Background: Pleural effusions often cause disabling breathlessness, however the mechanism is unknown. Patients with pleural effusions are subjected to pleural fluid drainage on a ‘trial and error’ basis, as symptom relief varies. This population commonly complain of bendopnoea (breathlessness on bending forward) which has not been investigated. Our pilot data found bendopnoea was significantly associated with presence of pleural effusion. The PLEASE-3 study will evaluate bendopnoea as a screening test for effusion-related breathlessness, its predictive value of symptomatic benefits from fluid drainage and explore its underlying physiological mechanism. Methods: PLEASE-3 is a multi-centre prospective study. Eligible patients are assessed at …

Manufacturing companies constantly strive to produce products that promote better competitiveness. In addition, the current business environment requires manufacturing companies to adopt environmentally friendly concepts, which have become a global customer concern. Therefore, companies must inevitably meet environmental protection requirements through ecologically friendly processes and products. Meanwhile, environmentally friendly adoption requires a capital-intensive investment, which doubts the management regarding the investment return. Hence, top management commitment is highly needed to maintain eco-friendly products and contribute to the company's performance. This study examines the role of top management commitment to operational performance through adopting information technology, supply chain integration, and green …

Coastal species are challenged by multiple anthropogenic stressors. Plasticity may buffer the effects of environmental change, but investigation has largely been restricted to single-stressor performance. Multistressor studies have often been short-term and relatively less is known about the consequences of plasticity under one stressor for performance under another. Here, we aimed to test for the effects of thermal or hypoxic acclimation on thermal tolerance in the amphipod Gammarus chevreuxi. Animals were chronically exposed to raised temperature or hypoxia prior to determination of upper thermal limits and routine metabolic rate (RMR). Warm acclimation increased all metrics of thermal tolerance, but hypoxic …

Two-Buoy And Single-Buoy Floating Wave Energy Converters: A Numerical Comparison, Demin Li, Xiaochen Dong, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Sanjay Sharma, Tianyuan Wang, Heao Huang, Hongda Shi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
A numerical model of two-buoy and single-buoy floating wave energy converters (WECs) is developed based on a modified nonlinear version of WEC-Sim. The model is validated against experimental data from a 1:5 geometric scale model of a two-buoy floating WEC. Nonlinear behavior is primarily attributed to viscous damping and mechanical friction effects. It is found that a modified version of WEC-Sim obtained by correcting the phase of the wave excitation force in the source code provides an accurate representation of a two-buoy WEC operating in either linear or nonlinear mode. An equivalent single-buoy WEC is modeled by locking the two-buoys …

Experimental Investigation Of Mechanical Properties Of Ggbs-Fa-Sf Blended Geopolymer Concrete At Elevated Temperatures, Tan Wang, Min Yu, Hanjie Lin, Dawang Li, Long Yuan Li
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Geopolymer has excellent mechanical properties at elevated temperatures, but geopolymer concrete may not be so because of the large difference in thermal properties between geopolymer and aggregate which could lead to substantial thermal stresses when they are in a high temperature environment. In this paper we present an experimental investigation on the mechanical properties of GGBS-FA-SF blended geopolymer concrete with and without steel fibres at elevated temperatures. The influences of exposure temperature, coarse aggregate and steel fibre on the failure mode, compressive strength, elastic modulus, peak strain, and ductility of the geopolymer mortar and geopolymer concrete are examined. Based on …

Cybersecurity has become a major concern in the modern world due to our heavy reliance on cyber systems. Advanced automated systems utilize many sensors for intelligent decision-making, and any malicious activity of these sensors could potentially lead to a system-wide collapse. To ensure safety and security, it is essential to have a reliable system that can automatically detect and prevent any malicious activity, and modern detection systems are created based on machine learning (ML) models. Most often, the dataset generated from the sensor node for detecting malicious activity is highly imbalanced because the Malicious class is significantly fewer than the …

Ti and its alloys have been broadly adopted across various industries owing to their outstanding properties, such as high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent fatigue performance, exceptional corrosion resistance and so on. Additive manufacturing (AM) is a complement to, rather than a replacement for, traditional manufacturing processes. It enhances flexibility in fabricating complex components and resolves machining challenges, resulting in reduced lead times for custom designs. However, owing to distinctions among various AM technologies, Ti alloys fabricated by different AM methods usually present differences in microstructure and defects, which can significantly influence the mechanical performance of built parts. Therefore, having an in-depth …

Metabolomic epidemiology studies are complex and require a broad array of domain expertise. Although many metabolite-phenotype associations have been identified; to date, few findings have been translated to the clinic. Bridging this gap requires understanding of both the underlying biology of these associations and their potential clinical implications, necessitating an interdisciplinary team approach. To address this need in metabolomic epidemiology, a workshop was held at Metabolomics 2023 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada that highlighted the domain expertise needed to effectively conduct these studies -- biochemistry, clinical science, epidemiology, and assay development for biomarker validation -- and emphasized the role of …

Writing is a multifaceted skill, recruiting varied cognitive processes that involve working memory, attention shifting and inhibition, also known as executive functioning (EF). Despite emerging research examining associations between EF and handwritten composition, the mediating role of transcription skills on the relation between EF and text composition remains underexplored. Even less is understood about the nature of these potential mediation mechanisms in keyboard-based text composing, a writing modality that is becoming pervasive during the first years of schooling. This study investigated whether the automaticity of inscription skills (handwriting and keyboarding) and spelling mediate the relation between children's EF and text …

For the next generation of photovoltaic devices, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) appear as a good choice because they are simple and convert energy to electricity very efficiently. Recent years have seen a great deal of interest in organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties. Nonetheless, additional commercialization of the Pb element is still restricted by its inevitable toxicity. To address the instability and toxicity of the lead hybrid perovskite, it is imperative to produce entirely inorganic lead-free perovskite nanocrystals. Cs4CuSb2Cl12 offers promising qualities and strong stability against light, heat, and humidity to overcome these drawbacks. It possesses …

Purkinje cell dysfunction disrupts movement and causes disorders such as ataxia. Recent evidence suggests that Purkinje cell dysfunction may also alter sleep regulation. Here, we used an ataxic mouse model generated by silencing Purkinje cell neurotransmission (L7Cre;Vgatfx/fx) to better understand how cerebellar dysfunction impacts sleep physiology. We focused our analysis on sleep architecture and electrocorticography (ECoG) patterns based on their relevance to extracting physiological measurements during sleep. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder. Worldwide, its prevalence is ~2% and its etiology is mostly unknown. Identifying biological factors contributing to OCD will elucidate underlying mechanisms and might contribute to improved treatment outcomes. Genomic studies of OCD are beginning to reveal long-sought risk loci, but >95% of the cases currently in analysis are of homogenous European ancestry. If not addressed, this Eurocentric bias will result in OCD genomic findings being more accurate for individuals of European ancestry than other ancestries, thereby contributing to health disparities in potential future applications of genomics. In this study protocol paper, we …

E-Rate Program Expansion: A Pathway To Combating Cybersecurity Attacks In K-12 Schools, Madeline Strasser J.D. Candidate
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
Every day, a K-12 school in the United States falls victim to a harmful cyberattack that can cost it millions of dollars and keep its doors closed for days or weeks. Schools are desperate for funding to purchase essential cybersecurity services and products to protect their school’s networks from these cyberattacks. Such funding should be available through the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) E-Rate program, which was established as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 to provide discounts for connectivity services in K-12 schools across the country. During the COVID-19 pandemic, schools and other telecommunications industry stakeholders submitted petitions asking …

OBJECTIVE: Insights into how symptoms influence self-care can guide patient education and improve symptom control. This study examined symptom characteristics, causal attributions, and contextual factors influencing self-care of adults with arthritis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, or heart failure.
METHODS: Adults (n = 81) with a symptomatic chronic illness participated in a longitudinal observational study. Using Ecological Daily Assessment, participants described one symptom twice daily for two weeks, rating its frequency, severity, bothersomeness, duration, causes, and self-care.
RESULTS: The most frequent symptoms were fatigue and shortness of breath. Pain, fatigue, and joint stiffness were the most severe and bothersome. …

Dusty miller is a foliage known for its lace-like, velvety texture and silvery pale, sage-green leaves. While an annual foliage, dusty miller is an easy-to-grow, productive crop that can tolerate a light frost and make use of small spaces and edges on a cut flower farm. Harvests begin as early as June in high tunnels and late July in the field. Dusty miller serves as a traditional filler as well as base foliage for centerpieces. It is often used in small-scale floral design such as corsages, boutonnieres, and flower crowns. Though useful in diverse designs, dusty miller is also relatively …

We introduce new leader humility scales capturing a theoretically rich conceptualization of leader-expressed humility aligned with traditional and ethically-grounded philosophies. These scales draw from recent inductive research (Oc et al., 2015) identifying nine dimensions of leader-expressed humility: (1) having an accurate view of self, (2) recognizing follower strengths and achievements, (3) modeling teachability and being correctable, (4) leading by example, (5) showing modesty, (6) working together for the collective good, (7) empathy and approachability, (8) showing mutual respect and fairness, and (9) mentoring and coaching. The first three dimensions overlap with the most prominent conceptualization of leader-expressed humility in the …

Economists recommend combating climate change with carbon pricing; however, a major block to pricing emissions is concerns about economic costs. This paper examines the impacts of carbon pricing initiatives on the operating performance and market value of publicly listed firms around the world. Using the staggered enactment of carbon pricing initiatives across jurisdictions and a triple difference approach, we find a significant reduction in the profitability and value of carbon-intensive firms relative to low-emission firms after the enactment of carbon pricing policies. The reduction in firm profits is driven by both a decrease in sales growth and an increase in …

INTRODUCTION: Trials evaluating the role of intravascular imaging in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for complex coronary artery disease have yielded mixed results. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of intravascular imaging specifically intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) with those from conventional coronary angiography in complex PCI.
METHODS: Comprehensive electronic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases was performed until March 2023 for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing intravascular imaging with coronary angiography in patients undergoing complex PCI. Complex PCI was defined per each study, and included PCI for American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) type B2/C lesions, unprotected left main …
