Perception Of African Immigrants Living In The United States Towards Latent Tuberculosis Infection Treatment Hesitancy, Akinwale O. Obatayo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

About 80% of active tuberculosis (TB) cases are caused by untreated latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), with most being foreign-born United States residents. Despite the availability of preventive therapies, African immigrants living in the United States are hesitant to accept LTBI treatment. Although researchers have explored LTBI treatment hesitancy among foreign-born United States citizens, no study has explored the perspectives of African immigrants living in the United States. This generic qualitative study explored the perception of African immigrants living in the United States on LTBI treatment hesitancy. Participants’ inclusion criteria include those 18 years and older with a positive TB test, …

Understanding How Cte Educators Perceive That Professional Development Supports Educational Practices And Retention, Neyla Rivera

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Career and technical education (CTE) educators are inconsistently supported with professional development (PD). The inconsistent support may limit advancing teaching and learning, serving the students, and retaining CTE educators in the field. How supported CTE teachers feel with PD to implement instructional practices that serve students and encourage teachers to remain in the field was explored in this study. A basic qualitative approach was used along with the theoretical foundation of the social cognitive career theory, specifically, the interest and choice model. Semistructured interviews were conducted with ten CTE educators nationwide, and MAXQDA was used for data analysis. The data …

Type 2 Diabetes As A Risk Factor For The Development Of Cognitive Dysfunction In U.S. Adults, Bobbi Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is no consensus as to whether having type 2 diabetes increases an individual’s risk for developing cognitive dysfunction. Though cognitive dysfunction is considered a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, it is also classified as a newly formed diabetes-related complication. The purpose of the study was to evaluate if self-reported healthcare – diagnosed diabetes has any association in the risk of the development of cognitive dysfunction in individuals living with type 2 diabetes. Self-determination theory served as the theoretical framework. The research questions concerned whether (a) an association exists between diabetes and cognitive dysfunction, (b) ethnicity plays a vital …

The Experiences Of Post Secondary School Completion Of Academically Talented African American Teenaged Parents, Adrienne Denise Butler

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Teen pregnancy and parenting are cited as the reasons 1 in 3 teens drop out of high school. For African American teenagers, the drop-out rate is slightly higher, with 38% of teen parents leaving high school without a diploma. Living in impoverished communities with substandard educational facilities and opportunities, academically talented African American teen mothers must make choices about education and parenting. Pregnant teens must consider their future and decide whether to keep their baby, to complete high school or dropout, and if to attend a postsecondary institute. The problem is the low college attendance and graduation rate for parenting …

Dimensions Of Emotional Intelligence As Predictors Of Emotional Labor Strategies Among Ems Professionals, Joseph Mctaggart May 2024

Dimensions Of Emotional Intelligence As Predictors Of Emotional Labor Strategies Among Ems Professionals, Joseph Mctaggart

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Emergency medical service professionals face frequent demands of emotional labor, requiring them to regulate their emotions to best provide patient care in critical situations and handle emotional upset in the public they serve. Surface acting (faking emotions to meet work expectations) is associated with outcomes like burnout, increased turnover intent, and reduced job satisfaction. Emotional intelligence has been identified as a factor influencing emotional labor strategies; however, more research is needed. This research examined the extent to which dimensions of emotional intelligence (self-emotion appraisal, others’ emotion appraisal, use of emotion, and regulation of emotion) predict emotional labor strategies among emergency …

Impact Of Institutional Memory Loss On Novice Labor And Delivery Nurses’ Quality Of Care Delivery, Anthea Irene Thomas

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The social phenomenon institutional memory loss (IML) negatively impacts patient safety and quality of care. As experienced labor and delivery (L&D) nurses retire, incoming novice nurses lack expert knowledge and are challenged with a more complex patient population. Unresolved, the vulnerabilities from IML will impact the healthcare organization’s competitive edge and hamper progression of the sustainable development goals regarding maternal, infant, and child health. IML in the labor and delivery unit has not been covered in the current literature. In this phenomenological study the perspectives of labor and delivery nurse managers on the impact of IML on care delivery of …

Childcare Teachers’ Perspectives Of State-Required Training And Available Professional Development, Christina L. Kastl

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The problem affecting Oklahoma’s child care teachers is that the required state trainings and available professional development (PD) are not meeting their needs. The purpose of this qualitative study was to obtain child care teachers’ perspectives of the state’s required training and available PD. The theoretical foundation of this study was based on project-based learning (PBL) theory. The PBL theory supports active in-class learning that allows teachers to continually learn new concepts for their students and provides in-class training and coaching. Three research questions guided the study: What are early child care teachers’ perspectives of the Oklahoma-mandated training. What are …

Routine Care Visits, Quality Of Diet, And Type 2 Diabetes Risk Perception Among Older Adults, Abigail Chenoa Delich

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The rate of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) among older adults is expected to double within the next decade. Severe complications and health care costs for older adults with T2D are anticipated. In many cases, older adults have a low perceived risk for developing diabetes. Health behaviors such as routine care and improved quality of diet can be opportunities to address perceived risk for developing T2D in older adults. The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to investigate whether a relationship exists between routine care visits, quality of diet, and T2D risk perception in adults age 65 years and older …

African American Rural Pastors’ Perceptions Of Collaborations With Public Health Agencies, Richard Johnson May 2024

African American Rural Pastors’ Perceptions Of Collaborations With Public Health Agencies, Richard Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Recent research has suggested that when public health agencies (PHAs) partnered with African American (AA) pastors to deliver and promote health education to their church members, improved health behaviors in the AA community were realized. Recent studies have also shown that collaborations of this nature have yielded increases in health screenings and improvements in disease management, preventative care, and public health outreach. Because most of the previous studies focused on the perceptions of pastors who oversaw churches in urban areas, a need for research focusing on the perceptions of rural pastors was warranted. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research …

Case Manager Perceptions Of Trauma-Informed Practice And Policy In Human Service Organizations, Lachandra Brooks Prim

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

One of the goals of human service organizations is to provide help to victims of trauma, but they are often the cause of retraumatization to those individuals. The problem that was addressed in this study was the negative repercussions of retraumatization such as feelings of being unsafe, anger, guilt, shame, depression, and secondary trauma due to human service organizations not being based in trauma-informed approaches. The purpose of this generic qualitative research study was to describe and understand case managers’ perceptions of trauma-informed practices and policies across organizations and services. Ecological systems theory served as the theoretical framework for this …

Physician Burnout And The Marital Relationship: Spouse Perspective, Lisa Anne Muehlenbein May 2024

Physician Burnout And The Marital Relationship: Spouse Perspective, Lisa Anne Muehlenbein

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Physician burnout rates have consistently been higher than the general working population; however, recent literature suggested that after a steady decline in physician burnout rates, the COVID-19 global pandemic and additional organizational factors have caused physician burnout to reach an all-time high. Substantial research is available on physician burnout; however, little is known about how a physician’s burnout is experienced in the marital relationship through the spouse’s perspective. This basic qualitative study used purposive, convenience, and snowball sampling methods to recruit 10 female spouses of male physicians to participate in semi-structured interviews. The research question investigated the participants’ perceptions of …
