Adapting And Promoting Tourism For Children In Venice And The Lagoon Islands: A Comparative Analysis Of Food-Related Discourse Strategies In English And In Italian, Daniela Cesiri Prof. May 2026

Adapting And Promoting Tourism For Children In Venice And The Lagoon Islands: A Comparative Analysis Of Food-Related Discourse Strategies In English And In Italian, Daniela Cesiri Prof.

International Journal of Islands Research

According to the latest available version of the Annual Tourism Survey drafted by the City of Venice, in 2023, 12,628,079 tourists visited Venice and the Lagoon Islands (Bettiol & Marini, 2025). This survey does not provide data on the age groups of these visitors, but they are available in the previous version of the same Survey (Bianchetto & Marini, 2022), which reports that 29% of tourists were in the 46-71 age group. Therefore, we can presume that, excluding the older age groups, quite a large proportion of visitors is likely composed of young tourists and families with children. This study …

Book Review: Through The Brazilian Streets: The Migration Of East African Athletes To Brazil, Joao Paulo Melleiro Malagutti, Fernando Augusto Starepravo May 2026

Book Review: Through The Brazilian Streets: The Migration Of East African Athletes To Brazil, Joao Paulo Melleiro Malagutti, Fernando Augusto Starepravo

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

This review examines the book Through the Brazilian Streets: The Migration of East African Athletes to Brazil (Rojo, 2024), which analyzes the migratory processes of African road-running athletes competing in Brazilian races. Situated within the field of the Sociology of Sport, the book combines theoretical discussion on globalization and migration with empirical research based on interviews and documentary sources. The review highlights the analytical framework proposed by the author, which examines sports migration through cultural, political, economic, and personal dimensions. Particular attention is given to the study’s focus on migration flows between regions of the Global South, a perspective that …

How Licensing Compromised The Library, Aaron Perzanowski May 2026

How Licensing Compromised The Library, Aaron Perzanowski

Seattle University Law Review Online

Public libraries are besieged on multiple fronts: spiraling costs, budget cuts, book bans, patron privacy risks, inaccessible digital exclusives, embargoed titles, and unstable collections—not the mention a general decline in reading coupled with an upswing in reliance on artificial intelligence. No single development can explain all of the many challenges facing libraries today. But this Article argues that the shift from library-owned print collections to licensed digital ones is an overlooked throughline that has contributed to this constellation of challenges in underappreciated ways. For centuries, the first sale doctrine gave libraries broad autonomy over what they acquired, preserved, and lent. …

The Library Of Congress’S Essential Role In Digital Preservation: Reconceiving Mandatory Deposit After Valancourt, Dave Hansen May 2026

The Library Of Congress’S Essential Role In Digital Preservation: Reconceiving Mandatory Deposit After Valancourt, Dave Hansen

Seattle University Law Review Online

As the published record shifts to digital formats, the mechanisms that have ensured long-term preservation are breaking down. Most libraries acquire digital materials through licensing agreements that prohibit preservation copying, format migration, and interlibrary loan—contractually overriding the exceptions Congress enacted in the Copyright Act. The Library of Congress occupies a unique position: Through statutory deposit under 17 U.S.C. §§ 407 and 408, it collects copyrighted works pursuant to federal law rather than license agreements, and deposited copies become federal property under § 704, free from contractual restrictions. This Article examines how the Library’s deposit authority can be strengthened after the …

Separation Of Copyright Powers, Blake Reid May 2026

Separation Of Copyright Powers, Blake Reid

Seattle University Law Review Online

The United States Copyright Office’s multifarious roles in the U.S. copyright system have long prompted uncertainty about its position among the branches of the federal government. From its formal home in the Library of Congress, the chameleonic Office has accumulated a wide range of advisory, rulemaking, adjudicative, and administrative functions that have long prompted questions about both agencies’ exercise of dueling legislative and executive powers.

Despite its increasingly sprawling portfolio and unusual configuration, the Office has never faced a serious separation-of-powers reckoning—until now. In the span of just five days in May 2025, Donald Trump fired the Librarian of Congress …

The Library Of Congress At A Crossroads: Executive Overreach And The Future Of Public Knowledge, Leslie A. Street, Amanda Runyon May 2026

The Library Of Congress At A Crossroads: Executive Overreach And The Future Of Public Knowledge, Leslie A. Street, Amanda Runyon

Seattle University Law Review Online

In May 2025, President Trump's removal of the Librarian of Congress and attempted removal of the Register of Copyrights precipitated a constitutional crisis that exposed fundamental structural vulnerabilities in the nation's knowledge infrastructure. This Article argues that the Library of Congress faces a dual threat: a constitutional breach of separation of powers and a cultural threat to the preservation of America's intellectual heritage. The Library's structural ambiguity — its simultaneous identity as a legislative library, national library, and copyright agency — has left it vulnerable to executive overreach that threatens both constitutional integrity and its role as custodian of national …

Leveraging Technology, Copyright, And Libraries To Benefit The Public Interest, Michelle Wu May 2026

Leveraging Technology, Copyright, And Libraries To Benefit The Public Interest, Michelle Wu

Seattle University Law Review Online

Rapid developments in technology have radically changed the practice of copyright; however, this revolution has provided disproportionate, lopsided advantages to corporate interests over public ones. For example, publishers today can charge the same buyer for the same e-book many times over while simultaneously depriving them of the rights normally conveyed with purchase, such as the rights to resale, donation, lending, and bequeathing. Technology itself is a neutral tool, so there is no reason that the current landscape must be so unbalanced. This Article explores two ways in which libraries can both maximize the public benefits of knowledge and provide added …

Beyond The Library Of Congress: The Federal Library Ecosystem As Democratic Information Infrastructure, Nancy E. Weiss May 2026

Beyond The Library Of Congress: The Federal Library Ecosystem As Democratic Information Infrastructure, Nancy E. Weiss

Seattle University Law Review Online

This Article argues that the federal library ecosystem functions as democratic information infrastructure embedded within the institutional design of the United States government. Operationalized through national libraries, agency libraries, and federally supported library networks, this system organizes, preserves, and disseminates authoritative information, thereby supporting effective governance, public welfare, scientific progress, and democratic accountability.

The Article traces the development of this infrastructure from the establishment of the nation’s first federal library within the U.S. Department of State through the evolution of federal support for library services under the Library Services and Technology Act. Through two case studies—the United States implementation of …

Why The Library Of Congress Matters More Than Ever, Hope O'Keeffe May 2026

Why The Library Of Congress Matters More Than Ever, Hope O'Keeffe

Seattle University Law Review Online

In a symposium examining the broader importance of libraries, this Article makes the case for why the Library of Congress (LOC) is itself essential. Because the LOC’s broad range of programs is little known, this Article first summarizes the collections and components of the LOC and the ways it provides key resources to the American people and library communities. It then focuses on LOC programs that best illustrate the TILE Institute’s[1] technology, innovation, and ethics principles and concludes with a discussion of the importance of maintaining not just a national library, but a nonpartisan, politically independent Library of Congress. …

Why Libraries Matter Now More Than Ever To Democracy: Legal And Policy Issues Affecting The Future Of Public Knowledge, Margaret Chon May 2026

Why Libraries Matter Now More Than Ever To Democracy: Legal And Policy Issues Affecting The Future Of Public Knowledge, Margaret Chon

Seattle University Law Review Online

Libraries are key institutional stakeholders in our public knowledge resources and infrastructure, yet we often overlook, undervalue, and even misunderstand the multiple roles and fundamental importance of libraries in our democratic political system and constitutional legal system. Part of the goal of the symposium was to highlight the many key and irreplaceable ways in which libraries function, often behind the scenes, to ensure that the public has consistent access to high quality knowledge and therefore the ability to retain power against governmental and other forms of oppression.

Fortunately, two of the law school’s journals were willing to take on the …

Problem-Based Learning: A Necessity For Social Studies Education, Judson T. Kidd May 2026

Problem-Based Learning: A Necessity For Social Studies Education, Judson T. Kidd

Teaching Social Studies in the Peach State

Abstract:

This paper explores the design and implementation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) for middle and secondary classrooms, emphasizing its role in fostering critical thinking and postformal reasoning. A successful PBL framework consists of three interconnected stages: problem identification, evaluation, and solution development. Contextualization, the first stage, should be designed to engage learners and root them in the issue that is under study. The second stage focuses on the student being exposed to and evaluating multiple perspectives and actors. This step requires carefully designed guiding questions so that students have a model of interpretation that allows them to practice critical thinking …

Ghastly Growths And Bone Chilling Cases Pediatric Tumor Diagnosis Demystified, Alexander Aly Restum, Arif Musa

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background:

Pediatric skeletal tumors range from benign to malignant and require multimodal imaging for accurate diagnosis. Recognizing key features enables early detection, guides management, identifies underlying syndromes, and improves outcomes. This presentation provides an educational overview of pediatric tumor evaluation.

Methods:
We conducted a focused review of peer-reviewed literature and representative pediatric imaging studies to outline the radiologic characteristics of common benign and malignant bone tumors in children. Core imaging patterns, diagnostic challenges, and modality-specific advantages were synthesized to create a practical interpretive framework for radiologists.

Results:
The reviewed literature and imaging demonstrated consistent defining features across pediatric bone tumors. …

Medical Student Research Symposium

Background:

Public trust in vaccines has plummeted. Physicians serve as trusted voices in their communities, so they should be trained to communicate vaccine science effectively. Tailored communication training can help medical students develop adaptable skills for diverse clinical situations. Vaccine inaccessibility in conflict-affected regions differs from vaccine hesitancy in the Global North. This study examines the impact of medical communication education on medical students’ understanding of immunization challenges in conflict zones and their readiness to communicate confidently with patients domestically.

Methods:

A medical communication curriculum was modeled on the impact of missed vaccinations in underserved communities. The curriculum included one …

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Traditional and alternative medicine (TAM), including Ayurveda, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, and home remedies, remains widely used among Asian Indian (AI) immigrants in the United States alongside Western medicine. Cultural familiarity, family influence, and perceived safety shape these practices. This pilot study examined TAM prevalence, patterns, and perceptions among AI immigrants and …
