mitochondria are essential for survival and as such, impairments in organelle homeostasis significantly accelerate age-related morbidity and mortality. Here, we determined the contribution of bioenergetic efficiency to life span and health span in Drosophila melanogaster utilizing the mitochondrial uncoupler BAM15. Life span was determined in flies fed a normal diet (ND) or high fat diet (HFD) supplemented with vehicle or BAM15. Locomotor function was determined by negative geotaxis assay in middle-aged flies fed vehicle or BAM15 under ND or HFD conditions. Redox capacity (high-resolution respirometry/fluorometry), citrate synthase (enzyme activity), mtDNA content (qPCR), gene expression (qPCR), and protein expression (western blot) …
