The Future Of Epilepsy Care In The United Kingdom: A Roadmap For Technology-Enabled Transformation, Rohit Shankar, John Terry
The Future Of Epilepsy Care In The United Kingdom: A Roadmap For Technology-Enabled Transformation, Rohit Shankar, John Terry
Peninsula Medical School
Epilepsy is recognized to be a significant cause of premature mortality, socio-economic distress and poor quality of life in economically developed countries. Despite clear clinical guidelines, epilepsy care is marked by delayed diagnosis, fragmented management, high emergency admission rates, and pronounced health inequalities affecting rural populations, ethnic minority groups, and people with intellectual disabilities. Diagnostic pathways remain inefficient, with prolonged waits for electroencephalography (EEG), low sensitivity of routine investigations, and repeated inconclusive testing. Long-term management continues to depend on infrequent hospital visits and unreliable patient recall, contributing to suboptimal seizure control, avoidable morbidity, and preventable mortality. In the United Kingdom, …

Robotic Assessment Of Human Motor Control: Contextual Learning, Aging, And The Balancing Of Unstable Systems, Laura Alvarez Hidalgo
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses
This thesis investigates human sensorimotor control using three complementary sets of experiments. These examine contextual motor learning, aging-related motor performance, and human balance.First, a series of experiments examined how different sensory modalities influence motor memory formation during dynamic learning. Using a robotic manipulandum to implement an interference task, we assessed how the contextual effect of visual and passive lead-in movements decays over time, specifically as a function of dwell time between the movement cue and the required action onset. Results revealed a modality-dependent pattern of decay: while both cue types enabled dual adaptation to opposing force fields, passive cues preserved …

This paper investigates the effects of vibration on signal reflection (S11) in aerospace data transmission line (ADTL) and commercial data transmission line (DTL) connectors for their alternative use as vibration sensors. The impact of vibration on the S11 signal was investigated on five ADTL and four DTL connectors at six vibration frequencies (20 Hz, 40 Hz, 80 Hz, 160 Hz, 320 Hz, and 640 Hz) and four vibration accelerations (0.5G, 1 G, 2 G, and 4G). The experiment was conducted using a split-plot design with a cable type assigned as the main-plot factor, with vibration frequency and acceleration as subplot …

Multiplexed Fabry-Pérot High-Temperature Sensing Based On Dispersive Microwave-Photonic Frequency-Time Domain Analysis, Ruimin Jie, Chen Zhu, Bohong Zhang, Koustav Dey, Jie Huang
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a multiplexed high-temperature Fabry-Pérot (FP) fiber sensing system interrogated by dispersive microwave-photonic frequency-time domain analysis (DM-FTDA). In the proposed architecture, incoherent broadband probing light is modulated by radio-frequency (RF) signals and then reflected by a parallel network of hollow-core photonic crystal fiber FP (HCPCF-FP) sensors. A chirped fiber Bragg grating provides strong dispersion to map the composite FP spectral response into a well-defined microwave transfer function. Unlike conventional optical Fourier-domain multiplexing that requires deliberate cavity-length allocation, the proposed approach achieves multiplexing via delay-dominated discrimination. Distinct delay fibers are assigned to each sensor branch, and an …

Large Multi-modal Models (LMMs) have significantly advanced a variety of vision-language tasks. The scalability and availability of high-quality training data play a pivotal role in the success of LMMs. In the realm of food, while comprehensive food datasets such as Recipe1M offer an abundance of ingredient and recipe information, they often fall short of providing ample data for nutritional analysis. The Recipe1M+ dataset, despite offering a subset for nutritional evaluation, is limited in the scale and accuracy of nutrition information. To bridge this gap, we introduce Uni-Food, a unified food dataset that comprises over 100,000 images with various food labels, …

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have exhibited remarkable advancements in integrating different modalities, excelling in complex understanding and generation tasks. Despite their success, MLLMs remain vulnerable to conversational adversarial inputs. In this paper, we systematically study gaslighting negation attacks—a phenomenon where models, despite initially providing correct answers, are persuaded by user-provided negations to reverse their outputs, often fabricating justifications. We conduct extensive evaluations of state-of-the-art MLLMs across diverse benchmarks and observe substantial performance drops when negation is introduced. Notably, we introduce the first benchmark GaslightingBench, specifically designed to evaluate the vulnerability of MLLMs to negation arguments. GaslightingBench consists of multiple-choice …

Not Too Early, Not All At Once: Design Tensions In Ai-Mediated Self-Disclosure In Online Dating, Pei-Hua Tsai, Tianyi Zhang, Emran Bin Elias Poh, Anthony Tang, Yung-Ju Chang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Online dating relies on self-disclosure, yet initial conversations are fragile: users must navigate uncertainty around timing, boundaries, and reciprocity with little shared context. While advances in AI raise the possibility of mediating disclosure, how such support might reshape the experience of early-stage relational disclosure remains underexplored. We conducted 29 semi-structured interviews to examine how daters envision AI-mediated self-disclosure in online dating. Our findings surface recurring design tensions rather than simple opportunities or risks. Participants welcomed guidance that could pace disclosure, support reflection, and reduce social awkwardness, but stressed preserving agency and authorship. They valued interpretive assistance for sense-making of ambiguous …

Zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) is a powerful infrastructure for proving the correctness of a program execution with a succinct proof, attracting significant interest from researchers, developers, and users. It has been widely used in applications such as blockchain rollups, privacy-preserving machine learning, and off-chain computation. As the field grows, a wide range of zkVMs have been proposed. However, they adopt different choices in instruction formats, trace layouts, and proving backends, which results in a highly heterogeneous design landscape and makes it difficult to understand the relations among these systems. To bridge this gap, we provide a comprehensive study of zkVMs that …

Enhancing Pointing Gestures Of Non-Hmd Users In Asymmetric Collocated Mixed Reality Collaboration, Nam-Dang Vo, Van-Vinh Thai, Anthony Tang, Khanh-Duy Le
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A common collocated group setting in mixed-reality (MR) collaboration is a person wearing a MR headset (HMD user) and presenting MR contents to audiences who are not provided with such specialized devices (Non-HMD users). In this setting, while Non-HMD users can view the MR environment shown on a large physical display, it still remains challenging for the HMD user to interpret their pointing gesture when they spatially refer to objects in the MR environment. To address this, we designed and evaluated two pointing techniques—SCREEN and SCREEN+SPACE—that support Non-HMD users in referring to MR content. Screen pointing allows users to refer …

The proliferation of Machine Learning (ML) models and their open source implementations has transformed AI research and applications. Platforms like Hugging Face (HF) enable this evolving ecosystem, yet a large-scale longitudinal study of how these models change is lacking. This study addresses this gap by analyzing over 680,000 commits from 100,000 models and 2,251 releases from 202 of these models on HF using repository mining and longitudinal methods. We apply an extended ML change taxonomy to classify commits and use Bayesian networks to model temporal patterns in commit and release activities. Our findings show that commit activities align with established …
Analytical And Numerical Methods For Solving Fractional Integro-Differential Equations Using The Modified Operational Matrix Method, Nour Alzoubi
Theses
Fractional calculus has attracted considerable attention in recent years because of its wide applicability to model a variety of linear and nonlinear physical phenomena across different scientific disciplines. In particular, fractional diferential equation systems have proven to be effective in describing processes with memory and hereditary properties. However, the solvability and analysis of such systems strongly depend on the type of fractional operator employed, especially in the presence of nonlocal fractional derivatives with singular kernels, which remain an open and challenging area of research.
The main objective of this thesis is to develop efficient analytical and numerical techniques for solving …

Abstract The global climate change has brought with it a growing stack of conceptual proposals – from green economy to bioeconomy – each presenting itself as a non-extractive economic alternative. Unfortunately, these conceptual claims continue to reproduce colonial logic that subordinates local knowledge. The loss of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is not merely an ecological setback: it is a systematic epistemological violence – a product of climate colonialism operating within the architecture of global green programs. This article traces the discourse of green economy, analyzes the loss of TEK as an epistemological problem, and proposes a socio-bioeconomy reorientation as a …
Advanced Mathematical Modeling And Data-Driven Techniques For The Diagnosis Of Diabetes Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring (Cgm) Data, Farah Morsi
Theses
Diabetes mellitus is a major and growing health challenge, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) provides high-resolution time-series data that capture detailed glucose fluctuations over time. However, conventional CGM summary measures, such as mean glucose, standard deviation, and time-in-range, may not fully describe the nonlinear temporal structure of glucose dynamics.
This thesis investigates nonlinear dynamical approaches for analyzing CGM time series, with a focus on recurrence-based analysis and ordinal-network analysis. Recurrence-based methods, including recurrence quantification analysis (RQA), are used to characterize geometric and temporal patterns in reconstructed phase space, while ordinal networks …
On The Fractional Laplacian Type Operator, Maysam Abdulnaser Zain
On The Fractional Laplacian Type Operator, Maysam Abdulnaser Zain
Theses
In this thesis, we study analytical structures arising from Dunkl theory and their
applications to harmonic analysis and fractional Laplacian operators. Dunkl operators are differential–difference operators associated with finite reflection groups, providing a natural generalization of the classical Fourier analysis through the introduction of root systems and multiplicity functions. Within this framework, several classical transforms appear as special cases of the (k,a)-generalized Fourier transform. We study the generalized Fourier transform ₖ,ₐ, its kernel Bk,a (x,y), and the associated translation operator and convolution structures. Using these tools, we construct the corresponding heat …

Theses
Extending postharvest quality and maintaining the nutritional value of cucumber fruit requires specific storage conditions to postpone senescence and enhance marketability. The postharvest lighting environment is a main factor that influences quality preservation for harvested biomass. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of different light emitting diodes (LED) spectra (green, red, blue, and white LED) alone or in combination with 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on postharvest quality and bioactive compounds of cucumber fruit during cold storage for 16 days at 5°C, the control fruit were left in the dark. For combined treatment, the fruits were exposed to 1-MCP …

A Hybrid Approach To Phishing Email Detection: Leveraging Machine Learning And Large Language Models, Hessa Shamal Biri
Theses
Phishing attacks have reached a new level of sophistication through the deployment of large language models by attackers. The current AI-generated threats defeat existing detection systems which base their operation on past data. The thesis presents a hybrid system for phishing email detection which combines real email data with synthetic LLM-created samples to enhance traditional machine learning classifiers performance. The study created a hybrid dataset of 20,627 emails by combining 18,631 real messages from the Kaggle Email Classification Dataset with 1,996 synthetic emails. The synthetic emails were generated using four large language models LLaMA-3, Falcon, LLaVA, and Mistral to capture …

Aviation Accident Investigation Analysis Methodologies Used By 12 Government Safety Investigation Authorities, Kym Bills, Leesa Costello, Marcus Cattani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Introduction: Leading government Safety Investigation Authorities (SIAs) that investigate major aviation accidents are members of the International Transportation Safety Association (ITSA). Investigation analysis methodology details are rarely included on SIA websites, in final accident reports, shared with peers, or specified by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Some ‘New View’ safety researchers assume SIAs don't use systemic methodologies and that accident investigation has little value. Because of the sensitivity of SIA work and need to prioritize safety value from available investigation funding, there has been little academic research on choice and use of investigation analysis methodologies to address these issues …

Recent evidence has suggested an association between high sodium intake and development of cognitive impairment. However, while animal studies demonstrate consistent relationships between sodium intake and cognitive impairment, this relationship remains less clear in humans. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between self-reported baseline sodium intake and cognitive decline over 72 months. Cognitively unimpaired participants (n = 1208) from the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle study were included (70.87 years of age; 41 % male). Participants completed a food frequency questionnaire to quantify sodium intake and underwent comprehensive neuropsychological assessment at baseline and four additional timepoints, 18 months apart. …

Background & aims: The incidence of steatotic liver disease (SLD) among younger adults is increasing globally. While poor diet is a recognised risk factor, the impact of specific dietary components is unclear. We investigated associations between dietary patterns and SLD markers in younger adults. Methods: Analysis involved 887 members of the Raine Study Generation 2 cohort, assessed at age 27. SLD was defined using a validated MRI volumetric liver fat fraction equation. Dietary intake, assessed by food frequency questionnaires, was summarised using a modified Overall Diet Score (ODS) that classified foods as “healthy” or “unhealthy.” Associations between diet and SLD …

Blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), including mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses, play a critical role in climate mitigation due to their high carbon sequestration capacity. Despite Africa's extensive and diverse coastal ecosystems, continent-wide assessments of blue carbon stocks and accumulation rates remain scarce. Here, we synthesized blue carbon data from 87 publications (January 1993 - March 2026) to evaluate the current state of knowledge and regional variability. Our analysis reveals marked regional heterogeneity in sediment organic carbon (SOC) stocks across Africa, reflecting both ecological variability and methodological differences among studies. Normalised to a sediment depth of 1 m, median SOC stocks …

Understanding Adolescents’ Attitudes Toward Disabilitiesto Improve Out-Of-School Programs, Vanessa Spero, David C. Diehl, John M. Diaz, Serap Gorucu
Journal of Youth Development
This study explores adolescents’ attitudes and perceptions toward individuals with disabilities in out-of-school time (OST) settings. Gaining insight into these attitudes can help inform future initiatives and interventions to develop programs that foster inclusion and greater participation of people with disabilities in OST programs. It documents progress in culturally responsive programming and national diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) initiatives while highlighting persistent disparities in participation and benefit distribution. The review identifies effective strategies, enduring structural barriers, and areas where research and practice remain limited, offering a comprehensive foundation for understanding 4-H’s …
