The Effect Of Incidental Emotions On Self-Control: An Examination Using A Need-Based Choice Model, Shruti Koley
The Effect Of Incidental Emotions On Self-Control: An Examination Using A Need-Based Choice Model, Shruti Koley
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework that examines the effects of incidental emotions on choices in self-control dilemmas. The framework predicts that the effect of emotions depends on the hedonic and non-hedonic needs they activate and the extent to which emotional consumers expect the virtuous and gratifying options in the choice dilemma to facilitate these needs (i.e. their instrumentality toward the activated needs). The framework helps develop propositions for the self-control effects of six commonly experienced emotions: happiness, sadness, pride, guilt, anger and anxiety. Design/methodology/approach – The author uses a choice model to develop …
Place-Based Education: A Rural Solution For Student Achievement, James A. Chamness
Place-Based Education: A Rural Solution For Student Achievement, James A. Chamness
College of Education
Rural secondary students in the United States continue to demonstrate lower academic outcomes on standardized assessments compared to their non-rural peers, highlighting the need for contextually responsive instructional approaches. This concurrent mixed methods study examined the relationship between place-based education (PBE) and academic achievement among rural secondary students and explored rural teachers’ perceptions of PBE. Guided by social cognitive theory, the study investigated differences in ACT composite scores between students exposed to PBE and those receiving traditional instruction, as well as perceived challenges and opportunities associated with PBE implementation. Quantitative data included archived ACT scores, which were analyzed using descriptive …

Bridging The Justice Gap: A Comparative Study Of Legal Aid Marketing In Canada, Australia, And The United States, Farah O. Haq
Student Theses and Dissertations
Access to justice remains a central challenge across legal systems, particularly for immigrants and refugees, Indigenous communities, and survivors of domestic violence. While legal aid organizations play a critical role in bridging this gap, their effectiveness increasingly depends on how clearly and compassionately they communicate legal information online to their target audience. This thesis conducts a comparative content analysis of nine nonprofit legal aid organizations in the United States, Canada, and Australia, three countries united by a common law tradition but divided by the communication barriers their communities face, examining 180 social media posts and nine websites through the lens …

Background/Objectives: Statins are currently one of the most commonly used cholesterol-lowering drugs. In recent years, in addition to their well-known effects on the cardiovascular system, statins have been shown to exert beneficial effects in the progression of various neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. Methods: In this study, the effects of lovastatin on the function of α7-nicotinic acetylcholine (nACh) receptors expressed in rat hippocampus and Xenopus oocytes were investigated. Results: In whole-cell patch clamp studies in hippocampal neurons, 21-day chronic (20 mg/kg), but not acute (20 min), lovastatin treatment caused significant potentiation of choline (a selective agonist for α7 nACh receptors)-induced currents …

Economists have scarcely investigated and analyzed the racial discrimination topic despite the prevalent presence of economic racism and inequality in the United States. For example, the article “Race and Racism in Economics” by Cihak, Mlachila, and Sahay (2020) present some shuttering findings. Out of 7,920 articles from the top 10 economic journals published during a decade from 2010-2020, only 0.2 percent cover issues of race, racial inequality, and racism. There is a scarcity of articles analyzing this topic that affects large communities. However, students need to be exposed to this reality and some unintended consequences of regulations that might aim …

The Nusantara new capital city has been a national strategic program based on Indonesian's sustainable forest city concept. In the future, there will be a migration of 1.9 million people from different islands, indigenous, and religions, carrying their own cultures. It will suppress the existence of local cultures. Local culture lives in harmony with nature, but massive development will impact the presence of forests and their culture. This research aims to document various local cultures related to ethnobiology (plants and wildlife) of the indigenous in the Nusantara region and its surroundings (Dayak, Paser, and Kutai). The research was conducted through …

The Agentic Web is emerging as billions of AI agents discover, communicate, and coordinate across the open Web, shifting from isolated models to Web-Inetgrated entities. This workshop explores the state of the art, open challenges, and emerging research directions in the foundations and architectures of the Agentic Web. It provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to examine interoperable architectures, protocols, and standards enabling AI agents to operate as first-class Web entities. Beyond technical interoperability, it also adresses economic and societal mechanisms including reputation, governance, accountability, and large-scale coordination.
The Disconnect Of Moral Accountability: Freedom, Equality, And The Limits Of Punishment, Celine Shiah Choi
The Disconnect Of Moral Accountability: Freedom, Equality, And The Limits Of Punishment, Celine Shiah Choi
Philosophy Senior Theses
This thesis examines the justificatory foundations of moral accountability as a social practice and the profound disconnect between our ordinary intuitions about justice, the moral attitudes we hold toward one another, and the governing institutional practices of punishment. Drawing on Stephen Darwall's second-person standpoint and P.F. Strawson's account of reactive attitudes, the paper argues that legitimate accountability presupposes two necessary conditions, freedom and equality, understood as the shared capacity of rational agents to recognize moral demands and stand in reciprocal normative relation with one another. Both conditions, however, prove deeply fragile in practice: legal institutions invoke the language of rational …

Learning, Teaching, & Researching Optimization
The structural barriers that isolate faculty from one another—individualistic reward systems, professional identity protection, disciplinary silos, fragmented time—have been documented in detail elsewhere. This paper begins where that analysis ends. Its sole focus is solutions: what actually works, what you can do without waiting for your institution to change, and most importantly, what you can do today. It is organized in three movements: evidence-based institutional strategies, community-level structures any group of faculty can build, and a granular map of the smallest possible individual first steps—the ones that cost almost nothing and have an outsized probability of changing how you experience …

Movement, Residency, And Behavioral Plasticity Of Reef Manta Rays In The Samarai Islands Of Papua New Guinea, Anna Knochel, Joanna Harris, Shannon Murphy, Annie Murray, Guy M.W. Stevens, Mark Erdmann
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The reef manta ray (Mobula alfredi) is a highly mobile pelagic marine ray found throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, but investigation into their behavior and ecology within Papua New Guinea has not been previously undertaken. Furthermore, the home range, dispersal characteristics, and inter-seasonal fine-scale habitat use of this species is limited. To address these data gaps and investigate the vertical and horizontal habitat use of a previously unstudied population, SPLASH10-F-321A pop-off archival satellite tags were used to track ten adult individuals from 4–181 days between 2016–2018 across two distinct monsoonal periods in the Samarai Islands of …

INTRODUCTION: The comparative effectiveness of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists (GLP-1s) versus dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors (DPP-4s) in hemodialysis is unknown.
METHODS: Using 2011 to 2021 US Renal Data System and Medicare claims data, we emulated a target trial comparing new users of GLP-1s versus DPP-4s with patients who survived ≥ 90 days on in-center hemodialysis before medication initiation. We used inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) and Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs).
RESULTS: We identified 3671 GLP-1 and 12,039 DPP-4 users. After IPTW, mean age was 63 years, 52% male, 63% White, and mean body mass …

Social, Economic, And Environmental Sustainability Of Small-Scale Hydroponic Farms, Alexa Genevieve Kaminski
Theses
Controlled environmental agriculture (CEA) is well-positioned to contribute to a more sustainable food system. It has the potential to offset some of the negative impacts of conventional agriculture through its ability to optimize the crop growing environment, locate production closer to population centers, and take advantage of non-arable land. The focus of this dissertation is one type of CEA: the hydroponic container farm (HCF). The HCF grows crops using only water and fertilizer inside a 40-foot shipping container that can be located anywhere in the world. Manufacturers are optimistic about this farm’s abilities, but little research exists that investigates the …

Diet is increasingly recognized as a potential upstream modulator of the gut-brain axis (GBA) through its effects on the microbiome, microbial metabolites, and host immune and endocrine responses. The GBA is a complex, bidirectional network connecting the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system, with diet influencing microbial community structure and metabolic output. Plant-based diets, such as Mediterranean and MIND, have been associated with increased production of anti-inflammatory microbial metabolites and improved barrier function, while high calorie/low nutrient diets are often linked to increased immune activation and barrier dysfunction. However, while microbial metabolites, especially short-chain fatty acids, indoles, bile acids, and …

Since the 1970s, forest conversion in the name of development has encroached upon the living spaces of the Orang Rimba, a forest-dwelling indigenous group in Jambi Province, Indonesia. Some of the forest areas, which serve as the cultural and livelihood foundation for this hunter-gatherer community, have been transformed into transmigrant settlements and oil palm plantations, while the remaining forests were designated as a National Park in 2000. Although they still have access to the national park, many Orang Rimba have built their livelihoods among the oil palm trees—not as owners or workers, but believing that these lands are their ancestral …

Although Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) is now common practice across various surgical specialties, the adoption of its principles has only recently gained momentum in liver and kidney transplantation. The publication of relevant ERAS guidelines in these specialties has undoubtedly facilitated the assimilation of evidence in support of ERAS components, the paucity of which had been viewed as a barrier to the implementation of ERAS in transplantation. In conjunction, institutionally-developed ERAS pathways have provided pragmatic examples of how these principles can be adopted within transplant practice. In this article, we summarise the current recommendations and underlying evidence for key components …

Maryland Reproductive Freedom And The Full Personhood Of Pregnant People, Margaret E. Johnson
All Faculty Scholarship
Pregnant and birthing people are inappropriately criminalized. Such criminalization is for behavior during their pregnancy that would not otherwise be criminalized, including when there was no harm to the later born baby, and for birth outcomes like miscarriages and still births. Law supports criminalization in part because of the historic legal significance given to fetal “viability” as a demarcation between full personhood rights for pregnant people and the encroachment of fetal “personhood” on those rights. Focusing on Maryland’s new constitutional amendment for reproductive freedom, this essay examines how the new amendment offers promise in restoring the full personhood rights for …

Hypothyroidism affects a large subset of the population, with many undiagnosed. In iodine-sufficient regions, chronic autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s) is the leading cause. Chronic, untreated hypothyroidism can result in multisystem complications, including cardiovascular disease, infertility, and respiratory failure. The most severe presentation, myxedema, is a medical emergency marked by altered mentation, ranging from lethargy to coma, hypothermia, and hypoventilation. Prompt recognition and treatment with thyroid hormone replacement are essential to improve outcomes. We present a case of hypercapnic respiratory failure secondary to myxedema coma. A 51-year-old female with morbid obesity (BMI 39.9 kg/m²) presented unresponsive, hypoxemic, and cyanotic, requiring emergent intubation. …

Climate change poses an increasing threat to human wellbeing, but despite this intricate relationship, addressing climate change rarely mainstreams wellbeing objectives. This study explores opportunities to integrate climate change into Bhutan’s development philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH) and examines how this experience can inform a wellbeing-centred global application through Climate Resilient Development (CRD). Using a qualitative design combining semi-structured interviews with 41 policy influencers in Bhutan, document analysis, and literature synthesis, this study identifies two complementary points of integration. The first involves identifying and then embedding climate-wellbeing stressors into the 9 domains and 33 GNH indicators used in the …
