Turn Your Expertise Into Income Through Goal, Russell Stein
Turn Your Expertise Into Income Through Goal, Russell Stein
Staff Professional Development Week
Russell Stein introduces staff to GOAL and the Learning and Training Center as a simple way to turn their knowledge into short, online learning modules. The main idea: staff already have valuable knowledge, and this workshop shows how to share it in a way that helps others and may also bring in income.
Participants will learn how GOAL supports lifelong learning and may offer ways to earn money in the future. The workshop will also introduce a flexible profit sharing model and explain how Instructor Design Services makes things easier. Staff do not need to build a full course. They …
Public Water System Compliance Assessment Framework: Evidence From Mississippi Infrastructure Vulnerability, Jason R. Barrett, Brian Blank, John Wallace
Public Water System Compliance Assessment Framework: Evidence From Mississippi Infrastructure Vulnerability, Jason R. Barrett, Brian Blank, John Wallace
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Regulatory non-compliance among public water systems poses a direct threat to public health, so we develop and apply a compliance assessment framework for state-level data from the Mississippi State Department of Health in order to aid public water systems in updating infrastructure to improve water quality. The framework evaluates public water system compliance across financial, managerial, and technical indicators, producing a composite score to support targeted interventions and data-driven resource allocation. Analyzing 1,107 systems, we identify a tiered structure of deficiencies, ranging from critically non-compliant rural utilities and mobile home parks to mid-range deficient municipal systems, and highlight the 15 …
An Introduction To Forest Management And Its Long-Term Linkages To Water Resources, John W. Groninger, Karl W. J. Williard
An Introduction To Forest Management And Its Long-Term Linkages To Water Resources, John W. Groninger, Karl W. J. Williard
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The management of forest-based land uses and water resources largely complement one another. Formal research where vegetation versus water-focused resources intersect has been limited primarily to assessing short-term impacts of intensive forest harvesting operations on water quality or watershed discharge. Outside of harvesting, foresters and watershed managers are generally aware that changes in forest structure or evolving management protocols that play out on multi-decadal scales also impact water resources. However, few studies have addressed these in ways that may influence proactive management decision making. Recent changes in water resources and forest management protocols, driven by forces as diverse as urbanization, …

Analyzing Safety Performance In Distracted Driving Behavior, Paulo Carreon, Nolan J. Metz
Analyzing Safety Performance In Distracted Driving Behavior, Paulo Carreon, Nolan J. Metz
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
With advances in technology throughout the course of time, distracted driving is at an all-time high in the United States. Even with high numbers, distraction is likely under reported because the behavior is difficult to detect during crash investigation, and police reports likely understate its incidents. Transportation safety is facing new challenges on the roadways. According to NHTSA’s newest analysis of 2021 fatal crash data, fatalities in distraction-affected crashes increased by 12% from 2020 to 2021, a total of 8.2% of all fatalities reported. Driving safely is always the priority and requires a wide range of skills. Drivers’ performances can …
China Airlines Flight 006, A Case Study Using The Hfacs Framework, Gavin Weinheimer, Brain Zhou
China Airlines Flight 006, A Case Study Using The Hfacs Framework, Gavin Weinheimer, Brain Zhou
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
The Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) is an accident analysis framework that helps accident investigators to systematically process information. The HFACS framework focuses on human errors both on the frontline IE pilots, flight attendants and maintenance personnel; and higher up in the organizational chain with management all the way up to the chief pilot and CEO. Using this framework the China Airlines flight 006 incident will be analyzed to better understand not just what happened but why the flight crew was unprepared for the engine failure and how to avoid possible future incidents of this nature. Findings of …

This project will investigate the relationship between genetic variants and susceptibility to Late Onset Alzheimer’s. By leveraging publicly available datasets that show statistically significant associations between genetic markers and disease occurrence, this project will contribute to a deeper understanding of how specific genetic factors contribute to a disease.
The Rhetoric Of Airline Safety After Major Incidents, Martyna Wojcik
The Rhetoric Of Airline Safety After Major Incidents, Martyna Wojcik
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Airline accidents are pivotal events that not only test the safety frameworks of the aviation industry but also challenge how airlines manage their public image. Rhetoric by airlines in the wake of major incidents plays a vital role in setting public perception about airline safety and corporate accountability. Airlines respond differently to accidents and use different strategies to manage public perception, influenced by whether the crash stemmed from human error or technical failure. This research investigates three study cases: the Germanwings Flight 9525, Lion Air Flight 610, and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashes for interpreting how airlines frame crisis discourse …
The Global Consequences Of Illegal Trafficking In East Africa, Kaitlynn Baker
The Global Consequences Of Illegal Trafficking In East Africa, Kaitlynn Baker
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Illegal wildlife trafficking poses significant threats to health, economies, and ecosystems worldwide. Currently, illegal wildlife trafficking holds a strong occurrence in the East African region. The region's biodiversity is increasingly endangered by poaching and illicit trade for elephant ivory, rhino horns, and other animals. This not only depletes wildlife populations but raises the risk of zoonotic diseases that can spread and hurt human health. This project aims to explore and further understand the horrific implications illegal wildlife trafficking, specifically in East Africa, can have on the United States’ national security by focusing on the areas of health, the economy, and …

A detailed literature review was conducted to establish the current state of the field, providing a foundation for forecasting its evolution over the next two to three years and beyond. Through this comprehensive review, the briefing provides a forward-looking perspective on the role of UAS remote sensing in shaping …
Advanced Manufacturing And Materials Of A Bio-Mimetic Hoof For Space Robotics Applications, Benjamin Heckel
Advanced Manufacturing And Materials Of A Bio-Mimetic Hoof For Space Robotics Applications, Benjamin Heckel
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Exploring planetary surfaces presents a major challenge for robotic systems, as traditional wheels and legs often struggle with uneven, unpredictable, and steep terrain. Nature offers a potential solution: mountain goats navigate rough landscapes with ease due to the unique structure and materials of their hooves. This project seeks to develop a robotic hoof that mimics these natural advantages, improving traction, durability, and adaptability for extraterrestrial exploration. To achieve this, the project will focus on selecting materials that closely replicate the composition of an organic hoof. The early prototypes will be printed in 3-D using cost-effective materials, while the final design …
