Injectable, In Situ Forming Peptide Nanofiber Reinforced Composite Hydrogels For Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Shambhavi Bagewadi Ms

Theses and Dissertations

Cell therapy for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is limited by the absence of a functional substrate such as Bruch’s membrane (BM), which is critical for retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell survival and integration. Although preformed substrates have been explored, their implantation can disrupt the fragile retinal architecture, compromise ocular immune privilege and increase infection risk. To address these limitations, an injectable hydrogel capable of forming in situ was developed. The hydrogel consists of thiol-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-SH) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Peptide nanofibers were incorporated to enhance structural reinforcement. Three self-assembling peptides - RADA-16, GAGA and GAGA-YIGSR were designed and …

Data-Driven Lpv Modeling Via Parametric Dmd And Predictive Control Of Highly Flexible Aircraft, Larry Catalasan, Tianyi He, Weihua Su May 2026

Data-Driven Lpv Modeling Via Parametric Dmd And Predictive Control Of Highly Flexible Aircraft, Larry Catalasan, Tianyi He, Weihua Su

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Student Publications and Presentations

This paper presents a method of data-driven parametric dynamic mode decomposition (p-DMD) to derive a linear parameter-varying reduced-order model (LPV-ROM) and predictive control for the nonlinear aeroelasticity of highly flexible aircraft. It directly uses the data snapshots obtained at varying flight conditions and encodes a nonlinear model’s polynomial dependency on flight conditions to produce a polynomial-dependent LPV-ROM. The modeling method can handle not only equilibrium flight conditions but also continuously varying flight conditions. In numerical studies, the proposed data-driven p-DMD modeling is applied to a highly flexible cantilever wing perturbed around equilibrium conditions and a flexible aircraft with time-varying angles …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Type IV sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCTs) are the rarest subtype of SCTs. We report a 2-week-old female who presented to a tertiary care centre in Muscat, Oman, in 2024 with abdominal distension and feeding intolerance. Imaging revealed a purely cystic presacral lesion, managed with successful laparoscopic-assisted cyst excision and coccygectomy. Histopathology confirmed a mature cystic SCT and the patient was diagnosed with a purely cystic Altman type IV SCT. The postoperative course was uneventful apart from minor wound dehiscence, which resolved with conservative management. Follow-up showed complete wound healing and no recurrence. Purely cystic Type IV SCTs are extremely rare and …

Electrical Grid Architectures For Smart Cities From Digitalized Power Systems To Ai-Enabled Urban Energy Ecosystems, Ehab Bayoumi May 2026

Electrical Grid Architectures For Smart Cities From Digitalized Power Systems To Ai-Enabled Urban Energy Ecosystems, Ehab Bayoumi

Mechanical Engineering

Smart cities increasingly depend on electrical grid infrastructures capable of operating under high levels of digitalization, decentralization, and intelligence while maintaining reliability, security, and governance at the city scale. However, conventional power systems, historically designed for centralized generation and passive operation, are poorly aligned with the operational complexity, multi-actor coordination, and cross-sector integration characteristic of urban energy systems. This review develops an architecture-first perspective on smart-city electrical grids, tracing their evolution from digitalized power networks to decentralized and AI-enabled urban energy ecosystems. Rather than focusing on individual technologies, the study evaluates grid architectures using a multi-layer framework that integrates physical …

The Lion's Share: The Secret Land Grab Of Drake's Circumnavigation, Melissa Cole Darby

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Francis Drake’s journey around the world between 1577 and 1580 is renowned as one of the most famous voyages in history. The circumnavigation was a great achievement for England, but the official story Queen Elizabeth and her Privy Council maintained for nine years was that Drake was a pirate, and that the treasure he captured on the voyage would be returned to Spain. Upon his return, information about the voyage and his route were suppressed and the crew was sworn to secrecy: they were not to reveal where they travelled on ‘pain of death’. Here I present the case that …

Heroism As Emotional Integration: A Process Model Of Emotion-Driven Heroic Action, Scott T. Allison May 2026

Heroism As Emotional Integration: A Process Model Of Emotion-Driven Heroic Action, Scott T. Allison

Heroism Science

Heroism is often framed as the expression of prosocial motivation fueled by positive emotions such as empathy, compassion, and moral elevation. This perspective, however, overlooks the complex emotional dynamics that characterize high‑risk, morally consequential action. This article advances a process model of heroism as emotional integration, involving the dynamic coordination of multiple and often competing emotions—including fear, anger, compassion, and moral concern—under conditions of uncertainty and threat. Drawing on research in heroism studies, positive psychology, and affective science, the model distinguishes heroism from ordinary helping by emphasizing emotional conflict, regulatory processes, and identity‑based commitment. It further differentiates rapid, intuitive …

Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey Inklings: Tolkien And Lewis’S Relative Dimensions In Space-Time, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

As noted in Tolkien's letters, around 1936 he and C.S. Lewis agreed to each try their hand at writing "an excursionary 'Thriller'" – essentially science fiction – "each discovering myth." They supposedly “tossed up,” with Lewis drawing a "Space-journey" and Tolkien a "Time-journey" (Letters 39). The standard answer is that this bet resulted in a trio of published space-travel novels for Lewis (Out of the Silent Planet [1938], Perelandra [1943], and That Hideous Strength [1945]) and two incomplete and abandoned time-travel projects for Tolkien, The Lost Road (incomplete typescript dating to 1937 [LR 8]) and The Notion …

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

Decades of research on Roman-period hiding complexes in the Galilee have identified 85 such complexes to date. Like the hiding complexes found in Judea, they were used as places of refuge during periods of distress under Roman rule in the country. Extensive archaeological excavations conducted in the hiding complex at Khirbat Khuwweikha, near Kafr Kanna and northwest of Nazareth, have yielded impressive finds, including pottery, glassware, metal items, coins, an ostracon and bones. Such a large quantity of diagnostic finds is rare in Galilean hiding complexes, and the assemblage attests to the use of the complex by Jews during three …
